The SpaceI designed the Bunk Room as a casual, versatile, quiet retreat for friends and family visiting the farm for a day or for a season. It has hosted colleagues who needed a quiet place to work on a manuscript and groups of teenagers who came to work the cherry harvest. There are currently two full beds, two desks, two walk-in closets with bureaus, satellite and DSL connections, mini-fridge and microwave and a large adjacent bath with walk-in shower and jacuzzi tub. There are two additional fold-out beds in the sofa and the sitting room sectional for a possible 4 total double beds. Spacious for two, fairly comfortable for four or even six. (Small additional charge for more than two.) The downstairs entrance is directly adjacent. A game trail crosses the meadow directly below the house, so if you glance out the window, you may see deer, coyotes, and wild turkeys strolling by. The daylight basement stays cool in the summer so no AC is needed. It has electric heat for the cool season. Breakfast is generally around 0700. I can't guarantee that others will like what I cook, but it is a bit of a drive to a restaurant. You are welcome to share what I'm having or use the kitchen to prepare your favorites. (Generally juice, milk, coffee, eggs, toast, or cereal, yogurt, fruit in season.) Guest AccessThe Bunk Room opens directly into the library / sitting room. The laundry and home gym with olympic weights is just around the corner. In case of (negotiable) extra guests, there is a hide-a-bed in the sectional, and another spare room upstairs. You are welcome to join me upstairs in the Great Room and to use the kitchen or barbecue. But realize that I am a busy bachelor in a large house, (with 4-footed helpers!) and this is a working farm, so the house is neat but not always spotless. It's casual. You are free to enjoy our private woodlands (ca. 100 acres) but there are a few working areas (e.g. my workshop, outbuildings) that you should not enter alone. However, if you need to borrow a tool, or use the shop to work on your bike, don't hesitate to ask! Please check with me in advance to negotiate about parties or larger gatherings. There are banquet tables available but I may need to get them out of storage. The 3-bay garage and adjacent courtyard can sometimes be used as event space with some advance planning. Interaction with GuestsThis can be variable. I work from home, so I will likely be present most of the time. Generally, I'm a quiet but friendly person. It's possible that I may be busy with a project deadline, but I may have time to hang out with guests. And I do like to get away to ride my bike or sail my boat or even go out for the evening from time to time! If guests prefer to keep to themselves, they can use the separate entrance. My room is in the Loft - the opposite end of the house. The NeighborhoodMy home is located in a secluded private woodland on our family farm. We are located directly on or next to popular bicycling and hiking routes. People frequently stop here to photograph our wildflowers! Waterfront beaches at Mosier or Rowena are only a few minutes drive (or bicycle). The Dalles and Hood River are both about fifteen minutes drive (or a slightly longer bike ride.) There are many possibilities for scenic drives, winery and museum tours and other seasonal attractions. Mosier is on the eastern slope of the Cascade range and marks the beginning of transition to the drier climate of Eastern Oregon. As you travel from Portland, this is often "the first place that it isn't raining." Getting AroundThere is really not much public transit here. You will need to have a vehicle, or at least a bicycle. At a stretch, you could bus to Hood River or The Dalles (or train to White Salmon) and bike from there. Other Things to NoteBicycles, SUPs, and other water toys are available to lend or rent, but use of these items is entirely at your own risk. The back yard has a hot tub and fire pit, and lawn games such as horseshoes and croquet are available. There are peacocks roaming around. The property is not necessarily "child safe," so if you have children we should discuss supervision and safety. If you go into the woods, you should be prepared to encounter poison oak, coyotes, rattlesnakes, wasps, and ticks. Not really dangerous - you just need to recognize them and interact appropriately.

