The SpaceRomantic Getaway. Seeing it is loving it! The Caboose is a handcrafted replica of an old train carriage, with a private garden. Set on a property with a historic farmhouse, only 5 minutes drive from the beach and Takaka township. Great for both summer and winter with a pot belly making it cosy on the colder nights and an outside bath for a romantic soak under the stars. Your stay at the The Caboose in Golden Bay is a special experience that you will remember! Close to Takaka and close to the beach, so perfect as a base for your holiday or as your base to explore the natural wonders Golden Bay has to offer. Or just stay in The Caboose and ... relax! (PS: If you would like to stay one night only contact us. We do approve of one night stays, but do charge $20 extra service fee). Some of the feedback we were given: - Made to feel very welcome. Easy to relax inside and outside the Caboose. Really enjoyed exploring Golden Bay. Nice combination of Art Trail, natural beauty and good food - Great location and excellent accommodation. The Caboose was beautifully presented and had everything we needed. The perfect place to relax - Great spot for a get away and top location to base ourselves from to explore golden bay and up to farewell spit! Really nice place to stay and the outside bath, shower, hammock and dining area was ideal and made it even more special for us! - Thanks so much for the relaxing refuge. Beautifully quiet, would recommend to anyone who needs some time out - The outside bath is awesome. We'll be back :) Truly one of the best accommodations my wife and I have ever spent time in - after 40 years of traveling. A small space but absolutely magical and meticulously detailed. A true labour of love created by someone with a genius level of originality and inspiration. This little wonder is dripping with soul. After leaving and checking into our next night's accommodation after leaving Takaka, we felt an overwhelming sense of loss - realizing our one night stay there hadn't been nearly long enough. - A very unique, relaxing and private get-away! We loved staying in the Caboose with our 2 year old daughter and will happily recommend it to others. The private backyard with outdoor bath and shower were a highlight, and the welcoming eggs and beer a lovely touch. Thank you, I'm sure we will be back! Guest AccessFully self-contained Outside bath Outside shower, roofed and enclosed Composting toilet Interaction with GuestsWelcome. Happy to assist with anything needed, wanted or liked. Just come to back door of the house! The NeighborhoodRural outlook over farmlands but close to beach and lots to explore. Golden Bay is New Zealand's most diverse and appealing holiday destination. Imagine a region with endless variety, where golden beaches, alpine valleys and tranquil fishing rivers share a close proximity with the sea. Breathtaking scenery, arts and crafts, sporting activities. There's something for everyone. Golden Bay is nestled into the South Island's north-west corner. A chain of steep and rugged mountains cuts its fertile river plains and valleys from the rest of the island. Getting AroundPublic transport (Bus) available to and from Nelson and from Takaka to the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Park. Golden Bay air has frequent flights between Takaka and Wellington. Motupipi is 5 minutes driving distance from Takaka and Pohara beach. It is recommended to have a car for your transport. Other Things to NoteThe Caboose is intended as a place to get away from it all. No television or wifi, but comfortable and cosy and hopefully filled with good company!

We live on-site and our office is just across the road, so guests may see us passing by occasionally. We respect our guests' privacy, but would be happy to chat or offer advice and suggestions about the many exciting things to do in and around Golden Bay. The NeighborhoodFramed by three of New Zealand's premiere wilderness regions - Farewell Spit Nature Reserve, scenic Abel Tasman National Park & the vast Kahurangi National Park - with superb weather patterns both summer & winter, and a small, diverse yet friendly population, Golden Bay is a unique, natural enclave. Altogether creating an appealingly remote location, with an easily accessible spirit. Kotare Muse is located in a small, riverside rural-residential area, some 4 minutes drive east of the thriving Takaka township, and halfway towards the bustling Pohara beachside communities. Our small community has views across verdant pastures to the rugged mountains, and we are centrally located for access to all of Golden Bay's numerous natural attractions and walking tracks, plus good cafés and restaurants, supermarket and shops, cinema and an eclectic mix of artists' galleries and workshops. Getting AroundWhilst Golden Bay is diverse in its culture, and there are regular bus services from Nelson and Motueka to Takaka, we are not particularly well served with local public transport options, so travelling in your own vehicle is highly recommended. Driving times: approx 1.75 hours drive from Nelson City, or allow slightly over 1 hour from Motueka to Takaka, then 4 minutes from Takaka to Kotare Muse. Locally we are 5 minutes to Pohara; 9 minutes to Tata Beach; 50 minutes to Totaranui beach and camp; 10 minutes to Waikoropupu Springs; 20 minutes to the infamous Mussel Inn; 25 minutes to Collingwood, and about an hour to Farewell Spit. Motupipi Hill walking and mountain biking tracks are accessible just two minutes from the chalet, and it's just a few minutes drive to the local beaches or river estuary. Boats can be easily launched from several safe locations around the bay, and kayaking/paddle-boarding are popular activities around many local coastlines, estuaries and beaches. Other Things to NoteFor international travellers: Nous parlons français / Hablamos español. In our professional lives, we are accomplished nature photographers and authors, so Kotare Muse features some of the books and photographs from our various worldwide expeditions.
