The SpaceA four-bedroom house with gorgeous views of the surrounding hills and lush, vibrant forested area awaits you. If you are looking for a destination off the beaten track, you will find a unique retreat from nearby urban Mbale. Backpackers usually find the Bududa district a special place with its intimate connection to the residents of Southeastern Uganda, the Bugishu people. Enjoy a glass of wine on our veranda while watching the sun descend, and take in a truly local experience. If you are looking for adventure, you can climb the ascent in nearby Mount Elgon National Park, ride a boda-boda in the moonlight with a local driver, and even volunteer in nearby NGOs if you would like to meet the local residents more closely. Delicious coffee is made at the foot of these mountains. You can also create your own blend and roast your own beans, if you would like to experience the local fare of Bududa – sugar cane and fresh, dark roasted coffee. Please ask if you are interested and we will assist in booking for you. Breakfast is served each morning as your choice of crepes with lemon/bananas and sugar or a garden omelette. If you would like to explore the area, there are a multitude of hiking trails, as well as nearby attractions as close as the Wanele Falls (45 minutes drive) or the Sipi Falls park (2 hours drive). We can arrange tours for hiking with a local guide for the amateur explorer or a more steep ascent for the experienced hiker. This guesthouse is hosted by the Bududa Learning Centre, part of a non-governmental organisation funded for three divisions: Women’s entrepreneurship & microfinance, vocational skills academy, and social work programme for children. If staying at our wonderful home you will be helping fund our community outreach and growth in the Bududa district. You can discover more by reading about current projects on the Global Giving site for BUDUDA CANADA FOUNDATION (BCF). BCF is responsible for combatting the fight against poverty through our work in education and entrepreneurship after more than 10 years of experience in Uganda. Transport: The YY coach or a local mutate, Ugandan taxi bus, can take you from any major urban centre to Mbale (Mbale is 4 ½ hours from Kampala). Then, you can take an additional 45-minute drive on a Bududa mutate which will take you to the Bududa trading centre, also known as the maduka. Alternatively, we can arrange a private-hire to pick you up in Mbale, driving you directly to our home if you prefer more comfortable transportation.** Once the mutate has dropped you off in the maduka, we will meet you and bring you directly to the home, which is five minutes away with a local boda driver. If you choose to book our private-hire car, our friendly local driver Rashid will bring you directly to the guesthouse without any hassles. Please e-mail Kimberly for more information! Amenities: We are environmentally conscious in Bududa and our home operates much like a small eco lodge, completely powered by solar lighting except for our gas-powered stove and outdoor oven. Our water is provided by local Mountain spring sources, and is also treated for clarity and cleanliness. We live very humbly in Bududa, so you will be provided with a small shower and given warm water to bathe. Our conditions require that you are comfortable with “bucket showering” – Ask us if you don’t know what this is ! We offer bottled water for drinking while you are staying with us. Wifi is not provided but you can go to the local internet café for access to the network. Dinner is also served by our Guesthouse Manager, who makes a variety of local dishes (many of which are vegetarian). If you would like to eat dinner with us each evening, you will be provided with several options like Ugandan homemade chili, Aubergine and potato curry, Basil coconut curry with beef/potatoes, and Indian daal with chapatii. **The charge for a private hire is 60,000 Ush (Ugandan shillings) Guest AccessThis is a 4-bedroom house, and there are 2 bedrooms available. Usually you will only be sharing the home with one additional person during your time with us who lives in the area and has a lot of local knowledge. You will have access to the entire home. Interaction with GuestsI will be happy to assist with booking your travel and transport, as well as your options for hiking and adventuring! The NeighborhoodBududa is essentially in the middle of Mt. Elgon National park and therefore, has unique landscape and wildlife preserved in the area. You will see a lot of rare birds and species of monkeys, including the National bird, the Crested Crane. We are also lucky enough to have so little artificial light that the night sky view is a truly spectacular sight. Getting AroundLocal ways of getting around: The best way around for moving from place to place is through hiring a local boda driver by hailing one on the road. 1,000 Ush will usually bring you 5-minutes drive down the road. Local trails and the Mt. Elgon park are only 6,000 Ush usually. Transport: The YY coach or a local mutate, Ugandan taxi bus, can take you from any major urban centre to Mbale (Mbale is 4 ½ hours from Kampala).