The SpaceI live in a rustic 2BR ranch house, downtown Mosier (5 miles east of Hood River). It's beautiful here, with world-class biking, hiking, windsurfing, kiteboarding, etc.. I am only 1 hour from Portland, 40 minutes from Mt. Hood Meadows, and 15 minutes from The Dalles. My home is clean but definitely rustic (if you don't fully understand this word, just (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) it). It is basically one of the last "surf shacks" in the Gorge. The beach is a 10-minute walk from my house. My cat behaves like a dog and is quite friendly. He is generally not allowed into the guest bedroom (unless you want him there). I clean out his litter box daily. What's weird about this house (which WAS the old Mosier motel manager's house) is the two bedrooms adjoin each other. In other words, they share a wall. I have discrete access to the outside via my bedroom's own door, so I don't need to pass through the guest bedroom to get to the rest of the house. If your bedroom door is shut, I will not pass. However, if it's hot and the AC (located in the guest room) is running, I gotta have the adjoining door cracked open so my bedroom stays cool enough for sleeping. Some Americans have trouble with this situation. I don't. I recently had a new shower case installed around the tub/shower. What an improvement! It still needs paint though. My home is non-smoking; this includes the stoop because otherwise smoke will get sucked into the house due to pressure differentials created by wind, etc.. Also, we have a serious burn ban in effect here. So please be conscious of your fires (including smoking and butts, which cause many wildfires) which technically are not allowed outside at all. Thank you. Guest AccessFull access to the kitchen, bathroom, and storage is granted. Interaction with GuestsI think I'm friendly, but it depends how busy I am and what the weather is doing. My free time involves work, weather, recreation, surf and garden projects, etc. I enjoy sharing breakfast, leading a short tour of Mosier, or simply giving some local tour advice. Incidentally, I do not believe in pandering; I see it as a form of dishonesty. So, if you ask for my opinion, I will give it to you...whether it matches your opinion or not. Disagreement is OK and can be a sign of respect and the segway to learning and growth. Disagreement is not a sin or crime. The NeighborhoodDowntown Mosier, close to the school. It is quite safe and quiet at night. I have lived here 7 years and consider the neighborhood to be safe. The train comes through town several times/day. So you might want to bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper or wish to sleep in. There is a cider house and taco stand within sight of my house for some food and drink. And there is also a quickie-mart for some staples. It closes at 8pm. Getting AroundThere is the CAT Gorge bus (which does a roundtrip from The Dalles to Portland every Tuesday and Wednesday, last time I checked). You may bike to Hood River (7 miles) and The Dalles (15 miles) on the Scenic Highway 30. Or drive. Or walk. Or float your boat. Other Things to NoteMy home is rustic but clean. It's not a luxury vacation home. You may find that in Hood River or even someplace else in Mosier and for much more $. On the bright side, I am right in the middle of biking, hiking, windsurfing, kiting, SUP, etc. Bring your bike!

The SpaceOur cozy cabin includes 2 queen size beds and has a fully stocked kitchen with teas and locally roasted coffee as well as the basics cooking ingredients. The main source of heat is a wood stove. There is a small electric heater but I wouldn't depend on it for heating the whole cabin. We provide firewood. The cabin is located minutes from the top of Syncline biking trails and Catherine Creek trails. We are in the country and the last 3/4 mile is on a maintained gravel road and the cabin is at the end of the driveway. If you are looking for a place where you can enjoy the quietness, look at the stars and unwind, this is it! The cabin is not located in town. It is 8 miles outside of White Salmon. You can enjoy some wonderful restaurants, wine tasting and micro-brewery in White Salmon and Hood River. If you feel like staying in, you will have access to a BBQ and a full size stove/oven to prepare meals. There is a grocery store in White Salmon if you want to stock up on supplies before heading up the hill. Harvest Market is located on Wauna St. FYI: There is no wifi and cell reception can be spotty. Texting comes through with most carriers. The cabin is located on a property with 2 other dwellings. One is our home and the other is a yurt(glamping!) that is used for friends and family. The cabin is private and other then the comings and goings of a few people and the kids playing, it's quiet and secluded. Interaction with GuestsWe will share the property with you since we live here, but you will have all the privacy you need. We also like to meet our guests ! The NeighborhoodWe are in the country. The cabin sits on 10 acres. Walking trails right from your front door. Please stay on trails and respect no trespassing signs. The cabin is located at the end of the road/driveway. Please note that the last 3/4 mile is a gravel road. The nearest grocery store and restaurants are 8 miles. Getting Around8 miles from White salmon. Amtrak stop in Bingen. You will need a car, although, we have seen quite a few bikers come up the hill. :) Other Things to NoteThe additional guest fee only applies if there is more then 2 adults. No extra fee for kids 18 and under.

