The SpaceWe built our beautiful dream house--and then I got a job in California! Barnlike on the outside, inside our place is sleek and modern and built for a relaxed, elegant, grownup life. We like to cook and eat with friends, tramp through the woods to the dock and dive into our pond, watch the sunrise through the trees, sit outside under the stars at night, and curl up with a good book in the afternoon in one of our two hammocks. Two queen beds, one double, and a convertible single in the office, plus 3.5 baths mean there's plenty of room and privacy. Front porch gets sun in the morning, back patio in the afternoon, and the dock and utterly private pond are beautiful in every season. Guest AccessGuests have access to the entire house, the front porches and outdoor patio, and the private trail to our dock and pristine swimming pond. Interaction with GuestsWe live in California so leave keys in a lockbox on the side of the house. Our housekeeper will be available by phone for any questions, and we will communicate with you by text or email before your visit and make sure you are checked in and all is well. The NeighborhoodSalisbury is a beautiful colonial town with one main street, a well-stocked grocery (LaBonne's), several very good restaurants (The White Hart in Salisbury, The Woodland in Lakeville, Serevan in Amenia, No. 9 in Millerton), a beautiful historic library, and numerous outdoor attractions, from the Town Grove (swimming in summer) to hiking on the Appalachian Trail (trailheads just down the road). In Sharon (15 minutes), several farms host pick-your-own apple weekends, and Lime Rock racetrack has frequent events including antique car shows. Great Barrington (shopping, concerts, movies) is 25 minutes, Millerton about 15 (good movie theater and restaurants), Catamount ski area is 20 minutes, and Hudson's antiques and art galleries and great food are 35 minutes away. We have a list of favorite hikes if you're interested. Getting AroundYou'll need a car, though guests could take a train from Grand Central to Wassaic (35 minutes away). Other Things to NoteGiven the stairs, low windows, and valuable rugs and furnishings, the house is probably not suitable for very young children. Our road is gravel and plowed in winter. We have a whole-house generator, which means you don't have to worry about losing power in a storm. We have Frontier wi-fi, cable TV, plus Blu-Ray with Netflix and Amazon Prime access. The master bedroom does not have shades on the windows. If you're bothered by moonlight, you might bring a sleeping mask. (There is usually one in the bedside table drawer.) Some history: The 23 acre property was the site of a Revolutionary War-era iron quarry (which is why we have a deep pond in the woods). You'll note cylindrical holes just off the path that were used to make charcoal to smelt the ore.

This rambling farmhouse has a balanced mix of meticulous restoration with an eccentric flair. Undermountain Farm is a home carefully designed with warmth and spirit. It also has a unique collection of fascinating antiques and collectibles. Enjoy cooking in the state-of-the-art kitchen with your only dilemma being where to eat. You might choose the solarium, surrounded by exotic plants and the sun streaming through the glass; or the patio where you might hear the roar of the waterfall which tumbles down the mountain behind the house after a rainfall, or you could try the formal dining room which still has the original Dutch oven from the 18th century. The veranda is a good choice where you can watch the highland cattle in the meadows. Or you may choose the informal dining area and eat in the luminous kitchen delicately accented with orchids. The hand-crafted cabinetry in the kitchen was all made from one maple tree.We recently had a large dinner party for forty people in the breakfast sitting room after we removed the couch and chairs.Tis was the very max I would like to say .With all the downstairs rooms we were able to have hor dourves in the dinning room , a bar in the green house and dancing complete with a disco ball in the stable This farmhouse has many rooms to enjoy. If you like a large space, then the former stables might suit you. This room, with its high vaulted ceilings and original beams boasts a magnificent stone fireplace, and huge windows that offer a pastoral view of the surrounding meadows. If you prefer a cosy room, then the den is ideal. The antique wood paneling, the big comfy leather chairs and the soothing, ambient feeling will make you want to curl up with a good book in front of the wood stove and forget about the outside world. You might choose the formal living room or the informal living area adjoining the kitchen for a friendly gathering place. This home has six fireplaces and two wood stoves to keep you warm, and there’s also a fire cauldron and grill on the patio. If you’re staying with friends, you might have to draw straws for the huge master bedroom, where the rising sun illuminates the artfully plastered walls creating a deep orange, radiant light in the morning. The added bonus in the master bathroom with the shower and its floor of river stones and the jacuzzi where you can gaze over the meadows. Those who drew the shorter straws will be happy in the other three bedrooms which have lovely outlooks over the Berkshire Hills and offer a quiet respite for a restful sleep; including the soothing sounds of a seasonal babbling brook. Upstairs two bedrooms with a shared bathroom. Master bedroom with a dressing room, shower and jacuzzi from where you can watch the cows! Six fireplaces and two wood stoves. Fire cauldron and grill on the patio. Four bedrooms with queen beds, several other bedding options, two fold out sofas, futons and an air mattress.
