The SpaceThis little cabin is set in the bush, ten minutes walk from Muriwai Beach, the well known Gannet Colony and 5 minutes drive to the famous Muriwai Golf Course. There are two double beds and it is perfect for a couple or two single people. It is too small for 4 adults so please don't book if you are 4 people. You have your own new, modern bathroom with a walk in shower and a little kitchen with double electric hotplate, microwave, fridge, toaster, kettle, crockery and cutlery. The bed up on the sleeping platform has a peek of the sea but if you don't fancy climbing up to it there is another double bed below. I have recently decorated both inside and out and with the new insulation and the all day sun it is very warm and cosy. The TV has freeview and the WIFI is free but it can be a bit intermittent. Guest AccessThe cabin is self contained so there is no need for access to the main house. However there is a lovely view from the top of the steps so I am happy for my guests to come up and look at the sunset. Interaction with GuestsI work from home Monday & Tuesday and Wed-Thursday in the city so often won't be home during the week days but I will be home in the evening and at the weekends. I respect my guests privacy so leave it up them as to how much interaction they like. The view from the top of the steps is stunning so I encourage them to come and sit up in my garden. I love meeting new people and am always up for a chat but I also like my own privacy. The NeighborhoodMuriwai is a little community that used to be mainly holiday homes but these days most people live here full time and commute to the city. It is a wild west coast surf beach so we have a lot of surfers and we have a wonderful Surf Club (I'm the Treasurer so I would say that!). The Surf School down at the beach gives lessons, hires surf boards and also hires out land yachts. Surf Kiting is very popular when the wind is right. The other attractions, apart from the 50km long beach, are the world renowned Gannet colony and the famous Muriwai Golf Club which is almost on the beach! There are many places for hiring horses or you can go on the wine trail through Kumeu, Huapai and Waimuaku as the Nor'West is where the first ever vineyards in New Zealand were established (Soljans, Nobilos, Matua Valley, Coopers Creek, Kumeu River etc). The Hilary Trail ends (or begins) in Muriwai. It's a day's walk along the coast to Bethel's Beach (check out the website) but the whole trek is 3-5 days. Goldy's Bush in Constable Rd is 2 minutes drive away and you walk down through the Kauri forest to an amazing waterfall (it is all down hill though!) There are steps down to the beach from my street or you can walk through the Edwin Michelson bush track if you prefer. I like to walk through the bush to Maori Bay to check out the Gannets and then down the path to the main Muriwai Beach. From there I either walk along the beach or go to the Sand Dunz cafe for an icecream, burger or cup of coffee before the walk home up the steps. We have the Sand Dunz cafe near the beach and the Top Shop up the road, both of which do really nice take-aways plus the Link Café at the Golf Club is open to the public 10am - 3pm and for meals on Friday nights. The Top Shop do home-made take-away curry's every Saturday night. The surf club bar is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights 4pm-9pm but I'll need to come with you and sign you in. If you don't like swimming in the sea we even have a local swimming pool. A drive (or walk or bike) up Coast Road, past the Village Green (that has a tennis court, skate boarding rank and basketball hoop), takes you to the north end of the beach where you can drive onto and along the beach (for 50kms). That's also where they take the horses and there are 2 deep fresh water swimming holes at the car park at the end of the road. There's also tracks into Woodhill Forest from there but the main entrance to Woodhill Forest is up on S/Hway 16 - they have amazing mountain bike tracks (plus they hire mountain bikes). Just a bit further on from Woodhill Forest is the old settlement of Helensville and Parakai Hot Springs which are natural hot pools with amazing water slides. If you're in a car and you're heading north then S/Hway 16 along the Kaipara Coast is a good alternative route to Highway 1 and the Harbour Bridge. You meet up with Highway 1 at Wellsford. You could also catch one of the numerous farmer's markets that are popular now - mainly on Friday nights and Saturday or Sunday mornings. Fresh Choice supermarket is 10 minutes drive away in Waimauku. Getting AroundGetting around is tricky as we have no public transport. Once you are here everything is in walking distance but life is much easier with a car. The commute to town takes 40-60 minutes depending on the traffic (it's 40km) and it's an hours drive to the airport from my place. There is an airport bus into Auckland city which costs $17 per person. A taxi from the airport to my place will be about $140. I charge $30 each way to pick guests up in town or drop them off. If I'm already in town and it coincides with when I finish work it will cost $30 but if I have to come into town especially it will cost $60. And the same applies to taking guests into town. If it coincides with when I'm going in I charge $30 but $60 if I have to go in especially. I have spare parking for 2 cars. There is a bus from Westgate to Helensville every 2 hours and you would get off at Waimauku but it's still a 10 minute drive (9km) from there down to Muriwai and you have to get from the city to Westgate. If you did that I would charge $12 to come and pick you up from Waimauku or drop you up there. It's a great area for riding push bikes so that's another option. I also have a small road bike that you can borrow for a small fee. Other Things to NoteAll of Muriwai is on septic tanks so guests need to be aware of that. It means being careful what you put down the sink (especially fats) and going easy on the toilet paper and water. I provide eco friendly soap, shampoo & washing up liquid. There are no supermarkets in Muriwai so if you need groceries you'll need to go the New World supermarket in Kumeu before you come down to the beach. Our 2 cafes close at 7pm in the summer and 5pm in the winter. Our tap water is perfectly good for drinking so please think of the environment before you buy bottled water in NZ.

The SpaceThe silence of the place is its main gift. Most people choose this cottage because it is free of immediate interruptions by phone and WiFi - the nearest tower is at the beach. Drive access and parking for two to three cars. Guests are out of sight and sound of the owners who live further up the driveway. You do not pass their house to get to the cottage. We use the convention that you "toot" your car horn if you need to speak to one of the owners. Once guests have been shown the cottage and given the key, they are left alone unless they want to contact the owner. There are a lot of activities in the nearby area. A horse riding business and a surf hire at the beach, plenty of restaurants and wineries within 20 minutes drive. You need a car because the nearest bus stop is 9 km away! Guest AccessThe cottage is closed to guests from the beginning of May until the last weekend (Labour weekend) of October. If you have a particular requirement across the winter, contact us. Interaction with GuestsOnce you have been welcomed, shown around and given the key, we will leave you alone to enjoy yourself your way. If you have small children and they are keen on animals, they are welcome to feed the ducks, chickens, Guinea fowl and sheep with us. The NeighborhoodPlenty of activities nearby from horse hire to surf board hire. Restaurants and wineries which offer food abound. Getting AroundYou will need a car to get around. We are about 9 km from the nearest bus stop with services to the central city. Other Things to NoteIf you do need to make a phone call, it is usually possible to get a signal if you go up hill into one of the paddocks.
