The NeighborhoodDyers Bay is a sleepy cottage country village on the Georgian Bay shore of the Bruce Peninsula. There are no commercial establishments except the Applewood Inn & Restaurant. There are no gas stations or food stores. Filling up with fuel at Ferndale on the way up the peninsula would be a good idea. To the north of Dyers Bay is Tobermory and to the south is Lions Head; both villages have shopping and restaurants. We are close to the Bruce Peninsula National Park. Covering 155 square km, it consists of limestone cliffs, caves and underground streams, and ancient forests with some of the oldest trees in Canada. Shipwrecks from days long ago are preserved by Parks Canada in the Fathom Five National Marine Park offshore from Tobermory. The unique geological formations of Flowerpot Island and the coastal cliffs are features that attract visitors from around the world. The Bruce Trail starts in Tobermory winds its way 890 km down the escarpment to Niagara Falls. Some of the most spectacular hiking along the Bruce Trail can be found in and around the Dyers Bay area. The hike from Dyers Bay to the Devils Monument is an example of the Bruce Trail at it's best. Access to the Bruce Trail is a six minute walk from the cottage, offering hikers an easy way to enjoy the Bruce Peninsula's scenic footpaths and trails. The Bruce Peninsula National Park is short drive away as well. Cottagers can swim from the flat rocks alongside Dyers Bay Road (a five minute drive from the cottage) or at Singing Sands Beach (27 km from the cottage, half an hour away). Boat launch (no fees) at Dyers Bay government dock. Getting Around No public transit but a wonderful area in which to get around by walking or cycling. Other Things to NoteCell Phone reception is variable, affected by the weather. Eastlink DSL Broadband Internet & Wi-Fi. The cottage septic system is very sensitive. We have an Eco-Flow septic system which uses peat moss filters. The basic rule is do not put anything down the toilet or sinks other than natural waste and toilet paper (and be conservative with the paper). Use one ply paper whenever possible. There is a jar under the kitchen sink for disposing of waste cooking oils & marinates. Some people will tell you that there are two seasons in cottage country, winter and bugs. Unfortunately dealing with black flies, mosquitoes, ants, bees and wasps is a part of the cottage experience. A DEET based insect aerosol helps in repelling biting insects.

The SpaceNon Smoking, No pets please. We are central to all Bruce Peninsula activities/attractions! This house was recently renovated inside and out, everything is new and very clean; Master Bedroom has queen sized Bed, next to that is the kids room with bunk beds, and down a hall is the third bedroom with a double bed. The third bedroom is usually closed off to renters, but can be used upon request and approval, and possibly with an additional cost (especially in the off season when we would have to heat that room). We provide basic condiments in the full sized kitchen. Lots of extras available for families with young kids, including playpen, highchair, stroller, wagon to bring to beach, sand toys, indoor kids toys and books. Heat available for colder days/nights - individual room electric heaters as well as a propane "woodstove" style heater that can heat the entire main house. Internet and telephone available during high season (July, August, part of September). We do not have satellite or cable for television - there is one television in the house but you would have to use the DVD player for these. One DVD player is provided and several DVDs for various ages. Sorry we are not TV people but there are lots of other more interesting things to do on the Bruce Peninsula!! If you are there during high season, you could likely use the internet for Netflix although I've never tried it. Backyard is huge, swingset and kids play equipment, as well as a bonfire pit. Easy to purchase wood in town if we don't have any extra to leave behind. PLEASE NOTE: Prior to accepting payment, we will require names and ages of each person who will be occupying the house during the rental period. You will not be permitted to add people after that, as we base our rental commitments to some extent on the number of people. This cottage is ideally rented to a single family. We do consider 2 couples at times, but would involve an extra cost for use of the third bedroom. Note: further to pricing page, we generally only accept weekly rentals during high season (July and August) at rate of $850 per week, occasionally there are shorter stays available at rate of $120 per night for weeknights, and $140 for Sat/Sun. The same applies to long weekends during the shoulder season. Otherwise cheaper rates as indicated during shoulder season. Guest Access**Note: Housekeeping cottage, bring your own sheets and bath towels. If coming from overseas we can provide all linens. We always provide the rest of the bedding (duvets with covers that are washed) and hand towels as well as cleaning supplies. Please leave the cottage as you found it. Full kitchen with all the amenities, barbecue and patio set in backyard, swingset and younger kids play set. Closets in all bedrooms. As noted above, access to the third bedroom is not guaranteed, but can be arranged. Fully equipped kitchen. One bathroom. The house and yard is not shared with any other guests or with owners - you will have it to yourself. Interaction with GuestsWe can provide recommendations to guests for attractions in the area. We have a housekeeper and groundskeeper in Lions Head, and we are often in the area as well. We are very accessible by phone/text/email for any questions the guests may have. The NeighborhoodVery quiet, could hear a pin drop after 10pm on most nights. Dark sky area - thousands of stars and several shooting stars on clear nights. Great neighbours, mostly permanent residents with a couple of rentals on our street. VERY close to beach - can see it from the front yard, older kids can run back to the house for towels, etc. Great playground at the beach, trails nearby, walk to really cool caves on the escarpment, as well as to one of the highest points on the escarpment for an amazing lookout view. Getting Aroundno need for public transit - walk around Lions Head or drive to attractions such as Cypres Lake, Tobermory, Wiarton, Sauble Beach, Sandy Beach, Bruce Caves, Griegs Caves, Cabot Head Lighthouse, etc. Other Things to NoteMinimum 2 night rental during shoulder season, 3 nights for long weekends, 4 nights for thanksgiving. Weekly rentals only for July and August unless it is fairly last minute and something is not booked. We have had lots of great feedback from past guests, many are making this their annual family vacation destination.

