Geology buffs and nature lovers will want to visit the Valles Caldera, about an hour away. The casita is about 35 minutes from Los Alamos National Lab, and could serve as a home-away-from home for visitors to the Lab. There is a beautiful view of the Jemez mountains from the back of the casita, which is located on a private, gated, unpaved road. There are a few other homes on our road but the casita is situated in a way that provides privacy--particularly from the back patio/view area. The SpaceThe Chama RIver runs through the 7.5 acre property of Casa de Los Palacios. Home to wild ducks, great blue herons, swallows and wintering bald eagles, the river and towering cliff (named Los Palacios) provide a wild and natural corridor. The 3,300 square foot house was build by the owners in the 1980s and is a blend of northern New Mexico architecture and passive solar design. Guest AccessThe house consists of three bedrooms and two and a half baths - perfect for two couples or a small family - and sleeps 5. There are 2 queen beds and 1 single bed. Upstairs bathroom has a tub; downstairs bathroom has a shower; and the downstairs bedroom has a sink. A bright sunny kitchen is the heart of the house with a large table that seats 6-8. The living room, the most dramatic room in the house, faces the tall cliff and the cottonwoods next to the river. South-facing portals allow for outdoor lounging on all sunny winter days, while the north-side of the house has a large screened summer porch with a table for eating, a hammock and comfortable easy chairs. There is a 3-car carport. Interaction with GuestsHosts are eager to help guests settle into the house and the area. They are just a phone call away. The SpaceAll of the house is available (about 1500 sq. ft) to our guests except the two locked areas upstairs, which are the owner's private spaces. Casa Paloma has a fine, open kitchen for those of you who like to cook at home, saving $ on eating out each day. We offer a 5-burner gas stone w/ center grill for eggs & pancakes, a full-size stainless 'fridge & "Some of the Best water in Abiquiu" (according to Good Water reports, in Santa Fe) plus Cuisinart cookware, plenty of pots & pans & dishes & a roomy table for six to eight in the dining room allow for fine dining every day. Get your groceries at Smiths, in Los Alamos, or take a trip to Santa Fe for stocking up at Trader Joes or Whole Foods, or the many other selections there. Use our two coolers for your perishables. Bodes is close-by for those items that might not have made your list - & for the local Monastery's Monk's Ale! Downstairs (where a couple might live on a single level the entire stay) offers a dining area that opens to a large & airy living room with open views to the Jemez Mtns. & Pedernal. There is a cozy fireplace centrally located & a laundry room next to the kitchen, w/ washer & dryer. We even offer a clothesline, to those who prefer fresh-air 'green' drying. We use this all the time, preferring fresh clothes to the dryer. We also supply laundry detergent & baking soda, which makes for fine & natural fabric softening. The downstairs bedroom is roomy, with views to the Sierra Negras & Pedernal. It has a double closet, six drawers beneath the bed & a small but roomy three-drawer dresser. LED reading lights above the bed give one plenty of light for those who enjoy reading over local brochures or journaling about the day's adventures. The mattress is a comfortable queen Serta Perfect Sleeper. A spacious, airy adjacent bathroom has a tub & shower, also with views of the Sierra Negras & Pedernal - it's like showering in nature! A roomy sink w/ hand-painted Mexican tiles adds much charm to this lovely bath. The upstairs bedroom is complete with spacious area for exercise (a yoga mat & a few hand weights are in the closet), a writing nook with desk & dreamy views, a cute bath with Jacuzzi tub (no shower), Mexican tiles & plenty of storage. This bedroom has a private outdoor balcony with stunningly beautiful views of Sierra Negra, Pedernal, and "Laura's Mesa" (the red cliffs directly to the NW). And the night sky is spectacular! Sip a glass of wine on the gated balcony, listening to an owl in the Cottonwood trees in the El Rito Bosque below or coyotes off in the distance... Enjoy a meal on the roomy front portal, or sit undercover here & watch a distant & amazing thunderstorm over the Jemez Mountains, with triangular ruins of an ancient caldera, directly in front of Casa Paloma. The new bluff flagstone 'viewing patio', off the portal, is yet another spacious outdoor site for viewing sunrise with your favorite fresh ground coffee or for sunset over Pedernal. Come out later & view the brilliant, uninterrupted constellations. The fall of 2015 Pete & I built a tiered wall around the patio & have added 'rabbit fencing' beyond that. We also built a picnic table for the back patio, for shaded dining right off the kitchen for our guests this summer. We plan to add an arbor, covered with vines, to dine European Style, but this is a future project. DOGS: Well-behaved/trained dogs are welcome for $10/night or $50/week, per pet. (Limit two dogs.) Again, this is a beautiful area to take your friends on long walks with you & enjoy the sites. To help you keep your pets downstairs, there is a gate that can be closed at the bottom of the stairway. Outside, there is also a fenced dog kennel for your use (approx. 