Magnolia House offers an open floor plan, which is flooded with natural light through the large picture windows and many skylights. Spacious, well stocked kitchen makes cooking a pleasure. Sun yourself on one of three private decks overlooking the beautifully designed perennial gardens,or enjoy the handcrafted stone fireplace on a cool evening. Sitting atop Horn's Hill on Monhegan Island, The Charles House is a beautiful home with ocean and sunset views from the upstairs. In the evenings, you can see lighthouses glowing along the coast of Maine from upstairs. The house is located in a private place on the island and is only a five minute walk to the nearest cliffs which line the east side of Monhegan. And a five minute walk in the opposite direction to get to the village. My home has a spacious kitchen with natural wood counters/cabinets and the living room opens up onto a large deck that looks over a lawn and toward the harbor and neighboring island, Manana. The home has lovely clear drinking water and beautiful Maine art decorates the walls. It is my home for most of the year, so the house is fully stocked and has quite a few ammenties that other rentals don't offer on the island. I offer high speed internet connection at the house as well. There is a large game closet upstairs with puzzles, games and toys for all ages, and a wide assortment of books for all ages. I have an extensive collecion of Art books in the house, it is my mother's life-long collection and includes over 200 books about many kinds of art. Although you will see a woodstove in the pictures, the house is set up in the summer time for propane use instead. There is a very effective floor furnace that is available for renters that wish to have heat. Unfortunately, the wood stove gets disconnected, and is not an option. I have a number of bird feeders around and feed the birds year round here on the property, so there is an active bird population that visit the yard every day..... I have a couple of adorable pair of Carolina wrens that sing atop the branches every day, and in the spring/summer the thrashers and mockingbirds are fun to listen to up here on top of the hill. Monhegan is a bird migratory stop off, so many species of birds visit the island in the spring and fall. So bring your binoculars! When there is a 'sea' built up , you can hear the surf crashing against the rocks at Lobster Cove while sitting on the deck.... Lobster cove is not far from the house, and the surf there can be terrific. There is always a lovely breeze that goes through the house if you leave windows or the doors open - and very little problems with mosquitos or other bugs. The biggest advantage to renting my home is the privacy and quiet that you will experience amidst the trees and birds and breezes at the top of the hill.... the house is on one of the highest planes of the island, yet ocean views are limited to the upstairs windows because quiet and privacy of trees, gardens, flowers and birds prevail year-round.

A charming, private, romantic, island cottage built in the 1920's that overlooks the ocean and is surrounded by lovely gardens. Bedrooms and decks look out to the sea. Three decks follow the sun from morning to glorious evening sunsets. Sleeps 5--a queen master bedroom, two twins in the other bedroom, and a daybed on the sunporch that sleeps one, with a single bathroom with fixed, wall shower inside the large porcelain bathtub. A fireplace in the living room with free firewood is the only source of heat. There is a well-furnished and romantic kitchen and outdoor charcoal grill. Even a small vegetable garden of lettuce, basil, and tomatoes when in season. Monhegan, sitting 10 miles off the coast of mid-coast Maine, has a storied history of active lobstering and a varied landscape that has attracted many pleine air artists from the 19th C. onward including Jamie Wyeth and Rockwell Kent who both lived on the island. Two thirds of the island is preserved land with 17 miles of hiking trails (requiring good hiking shoes) out to the highest headlands on the eastern seaboard. There are only a few dirt roads on the village side and a few pickup trucks for establishments and lobstermen, so it's a "walking island". Spring and Fall bird migrations bring many serious birders. A fantastic historical and art museum in the lighthouse buildings along with several inns and restaurants, cafes, a brewery, and gift shops offer a local island charm. There are various musical and literary events during the summer, along with yoga and massage offerings. A great fish market offers everything from fresh lobsters to oysters, mussels, tuna, scallops, and other fish. Wifi connection offered. The cottage and island offers a wonderful retreat from this madding world--a place to refuel and relax and touch base with yourself and a simpler world.
