The SpacePeople love renting our cabin because it is minutes away from trails, waterfalls, and trout fishing. The cabin is directly on the water, is shady, and has a nice large sunny dock to hang out on. Guest AccessYou will have full run of the cabin, inside and out. PLEASE be sincere when responding with your guest count. When my neighbors comment that they met six folks while swimming when payment was made for two, that is not fair for anyone. Interaction with GuestsI live aprox. two hours away, but I am always available by cell phone or by text. I am very responsive and love to answer questions. The NeighborhoodThe cabin is on a small lake with only about 90 other homes. It has very little boat traffic, and on some days you might only witness 2 or three boats total! Getting AroundThis location is only reached by car. No local bus or train. Other Things to NoteDisclosures: No dishwasher, no cable or dish, and no telephone line. We are currently working on the living room which involves the ceiling and chimney area. In the winter months, the cabin can be VERY cold and you might not get above an inside temp of 55. Verizon receives the best signal in the area, but comes and goes. If you are a two day renter, your trash and recyclables may be left at the cabin for us to take care of. For longer stays, you may take the trash and recyclables to the county trash center at 107 Tunnel Town Road, Mountain Rest, SC. It's located across from the boiled peanut stand, and is open 7 am to 7 pm every day except Sun and Wed.

The SpaceBuilt in 1835, Whetstone Place is an incredible example of a classically restored southern dogtrot farmhouse. The floors, walls, and ceilings are still the original hand-planed heart pine - unlike many homes of this age, the floorplan of the house has only been minimally altered (addition of 1.5 baths) over the years. The wide front porch and 2 acre yard are great places for guests to gather and relax under the shady, centuries old trees. Come and experience 19th century farm house living coupled with modern conveniences such as indoor plumbing (!), a well-equipped kitchen, central heat and air in the living areas downstairs and ceiling fans and two portable A/C units in upstairs bedrooms that circulate the cool valley breeze and make Whetstone Place a unique, heart-warming, historically rich destination! Guest AccessThe big yard with comfortable seating and a charcoal grill is available to guests, and the circle driveway is designated to guest parking. A kitchen is available for guest use, and a wide farm table is the centerpiece of an adjoining dining room. Let your culinary creativity soar while staying with us! Plenty of inside space to curl up, read and relax abounds throughout the house, and the cattle of Whetstone Valley Farm in adjoining pastures complete the pastoral scene. Interaction with GuestsWe are on site to help or answer any questions you may have during your stay, but will also respect your privacy. Proprietors Will and Katherine reside in the hand-hewn log cabin directly behind the house. The NeighborhoodWhetstone Place is nestled in Whetstone Valley, just a few miles from Earls Ford on the Chattooga River which provides many choices for excellent outdoor recreation. Nantahala Outdoor Center, Southeastern Expeditions, and Wildwater Rafting are three outfitters close by that provide river rafting adventures; Wildwater also offers zipline canopy tours. Cashiers & Highlands, NC; Clayton, GA, and Clemson, SC are all 30-45 minutes from Historic Whetstone Place. The Atlanta airport is approximately 2.5 hours away, and Greenville-Spartanburg Airport is approximately 1.5 hours from the house. Forest Service horseback trails are located nearby, and we have room at the barn for a horse trailer or two, plus a small pasture for the horses; please ask us about this affordable option! Of course, excellent fly fishing abounds on the Chattooga and Chauga Rivers that are minutes away. Getting AroundWe are far from public transportation, so a vehicle will be necessary. Other Things to NoteAs with many mountainous, rural settings, cell phone service is at times sketchy. A nearby Verizon tower emits an LTE signal, so generally Verizone smartphones that work with this type of technology can make calls and/or use texting. No wireless is provided, but if you use your smart phone for a Verizon hotspot, you may have Internet access. Wireless is available at the Mtn. Rest Community Club, which is about 6 miles from the house in case of emergency. There are several churches in the area for Sunday morning worship. For lunch, Mountain Lake Grill, in Mountain Rest, is about a 4 mile drive; Humble Pie Pizza and Chattooga Belle's Bistro - in Long Creek (Hwy. 76) - are about a 15-20 minute drive from the house; a Dollar General is on Hwy. 28, and is about 10 minutes from the house; Ingles Supermarket is in West Union, and is about a 20 minute drive. Oconee State Park is located on Hwy. 107, and visitors to Whetstone Place can drive there for swimming and putt putt, as well as paddle boats and hiking, in about 15 minutes. Finally, Stumphouse Tunnel (Hwy. 28) is approximately 15 minutes from the house and is a neat place to visit for area history.

