All in the planning If London were to have an ivory tower, it would be Highgate. This is the residence of choice for so many of the city’s intellectuals, a number of whom rest here eternally beneath the mossy stones of Highgate Cemetery. The roads are wide, the air is clear, and the coffee houses reverberate with the chatter of curious souls. If you’re one of them, then in this home, filled with books, art and intriguing knick-knacks, you’ll find a space in which you can let your mind finally run free. There’s even a snow-white study up in the attic – and if you want to call it an ivory tower, we’d be the last to stop you. Wit and wisdom Your hosts are young grandparents with edge. A good-humoured pair, they’re cultured and well-travelled. He’s a businessman, and she’s a set and costume designer, hence the master bedroom’s dressmakers’ dummy. Clever clever The sitting room of Western Road is a relaxed, unfussy space, with original cornicing and distressed paintwork. The empty frame above the fireplace is ready to be filled with whatever your imagination can conjure, while the shelves and coffee table heave with books. The living area flows seamlessly into the kitchen and dining space, where there’s a fresh, rustic feel, with hanging pans and pots of basil just begging to be shredded. There’s a second, more informal sitting room overlooking the sloping garden. A barbeque, a terrace filled with herbs and flowers and a seat beneath the gnarled tree – on summer nights this is a small corner of paradise. The guest bedroom has its own top floor sitting room, while the grand master has a walk-in wardrobe, leading to a pure white ensuite. The high life You’re in a particularly green part of London, so those who lust for chlorophyll will find refuge in Highgate Woods and Hampstead Heath. Visit Karl Marx in Highgate Cemetery, then return to the land of the living with a cup of tea in one of your pretty local cafes. Or, if you’re heading over to the West End, the tube from East Finchley to Leicester Square takes twenty two minutes. Additional amenities include: iron & ironing board, hob, toiletries, cafetiere, music player, hairdryer, onefinestay iphone, barbeque. Cancellation Policy No-quibble cool-off period. Provided you book more than seven days before the start of your stay, you can cancel your booking no questions asked within 24 hours of making it, and we will refund 100% of any charges. Early cancellation. If you cancel at least 2 weeks before you are due to arrive, we will charge you 50% of the cost of your stay. Late cancellation. We’ll be as flexible as we can if you need to cancel. However, once you’re within two weeks of the start of your stay, we can’t refund your booking. If you have any immediate questions, please contact us directly.
