The SpaceVisitors who come to our home often comment that they feel very relaxed while here. We hope you find that same peace during your stay. Nestled in the woods, our little house feels far from the summer crowds, so when you come home from hiking/biking/swimming/shopping, you will feel "away" from it all. The master bedroom has plenty of room for a travel bed (not provided), so though we say "sleeps 2" we are happy to discuss the number of your group. Guest are renting the original house, which contains the kitchen, full bath, master bedroom, living/dining space and a small reading and computer room. The space is about 900 sq. feet, and has a sweet, open feel. The bedroom's only access is up a small ship's ladder. The house is attached to what was once a wooden boat builder's shop, which has since been renovated for our family's use. The "boat shop" as we call it, is off limits to guests. We will keep our larder on one shelf of the pantry - we ask that you not eat it. We are happy to greet and orient our guests if they'd like, but we do not plan to stay on the property while guests are present. That said, we have extensive gardens and may ask to make arrangements with guests in order to schedule times for us to do watering. Our house is central on MDI, and is nestled on 2.75 wooded acres. Kitteridge Brook Road is a private road, and is very, very quiet. This house is a 10 minute drive from most of MDI's destinations - Acadia National Park's main entrance and Information Center is close by, as are the primary towns of Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor. There is a gas station/convenience store only .5 miles down the road, and a fantastic local country store just a mile in the opposite direction. A number of excellent sandwich shops and bakeries are close by to help you pack the perfect picnic. We have an ample circular driveway, and plenty of parking. Airports: We are about 1 hour from the Bangor International Airport (44 miles), and about 15 minutes from the Bar Harbor Airport (6 miles) The Island Explorer, our island's FREE public bus system, has stops not far from our house - check their website ((website hidden)) for locations and schedules. Acadia can be a crowded place for drivers, so we encourage you to take advantage of this great environmentally-minded island service. The only access to the master bedroom is up a boat ladder - it is strong, and easy to use, but NOT handicapped accessible by any means, and young children should always be supervised when climbing up or down. Additionally, we use natural and organic cleaning products, as well as laundry detergent for the sheets and towels. This house does not have a microwave oven. Separate small bathroom with shower, sink, and toilet. Gorgeous lake views, cathedral ceiling, large private deck built around towering red pines with charcoal BBQ grill and sunsets directly across the lake. Loons and other wildlife abound. Swimming, hiking, biking, coastline, canoeing, sailing, off-shore boating, small townships, and lobsters within minutes from the camp. Free roadside parking area (please park away from neighbor's garage). *To do the National Park activities, you will need a Park Pass (buy online or at the Bar Harbor Park Headquarters or Sea Wall Campground) to use or park at any National Park trail heads. You do not need a pass to park at the Camp. Interaction with GuestsOpen communication via email before the visit and on-call if you need anything. The host is not on site (we live out of state). Please note with Peace and Love, that this is a rustic setting with a camping feel and small footprint philosophy in Acadia National Park, it is "bring your own linens". Please pack out what you pack in and leave the place as you find it ("please leave no trace"). Please clean out anything you brought and pack out any left-over garbage due to the wild location and potential for animals getting into the garbage. With Peace and Love, Peace and Love. The NeighborhoodOn a pristine deep fresh water lake (the park does not allow speed boats or jet skis), among the trees, bordering Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, which is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Neighbors include Loons, Ducks, Turtles, Fish, Squirrels and a very nice human couple to the north. Located on the road south to Southwest Harbor. Also close to Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor, and Bass Harbor. All quaint little fishing and lobstering villages. No high speed boats or jet skis are allowed on the lake so it is very nice and the deck very private. You are within earshot of the road. Getting AroundBike, Hike, Swim, Canoe, Kayak, Taxi, Rent-a-Car, or Drive own car. In the summer months there is a free shuttle "The Island Explorer" that goes everywhere on the island and will stop at the Camp if you wave it down. Different routes go to Bar Harbor, through the Park, and to the Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton. It also has a bike carrier. Check the summer schedule to/from Southwest Harbor. Other Things to NoteThe camp is located on Mount Desert Island in Maine, accessed by a year-round bridge and road to the island. Taking a ferry is NOT required to get to the island. You can also fly to Portland, Bangor, or Bar Harbor Airports and rent cars from there.

