Only 2.5 hours from pretoria Mutapa Lodge is the perfect self drive destination. Other Things to NoteMutapa’s breeding programme is playing a role to grow threatened species numbers by increasing the effectiveness of conservation efforts by fellow breeders’ in South Africa. Over the years, we are making a contribution to this by using scientifically sound, collaborative processes and ideas that bring together people with diverse perspectives and knowledge to catalyze positive conservation of colour variant species.
Mutapa supports an integrated approach to colour variants breeding through joint development of breeding strategies and conservation actions with other responsible fellow breeders.
We are proud to be part of such vibrant and rapid growing industry and we are not only making a contribution to conservation, but we are also making a substantial contribution to economic and social transformation through job creation and economic development opportunities within or local communities.
There's more to it than just putting rams and ewes together in camps .Mutapa’s black impala breeding programme is carefully managed to control numbers and to prevent inbreeding. The aim is to ensure as much genetic variation in the breeding population as possible and the best genetics in the groups.
We are achieving excellent horn and body size results from carefully selected breeding ewes from Rooibokkrall area and “Zuma”, Mutapa’s stud breeding ram which measured 22’’ at 24 months. At 3 years old he is estimated to measure greater than 23”.See Pic. Below
Golden Wildebeest (Connochaetes)
The Golden Gnu is believed to have roamed freely in Botswana (incorporated under the ancient Monomutapa kingdom) but over the years due to their characteristic colour difference, their numbers were driven down almost to extinction trough inconsiderate trophy hunting. It is believed that currently in South Africa Golden wildebeest numbers are less than 10,000 animals. Our foundation breeding herds originated from the Tuli block in Botswana.
Yellow Bless buck
Only second to the wildebeest, possibly one the most disjointed specie, yet so beautiful is the yellow bless buck. Our stud breeding yellow ram “Tempo” brought in from the Eastern Cape was purchased in March 2015 from a reputable local breeder. “Tempo” sired by the 18’’ Roland is estimated to be greater than 15” at 2 years of age and will be initiated with a group of hartwater bless buck ewes, some of which are white faced or masked blesbuck.
Our spiralled horn “Prince charming “the Nyala bull seen in the pic. below ,has since 2014 been charming Mutapa’s ever so graceful Nyala ewes with his amazing horn spread and produced the most stunning off spring.
Hugely exciting was the discovery of dark Kudu strains within Mutapa’s Kudu herds .Dark Kudo breeding in Limpopo is stirring great excitement and head scratching amongst our learnt breeder’s and scientist fraternity.Mutapa in partnership with one of the leading breeders in this category will be jointly developing gene diversity through a new dark Kudu breeding programme .
