Corehead Farmhouse is set in a unique and tranquil location nestling at the head of the Annanwater Valley, close to the historic Devils Beef Tub, 5 miles north of the Spa Town of Moffat in the beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway. This delightful farmhouse enjoys spectacular views of unspoilt rural countryside - a little hideaway, yet very accessible, at only 7 miles from the M74, an hour drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh and 45 minuted from Carlisle. Corehead Farmhouse has great cultural and historical significance. It is most famous for its association with William Wallace, whose sister married the laird of Corehead Tower, Sir Thomas Halliday. The Farmhouse was built on the site of the Tower House. The Devil's Beef Tub is one of the most iconic landmarks in the South of Scotland. It is a cavernous hollow in the hills where the notorious Border Reivers once hid their stolen cattle. The Devil's Beef Tub forms part of Corehead, a stunning area of the land in the heart of the Southern Upland hills of Scotland which also includes Hart Fell, the highest hill in Dumfriesshire. This traditional farmhouse is comfortably furnished in a traditional style with a lovely welcoming atmosphere. It boasts many original features and is quirky in design to offer a spacious 4 bedroomed family holiday home, sleeping up to 8 guests. Relax with a book in the 'snug' with the real woodburning stove, or enjoy the cosy atmosphere of the lounge with its large sumptuous sofas and original sandstone fireplace which dates back to 1600. The heart of any farmhouse can be found in the traditional farmhouse kitchen with solid fuel Rayburn and breakfast table. In addition to the main kitchen there is a utility to the rear with dishwasher, and washing machine. This leads to a cloakroom toilet. At the front of the house is a large conservatory which enjoys outstanding views onto the garden and the valley beyond. The conservatory provides comfortable seating as well as dining for 8 guests. Guests are invited to explore the large private grounds or sit on the patio to take in the unspoilt countryside. The enclosed 1/2 acre garden provides plenty of space for children and pets to explore in safety. Upstairs the split balcony leads in one direction to the two double bedrooms, both with en-suite shower and lovely views of the valley. The second staircase leads to the family bathroom which is shared by the third double bedroom and spacious twin bedroom. There is ample parking for 3 cars at the front of the house and several cars in the farmyard at the rear. Moffat, a historic spa town in the Annandale Valley, is set in the heart of beautiful countryside. A quaint and historic town that offers excellent shopping, places to eat, a wonderful park and an excellent base for discovering the local area and beyond. Moffat's wide, tree-lined high street retains many of its original characteristics and the town has strong connections with both the Moffat and Johnstone clans. A sheep farming town in years gone by, this history is depicted by the Ram Statue on the high street. The Devil's Beef Tub, a large depression in ground north of the town, aided the sheep and cattle rustlers who operated in the area, allowing them a place to hide the animals before moving them on. Moffat was a spa town until 1921 when the Hydropathic Hotel burnt to the ground. The surrounding hills and the local section of the Southern Upland Way provide excellent walking opportunities, while the River Annan is good for fishing. There is an interesting 'events diary' running throughout the season with something for all the family to enjoy. Corehead Farmhouse is a unique location nestling at the head of the Annanwater, offering a great get away, The luscious and spacious enclosed garden, offers a safe environment for children and pets. The SpaceBeechwood Country House is a beautiful country home, set in a spectacular quiet location. Great home for large get togethers, with ample space for relaxation and privacy. Each of the 7 bedrooms has their own en suite facilities and use of a gym and games room. The local village, a short five minute walk has all the basics you would need. The pubs are atmospheric and welcoming, often full of local colour. For sport out with walking and cycling there is a golf course and two tennis courts. For children there are three play parks including a boating lake and crazy golf. One note of caution for those with very small children, there is a small pond with a maximum depth of two foot, so adult supervision of small children whilst in the garden is necessary. Guest AccessGuest will have access to all the rooms in the property, with the exception of the laundry room due to the nature of the chemicals and industrial appliances. Should guests wish access to a washing machine and