The NeighborhoodAccess to the 885-km Bruce Trail is a quick walk from the cottage, and there are many gorgeous hikes up and down the peninsula overlooking Georgian Bay. Hope Bay is 15 minutes N of Wiarton, and 10 minutes S of Lion's Head. Hope Bay is a quiet, family-friendly community with a large sand beach and corner store with canoe, kayak and paddle boat rentals. The gravel road along the water is an informal recreation trail used extensively for walking, biking, hiking, jogging, and a mountain bike park is less than 10 minutes away. The area has many local amenities to enhance your visit. LOCAL FAVOURITES include area farmers' markets, farm-gate sales at local farms, fishing for trout and bass, night skies for star-gazing with fireflies in early July and August meteor showers, fresh and wild fish @ Howell's fish shop in Wiarton, spring water at Berford Lake, and Bruce Trail hikes along the escarpment edge overlooking Georgian Bay. Every August, the Pow Wow Trail comes to Cape Croker, and the Park hosts a Pow Wow weekend with drumming, ceremony, fancy dancers and great food such as bannock and bison burgers. Cape Croker Park is alcohol free during the Pow Wow weekend and on most long weekends too. Getting AroundAs a rural area, getting around or in to the towns of Lion's Head and Wiarton is vehicle dependent. Getting around Hope Bay is easy by foot, bicycle, kayak or canoe. My husband loves the motorcycle ride into Lion's Head and on to Isthmus Bay for the sweeping views of escarpment, sky and water. Cycling is also very popular along Bruce Road 9, but the cottage road is gravel (and not suitable for racing bikes). Other Things to NoteKitchen is stocked with staples i.e. herbs, spices, rubs, tea, coffee, butter, olive oil, maple syrup, sugar, flour, etc. For everyone's convenience, all food supplies are shared, and guests are asked to please replace any staple i.e. butter or sugar as they are used up. All beds come with 100% cotton sheets, towels, duvet covers, down and synthetic duvets and pillows. Extra linens for each bed, wool blankets and bedding stored in the back bedroom. Guests are welcome to use the towels, linens and bedding provided as long as they are returned laundered. Alternatively, guests may bring their own bedding and towels from home.

