The SpaceThis unfinished timber frame cabin sits on 40 private acres in Northeast Nevada and boasts a fantastic view. The ranch is adjacent to 1280 acres of Federal grazing land, so if you're looking for quiet isolation, this is the perfect place. The cabin is 200 square feet and is a single room with PV electricity, a refrigerator, and a large redwood deck overlooking the valley. There is some limited water for washing, but no potable water on site.
The ranch is approximately eight miles from a paved county road and another eight miles to Interstate 80 in Elko County. The nearest town with gas and provisions is Montello, NV about 20 miles away. You will need a high-clearance vehicle to access the ranch and cabin.
There is no bed, so you will need to bring an air mattress and bedding. There's plenty of private tent pads for additional guests and kids. There are no toilets, only a shovel, but there is an outdoor shower and enough collected rainwater to last 2-4 people one week.
For cooking, there's an excellent grill and barbeque pit with cast iron griddle built in. There's also a propane single burner stove for heating water. There are limited utensils and cookware. Washing is done with rainwater heated on the fire.
The property is home to abundant flora and fauna, including juniper trees aging to approximately 600 years, cactus, horned toads, badgers, hares, bobcats, and several families of coyotes. No rattlesnakes are present due to lack of water sources and there are no black bears. The stargazing is second to none and you will definitely see shooting stars every night from the deck.
The cabin sits at 6500 feet elevation and is very exposed to the elements which can make for dramatic weather watching and gorgeous sunsets. The constant breeze during the day keeps the bugs away and the temperature reasonable. It is dry desert conditions most of the time, hot during the day, but you will need warm clothes as the air cools quickly at night.
This is an ideal location for someone who needs absolute quiet to write, read or perhaps to paint. The nearest neighbors are one valley over, so you can make music and not disturb anyone. If you need diversions, there's great hikes up to the top of the mountain (four miles round trip) and there's abandoned towns down in the valley a short drive away. Visiting the town of Montello for gas, ice and a beer is worthwhile. And if you're feeling adventurous and have GPS, locating the hidden Murdock Springs about 8 miles around to the other side of the Mountain is a rewarding challenge.
The ranch can accommodate larger groups using tents and we may have access to cabins at a neighboring ranch if needed. Inquire!
Verizon and AT&T smartphones work on the property, so if you need to work online, you can, but service is sometimes spotty.
Getting AroundNo public transportation. A high-clearance vehicle, preferably 4x4, is required.