tumble dryer during their stay, please make a request and the area will be cleared and opened up for use.In addition to the living areas there is a games room, a gym, which will be used by the guests at their own risk. Children under the age of 18 are not permitted to make use of the gym. Please not for families with small children, that there is a small pond in the front garden, so children should be supervised at all times. An area of outstanding beauty, nature lovers will be in their element from the stunning Grey Mares tail area to the quaint villages along the Galloway coastline, something for everyone. An area known for hosting many creative events and home to numerous successful artists. Getting AroundThere is a daily bus service to both Glasgow, Edinburgh, Carlisle and Edinburgh from the village centre. The nearest train station is found in Lockerbie, a twenty minute car ride away. For those with a car their a good motorway links to Glasgow and Carlisle and a very picturesque route to the capital Edinburgh. Other Things to NoteHere is a short guide to some of the activities available locally: Welcome to Beechwood Country House Dear Guests, Welcome, I wish you a wonderful and happy stay, please make yourself at home and make the most of your time here. Buying provisions The main grocery store is the Co Op which stocks a decent range of groceries, alcohol etc. And is found adjacent to the Moffat Mill , behind the Benmar Garage. Can thoroughly recommend the butchers in the village, for various barbecue meats and some scottish delicacies (the steak pie is delicious!) The bakers is also worth a visit for sweet treats , a family favourite include the large cookies and banana loaf! No visit is complete without a pop into the Moffat Toffee Shop, renowned for its huge selection of sweets , traditional and new (There is also a decent selection of whiskies at the back of the shop) Eating in and around Moffat There are a good few places cafes in Moffat, and the majority offer good, reasonably priced breakfasts and lunches. I would thoroughly recommend Jack and Rachels right at the beginning of the high street on the walk down into the village. Everything is cooked to order fresh and delicious, particularly the breakfasts and steak and onion served on ale buns. Cakes are all homemade on site. Another place to eat from morning till late is Brodies. This is a more contemporary establishment, particularly good for eggs benedict for brunch (great hangover cure!) Brodie's also opens in the evening for Dinner, but reservation is recommended (phone number hidden). Costing around £20 - £25 for a starter and a main, with a licence and a cocktail menu. The Italian restaurant Claudios (phone number hidden), has a good reputation for both traditional and contemporary Italian cuisine, with the added benefit of a takeaway service. Another takeaway and sit in restaurant is the Indian Bombay Cuisine (phone number hidden) which has a mixed reputation, but I have always found the food reasonable. Pubs If its a nice day and you fancy sitting in the sunshine, take a drink in the garden at the back of the Moffat House Hotel, its pretty and the food is also good. The stag seems to be the pub of choice for the locals. The Star is the narrowest pub in the world (allegedly!). Out and about For walkers; There are many beautiful walks in and around Moffat. Directly behind the house the Beechwood woods provide a few easy walks that are signposted and allow great views over the town and the surrounding area. The Devils Beef tub. A ten minute drive away along the A701 towards Edinburgh, you will find The Devil's Beef Tub, (Marquis of Annandale's Beef-Tub, Beef-Stand, MacCleran's Loup) a deep, dramatic hollow in the hills north of Moffat. The name derives from its use by the Border Reivers, namely the Johnstone clan, whose enemies referred to them as "devils", to hide stolen cattle. Grey Mares Tail Best known for its magnificent waterfall – the fifth highest in the UK – and uniquely dramatic scenery, Grey Mare's Tail is a superb example of a hanging valley. A little f further on takes you to St Marys loch , a great spot on a sunny day, with refreshments available from the cafe on the main road or the well known and historic Tibbie Shiels (website hidden) Forrest Ae Forest is the perfect place to visit, whether you want to relax with a picnic beside the river, watch woodland wildlife, stroll through the trees or burn off some serious energy on horseback or on the superb mountain bike trails. The waymarked routes include gentle rambles beside the sparkling Water of Ae as well as longer hikes into the hills with wonderful (website hidden) Forest lies close to Ae village, just off the A701 Moffat to Dumfries. The tradition tibetan building stand oddly in the backdrop of the Scottish scenery, an interesting day out.
