We have 4G and full bars. However, depending on your network, we can't guarantee that you will be in a service area. Be mindful of this and check with your network provider if you have any questions. The water has been occasionally running orange with iron and clay sediment this summer. The water was tested when the well was drilled, and it is safe for showers. While the water is, to the best of our knowledge, safe for drinking and cooking, we have provided plentiful bottled water for drinking and cooking and we recommend using it. You may also let the water run for a few minutes to allow it to clear.

Looking for a nice quiet vacation in Michigan's Upper Peninsula? Well, come on up, we got just the place for you. This is an older two story house that sits about 300 feet back from Lake Independence (you can not see the lake) with a good driveway for you to walk down to get to the lake. The house is completely furnished and contains everything you'll need for your stay, you'll just need to bring your own food & toothbrush. As you walk into the house you are in a large screened in porch with a sofa, a couple of chairs and a table. Most folks like to sit here and read or do jigsaw puzzles, yup, folks still do those on quiet evening up here. Step into the living room and you'll see a sofa bed (queen sized) two recliner chairs and a TV and VCR/DVD, TV is limited to 2 or 3 channels (depends on the weather). From the living room you go back into the kitchen - dining area. Kitchen has a full sized electric stove and refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and other misc. electric kitchen appliances. All the pots and pans and dishes are there that you'll need for a comfortable stay. Dining area sits 6 comfortably. Toward the back of the house is a large room that is mainly empty except for a washer and dryer and a few storage shelves, off this room is the downstairs bathroom which contains a shower. Adding to the rustic experience, you'll notice that the hardwood floors have a slight slope to them. This is due to the outside foundations having settled a few inches over the years. The sleeping arrangements are what we like to call 'friendly'. Upstairs is one big room with a king size bed, queen size bed, and a set of trundle beds. Upstairs there is also a complete bathroom with a big old deep tub in it On the grounds, you have a gas bar-b-q grill, a fire pit with a good supply of wood, and about a half dozen bikes of various sizes for your use. As mentioned it is only a short walk to the lake where we have a dock available if you want to tie your boat up there (we do not supply a boat). The lake out front is great for swimming with a hard sand bottom and nice warm shallow water going out about 50 yards, perfect for small children. The lake is a good fishing spot. It contains walleyes, northern pike, smallmouth bass, jumbo perch and a few crappie. Smallmouth bass in the 20' size are common, northern pike up to about 35 pounds have been take from our lake and we even caught a Michigan Master Angler pike a few years ago (25 pounds). Nearby there are nice hikes to wilderness waterfalls, stream fishing for native Brook Trout, a good boat ramp to Lake Superior and it's fishing, tours of the Big Bay Point Lighthouse, some great wild blueberry picking at the right times of the year, and viewing of Michigan's great wildlife. Within a mile of the the cabin our guests have seen deer, bear, moose, fox, wolves, eagles and osprey as well as lots of little woods creatures. You can often watch the deer in the yard from your screened in porch in the evening. The cabin rents for $100.00 per day (minimum two days rental required) or $500.00 per week from Memorial Day through Labor Day, $400.00 per week before or after those dates for up to 6 people. There is an extra charge of $15.00 per night or $50.00 per week for each additional guest. No more than eight guests are allowed. A $100.00 deposit is required to hold your reservation. Cabin is available for rental from May thru November. Deposit is fully refundable up to 30 days before date of reservation, non-refundable after that. Welcome to the Big Lake! The satellite map does not show our location correctly, so we have disabled it until VRBO can address the issue. Sorry. Squaw Beach Retreat is private, but not rem!ote--the way we describe our place. Imagine a cozy, but roomy-enough log cabin built of 10 inch native wood logs and hardwood floors on a huge and pristine Lake Superior bay with s sandy beach. As you look straight north from the deck towards Canada across the world's biggest fresh water lake, the bay 'arms' rise to over 60 feet of forested cliffs on either side. Big Bay (the bay, not the village) is designated as a safe harbor of refuge because a working 1897 lighthouse perches atop one of these arms on the eastern point, and a welcoming harbor with a small marina is tucked in on the western side of the bay, a short stroll from here. We are dog friendly, and our dog Bucky absolutely loves splashing through the shallow water at lake's edge! More about the cabin itself: we have a loft area upstairs with two twin beds and a futon/couch looking down to the great room. The master bedroom with the log 4-poster King is directly off the great room downstairs. There is a full kitchen with a pass-through bar, a separate dining room/lounge area, a full bathroom with new shower stall, a small office/all purpose room, and an enclosed entry hall. The great room looks through sliding glass doors to the deck overlooking the water. You can watch the entire bay from inside due to the expanse of long windows on 3 sides. Scattered family vacation getaways and permanent homes are nestled along the beach shaded by a variety of Northern evergreens. Across the private lane leading to the cabin is a wooded area which backs up to a protected wetlands that stretches for more than a mile-- home to eagles, huge woodpeckers, as well as an abundance of wild ducks, Canadian geese and native wildlife. There are even moose sightings in the area from time to time, and their numbers are growing, according to a recent survey and some lucky residents around 'this neck of the woods.' The charming little village of Big Bay is on a slope about a mile and a half from here, offering most things needed in the way of restaurants (3), grocery/general store, gas, outdoor outfitting supplies, laundromat, and two historic churches. All of that, and not a single stop light! The uniqueness of Big Bay that made us want to have a place here is that it maintains the charm of a village at the end of a road--when you look at a map, you see the road stops here where the Huron Mountains take over! Not a drive-through community, so there are no franchises, just 'Mom and Pop -type of businesses that are friendly and helpful. If this is the ambiance you are looking for, you will be happy here. The history of Big Bay is so very interesting and varied, ranging from Henry Ford's enterprises here to the exclusive Huron Mountain Club (over a century old) to movie-making to the rich tradition of the early lumberjacks of the U.P. Big Bay is also very proud of the one-of-kind and very special Big Bay Health Camp. While you may just want to get away from city life and partake of the abundance of outdoor activities or simply unwind on the deck gazing at the ever-changing moods of Lake Superior, the city of Marquette (population around 19,000) is only 25 miles through the woods to the south and offers any service or amenity that you might want or need. Marquette is considered the 'hub' of the Upper Peninsula, home to Northern Michigan University, a regional medical complex, as well as sightseeing, museums, shopping, historical sights, golfing, restaurants, and way more. Since you will need to pass by or through Marquette to reach Big Bay, we recommend that you make a stop at the Tourist Center in Marquette or the Visitors' Welcome Center in Harvey to arm yourselves with brochures on this entire area, so you won't need to waste a moment of your time here wondering what to do next in Michigan's awesome Upper Peninsula. The only problem you might encounter? So much to do--so little time! In our 18 years here, we are still exploring and discovering.
