The SpaceThe space will comfortably accommodate two people in a large queen sized bed but if you can stand sharing an en suite and living space with another there is also a king single bed allowing for 3 guests in total (so long as two of them are REAL close friends...)
BE AWARE - THERE IS ONLY A 50 LITRE HOT WATER SYSTEM - ONLY ENOUGH FOR 1 OR 2 PEOPLE TO HAVE CONSECUTIVE SHOWERS.
MORE THAN THAT YOU MAY NEED TO WAIT FOR THE SYSTEM TO HEAT UP AGAIN BEFORE THE NEXT GUEST GETS A TUB.
Our home is a sprawling quirkily evolving eclectic canvas; part tropical greenhouse and jungle, part improvisation workshop, part art studio, all of a slightly anarchic constantly changing composition. (We would never consider shopping at Ikea or watching any TV program involving adversarial reality and/or bogan house make overs, although we're always enthralled and inspired by Kevin McCloud and Grand Designs.)
If you insist on lovely suburban tidy townness, neatly trimmed herbaceous borders, minimalist generic and tediously `nice` hotel decor, or twee boutique pensions this may not be the place for you, but then again you probably should be reconsidering staying in and about Newtown on that criteria.
We don't iron our pillow cases or sheets (we have better things to do with our lives) so you'll need to be happy slepping on somewhat crinkly but nevertheless fresh and clean manchester.
Frequently asked Q&As...
• I want a room with en-suite...
° You're in luck - this studio cabin has en suite bathroom and toilet facilities that you'll only have to share with who ever you bring along.
• Is breakfast provided?
° Not as such but you're welcome to help yourself to the abundance of mangoes, bananas and strawberries growing wildly in the garden (in season), and when the vege garden is up and running you can avail yourself of whatever fresh produce is in season.
• I have electrical appliances with overseas plugs...
° Overseas power adapters are provided in the room.
• I'd like to check in early / check out late...
° Unfortunately you'll have to take the luck of the draw - the studio is normally more or less fully booked so it is almost a certainty there will be incoming / outgoing guests on the day in question.
If they elect to check out early / arrive late (and let me know in advance) there may be some leeway, however if they decide to be right on the designated time then it will not be possible to accommodate your request.
Please bear in mind it's not unlikely they may have made exactly the same request as yourself.
• I'm particularly anxious / fastidious about parking / my car...
° There is free 2 hour parking on the street outside 8:30 am (08:30) to 6:00 pm (18:00) Monday to Friday - effectively you only need to be aware of it between 10:30 am (10:30) and 4.00 pm (16:00) weekdays. It is rarely checked, and only with easily brushed off chalk tyre markings.
The vast majority of our motorised guest find this the simplest and most efficient option - quick to park, quick to leave and no issues with reversing off /into the street while avoiding traffic / fences / pedestrians / animals / buildings / our hard won flower beds (see below).
If you really need to park off street then we can sort to have you park in our driveway, however as it would be less than 2 metres difference away across the unfenced property line it is moot whether there would be any real or practical advantage for the more security anxious. We will ask you to take particular car in parking your vehicle as close to the house as possible as you will want to leave as much wide room for your own access down the driveway, and we will get a bit stroppy if you oafishly damage our beautiful garden beds and blossoming plants by inconsiderate trampling or tossing about of luggage.
(Don't even get us started on those incompetents behind the wheel who somehow manage drive over them.)
• The ceiling needs painting, and the shower screen is mouldy...
° We tried painting the ceiling, we really did - gallons of paint everywhere, lots of swearing, blisters and tears - before we learnt the hard way what every professional painter knows - so called popcorn ceilings are the work of the devil and impossible to paint; they crumble, absorb all moisture and pigment without a trace like the Sahara, and really nothing short of a fire brigade sized industrial spray paint rig will make any sort of aesthetic impact.
As soon as we can get a good week clear (a day to paint, a few more to let the fumes dissipate) we will have just that sort of crack at it , but, for better worse, the studio has more or less been fully booked from the get go so we haven't yet had a chance.
Yeah, the shower door... Sorry about that - tried our utmost to clean it but unfortunately the mongrel mould has crept through a crack inside the laminated glass plates and has made a home between them where we and endless baths of bleach cannot get at the cowardly stuff.
The glass panels are a custom size so none of the replacement doors we've been able to source will fit - but plans are afoot to get clean new laminated replacements manufactured. Guest AccessMake yourself at home in our spacious yard - vegetable gardens taking shape from which you should be able to pick fresh produce for your cooking.
Free WiFi access, fresh mangoes, bananas, tomatoes and strawberries from the garden (in season), washing machine, worm farm...
Mi casa es su casa. Interaction with GuestsInteract or not as much as you feel comfortable - the granny flat is yours alone while we're likely to be pottering about in the garden. Feel free to grab one of us if you want some local advice or history or philosophical discussions - similarly if you're here for a bit of a look around maybe we can lend a bit of a hand.
Apart from that I can be as scarce or handy as you feel appropriate. The NeighborhoodIf you insist on lovely suburban tidy townness, neatly trimmed herbaceous borders, minimalist generic and tediously `nice` hotel decor, or twee boutique pensions this may not be the place for you, but then again you probably should be reconsidering staying in and about Newtown on that criteria.
Our fantastically artistic and creative surrounds (Newtown / Marrickville / Enmore / St Peters) are one of the funkiest hubs of Australia, a rare inner city island resounding with alternative anti-gentrification energy and and sans bourgeoisie vitality - we live here because we love the community and our home is emblematic of that. Getting AroundShort stroll to St Peters railway station - just a couple of stops to the CBD or the airport (but a short taxi ride may be cheaper).
King Street Newtown is close with all its buses.
If you're a bit of walker town is not very far away or you're welcome to use one of the free bicycles. Other Things to NoteIf you are travelling with children please include them in the total number of guests of your booking - please bear in mind the maximum occupancy is 3 guests irrespective of age.
Please don't send us an enquiry or booking for 2 guests saying something like...
`there'll just be my partner and I PLUS my [ X quantity ] child (or children)...`
