Bell Bijou is a lovingly restored sandstone bakery building in a beautiful small country town in the foothills of the Bunya Mountains. Built in 1912, it has weathered a century of the ups and downs of these once vibrant rural areas of Australia. Now, with lots of TLC she enters her second century as a small haven for friends visiting with a wish to explore the best of our region. We have built a new cottage at the rear, with modern shower/WC/kitchen facilities as well as our own living space. The Aussie Bush has many local events occurring throughout the year - from camel races to horse races, camp drafts to country markets, opera to art exhibitions. We have a historic railway station, Popey's shed full of the machinery of yester year and endless wonderful walking with views of the Bunya Mountains in the distance. Or drive to the Bunya Mountains - only about half an hour and you'll be in another magic world of the unique micro-climate which attracts migratory species from across the globe. Bell has a wonderful small golf course right in town, the sensational Pips'n'Cherries cafe and our Catholic Church has just celebrated its 100th birthday and is famous for its beautiful murals inside and the biblical garden showcasing local artists. The new Bell Bunya Community centre has a permanent display of art works by the locals - who have set a long standing tradition of artistic excellence. The historic Jimbour House is just 15 minutes drive away, Bunya Mountains half an hour away. The Bellview Hotel is right next door and provides great meals with a real country flair. So much to do and see - as much as you like, or as little as you like. Perfect for a group of friends - either by motor bike or car - you'll find a wonderful haven at Bell Bijou. Bell is a picturesque small town approximately 40 km north of Dalby and 70 km south of Kingaroy. For those who love a map - if you were to draw a straight line from Caboolture (north of Brisbane on the Coast) you would run smack into beautiful Bell. We have an altitude of approximately 500 metres - in the past it was a popular weekend train journey from Brisbane to Bell, then a bus to the Bunyas - to escape the summer swelter on the Coast. Unfortunately, the railway is a beautiful historical monument opposite The Bijou where you can sit and dream of days gone by - but you can certainly still enjoy the cooler atmosphere. The Bellview Hotel is famous for its sensational drinks on the deck to watch the sunset and then a great country pub meal. Pips'n'Cherries cafe offers some of the best country coffee/cakes/lunches for miles around. The Bell Catholic Church is a joy to behold as the strong Bell art community has breathed new life into the premises with the murals inside and the magic biblical garden now evolving outside - recently placed on the Open Garden register, it is becoming a wonderful attraction for our town. You can wander our historic railway station, check the rolling stock lovingly cared for and visit Popey's shed (in honour of Arthur Pope, its custodian). No shortage of memory blasts as you remember those old machines. We have a fantastic 9 hold country golf course - very well patronised. Throughout the year we start with our race meeting in January, our show and rodeo in February, then on to camel races, art exhibitions, camp drafts, moto-X weekends - no shortage of things to do. But best of all - you can do as little as lay in front of the fire in winter, read a book, enjoy some bracing walks in the countryside and simply BREATHE. Bunya mountains, ideal for small groups - bike riders, car enthusiasts, hikers, artists, families. Accommodation is within the main stone building and dormitory style. A fireplace for winter, drinks on the 'deck', dinner at the pub. 3 hours from Brisbane or Coast. Bring the kids scooters, mountain bikes, walking shoes. Breakfast provided.

The SpaceWe love to live here and are happy to be able to share it with you! 47 acres of peace await you. Situated on a sandstone ridge we enjoy lovely views of the Lockyer Valley between the trees. There are many spots to sit and enjoy and relax. It's close enough to facilities and yet so far. The house is a simple shed structure, comfortable and open plan. There's plenty of room to move outside and living lends itself to being outside most of the year. We also have an unloved tennis court if you have the urge! Guest AccessGuests have exclusive use of the bedroom, ensuite, sitting area and are welcome to share the downstairs part of our home with us including the (simple yet effective) kitchen, BBQ, lounge and laundry facilities. There are several outdoor areas for enjoying meals or relaxing with an afternoon drink. Interaction with GuestsWe'll cross paths for sure given the nature of our living. We'll be in and out with our daily routines and we can spend most of our time in our space upstairs. We are fairly private people and respect that you may or may not want interaction. We are open for a chat and to assist in any way we can. The NeighborhoodThe Lockyer Valley is an agricultural hub and known as Australia's salad bowl. It's one of the 10 most fertile regions in the world. It's a region of small communities with interesting streetscapes and some quirky cafes & gift shops. There's no huge infrastructure so activities are created locally and you'll find markets, horse activities, expos and festivals taking place throughout the year. Take a look at this clip for some highlights - (URL HIDDEN) We're about 15 minutes from Gatton where you can pick up all your essentials. There are a number of restaurants for eating out including Indian, Thai and pub meals. If Gatton doesn't have what you are craving, Toowoomba is approximately 30 minutes drive. Getting AroundYou'll need your own transport to get to us and trip around the area. If your visit is purely to recuperate, we can arrange to pick you up in Gatton. Other Things to NoteWe try to be environmentally responsible. We are off grid for our electricity and our water supply is provided by the heavens so we ask you to respect this and be 'reasonable' in the use of these resources. If we are experiencing extended inclement weather, we may need to run the generator to boost the batteries. Apart from this, you'd barely know we're using a sustainable energy source. Since we're on a ridge, we have a relatively steep 800m driveway. It is gravel. It's suitable for most vehicles. Take it reasonably slowly. Occasionally we have international students or backpackers visiting as we encourage them to have a positive experience in the Lockyer Valley and to meet some locals. You may see a tent or two and hear some tantalising languages.