7' x 12') - but keep in mind that summers are quite warm and pets exposure to the heat should be limited. A larger 6' "dog run" was added this spring & next year a couple of custom-built, insulated doghouses (as soon as we are able to build them...). **Please know that coyotes do roam in this area & we strongly suggest that you keep your smaller dogs leashed when outside and on walks with you. We watch our Pomeranian at all times. Wiley is never allowed to roam alone. Please be mindful of this, although we've never seen the coyotes up close to the house, we do hear them calling in the neighborhood... ***Also, for those of you traveling with kayaks or canoes, we have an enclosed shed where you can hide & protect them, when not in use. Guest AccessThe home is located off Rt. 554, on the road up to El Rito & Ojo Caliente. Casa Paloma is just over a mile away from the main road, on HOA maintained dirt roads that a Prius & a PT Cruiser regularly travel. Our driveway is large & circular, so you can bring in a truck with a boat trailer or an RV with no problem. While Pete & I have been here this fall & winter, we have worked on the Fort Defina Road, in the HOA, ourselves, to ensure it is more 'comfortable' for comings & goings... Of course, one good monsoon rain could undo all our hard work, but, until then, it's great! Interaction with GuestsAlthough we do not live in the area in spring and summer, we do have a housekeeper who takes great pride in her work & will assist you in any way she is able, including a dry-run on building a small fire in our wood stove insert, in the living room. We also have a caretaker, who lives just beyond Casa Paloma. So if you have any problem at all, one or the other will be available. Phone numbers/contact info are given upon check-in. We are also 'hands on' owners, enjoying coming to know guests who will be staying in our home & we will be happy to answer questions & assist you from afar. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any of your questions about Casa Paloma or the area, in general. The NeighborhoodWe have a beautiful, quiet & private home about 8 miles from Abiquiu Village proper, centrally located to all the going-ons in northern New Mexico. What I truly love is going for long walks right out our door, up through the Prado Valley area where we live or down into the arroyo, off the El Rito bosque below us. Birds & wildlife abound. We never know what we'll see when we take off. These are fine areas to walk your dog... Views are spectacular, so keep your camera (or art supplies) close at hand! Bring groceries in, but - if you want to eat out - local area restaurants are the Abiquiu Inn (for finer dining), or Bodes for a terrific green chili cheeseburger, in a very relaxed manner. El Farolito is a hole-in-the-wall in El Rito (8 miles north of us) that offers authentic northern New Mexican fare at a reasonable price. And, of course, there is Mamasita's Pizza, 5 miles down the road, for any such cravings. If you want to travel to Espanola (about a half hour drive), there are many restaurants from which to choose. Our favorites are El Paragua for a fine & authentic New Mexican dining experience. It's where Pete & I go to celebrate anything. We also like JoAnn's, a quaint small place with sweet people & good food at a great price. Espanola is a fun place to find your own favorites... And then there is always a visit to El Santuario de Chimayo', with it's famous 'healing dirt' (tierra bendita), of which so many people come to pilgrimage. I would strongly suggest a drive to this beautiful small & ancient church, then have a meal at the neighboring Rancho de Chimayo', with terrific food. It's a beautiful location, offering outdoor patios, as well. It has been family run for decades. Another one of our favorites... And then, of course, there is Santa Fe, full of fine food, music & festivities, an hour SE of Casa Paloma. Getting AroundYou will need your own car, here in Abiquiu, as this area is remote. You might consider all-wheel drive in these areas, as so many places you might want to go will have rugged roads to get there. Other Things to NoteCasa Paloma is located in Prado Valley Ranch, a spacious development with many scenic miles of walking trails withing the area. (Great for walking your dogs without having to get in the car.) Be sure to take your camera when walking out here, especially in the early morn or at dusk. There is also an arroyo, just down the road, that offers a large & wonderful 'exploration area'. (Just watch for distant thunderstorms to the north with flash floods. Yes, this does happens in the Southwest...) Casa Paloma is a wonderful place for a couple or couple of couples, to 'get away from it all'... or a small family who are looking for a peaceful & private getaway in the Abiquiu area. It's close to so many of the reasons you'll want to come to northern New Mexico, yet, when you return to the Casa it is so peaceful & close to nature, right there beside El Rito Creek, as it is, that you really won't want to leave the serene beauty of place. If you or your children are into nature, it's a wonderful place to explore the immediate area. Wild critters, like bunnies & a variety of birds, abound. We even have a resident Bull snake (El Toro) who keeps SW rattlesnakes & mice at bay. - PLEASE DON'T HARM TORO, IF YOU MIGHT SEE HIM! He won't harm you. Just say hello & let him go his way...

