The SpaceClover Nook is set next to a ravine complete with a creek that can become a torrent in the spring. It is a two-family house with a door between the kitchens. This bedroom is small and most suitable for kids, the budget conscious, and small people--the beds are short. It does not have air conditioning--YET--but it does have two window fans. Please don't book this room in the summer if AC is a must for you. The room on the driveway, which we share with the house next door, so it can be noisy during the daytime and on summer nights. The room shares a bathroom with the larger bedroom down the hall. It's suitable for a maximum of two people. I usually cannot accommodate last-minute bookings. Guest AccessGuests are welcome to use the kitchen for making beverages or to store food that must be refrigerated. The house has wireless Internet, but we do not have TV. When the weather is good, guests are welcome to use the garden and the back area. I hesitate to call it a patio because it is where I pot plants, but it is where we grill and build fires. We have a battered fire pit and plenty of wood. I work at home, so my office is pretty much off limits, but everything is negotiable. Interaction with GuestsI will be in the house during your stay, so if any questions or problems arise, please let me know. I am happy to provide morning beverages for anyone who wants them. The NeighborhoodThis is an ethnically and culturally mixed neighborhood, and it is mixed zoning. Clover Nook once housed a beauty parlor; we found two of those old-fashioned hair dryers with the huge hoods in the basement. Toward the end of the street stands a collection of very small houses that were probably built to house mill employees. At the very end is the house where the songwriter Henry Clay Work was born. Among his best-known tunes are "Marching Through Georgia" and "My Grandfather's Clock." There is a statue of Work on Middletown's South Green, which is a few blocks from the house. Downtown Restaurants (listed in order of distance, farthest away first) Tibetan Kitchen Located at 574 Main Street, Tibetan Kitchen is an unassuming little place with great food. I have no idea whether it is authentic, but it’s certainly delicious. There is something for everyone here: curries, soups, dumplings, and more and lots of vegan and vegetarian options. BYOB (there is a corking fee). Bring patience—service can be slow and the place can get very busy, but the wait is well worth it. Also bring cash—no checks or credit cards are accepted. Closed Sundays. Iguanas Ranas Taquería Iguanas Ranas, 484 Main Street, is a family business that started small and keeps growing. I like everything I’ve had there but adore the fish tacos. The place gets noisy at night, so we usually go for lunch and try to get a table in the window. Full bar. Closed Sundays. Café 56 Café 56, at 102 Court Street, is one of our favorite Middletown restaurants. Open for breakfast and lunch, it features foods and culinary traditions from different countries and ethnicities. From the website: “The goal at Café 56 is to provide the customers with the experience of the different tastes from around the world.” The chef and owner is Sabrina Cortes, who is from Guatemala City. She also serves, buses tables, chats with everyone, and generally sees to everything. Ed Thereault bakes scones, croissants (real ones), country buttermilk biscuits, cinnamon rolls, and a variety of coffee cakes and muffins every morning. He also creates delicious desserts; some of his specialties include the Café 56 red velveteen cake with caramel buttercream icing and a coconut lime cake. Closed Sundays. Fiore II Restaurant This Italian restaurant, at 332 Main Street, is very pretty inside and out. All the food looks wonderful, but I always end up ordering scampi and trying to talk someone into sharing a bowl of lobster bisque. Beer and wine are available. I don’t know whether other alcohol is served, but I’ll find out and revise this. Closed Mondays. Amici Italian Grill Amici’s, 280 Main Street, specializes in northern Italian cooking. It has a full bar and is often crowded, especially on weekend nights. Open every day for lunch and dinner. Getting AroundMiddletown does have a bus system, and I have a schedule, but most people drive, walk, or bike. Parking is available in the driveway or on the street. Other Things to NoteRecently, two guests expressed concern that room doors cannot be locked and suggested that guests might feel more secure if they could lock their doors. I respect that, but we have no plans to put locks on the bedroom doors. This is a family home. We have never had a problem, and I am always here if guests are in the house. For people who want to be able to lock the bedroom door, a hotel might be a better choice. A guest arrived and asked if we could recommend a good massage therapist. We said sure--ours. Lugging her table, Joan made a house call. Everyone was pleased, and Joan decided she would be happy to do it again. If anyone who books at Clover Nook would like to arrange a massage, I will pass along Joan's number after the booking, and Joan and the guest can make whatever arrangement they like.