The SpaceThe suite is comfortable with a bar and kitchenette, no stove but a nice microwave, full size refrigerator and an outside gas grill is available for use. The king size bed is new and comfortable and the new HVAC unit keeps it all cool! This area is not well served by cell phone service, sometimes a blessing, a hard line is available and slow Wi-Fi is too! Guest AccessThe guest suite is in the lower level with a private entrance and patio. The yard is lush with ferns and other native plantings and has a nice walkway down to the lake. There is a dock with a small skiff and electric motor, very stable, for your use. Also, a single sit on kayak is available. The lake is great for swimming! Interaction with GuestsI am available for help most days on weekends and afternoons. I can show you around and also give you privacy. The NeighborhoodThis is a quite and private lake 65 acres with limited use and very few residents that are here full time. The entire area is quite and wooded with good access to Hwy 28, it is a gravel road, well maintained by the county, but can be dusty, so take your time, slow down and enjoy! My home is on the back side of the lake which is even more remote! Getting AroundThe location allows great access to NC Highlands and Cashiers, about 20 miles away. Hwy 11, 12 miles south at Walhalla, leads to I-85, 2.5 hours from Atlanta. Also, Clemson University is about 20 miles away. Other Things to NoteThere is an Ingles grocery store in Walhalla, about 12 miles away, with a full deli. If you like, I offer a concierge service that can pick up and stock the frig with your selections.

Your outdoor opportunities are endless from your comfy and cozy 2 bedroom 1 bath cottage on the upcountry's most quiet and secluded lake. Relax to the sounds of frogs and whippoorwills at night, explore and fish the lake with the included Jon boat, swim or float or hike around the lake or to the many nearby waterfalls or on the extensive Foothills trail system. The property has a large level lot with great lake access for wading, fishing, or just sitting around enjoying the scenery. There is a fire pit and gentle off-shore breezes are almost a certainty in the evenings to make having a small fire while listening to the surrounding nature one of the highlights of your trip. While the home has plenty of room for larger groups, we prefer to limit guests to 4 total to maintain and respect the peacefulness of the lake and surroundings. This property is not intended for those who wish to party or have many guests visiting but rather for small families or couples who wish to spend some quality time together and reconnect with each other and nature. While the cabin is all about relaxing and unplugging, we regrettably offer satellite TV and wireless internet access because for some it is a necessity but avoiding these modern-day trappings is highly recommended to maximize your experience. Cell phones will not work around the lake or in the immediate area. The lake and property are located in the northern-most tip of South Carolina in the 'town' of Mountain Rest just a couple miles from the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River, one of only seven US rivers to have this designation and made famous in the movie 'Deliverance'. What makes this area so unique is the fact that it is mostly undiscovered, devoid of traffic or stress, and known only to locals yet offers more outdoor activities and unspoiled nature than any of the more famous nearby vacation destinations. The cabin and lake alone would be enough to keep many occupied and satisfied but within 15 minute drive from the lake are enough trails, waterfalls and river access points to keep one busy for an entire summer; within less than hour are the quaint towns of Cashiers and Highlands NC and Clayton Georgia. Within 2 hours are Asheville NC, Pisgah and Smoky mountain National parks.