The SpaceSitting high atop a beautiful mesa our modern 160 square foot studio is near Abiquiu, New Mexico, where Georgia O'Keeffe lived and painted for most of her adult life. We invite you to experience the magnificent landscapes of Northern New Mexico illustrated in Ms. O'Keeffe's many beautiful paintings of the area, as well as immersing yourself in a little known fact about her…she also traveled to Hawaii in January 1939 after being commissioned by the Dole (as in "pineapple") Company to visit the then Territory of Hawaii to create two paintings to be used in its advertising campaign. For nine weeks she traveled across Oahu, Kauai, the Big Island of Hawaii and Maui. Her time there is illustrated by no fewer than twenty paintings completed that year, two of which -- Pineapple Bud and Crab's Claw Ginger, Hawaii -- were used the following year in the Dole Advertising Campaign, as well as painting the luscious tropical flora and fauna, waterfalls and volcanic scenery of Hawaii. Our modern studio provides living and sleeping accommodations for one to two guests with a full bathroom with shower, convertible sofa and single sized air mattress, bedding, towels, refrigerator, microwave, dinnerware and flatware, paper products, television with internet access, private driveway/entrance, and a furnished patio to enjoy viewing our stunning sunsets while grilling your favorite meal. Our modern studio provides you all the comforts of home in a safe, secure, tranquil area, just south of Abiquiu. Your getaway sits on 16+ acres of land kissing the sky with 360 degree views of the surrounding 'Valley of Shining Stone' area consisting of Abiquiu, Abiquiu Lake, Medanales, Shadow Mountain, Black Mesa, the Chama River, Truchas Peaks, Plaza Blanca, and of course, Pedernal, about which Georgia commented…”God said if I painted it often enough, I could have it.” There are literally dozens of outdoor activities including lake or river fishing, hiking, biking, boating, etc. Native American ruins are within walking distance. Wildlife can be seen from just about anywhere with views from every angle. Close by are the old Abiquiu pueblo, the non-excavated ruins of Poshuouinge, plus San Juan, Santa Clara and San Ildelfonso Pueblos. Of course Santa Fe is less than 60 minutes away, Nambe Falls less than 45 minutes, Ghost Ranch less than 30 minutes. This is a four-season vacation area and there is an abundance of activities each and every season....walking among spring wildflowers with cerulean blue skies, dry and breezy summers are unsurpassed for comfort, fall is colorful with the yellow and orange cottonwood trees along the Rio Chama and Rio Grande and of course the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and Taos Mountain Balloon Rally, the Abiquiu Studio Tour (Columbus Day weekend) in October, or one week later, the El Rito Studio Tour. Winters are for skiing....downhill at Santa Fe, Parajito, Taos, or Angel Fire....cross country here on the Mesa, Red River's Enchanted Forest, or at Valle Caldera, Parajito, or Santa Fe....limitess opportunities!!! Located on the Chama River, Abiquiu enjoys the contributions of over two thousand years made by the Native tribes and Pueblo Indians, with Spanish influence via Mexico starting four centuries ago. Guests may enjoy a variety of special sites and activities on the four-acre ranch: picnicking at the bosque - the forest at the bank of the beautiful Chama River; meditating in the apple grove; browsing the flower and vegetable gardens in the shade of giant cottonwoods; enjoying the acequia, an aqueduct that irrigates Llama Deara and the neighboring farms and ranches, with its quaint bridges; and so on. "Casa Paloma" is centrally located in Abiquiu (w/ good roads in! - a Prius can get to our house). Pete & I have just spent the fall & winter & into early spring in our new New Mexican home, thoroughly enjoying our time there. We stayed with an eye to updates & making it a comfortable stay for our summer/early fall guests. We've added additional seating to the lovely portal & viewing patio, as well as a glass table for outdoor dining on the portal. Pete has even built a solid picnic table for the back patio, outside the kitchen, for breakfast dining, or shady meals