The SpaceRALOCASTLE, as our cabin is called, was built by my grandfather and has been lovingly maintained by our family for four generations. A true, uninsulated summer cabin, Ralocastle is available from early summer through early fall. This is camp with all of the comforts of home. There are two bedrooms, one with a queen bed, the other with two twins. The futon couch in the living room can be turned into a comfortable full-size bed for two. Additionally, a futon chair converts to sleep one. All bed, bath and kitchen linens are provided (including 10 bed pillows). There is a furnace and a fireplace (firewood provided) to stay cozy on cool days. For your convenience, there is a fully equipped kitchen, on site access to a washer and dryer, and a bathroom with shower. A screened-in porch serves as both "mud room" and a nice spot for outdoor dining on buggy days. There are plenty of chairs lining the open air porch facing the lake view, perfect for enjoying your morning coffee and a good book. Enjoy our eclectic library (something for everyone - including a selection of children's books) and our collection of games and jigsaw puzzles. Our dock is just steps from the cabin. Use it for swimming (ladder access provided into water), boating, and greeting the waterfowl who come to visit. Three watercraft - a canoe, an aluminum rowboat and a two-person kayak - are provided for our guests to enjoy on the pond which is the largest body of fresh water on the island. The spectacular Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island and has something for everyone - beautiful drives, hiking and biking for all abilities, miles of rocky shoreline, and breathtaking views. All points of entry to this national treasure are within a 30 minute drive of the cabin. That said, we enjoy being on "the quiet side" of the island! Guest AccessA comprehensive camp manual is emailed in pdf form to each confirmed guest, and a hard copy of this manual is in the cabin. The manual includes everything you need to know about our cabin and what it has to offer you as well as lots of information on ways to enjoy the island and Acadia. There are also a number of books and trail maps at the cabin for you to use to plan your outings. Interaction with GuestsWe love our Airbnb guests! Lesli is more than happy to answer any questions you may have about Ralocastle, Acadia and Mount Desert Island. Send her a message here. She lives in Colorado but is always available to guests by phone, text and email. The NeighborhoodThe cabin is located at the southern tip of Northern Neck, a peninsula extending approximately a mile into Long Pond. A private road provides access to the camps and homes on Northern Neck (a favorite form of exercise is walking this beautiful lane). Our cabin is well off the road down an extended drive. The southern and western shoreline of Long Pond are part of Acadia National Park. We have wonderful neighbors. The cabin to the west is in full view of us, but these folks are not local so are around only intermittently. They are very quiet and neighborly. The folks to the east are local and spend their summer on the pond - lovely people. They are further away and we cannot see their house from our cabin. Our open porch and dock/swimming cove are completely private (except from the view of whomever is paddling by!). Getting AroundThere is a private circular parking area at the foot of our drive, including lighting for night arrivals. On Mount Desert Island, there is an exceptional form of free public transportation from to June through mid-October sponsored by LL Bean called The Island Explorer - a bus line with many originations, destinations and departure times. This is a wonderful way to experience many aspects of Acadia without adding to traffic. Other Things to NoteAgain, we love our airbnb guests!

In the lease my terms for cancellation are different than Airbnb. My contract/lease states that you are responsible for the full amount of your stay. Any refund is dependent on our ability to re-rent the cabin, less a $100 cancellation fee. Cancellations affect us significantly, because of our small size. Although we understand emergencies happen, last minute cancellations often do not allow us time to re-rent the cabin. I recommend to my guests to get trip insurance, it will help give you piece of mind in the case something unexpected arises. A site (URL HIDDEN) is worth checking out…It presents many companies, gives you quick quotes, and is very reasonable. There is a $100.00 pet fee for those guests bringing a dog. The historic Isaac Somes house in the heart of Somesville is the quintessential summer home on Mount Desert Island. The Isaac Somes house is generally thought to be the oldest existing structure in the village and has remained in the Somes family since it was built in 1828. It is flanked on the south side by a one-story ell and on the north by a Colonial Revival porch. It has been modernized over the years and is quite comfortable for today's guests. The house will accommodate 12 people with 6 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. There is one king, four queens, one double and one cot for a small child. The gracious living room has a lovely fireplace and the screened in porch is loaded with lovely wicker furniture so you can spend your time reading or just enjoying the views of Somes Pond and the meadow outside. One canoe and two kayaks plus life preservers complete your stay. **Nightly Rates Not Available. 7 day minimum.** Additional amenities include: coffee maker, iron/board, lobster forks/crackers, dish towels/cloths, corkscrew/bottle opener, food processor, grill or outdoor fireplace, hammock, sheets, vacuum, outdoor furniture, blankets, lobster pot.