The SpaceGuests can occupy 1 or spread over 2 bedrooms and we can accommodate a third guest for an extra $30. Guests will have their own private bathroom, toilet, refrigerator, television and have shared access to kitchen, laundry and living area. It can get quite crisp in winter. One bedroom is equipped with an electric blanket and we maintain a wood heater 24/7 during these cold periods. We enjoy mostly mild summers, however have ceiling fans in all rooms and air-conditioning in the main living area. We are blessed with a few Citrus trees and in winter encourage our guests to take a bag of lemonades, mandarins and oranges. Guests may utilise our outdoor area and BBQ or picnic in a secluded paved area with a chiminea in the very back of the yard. Guest AccessWe are accessible by public transport (less than 5 minutes walk from a main bus stop). Guests will be able to drive a car, motorbike, caravan or trailer down our drive way with plenty of parking to spare. We do have a gate that we normally keep closed, but unlocked. Guests are encouraged to drive down the 80m driveway and park in private cul-de-sac (plenty of space for U-turns and towing things). Interaction with GuestsWe ourselves have enjoyed the hospitality of other Airbnb hosts. Travellers ourselves, we understand guests want an inexpensive, pleasant place to stay, privacy and sometimes an idea of activities, places to visit etc. We will have a collection of menus, bus time tables, maps, brochures etc. for your reference and are happy to provide you with any advice (should you require it). We do enjoy meeting new people, and we love sharing our place, however we also understand the importance of privacy and space. The NeighborhoodHighfields is mostly made up of half to 1 acre leafy blocks and bordering rural landscapes. Our place is within 5 minutes walk of a library, public swimming pool, gymnasium, The Cultural Centre (function centre), Bakery, Woolworths, Caltex, BWS, Tavern, McDonalds, Thai and Indian Restaurants, Dominoes, Eagle Boys, Cracker Jack Chicken, Chemist, Medical Centre, The Kerb Café, Florist, Post Office and other novelty stores. Other popular destinations within 20 minutes walk from our place are The Chocolate Cottage, Jacaranda Place and Abbey Lane (each with a café, gift, accessary, home decorative and craft stores). Within 5 minutes drive towards Cabarlah, there is the Black Forest Hill Grandfather and Cuckoo Clock Centre and The Danish Café (Both destinations provide café meals, selling craft, jewellery, etc. We share the same road as The Pioneer Village. Guests can enjoy a 10 minute walk or a very short drive to this destination. A place to visit if you are partial to viewing antique machinery, vehicles and other historical displays. Certain times of the year, the Pioneer Village host bush poetry breakfasts and various displays i.e. damper and butter making, honey harvesting, etc. Spring Bluff is a historical railway station, café and garden within 10 minutes drive from Highfields and during the Spring carnival period visitors are able to ride a steam train into Toowoomba and back. Getting AroundWithin 5 minutes walk at the Highfields Shopping Centre is the main bus stop. Guests can travel from the main bus terminal in Toowoomba to Highfields. Highfields is within 20 minutes drive from the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport and 15 minutes drive from the Toowoomba centre. A 1.5 hour drive from Brisbane. Other Things to NoteWe are animal lovers, however we keep our dogs outside (they don't wipe their feet) and our fat cat inside (he's not allowed in any bedroom other than our own). Our dogs are friendly. They'll bark when they first meet you, however will let you in the gate and bring you a toy.

Should you need any additional information, please do ask upon arrival. Otherwise your privacy will be respected during your stay. The NeighborhoodHighfields is a beautiful community located about 15 mintues from the CBD of Toowoomba, high on the Great Dividing Range in South East Queensland. We are located in a quiet residential area in the famous Shannon Memorial Park Estate. Locals walk their dogs and can take longer walks along the bush sidewalk right into Highfields about 5kms from Maison de La Chere. Most residential lots are about 2 acres each so homes have an enormous amount of garden space, and most in the estate have an escarpment view. There is an abundance of birdlife and wallaby families regularly snack on our lawn. Getting AroundMost travellers have their own transport to adventure this region, and this is highly recommended to enjoy all that is on offer. There is a bus stop on the New England Highway at the entrance of the estate, about 1.5km from Maison de La Chere, that provides transport into Highfields and Toowoomba CBD. Other Things to NoteWe share our home with our pets, which includes a Cockatiel, "Spinach", and old spoilt cat, "Diva" and a rambunctious pug, "Teacup", who is always eager to greet. The pug is free to roam the property, and you should know that she loves to make new friends. Otherwise, we too are private people.
