The SpaceChill out in this gorgeous beach house equipped with a huge kitchen and bathroom and plenty of open living spaces. Airy and spacious, with lots of light, this house is built for relaxation and to enjoy the jungle feel of the organic tropical garden.
This home is an open-air space with living walls which provide a lot of light and give off a great energy throughout the house. The organic tropical garden is a wonderful feature that can be enjoyed by everyone. With the focus on creating a negative carbon footprint, and contributing more to the earth than we're taking out, this wonderful eco-house utilizes composting toilets and organic garbage disposal. We also conserve and recycle water, which is harvested from the roof, and we discourage the use of plastics (bottles, bags, packets, etc). There is no fridge, no TV, no fans and no air-con, however, WiFi is available. Because of the open-sided balconies, and possible safety issues, this house is not suitable for very small children.
Accommodation is upstairs in The Loft where guests can sleep with fabulous views of the river and nearby mangrove forest. The Loft is perfect for two couples, but if you have a larger group and you'd like to stay at Secret Garden, the open-plan space is very comfortable, and sleeps up to 9 people (two double beds, two double mattresses and one single mattress), its own chill-zone and a hammock. There is also a covered camping space for two tents available downstairs for a small nightly fee.
At Secret Garden we work very hard to create a negative carbon footprint, giving a lot more back to the earth than we take out, and we hope that our guests can be mindful of the environment and do the same, while enjoying the beautiful house and gardens. Guest AccessGuests have access to the whole house and all its facilities and amenities. WiFi and use of the kitchen is is available to all. There is plenty of space for food storage and an ice-box for keeping things fresh overnight. Ice is available for purchase in the village. Interaction with GuestsThe owner, Roni, is a retired executive chef who lives onsite and offers a hearty breakfast, fresh tropical fruit juices and shakes, and fruity rum cocktails at an additional cost (Breakfast: $4 per person). Guests can also request lunch and/or dinner in advance. Gluten-free, diary-free, and sugar-free menus are available, and any other special dietary requirements can also be catered to.
On the premises, we also offer a number of workshops including Chocolate-Making, Basket-Weaving, Traditional Ecuadorian Cuisine, Going Bananas (Cooking with bananas), and Herbal Remedies where we make our own mosquito repellents and natural medicines from herbs in the garden. Workshops are booked 24hrs in advance and cost $10 per person.
Roni also makes organic hot sauces, pickles, jams, and chocolate fudge sauce which are available for purchase. The NeighborhoodPlease note that Secret Garden is not situated on the beach, but is located at the back of the village, a 3-minute walk from the beach.
The best thing about this neighborhood is lying in bed at dawn and listening to the Howler Monkeys in the jungle, and the waves break on the beach. There are plenty of shops nearby to purchase groceries and fresh produce, and a number of restaurants specializing in the local cuisine. There is even an amazing bakery/cafe with fresh cakes made on the premises every day. Ask your host for her recommendations on the best places to eat depending on your tastes and she will guide you to the right place every time. Getting AroundThere are 10 buses per day to and from Esmeraldas in the north.
There are also buses to and from Pedernales in the south, via Chamanga.
Taxis from Esmeraldas Airport are also available. There is also a taxi service to and from Quito. Please let us know if you require a reliable taxi service.
On-street parking is also available. Other Things to NoteThere are two safe-keeping boxes to store valuables. Guests will need to provide their own padlocks.
Guests should understand Mompiche is in a tropical region of Ecuador and that there are mosquitoes -- mostly in the hours of dawn and dusk. It's recommended to bring good mosquito repellent with you. Mosquitoes are more prevalent from January to March, during the wet season.