in the afternoon or evening. He also built a fine, new 'convertible' bench/table for the upper balcony, for meals there or creative endeavors. We have many artists who enjoy the breathtaking views that Paloma offers (myself included) & we have made it possible to work from several locations. We have also added new 'SmartSheers' in both bedrooms, to block the hot afternoon SW sun. Our kitchen is roomy & we love to cook many a gourmet meal there - so bring your groceries in & enjoy! (We supply spices & herbs, condiments, usually coffee & a small selection of teas. We also offer dish & laundry detergents, a washer/dryer - & even a clothesline, which I use regularly...) We left Casa Paloma in mid-April, kicking & screaming as we have loved our stay there in NM so much - but we leave a beautiful, comfy home for you to use as headquarters for your own northern NM adventuring... We ask that you be respectful of our home & hope that you also thoroughly enjoy the beauty & majesty of place that it offers, there above the El Rito creek bosque. (We listened to it happily gurgling below us during our entire stay. Oh, & did I mention the incredible quiet nights & those unstoppable stars?... If you're looking for a private, natural getaway, Casa Paloma is IT...) We are in the middle of many historic & recreational sites: Carson Nat'l Forrest is 4 miles north on 554; El Rito village is 8 miles north; the old Abiquiu village is about 7 miles away, along w/ the Abiquiu PO & Rising Moon Gallery - where many local artists display their talent. Bode's General Store, where locals & visitors gather for food & cheer, groceries & gifts, is across the road. Just up Hwy. 84 is Abiquiu Lake - w/ summer recreational activities & beautiful views. Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O'Keeffe painted, is just beyond about 25 minutes from Casa Paloma). Ghost Ranch now offers many workshops, plus hiking & horseback riding... Close by is Christ in the Desert Monastery, where one can drive 14 scenic & bumpy miles to secluded peace & check out what the Monks are doing (when not making the fine ale they sell at Bode's...). Echo Amphitheater is nearby & a bit further up the road is Chama & Tierra Amarilla, two charming northern New Mexico communities. These are on the doorstep of Pagosa Springs - in Colorado. Durango - a lively little western town - is just 3 1/2 - 4 hours from Casa Paloma. The ancient Anasazi ruins of Mesa Verde are just west of Durango - and the Four Corners of UT/AZ/CO & NM are just beyond that - so all this adventure is just one days drive away! Los Alamos glows directly south of us, with a fine library, a swimming pool, a large & modern Smith's grocery store - and all the scientific history of atoms & bombs one could imagine. Jemez (hot) Springs; Bandelier Nat'l Monument; the ancient & verdant volcanic caldera of Valle Grande & Puye Indian Ruins are all right in this area. Any one of these (or a combination) make for a fine day's exploratory of culture & natural beauty within a 45 minute drive. Any of these offer wonderful hiking opportunities. Golf?... Well, there are two terrific desert courses! Black Mesa Golf, just south of Espanola, is a half an hour away & offers very nice greens. Buffalo Thunder Casino, about 15 minutes further south, towards Santa Fe, has a terrific (Hilton Resort caliber 27-hole) course, with food, drink & gambling waiting in the wings. Hiking is everywhere you turn, out in these huge, vast-skied lands, starting with walking out the driveway & down the arroyo, just below us on Fort Defina Drive. We've hiked through the 'neighborhood' and have thoroughly enjoyed the climb & the trails that meander right here at home (a terrific area to walk your dogs). Photos & views abound. Plaza Blanca - famous in Abiquiu for its geology & beauty - is about 5 miles away, down off of County Road 155. If you're a hiker, you cannot miss a stay here without a least one mind-boggling trek in to these awe-inspiring white cathedral rocks. (An interesting tidbit is that the closing scene of "Cowboys & Aliens" was filmed in Plaza Blanca.) And, of course, no visit to Abiquiu - O'Keeffe country - is complete until one has explored Santa Fe, only an hour's drive southeast. