Here are some great reviews from our past guests to Paani Ranch! 9/11/2013 Amazing, awesome and a must do!!!! Get in touch with your inner redneck and be sure to meet Doug!!!!! “Very accommodating and lots of fun!” 4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2012 We did the ziplining here with our 2 children aged 8 and 11. We were under some time pressure on the day and could only do it in the morning. Pa'ani were very accommodating and put us on the 9am ziplining tour (despite the fact that we only booked the afternoon before). We arrived early (at about 8.30am) and they offered to start right away, which we did. The other people who were booked on the 9am tour had not arrived yet (which was fair enough) but this did not prevent us from starting early. I don't believe that this impacted on the others either. The ziplining staff were friendly, helpful and reassuring. They were also very professional and good at dealing with children. I was not concerned for my or others safety at any stage. There were 7 ziplines, the last 3 of which were tandem. These were very well suited to children in the 8 - 12 year range. Sure, they are not 100s of feet off the ground (thank goodness!), but they still provide quite a rush for the kids as well as for adults who are not seeking the ultra-extreme. I would definitely recommend Pa'ani for families. 10/12/13 This review is for the Horseback Riding Tour only. 5 people--3 adults and 2 children, ages 8 and 10--took 5 horses out on a sprawling ranch with lovely views and lots of animals. Our guide, Simon, was very friendly and knowledgeable. He matched the horses to the riders. He taught us how to control their horse with the proper commands and reins' signals. The 2 hour tour was slow and relaxing at times, had great picture opportunities, and we were able to gallop the horses if we wanted up hills and through mud! There were barrel courses set up and wild berries and orchids that we were able to pick. Simon overall was patient and kind, and the ranch owners were wonderful. In addition to the tour, they offered clean facilities, and snacks and drinks were served after the ride which consisted of rainbow sherbet, chips and soft drinks. We were staying in the Kopoho Beach Community, and the drive was about 40 minutes. We definitely recommend this ranch, and would love to return. (My mom had such a blast that she offered that the ranch owners call and stay at her house the next time they visit the SF Bay Area!) **Important notes: 1. Kids 8+ only are able to ride horses. 2. Wear pants! 3. Bring a jacket/windbreaker. It rains unexpectedly! 4. Remember to Tip! :-) FUN FACT: Pa'ani means PLAY! 7/14/12 ZIPLINES!!!!!!!! The most fun I have ever had on Ziplines! So many to choose from and you can race people too. Great for beginners and people scared of heights. None of them get too high off the ground. The also have horseback riding and ATV tours throughout the 220 acre ranch. Great views, very photogenic, super friendly staff, and a petting zoo for the kids complete with wagon rides and fishing. Smoking volcano, Mauna Kea, and the ocean are just some of the views. You can eat the delicious wild fruit right off the trees. “Perfect Blend of adventure and friendliness” 5 of 5 starsReviewed July 29, 2011 We took a horse trailride at Pa'ani Ranch as a highlight of our trip to the big island. We had a wonderful time on a real working ranch that also has numerous long ziplines and ATV tours. We didn't zip or do the ATVs, but the friendliness, cleanliness and order would make us pick them for those activities in a minute. We were led by Hope and Brandi, two very competent Wahine Paniolos (cowgirls) who have a real passion for their jobs and were very friendly and knowledgeable. The owner and other employees were equally friendly. All very welcoming. We've ridden horses in many states of the US and this is one of the best settings, with a menagerie of animals to see- llama, wild boar pigs, cows, miniature bulls, miniature horses, and goats. We took my 8 year-old granddaughter and she absolutely had the best time of her vacation. It's an affordable 1.5 hour ride on horses that are calm and compliant (although if you want to run, better to take one of the rides early in the day). “Awesome experience provided by caring staff” 5 of 5 starsReviewed June 23, 2011 Celebrated our son's 3-year-old birthday at Pa`ani Ranch. I bought the Lil Wrangler package. Awesome day! Fishing, petting zoo (llama, goats, rabbits, donkeys, sheep), horseback ride, wagon ride, and barrel ride. They also had a venue for us to have our party. The staff was really friendly and made sure we had a great experience. I HIGHLY recommend this place. They also have ATV rides and zip lines for the adults. 6/7/10 Amazing ATV experience!!! Friendly staff, great tour guide (James), and an experience you can't get anywhere else. It's on a 220 acre of land with horses, cows, lamas, goats, etc. They give you a chance to interact with the animals even did a little fishing. Great fun at a great value. Check them out! They also have Zipline as well. Interaction with GuestsHomeowners live and run the ranch, and are available if you should need anything!