The SpaceOur guest room is downstairs, separated from the rest of the bedrooms in the house. There is a half bath that is primarily used by the guests right outside the bedroom door. The shower is located in another bathroom two rooms away on the same floor. The queen-size bed is made up with crisp white linens and our guests tell us it is very comfortable. The room also includes a clock radio with a jack to plug in an iPhone. During the summer, a fan or window air conditioning unit is available to keep the room comfortably cool. The guest room attaches via a small hallway to a formal living room. Our guests often like to use this as their own private sitting area, as our family rarely uses it. We can easily add a twin mattress to this room and have a child sleep on the couch, making it suitable for a family of two adults and two children. If you have additional adults, let us know and we can discuss options for housing your group. This is a place where you can relax in a spacious yard, surrounded by towering spruce and maple trees. Or maybe you prefer to sit and read a book beside a babbling brook filled with koi fish. Each season here has its own appeal. During the summer we love to grab an ice cream at Durham DariServe or drive 25 minutes down to Hammonassett State Beach. Fall means amazing maples dropping their jewel-colored leaves or taking in a Yale football game down in New Haven. In winter we can ice skate on frozen ponds in Durham or nearby Middlefield and then warm up with hot chocolate and nutella crepes at our favorite local coffee shop, Perk on Main. The comes spring and everything returns to life. Our yard looks like a Monet painting, with pastel leaves pushing their way out of the wooden branches. Please feel free to contact us with questions. We look forward to hosting you soon! Guest AccessGuests enjoy free wifi and the run of our 1 1/3 acre property. Interaction with GuestsWe are delighted to incorporate guests into our family life or give them their space. This is a very family-friendly property (we have three children of our own!), but we have also been happy to host couples looking to enjoy time away. You are welcome to join in our routines -- enjoying a shared television with cable or cooking in our modern kitchen. If you prefer, we're also happy to give you your space. It's up to you! The NeighborhoodWe love the rural character of our area. The location is terrific -- just 30 minutes from both New Haven and Hartford, convenient to Wesleyan University and minutes from Highway 91. Durham itself is a charming town with other colonial houses clustered around a classic town green, just a five minutes drive from our house. If you want to venture beyond our property, you can hike on 60 acres of town-owned open space across the street. When you are done, perhaps you would like to sip creamy milk fresh from the jersey cows who make their home at the farm on that land. Getting AroundPick-up and drop-off is available at the New Haven train station for a small additional fee, making a visit to our home easy for those in New York or Boston looking for a break from city life. Even without a car you can enjoy our lovely rural setting. Some guests have borrowed bikes from us and taken a ride to nearby Wadsworth Falls State Park for a hike to a lovely waterfall. Our house is a two mile walk from downtown Durham where you can get lunch or browse in a few small shops. Other Things to NoteWe share our home with Luther, a lazy Basset hound.

The SpaceResidential house with a small backyard, just a few steps from all that downtown has to offer as well as the Wesleyan campus. Newly renovated interior space with dining room, living room, full kitchen, breakfast nook/workstation area, front & back bedroom, full bathroom and access to shared laundry. There is also front porch seating (I keep the chairs inside when not in use) and a small seating area in the back yard (seasonally). Although the apartment does have air conditioning, there is a pretty consistent breeze, so in the summertime I encourage you to open the windows and enjoy the day (or night). In another nod to being environmentally conscious, there is a backyard clothes line: for extended visits, feel free to wash your clothes and hang them out to dry or put your towels out to dry after using the shower. Guest AccessFull solo access to the entire first floor apartment which has a dedicated guest parking spot in the back, between my garage and last of the large pine trees. There is also non-metered street parking if you'd prefer (street parking is a bit harder to obtain when the students are in session). Interaction with GuestsI live in the upstairs second floor apartment and can be available to answer questions & share some information about the area or leave you to enjoy your privacy. If you do need to contact me for any reason, you can text me or (if I'm home) use the old style twist door bell on my apartment front door. The NeighborhoodSeasonal local activities include: apple picking and golf at Lyman Orchards, PGA level golf at the TPC River Highlands (PGA Travelers tour stop), Skiing/Snowboarding & summer festivals at Powder Ridge Mountain Park, easy walking distance to all Wesleyan events, just a few blocks from Middlesex Hospital for visitation/employment stays, in town movie theater and great restaurants all within easy walking distance, close proximity to the CT river, Wadsworth Atheneum museum and the XL Civic Center in Hartford are just 18 miles away, and a very short drive to the beach and shorelines of Old Saybrook. Other Things to NoteAs I do live upstairs and we have neighbors, please be considerate and keep things relatively quiet after 11pm. The Wesleyan University 'Low Rise' student housing is directly across the street, so there is no-one around in the summertime (it's very vacant looking at that time) and during the school year it has more student activity. The apartment is a non-smoking space, but smokers can use the front porch seating area if needed (provided the front windows are closed): an ashtray is provided out there. If you do use the ashtray, please clean it upon your heading home.
