The SpaceWe called it “The Big Apple” because when we left New York City for Oregon (once upon a very long time ago) we felt we’d really made it. We had achieved the dream, we'd arrived! A fertile fruit growing area, Hood River County is also known as a year round mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Its north border is the scenic Columbia River Gorge, summer fun site for world class wind surfing, kite boarding, kayaking, rafting, stand-up paddle boarding, sailing, and fishing. The southern border encompasses Mount Hood where winter fun in the snow includes x-country, down hill, alpine and back country skiing, snowboarding, and snow shoeing. All season fun includes road and mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, micro brews and wine tasting, the springtime fruit Blossom Fest and autumn Harvest Fest. Our "Big Apple" small family farm is located in the middle of this beautiful valley, twenty minutes uphill from downtown and thirty minutes downhill from the closest of Mount Hood’s several ski slopes. Hidden away among towering trees, the storybook farmhouse offers the comforts of home - a separate entrance to the cozy "Iris room" for two, a full bed featuring feather bed and down quilt, and a private bath with clawfoot tub/shower. The 9am breakfast features our own fresh eggs and home baked treats. Come home to the farm, meet the critters, try “woofing” in the garden without having to rough it. Feel the magic of this gentle land overlooked by the volcanic power of Mount Hood. Sample country living in style The Big Apple way. Guest AccessYou are invited to roam the gardens and interact with the critters. Interaction with GuestsI'm usually home and can introduce you to the animal members of the family, and answer questions about the gardens. The NeighborhoodPicturesque family farm surrounded by hills, trees and orchards. Other Things to NoteDepending on the season, you may be able to go home with produce or plant starts.

Interaction with GuestsWe are not always at the main house. But you can contact us if you have issues. The NeighborhoodYou are right in the middle of the Hood River Fruit Loop. Here are some of our favorite spots: Draper Girls Country Farm- 3.5 miles south on Hwy 35 This farm stand has lots of fresh produce plus fresh lamb and jams. They have pygmy goats that you can feed. There is also a giant tree swing with Mt. Hood in the background. Many family portraits have been taken on this swing. Packers Orchards and Bakery - 1.5 miles north on Hwy 35 You can get fresh fruit, jams, ice cream, pies and cookies here. Gorge White House - 5.5 miles north on Hwy 35 This is a favorite stop for us. On weekends from April to November, there is a food truck open. It's run by a Cordon Blue chef and has some of the best local goods. There is a u-pick flower and fruit farm. They do wine tasting in the house and cider tasting in the shed out back. Pine Grove Pit Stop - 5 miles north on Hwy 35 They always have the cheapest gas in the area. And they have Juanita's famous tortilla chips (plus some specialty Juanita's flavors that you can get elsewhere) and Vernonica's fresh salsa. Hood Winery - 5 miles north on hwy 35 (2882 Van Horn Dr.) This gorgeous building has tastings inside and out with an amazing view and some good wines. You can get a 6 flight tasting for $10. McIsaccs General Store 4990 Baseline Dr. Parkdale, Or (6.5 miles south) Our favorite grocery store plus hardware and farm supplies. Apple Valley BBQ 4956 Baseline Dr, Parkdale (6.5 miles south) The best BBQ in the area. Celilo - 16 Oak St, Hood River (downtown Hood River) This is a modern high-end restaurant with an amazing chef and pastry chef. It's my favorite place for a special night out. 3 Rivers Grill 601 Oak St, Hood River (downtown Hood River) This is also a higher end restaurant. Get a window or patio table and enjoy sweeping views of the gorge. They also have a great happy hour. Other Things to NoteA note on staying during the winter - It snows at the guesthouse a few times a year. If light snow is forecast, a 4WD vehicle with snow traction tires is necessary. Check road reports as well as chains are often required on Highway 35 and Endow Dr. if conditions are bad. If it snows heavily, our dirt road isn't always plowed. You will be able to drive down to the house, but most vehicles, including 4WD vehicles won't make it back up the hill to the highway without chains and snow tires. If you are not positive that your vehicle is up to the challenge, we recommend parking your car at the mailbox pull-off area right at HWY 35. That's where we park when it snows. It's a 10-minute walk down to the house from the road. HWY 35 is plowed, sanded and well travelled.

The SpaceThe rental space is a self contained set of rooms above our garage. It includes a standard sized bedroom with a full sized bed, a nice living room area, and dedicated full bathroom. Guest AccessWe are off a major highway and up a 1/2mi. gravel road. Two paved parking spots available, on the right side of our driveway. Additional parking or storage can be available with arrangements. Access is via a full flight of stairs only, but it is a private entrance from the parking area. We can get a lot of snow in a short time during the winter. I will make all attempts to keep the driveway passable for all cars, but combining that and the hilly terrain, a 4WD or AWD vehicle may be necessary at times in this region. Interaction with GuestsI love meeting our guests. I am very open to assist in suggesting food, entertainment, and activity locations/ideas. We are ALWAYS available if you have a need or an emergency. The NeighborhoodWe are zoned Rural Residential and all the lots in the area are 2.5 acres minimum. Lots of farmland; hay, cows, horses,... and their associated noises/smells. Peaceful and remote but with easy access to activities. One acre of our lot is a pasture surrounded by electric fence for our beef cow. All is open to the guests, with respect. Getting AroundThere are local cabs that service us from Hood River. Many road bikes travel Hwy 35, but to get to our place is mostly by automobile. Other Things to NoteFrom our house, it is 12 miles (~18 min.) to get into Hood River and 31 miles (~36 min.) to get into Government Camp. (base of Mt. Hood)

There are also many hiking trailheads, lakes, fishing, skiing at Cooper Spur or Mt Hood Meadows & Timberline just a short drive away. We have been coming here for decades and are happy to offer our guidance on things to do around. A 5 minute drive (2 miles) will bring you to Parkdale, where you'll find • Solera Brewery • McIsaacs grocery store (GREAT selection) • Apple Valley BBQ Or a few mins down Hwy 35 to • Saw Tooth Roadhouse (pizza, pub and family fare) • Draper Girls farm stand • Aubert Fruit Co farm stand • City of Odell You're also directly on the famous Fruit Loop of Hood River Valley! We are minutes from lovely farms like Draper Girls, Streichs Orchards, Lavender Valley, and Aubert Fruit Co. Take advantage of these during May-November, and treat yourself to some of the best orchards on the West coast. Getting AroundYou'll want to drive in to stay, we're 13 miles up Hwy 35 from Hood River (15 minutes closer to the mountain). From there, there is plenty within biking distance, but most of our guests use the house as a home base, and drive around the mountain/valley. Other Things to NoteBicycles and ski equipment can be stored in the sun room, just ask us. No pets or children under 12, sorry! We are working on accommodating children and small dogs, but the space isn't ready for that yet and we value your safety / comfort, as well as pet allergies.