There was real ground Kona coffee, Coffee-mate powder, sugar, hot cocoa, diet soda, tea bags, paper plates & napkins. Full kitchen with dishes, utensils, cookware, salt & pepper. If you're staying for awhile, there is a fairly new gas grill and Styrofoam coolers for your use during your stay. Beautiful flowers (especially anthurium) & fruit trees outside. We stayed only 1 night to see the volcano at night. But it would be a great place to spend some time and get away from the city or resort. It is a great place to stay for exploring Hawaii Volcano National Park which is a 20-30 min drive. When we visited 7-17-13, we enjoyed a cool night (down into the upper 50's or low 60's), but warmed up quickly during the day. There are extra blankets, but we did not need them. It rained a lot in the afternoon & night (which is why it is so green), but rain cleared during the day when we were there mid-July. You will be on the second floor during your stay. It is a duplex with a private separate entrance. The stairway is covered and is well lit. Large airy, covered, lanai (patio) deck on the 2nd floor. There are 2 bedrooms, one with a queen, and one with 2 double beds. All beds have comforters and are firm but comfy. We had 5 people in our party, me, husband, son (12), daughter (9), and my mom. There was room for us all. ” “This is a beautiful 2 bedroom 1 bath upstairs with a full kitchen, huge living room, large dining area and awesome wrap around porch all facing an amazing tropical rain forest. The grounds are immaculate with beautiful tropical flowers and trees. A separate outdoor staircase entrance allows for complete privacy. Tom and Angela are amazing on-site owners that take care of every need that could arise. They have tons of great ideas for excursions, if desired. You are only 10 minutes from the Volcanoes National Park.” I really enjoy the peace and quiet here.I love the cool temperature in the light rains, very enjoyable. The vacation rental is ideal location, beautiful surroundings and view with nature. The home in very spacious and relaxing.Thomas and Angela are wonderful warm intensive to your needs. I will recommend this home for a place to stay to all my friends.I came here to look at properties and can't wait to come back. After spending a short time here has helped me to decide to purchase property in this area in to build a home. you are in the country but close to any need you may have. The SpaceThe cottage is located outside of the tourist areas in a rural residential farm area. We're conveniently located halfway between Hilo airport and Volcano National Park. Endemic Hawaiian Ohia trees are abundant and wisps of fragrant Hawaiian flowers scent the air. The cottage has all the modern comforts for your stay, except for a television. There's high speed wi-fi, Sony stereo with bluetooth, board games, books, and even boogie boards and cooler for your day adventures. Beautifully decorated, the cottage has been outfitted to be as green as we can, with ceramic pots and pans instead of teflon, sulfate-free shampoo, natural soaps, organic sheets, non-chemical cleaning products, organic coffee, anywhere we could reduce your chemical exposure within our means we did. The guest cottage is at the front of the property, with our family home and homestead farm on the back acreage. We raise chickens and sheep for our family. Guests are welcome to make arrangements with us to visit and pet the animals too. Guest AccessUse our driving directions! Don't use your phone's map or gps system as it will take you to unpaved back roads. Its very easy to find the cottage if you follow our driving directions: The cottage is located at the front of the property with the key kept in the lock box on the side door. There is a raised porch, and thus some stairs to get into the house (there are 6 steps to get to the top of the porch). Its a gravel/cinder driveway, so comfortable walking shoes or slippers work fine! Interaction with GuestsThe vacation cottage is on our 3 acre property and we live on the property in the main house. We respect your privacy and let you determine the level of interaction with us. If you'd like to visit us and our farm, just let us know. This is your vacation! The NeighborhoodWe're in a rural area with farms and ranches as neighbors. As we're very rural, there are no street lights on our street so its easy to get a great nights sleep in a dark dark bedroom! We have 1 gas station, a convenience store, a post office and a bakery in our town. A small cafe called Honi Wai Cafe recently opened on the main road near