The SpaceThe home was designed and built green by the owners in 2005, starting with a 160-year-old barn which was moved 1000 ft to the back corner of the 12-acre property. Emphasis was placed on reusing all parts of the barn in the home, which creates an outstanding old world charm atmosphere which has visitors frequently commenting, "Wow!...this place needs to be featured in a magazine!" Master bed (king)/bath is on the main level and the upstairs bedroom (queen) and a sitting room has 1.5 baths (1/2 bath in bedroom and full bath with claw foot tub off twin bedroom) allowing ample room to relax in private for two couples. Cable, Apple TV in living, (DVD's player in master and an extensive VHS collection and player for upstairs guests). A private hot/cold shower on the deck (amazing view) is available for all guests. Fire pit adds the warmth for star gazing and moon rise nights! There are board games, frisbee, ladder ball, bocce, badminton and volleyball provided. Guest AccessWeekends (2 night min.) Holiday Weekends (3 night min), Weekly or Monthly! FRI 4-10PM Check in/out can be flexible with advance notice. You will have access to all 12 acres, home and deck. (We are on site in the cottage for property management and for any needs/questions that arise.) Interaction with GuestsWe are happy to interact with guests but understand if your wish is for us to become 'invisible' for those who visit wanting a quiet retreat. We are also happy to give a talk and tour on the building of 'Higher Ground'. Cynthia is a designer and Pepper is a efficiency expert/green builder/jack-of-all-trades. Both are certified in permaculture and have hopes of transforming 'Higher Ground' into a co-operative hobby farm homestead. The NeighborhoodMiddletown Springs is a quaint village of 800 about 30 minutes to Manchester on one of the loveliest routes through Vermont. Middlebury is 45 minutes and on the way to Burlington. The town has all basic amenities; fire dept, small general store, post office, library, churches, historical society and Sissy's Kitchen...Voted Best in Yankee Magazine: Best NE Picnic Cafe (cash & check only), all at the bottom of the property...a lovely 6 minute walk away through our meadows! Step back in time... cell service is only available in the town of Poultney (8 miles west)... so enjoy life the way it was before the madness set in ; ) However, there is fiber optic internet so not to panic about being completely out of touch with the world! Getting AroundMiddletown Springs can be reached by train (4.5 hours into Rutland) from Penn Station and by air from Boston (3 daily flights offered by Cape Air a 1 hour flight to/from Rutland)...and of course a beautiful ride from all points. Other Things to NoteWe are available for a green build workshop for an additional fee.