The beach is a 10-minute walk from my house. It's rough on the outside but clean and comfy on the inside. If you desire a luxury rental of much greater cost, try Hood River. My innkeeper (cat) behaves like a dog and is quite friendly. He is generally not allowed into the guest bedroom (unless you want him there). I clean out his litter box daily. What's interesting about this house (which WAS the old Mosier motel manager's house) is the two bedrooms adjoin each other. In other words, they share a wall. Don't worry about privacy; there is a door between the two that may stay closed. There is an exterior door and half-bath connected to the main bedroom, so there is no need to pass through the smaller guest bedroom for access to the rest of the house. You will have total privacy (other than sharing a wall). If it is HOT, I suggest opening the shared door in order to share the cool air from the AC. :) I recently had a new shower case installed around the tub/shower. What an improvement! *My home is non-smoking; this includes the stoop because otherwise smoke will get sucked into the house due to pressure differentials created by wind, etc.. Thank you for abiding by this simple and strict rule. Also, keep in mind this is a very dry desert with extreme fire hazard. Please consider this when venturing out to smoke and do NOT casually flick your smoldering butt away. Guest AccessThe whole house is accessible. Interaction with GuestsWhen I offer the whole house for rent, I will not be around much at all. But I will have my phone on me so you can get in touch. The NeighborhoodDowntown Mosier, close to the school. It is quite safe and quiet at night. I have lived here 6 years and consider the neighborhood to be safe. The train comes through town several times/day. So you might want to bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper or wish to sleep in. Within walking distance are spectacular hiking trails, a school playground, a cute beach on the Columbia, a cold spring swimming hole, u-pick fruit, a pub, quickie mart, cider house, and excellent Mexican take-out. Getting AroundThere is the CAT Gorge bus. You may bike to Hood River (7 miles) and The Dalles (15 miles) on the Scenic Highway 30. Or drive. Or walk. Or float your boat across the Columbia River. Other Things to NotePets are negotiable and must be cleared before renting. I need to know the situation ahead of time, for the sake of my cat mostly. I do have a cool storage space for a dog that is comfortable with a kennel/crate.

The SpaceImagine sipping a lemonade or glass of wine on a large deck overlooking vineyards and orchards at sunset or star gazing at the spectacular night sky! Enjoy your Columbia Gorge vacation in this custom, energy efficient 3,000 square foot home (naturally cool in the summer and warm in the winter). The heated floors, solid wood doors, stone countertops in the gourmet kitchen, wood fireplace, marble showers, venetian plaster and hand-painted armoires will make you feel like you're in an Italian villa with all of the modern conveniences like WiFi and big screen TV in the media room. Everything is here to make your Columbia Gorge Vacation a retreat you'll want to come back to often! This Columbia Gorge vacation home is situated on 10 acres with views of our own small Sangiovese vineyard as well as surrounding vineyards, flower farm, and cherry orchards. You can soak up the views with the floor to ceiling windows in the great room, outside from the large deck or under the big oak tree on the back patio as you grill on the barbecue. There is a seasonal creek that flows through the property and brings a variety of wildlife - elk, deer, bunnies, wild turkeys, to name a few! For the hiker, there are miles of trails surrounding the home. For the wine lover, there are many wineries in the area to visit and taste. For the nature lover, there are many beautiful vistas to feast your eyes. Whether you spend a week or just a weekend, you're sure to go home relaxed and revived! Eco-friendly and special: The focus in building this home was to provide a very private getaway that is energy efficient and uses as many natural and recycled materials as possible. The walls are actually made of recycled Styrofoam and cement formed into very large concrete blocks (Rastra Block) – this gives the house super insulation (R Factor 50 versus the normal 25). Many materials came from Mosier – the ceiling in the great room is reclaimed lumber from the original farm house that was part of a large cherry orchard that encompassed our 10 acres and 100 acres of the surrounding farms and land parcels. The brick on the steps was part of an old church in town. While the kitchen cabinets don’t look recycled (they are custom made Rutt cabinets) - they were bought on Ebay and repainted. The front door is from the Philippines and is made from recycled railroad ties. The armoires in the bedrooms and the powder room are from Thailand – made from recycled wood and iron gates. The coffee table is an old wagon wheel. The water is well water coming from our own well 600 feet below ground – nice and fresh after the volcanic rocks filter it! Other Things to NotePlease note that we have a steep driveway and recommend a 4-wheel drive, especially in the winter.