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum awaits you, in the historic Plaza, as well as an untold amount of galleries, boutiques, fine shopping, fine dining, an abundance of grocery stores & antique shops... the list is endless. The Rail Runner train can take you on down to Albuquerque, even, to explore Olde Town!... So MUCH to do; so little time... If you want to explore the ancient church with the famous 'healing dirt' the 200-year-old El Santuario de Chimayo' sits outside the old village of Chimayo'. This is one of my personal favorites in the area, with a blend of Catholic history & mysticism that moves my spirit to tears. This is known as the "Lourdes of the Southwest"; thousands pilgrimage here annually for the "tierra bendita" at Easter and at Christmas. Be sure to allow time to explore el santuario & its adjacent chapels & gift shop. Afterwards, I suggest you take in a meal at the Rancho de Chimayo' Restaurante, a local favorite, full of old Mexican atmosphere, great food, & both indoor & lush outdoor dining. A trip to Taos is an hour, or so, further north, either along the "River Road" (paralleling the Rio Grande) or explore the "High Road", through tiny & creative ancient villages. One of them is Truchas (where "The Milagro Beanfield War" was filmed in the 1970s. Robert Redford directed this timeless movie. It became the village of Milagro - where miracles still do occur.) Other villages along the High Road are Cordova, Ojo Sarco, Las Trampas & Penasco - all creative centers - winding into Rancho de Taos. Here you will find one of the most photographed churches in America: Santuario San Francisco de Asis. Taos, itself, offers up its own Plaza & culture, as well as the historic Taos Pueblo, where Tewa Indians still make drums. The Abiquiu area is a magnet to history, creativity, culture & natural beauty. Please enjoy your outings, then return to our portal or patio & relax into a quiet night of brilliant stars in a vast open sky. Casa Paloma awaits.

Part of a lovely organic farm along the Chama River in Medanales, neighboring Abiquiu. The casita sleeps two comfortably in the bedroom with queen size bed and can accomodate an additional child or adult in the loft. The cozy casita has a small living/kitchen area, a full bathroom with Mexican tile, and a separate bedroom. The loft is accessed through the bedroom. There is a covered portal with a wood stove and comfortable furniture on the front of the casita overlooking the vineyard and fields. The casita is screened from the main house and is oriented toward the gardens, fields and vineyard. The flagstone patio with private hot tub borders the acequia, the traditional irrigation canal for the farm, and looks out over farmland and down to the cottonwood trees bordering the river. A small bridge leads across the acequia into the vineyard and old orchard. Guests are invited to enjoy seasonal produce. You can also walk the 1/2 mile down the lane along the farm fields and through the meadow land down to the Chama and enjoy the peacefulness of the river from the shaded campsite at the riverbank with screened gazebo, picnic table and chairs and firepit. Nearby the farm, hiking and riding trails lead to BLM and National Forest lands offering a variety of landscapes to enjoy -- vast open mesas, arroyos to explore, pine forests, mountain vistas. Also nearby are the ruins of little-known old Indian settlements. Ojo Caliente with its fabled hot springs and spa facilities is a short drive from the farm. Medanales is a small village with a Hispanic population and tradition just south of Abiquiu of Georgia O’Keeffe fame. The landscape varies from pastures to badlands, with the magic Cerro Pedernal and Sierra Negra on the horizon. Both can be climbed by the more experienced hiker. Ghost Ranch and the wide and splendidly colored Piedra Lumbre basin are nearby, as is Plaza Blanca with its white sandstone formations. Espanola, the main town in this predominantly Hispanic area, is 15 minutes away. Quite a few interesting restaurants that serve local cuisine (with red or green chili!) can be found here. "I wish you could see what I see out the window— the earth pink and yellow cliffs to the north —the full pale moon about to go down in an early morning