us. We're centrally located between Hilo, Volcano National Park, and another destination point called Kalapana. Getting AroundThe best way to get around is to rent a car when you arrive at the airport. The county bus service is very limited, with the closest bus stop a mile away. Other Things to NoteThe cottage is equipped with high-speed internet and wi-fi for your convenience. There is a blue-tooth CD stereo, board games and a small reading library. There is no television or landline phone in the cottage. The kitchen is fully equipped with plates, pots, pans, salt, oil, utensils, etc. There's a stove, oven and microwave for cooking. Because there's no nearby grocery store, we stock the home with basic groceries, such as steak and pizza in the freezer, along with other basic cooking ingredients to make simple meals. See our food list for more information on this. There are some complimentary items such as coffee, tea, and condiments, for the other items you're only charged for what you use. We are on water catchment, which means we catch the rain water that's supplied to the house. However, for drinking water we supply a complimentary 5-gallon water station. We also stock individual water bottles you may purchase as you use for when you're on the go. Coqui frogs are found throughout the Big Island. They sing at night. They serenade us to sleep, but some people might be bothered by them. If you find you don't like their singing, turning on soft music helps drown them out.

Sitting at a cool 2400' elevation, where nights can get down to the 50s and warming up to the comfortable low 80s during the days, Kealohapau'ole is ideally located 20 minutes away (17 miles) from Hilo town and 20 minutes away (16 miles) from the world renowned Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Only about 5 minutes off the main highway, Kealohapau'ole is beautifully located on the front of a ¼ acre of land, in a small subdivision. Nestled within a ohia and waivi forest, Kealohapau'ole has a large inviting covered deck (over 300 sf!) overlooking a huge back yard and forest views. Watch the adjacent forest for native Hawks during the day. In the evening, enjoy the uncountable amount of stars and cool clear nights. Kealohapau'ole has everything you would need for a comfortable vacation in the mountain side. From a cup of fresh brewed Kona coffee on the covered deck, to reading a book about Hawaii while dressed warmly in the comfortable bathrobes provided, Kealohapau'ole has an experience waiting for you. The fully equipped kitchen has a range/oven, fridge/freezer, all pots, pans, and serving dishes. Even a coffee maker and toaster are provided. The living room is fully furnished with a flat screen TV (with satellite programming), and a comfortable sofa. Vaulted ceilings with a ceiling fan make this room very large and inviting. Wifi is broadcast throughout the residence. The master bedroom hosts a king size bed, with double end tables and lamps. With a beautiful view thru the french doors, you can even access the rear covered deck directly from the bedroom. Kealohapau'ole features a well designed bathroom. A jacuzzi tub is available after those long walks in the National Park. A 2 person walk-in shower is very spacious. Even a make-up counter was installed to make preparations for your special night out even easier. Kealohapau'ole is very committed to promoting the Island's many products and services. When available, we at Kealohapau'ole try to provide locally harvested products. Every guest will enjoy fresh flower arrangements, purchased from local farmers and their families. Fresh fruit awaiting your arrival is hand picked by us the morning of your arrival, available from the many local farmers markets. Kealohapau'ole even provides sample Kona coffee blends. As our list continues to expand, we hope you find the local products very exciting. If you are looking for a place to detach from the rush of normal life, or if you are looking for a convenient location on your vacation that is central to many fine activities, Kealohapau'ole would be a great pick. Thank you for joining us on your vacation needs! Guest AccessKealohapau'ole is an entire home to yourself. You have access to the entire house, large covered deck, even the yard. And with keyless entry, you can come and go as you need, checkin as late as you want, and enjoy your vacation. Interaction with GuestsKealohapau'ole is an entire home to yourself. We live approximately 20 minutes away, and are always available by phone, or through this forum. We are available if you need to ask