There is a storage barn and caretaker studio underneath the back side of the house, which is off limits. Interaction with GuestsI am usually here to greet you and answer any questions, and otherwise am easily reachable via text, phone or email The NeighborhoodMosier is a hamlet where nature is close by. From the house you can walk up the road to the local swimming hole, aka pocket park.. Cross the river and climb the trail up onto the Mosier Plateau, with great overviews looking west. Walk to town, by our historic post office and library, and enjoy heirloom cider, beer and craft pizza at the Rack and Cloth (Thurs -Sun) or Union Tap House. Keep walking towards the water front park, where windsurfers and kiters play in the wind when its blowing.. The beach is kid and dog friendly. Keep going up to the historic Twin Tunnels, a bike and pedestrian route all the way to Hood River.. Getting AroundNo parking meters, no traffic lights, just a few stop signs here and there. Other Things to NoteMosier is in the heart of the Columbia River National Scenic Area, which is also a transportation corridor. There are trains on both sides of the river, plus a freeway on the Oregon side.. If the windows are closed, you do not hear sound in a negative way, but outside or with the doors open and depending on wind direction, you can hear the sounds of life going by... There is one "quiet" bedroom if you are sensitive to background sounds...

The NeighborhoodThe City of Mosier is a small community of 430 people on the south bank of the Columbia River an hour east of Portland, Oregon. It has its roots in the fruit orchard industry. There is a small pub called Rack & Cloth on Hwy. 30 that makes hard cider and serves beer, offers tasty pizza, salads and soups made from local farm produce. There is no longer a small market for essentials in Mosier, you will need to drive to Hood River for supplies. Mosier is connected by the pedestrian and bicycles only historic Hwy. 30 to the world famous windsurfing town of Hood River, 7 miles to the West. The Historic Columbia River Highway winds along the Columbia basalt cliffs to outstanding gorge views. In the spring, acres of breathtaking wildflowers blanket the hills. Hiking, biking, and bird watching are favorite recreational activities. Wineries and local orchards are scattered throughout the greater Mosier Valley. Mosier is located in a transitional weather zone between the moist, heavily-forested west side of the Cascades and the drier bunch grass prairies of the arid central Oregon desert region. You might notice this when you look out the windows and see the transition from trees to sagebrush covered hillsides. The climate is also different to Portland, typically Mosier gets 30-45 more sunshine days per year, less rain, and the average temperature is warmer in summer months by 10-15 degrees and colder by the same in winter months. Getting AroundIf you are driving there is easy access to historic Hwy. 30 and to I-84 (exit 69). There is a pedestrian and bicycle route through two historic twin-tunnels along the Columbia River Scenic Highway just west of town. This five-mile route connects Mosier with the City of Hood River. About five-miles east of town on Hwy. 30 is Rowena Crest viewing area. Trailheads are located at both ends of the park and may be reached by following Old Hwy. 30 from either community. Other Things to NoteThe railroad track and I-84 are close by and there is some noise associated with proximity. While there is not active whistle blowing, there may be some vibration from the railroad traffic. To combat the noise there is sound mitigating glazing provided at all windows on the view riverside which is exposed to I-84 and the railroad. Additional sound insulation between units is provided at party walls to reduce noise transference. Lights in ceiling are cool lights and not flood lights. There is Apple TV in the unit.