lavender sky behind a very long beautiful tree covered mesa to the west - pink and purple hills in front and the scrubby fine dull green cedars - and a feeling of much space - It is a very beautiful world - I wish you could see it." — Georgia O'Keeffe Sitting high atop a beautiful mesa our modern 160 square foot studio is near Abiquiu, New Mexico, where Georgia O'Keeffe lived and painted for most of her adult life. Our modern studio provides an insight into Georgia's Hawaii works with living and sleeping accommodations for one to two guests with a full bathroom with shower, convertible sofa and single sized air mattress, bedding, towels, refrigerator, microwave, dinnerware and flatware, paper products, television with internet access, private driveway/entrance, and a furnished patio to enjoy viewing our stunning sunsets while grilling your favorite meal. You can dine inside or on the outdoor patio and take in the fresh air and limitless views while sipping wine or a cocktail. Close by are the old Abiquiu pueblo, Ghost Ranch, the non-excavated ruins of Poshuouinge, plus San Juan, Santa Clara and San Ildelfonso Pueblos. Bandalier National Monument, the Puye Cliff Dwellings, and Nambe Falls are less than an hour away, and Santa Fe is about an hour away. This is a four-season vacation area and there is an abundance of activities each and every day. Become one with spring wildflowers amid cerulean blue skies. Relish the dry and breezy summers which are unsurpassed for comfort. Fall is brisk and colorful with the yellow and orange cottonwood trees along the Rio Chama and Rio Grande and of course the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and Taos Mountain Balloon Rally, the Abiquiu Studio Tour (Columbus Day weekend) in October, or one week later, the El Rito Studio Tour. Winters are for skiing at Santa Fe Ski Basin, Parajito Mountain, Taos Ski Valley or Angel Fire, or you could cross-country here on the Mesa, or at Red River's Enchanted Forest, or at Valle Caldera, Parajito Mountain, or the dedicated runs in Santa Fe!

La Lomita is located in the area where La Familia Valdez has a 300 year history. La Lomita was conceived, designed and built with hospitality and spirituality in mind. It is a place of healing and rest, of relaxing and dreaming, of renewal. It holds mystery in the howling coyotes, the whispering junipers, the shifting arroyos, and the colorful wildlife. Bienvenidos! Nuestra casa es su casa. Read our wonderful reviews and let our many guests describe the La Lomita experience. (See review section) Nestled into the Black Mesa, La Lomita is the hub surrounded by Abiquiu to the northwest, Ojo Caliente and Taos to the north, Chimayo to the east, and Española and Santa Fe to the south, all with local art and food just 10 to 55 minutes away. It is 12 miles from the relaxing mineral springs and spa at Ojo Caliente, and 30 minutes from Los Alamos and Bandalier National Monument. The spectacular Santa Fe Opera is 30 minutes away, as is its neighbor, the Santa Fe Flea Market with treasures made by 'artesanos' from Mexico, Guatemala and other native areas (open in Spring and Summer). On the way to Taos, via the High Road through Truchas or the route along the Rio Grande through Velarde with the Black Mesa Winery, you will find beautiful scenery and native Hispano-made tin work, retablos, santos, and weaving from traditions begun hundreds of years ago. River rafting in the Rio Grande or floating over the river gorge in a hot air balloon, are adventures waiting for all ages, as are the ski trails and golf courses, all in close proximity to La Lomita. Stay at home and climb the Black Mesa, part of our 9 acre 'back yard', and if you reach the top (about 45 minutes of spectacular climbing), wander across the top of the Mesa and see the Rio Grande flowing below. Or grab your easel and paints, camera or writing pad, and capture the breath-taking, mountain scenes all around you. Need to relax? Try tai-ch, yoga or gentle walking around our juniper, piñon and desert-flowered landscape, and let the many visiting songbirds lull you into a peaceful siesta. Keywords: On 9 acres, solar adobe home with covered portal (porch) facing the Jemez mountains, designed with quiet and the spiritual in mind.