for location suggestions, etc. The NeighborhoodKealohapau'ole is located in a small, but yet growing subdivision. The subdivision has a paved primary road, with gravel side roads. The subdivision is growing, and yet rural at the same time. The main road in the subdivision, Mauna Kea Road, is paved and maintained by the county. Kealohapau'ole is served by a well maintained gravel road, leading from this paved road, and is about 1/3 mile in from Mauna Kea Road. Mauna Loa Road is another county road, but is compacted gravel, and we are located about 300 feet from this road. Leialoha Avenue, our road, is maintained by our family and new gravel is spread about 4 times a year. Kealohapau'ole is 1 of 6 houses on our street. With 4 of the 6 houses in our family, we take pride and maintain the road very often to make sure it is smooth for everyone. As a result of our family owning a few of the homes in the area, Kealohapau'ole has been safe and crime free since opening. In addition, if something urgent was to arise, you will have people around to help you while we are being summoned. There are no street lights in the neighborhood, so if you arrive after dark, please drive slowly. Your first night will be greeted by a lit front porch. As mentioned, our subdivision is still growing in all aspects. New homes are constantly being built. Because there are no building restrictions, and because we are rural in nature, you will encounter all types of buildings, from large 2 story homes, to even travel trailers. Its what makes our neighborhood unique, as we have young families with children, to retired folks enjoying the rural settings. Getting AroundBig Island has very few public transportation options. Although the county bus does stop at the front of the subdivision, we would recommend you find alternatives. Rental cars have no problem accessing Kealohapau'ole. Other Things to NotePlease note: As with about 80% of the Big Island, Kealohapau'ole is served by a water catchment system. For everyones safety, we do not recommend drinking the water from the kitchen tap. For drinking water, Kealohapau'ole does provide potable water from a county source for your drinking needs, in a 5 gallon dispenser that has both hot and cold features. It is always Kealohapau'ole's commitment to provide guest with the best service and vacation experience available.

All roads are paved and lots are all 2 acres. Both Mountain View or Kurtistown towns (~10 minutes away) have a post office, gas station, and convenience store. Keaau town (~15 minutes away) has a post office, police station, restaurants, hardware store, farmer's market, grocery store, natural food store, gas stations, and convenience stores. Getting AroundThe local Hele On bus stops less than a mile away but at limited times, so having a vehicle is highly recommended for staying at my place. The house is located about 30 minutes from Hilo airport, and at least two hours from Kona airport. It is about 25 minutes to Volcanoes National Park. Want to see something? Ask your host - I know all the spots! Other Things to NoteThere are friendly pets here! Large outdoor dogs and indoor cats. All are healthy and friendly. Cats do not enter the private bedroom. Visiting pets considered for guests - please ask! Also beware of Hawaii Quarantine law - (URL HIDDEN) Drinking water is hauled in by host - do not drink tap water! On-demand propane water heater can only power one thing at a time - so, one shower or kitchen sink with hot water only. Directions for switching tanks will be posted, and is very easy if I'm not home to do it. Though I offer my room at a very cheap rate, Hawaii is expensive! Car rentals, food, fuel, etc might give you 'sticker shock!' Please take your time in researching and planning, especially if you are moving here or visiting long-term. This is the wet side of the island - Hawaii is in the tropics and it does rain a lot! Plan and pack accordingly. Also, bugs and mosquitoes are a part of life.

They sure did to our vacation We loved our stay here very much and hate to go back to CA. Staying here is like being in paradise! We loved it here, and felt very much at home. Thank you for being so attentive to our needs. We hope to be back. Your property is so beautiful & the weather was fabulous. Back home in Oregon it has been very cold so this is nice break. Owners, Thomas & Angela, are very friendly and inviting. Great value. 2BR/1bath. The rooms were extremely clean and comfortable. There is a flat screen tv, dvd player, water filter on the kitchen sink. Soft rainwater was a big plus.