The SpaceWe love families with children and want to share our family vacation home with other families. This is not a cottage for all-night parties or loud music or a bunch of buddies getting away. It is also a non-smoking property. Renters must do a thorough cleaning prior to leaving. We cater to families with children - six people maximum with no more than four adults. Our waterfront cottage is set back from Lake Huron, amongst cedar trees, and provides lots of privacy from the road and neighbours. Be prepared to see paddlers or a family of geese pass by in the water. The main cottage is a clean one-story bungalow, with all-pine interior. Most rooms have ceiling fans, and as the cottage is surrounded by rock and trees, it is usually a comfortable temperature inside. Each room has windows that open. You enter a small foyer where outerwear can be stored, and then you head into the kitchen with a microwave, 24" oven/stove top and a full fridge with a small freezer on top, plus cupboards full of kitchenware including crock pot, coffee maker, toaster, George Foreman grill, casserole dishes, salad spinner, cutting boards, dishes, glassware, cutlery etc. There are also extra containers for you to take your leftover food in, for those hikes on the Bruce Trail. Paper towels, standard condiments and plastic wrap are supplied, as well as tea towels and dish soap. The water is tested monthly and is safe to drink. However, we prefer to bring water for drinking, and you may wish to do so also. There is a BBQ outside - tin foil provided. Remember though - clean the BBQ after each use, or a bear may find your crumbs. From the kitchen, you see into the open concept dining area/living area. There is a large pine table for everyone to gather at, whether for a board game, or for a meal, or just good conversation. It's an easy move to the one of two sofas, a rocking chair, or a swivel chair. Satellite TV is available. The full bathroom features a tub with shower, plus toilet and sink in a vanity. Shampoo, liquid soap and toilet tissue provided. Please bring your own bathroom towels. Kitchen towels are provided though. Bedroom #1 has a closet and built-in drawers and has an Ikea white iron queen-sized bed that is already made up with linens for you. The new mattress is quality foam. Bedroom #2 also has a closet and built-in drawers, and has a single-over-single bunkbed. There is also a separate double bed. Again, these mattresses are quality foam from Foamite and Ikea, and are made up and ready for you to sleep in. The front sun room is our favourite - it is a great place to sit and read or just watch the water from the windows covering two walls. You can also head out onto the front patio from the sun room. Outdoor patio furniture is available, including folding chairs that you can lie in, or sit in, or move to around the fire pit. We do supply your first night of firewood, and then there are numerous places in the area to purchase more. For older children, the attached bunkie can be available as well. Like the main cottage building, it is decorated entirely with pine. There is a closet and two extra-long twin beds with Foamite mattresses. Sheets and pillows adorn the bunkie beds. A small bathroom can be found there as well - sink and toilet only. If you are looking for even more privacy, there is an enclosed gazebo with a couch, lamps, and two hammocks. The property is set back from the water about 150 feet, but it is a quick walk to the water's edge, where it is shallow enough to let young children play, and deep enough for adults to swim. The water is clear, and water shoes are provided - the bottom varies from flat rock to boulders. Often, you can see baby geese by, or paddlers, No kayaks or canoes are available on site, but can be rented locally and put in here. It is about a ten minute paddle to go directly across the bay, or you can spend endless time just paddling around in the bay. More experienced paddlers can head north or south along the shoreline of Lake Huron. The waters can be unpredictable though! From the road, you see lots of cedars and only a very quick glimpse of the cottage. After you go back the driveway, the property opens up to the buildings and to small white stone landscaping over most of the property. There are plenty of trees separating you from the neighbours. Children may enjoy playing Robin Hood amongst the trees and into the tree fort. The property is a 10-minute drive from Tobermory, where you will find a grocery store, churches, library, internet access, ChiCheeman ferry to Manitoulin Island, diving, tennis court, golf course, laundromat, airport, Fathom Five National Park, Parks Canada visitor centre, and eateries and shops. It is also a short drive to Singing Sands beach and walkway, Bruce Trail, Cabot Head Lighthouse, Dunks Bay sand beach, Bruce Peninsula National Park, Flowerpot Island (requires boat ride). You will find an abundance of outdoor hiking and exploring opportunities. Wildlife enjoys the serenity, and you will be sure to see plenty of birds, snakes, squirrels and chipmunks. Although you can feed them peanuts at the fire pit, you must be conscientious of cleaning up food - inside and outside - there have been bears nearby! If you are looking for R&R, in a clean, quiet setting, unplugged, then this may be the place for you. It is a country setting, so if the hydro was to go off, you have no water (except from the lake). There is a phone for local calls and incoming calls only - cell phones usually work. Public telephones are located in Tobermory. You are the only ones on the property. We are accessible by phone at all times, and have someone available to assist with unexpected problems. If your family is looking for a quiet, safe vacation, consider our cottage. Remember that it is self-cleaning when you leave (be sure to read the house rules), but you don't have to deal with bedding! We do require a written agreement prior to renting as well. This ensures that everyone has an enjoyable stay. Contact us if you have any questions. Guest AccessYou have the entire property to yourself! Interaction with GuestsYou can contact us by phone in the case of an emergency or if you have questions. Otherwise, we leave you alone! The NeighborhoodThe property is on Warner Bay, a quiet inlet of Lake Huron, approximately a ten minute drive south of Tobermory. Generally, there are only cottages on the water side of the road, and due to the many trees, everyone is rather private, even when there may only be 100 feet between cottages. The non-water side of the road is forested. Depending on where you stand, you can see buildings across the bay or down the shoreline. Getting AroundThe cottage is located a ten minute drive south of Tobermory. We do have cottage-grade bicycles on site. If you are so inclined, you may wish to rent a kayak or canoe and paddle along the shoreline.