You will love the views, seclusion, expansive decks, convenient access, and super comfortable design of this Columbia River Gorge house. Situated on a secluded bluff above the Columbia River and town of Mosier, it is 10 minutes from downtown Hood River, 5 minutes from I84, and even closer to the charming and historic Gorge town of Mosier. You can watch wind and kite sailers launching from Rock Creek beach while enjoying coffee or cocktails from the deck, and keep tabs on wind conditions all day. Deer, wild turkeys, osprey, bald eagles, and other wildife are commonly seen from our decks, which make perfect outdoor living and dining areas for long, relaxed summer nights, barbecues, and stunning sunsets above the Hood River bridge and city of White Salmon to the west. What we and our visitors enjoy most, aside from the world class location, is being able to find quiet and seclusion so close to the restaurants, brew pubs, grocery stores, and other necessary amenities of Mosier and Hood River. Its the perfect place to wind down after a day on the water, road, or trail, or to just spend a quiet day with a book, the WiFi, or cable TV and the views as the light changes throughout the day. The design of the house and AC also make it super comfortable during the hot Gorge summers - something to be wary of with other rentals. At 1,650 sq. ft., the house is modest in size, but the nearly 1,000 sq. ft. of decking expands the usable space considerably. Downstairs includes an entryway/mud room/coat hanging area with adjacent, separate laundry room. The living room, dining area, and large kitchen are all open with windows facing the river. Living room has a large couch, loveseat, futon couch, large end table, coffee table, and TV stand/stereo cabinet. The dining table sits 4 and expands to six, while the breakfast bar sits 3. The dining area is adjacent to the deck with a nice, country style screen door. A full bath with shower is also on the first floor. Upstairs are two large bedrooms both with new queen beds, one bedroom off of each side of a large stair landing. A full bath with tub and shower is shared by both bedrooms, each with a private access. High ceilings, large windows, and incredible views make the bedrooms really a pleasure. The master bedroom boasts a large deck off screened French doors that get drenched with morning sun. The decks have a combination of shade or sun anytime of day. The largest shaded area occurs during mid and late day, while the largest sunny areas occur in the morning - a perfect combination. Abundant patio furniture and a picnic table make the decks true extensions of the home's comforts. We love to mountain and road bike and relish the location for both. Access to historic hwy 30 and the Mosier Tunnels makes for great country road biking and access to Hood River, including several loops of varying size. You can also take dirt roads and trails over the ridge to Hood River, ride back through the tunnels, and get a root beer float in Mosier on the way back! Unwind, reboot and recharge here where the spectacular view will take your breath away. Whether enjoying the stunning panoramic Columbia River view from almost every room and the expansive front deck and hot tub, challenging your family and friends to a rousting game of pool or darts, or cooking a delicious meal together in the large open living/dining/kitchen, this is the perfect vacation get-away. A/C, WiFi, music speakers inside and out, grassy backyard with hammock and firepit for roasting s'mores and great conversation. Our home is about 7 minutes to downtown Hood River and 45 minutes to Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Area. Return home to a soak in the hot tub after biking, windsurfing, kiting, hiking or rafting or enjoy the cozy fireplace for your your apres-ski pleasure. Enjoy a glass of wine from the deck and watch the sun set over the Columbia. Direct view of the windsurfing/kiting launch-- know what sail/kite you will rig before you even leave the house! The access to the water is quick and easy. This is a perfect launching pad for wine tasting in the Hood River or in Washington from Bingen to Maryhill. It's a quick and easy drive to downtown Hood River for shopping and restaurants, while still feeling away from it all. Walk or bike to downtown Mosier store, pub, playground and more. Easy access to Mosier Tunnel Trail and Route 30 for biking, and you can hike to a beautiful waterfall and a newly expanded wildflower hike right out the door. This house is very kid and family friendly, and perfect for a large group. Four bedrooms. Upstairs has master with queen bed and en-suite bath. Second bedroom upstairs has a full bed and twin bunk beds. There is a second full bath upstairs. There are two futons that fold out to double beds in the living room. Downstairs has a full bath with shower and a bedroom with queen bunks and another bedroom with a queen bed. There is a futon downstairs as well as the pool table and dart board. We encourage fun but being respectful to our neighbors is top priority. No loud parties allowed. Parking is limited to 4 vehicles. Our home sits on a steep hill which makes for great views but the driveway is very steep. If it's at all icy we advice that you park on the street and walk up. This can be challenging for those without sure footing. We are nearing completion of a guest house on our property in front of our home. It does not obscure the views from the main house and you have full access to the driveway. Photos coming once it's complete. It will be available to rent either in conjunction with the main house or separately (it sleeps up to 6 and is super cozy and nice! Same spectacular views) sometime in 2017.

Looking for a sunny getaway that is only an hour and fifteen minutes from Portland, yet feels like it is miles away in Tuscany instead of on the Columbia River? We have your perfect getaway just five miles from downtown Hood River in the hills of the sleepy town of Mosier. Imagine sipping a lemonade or glass of wine on a large deck overlooking vineyards and orchards at sunset or star gazing at the spectacular night sky! Enjoy your Hood River vacation in this custom, energy efficient 3,000 square foot home (naturally cool in the summer and warm in the winter).
