Manyat is the name of the Peak to the rear of our 125 acre farm in Porongurup and our cottages offer views from this peak down to Gibraltar Rock. A short stroll uphill on the farm provides stunning views of the Stirling Range to the north. Although we have lived in the area for a few years, we fell in love with the, then bare, property in 2011. In fact, as we walked around, Lorna sat on a log in one of the bush areas as birds fluttered and Kangaroos fussed around and stated she was staying! So, we decided to purchase it and move. Early 2012 saw the commencement of our house which now stands in the centre followed by Manyat Peak Cottages which were completed in February 2013 The cottages are individually named after locally occurring birds, the Boobook Owl and Carnaby's Cockatoo. They are approximately 70 metres apart and stand in their own paddock. Placement between the renowned Maleeya's Thai restaurant and Hillside Bamboo nursery to our east and the awarded Duke's Winery to the west provides a two attractive activities within a short walk. At present, on the farm we graze our small herd of Dexter cattle. Our ladies currently number 9 and are looked after by our young bull "Galaxy". We always have a number of calves of varying ages. We keep and breed our own chickens. We currently have black Australops looked after by "Buster" the rooster. Our blue Australops and our Light Sussex are looked after by "Speckle" the rooster. He also keeps an eye on our selection of cross breed layers. We don't farm intensively and, although not certified, we are as organic as possible. This leaves plenty of pasture to share with the native Kangaroo families which are abundant, particularly in the evenings. Rob and Lorna hope you will enjoy being at Manyat Peak as much as they do!

This means that on occasion you will distantly hear farm machinery operating and the sounds of cows, chickens and sheep as they go about their business. It all adds to the charm of your stay. The studio accommodation is adjacent to Tanen Spa Studio and is separated by a 3m walkway. Please no dogs are accepted due to livestock. Local Attractions Tanen Cottage is located with the Shire of Plantagenet which is famous for its wines and food. Indeed there are over ten wineries within a ten minute drive, so if you like the odd glass of red or white, or perhaps a nice port then you will be in your element here. The property also backs onto the spectacular Porongurup Ranges which is a bush-walkers and bird-lovers paradise. There are many walks to choose from all graded for difficulty and easily accessible. Being centrally located between Mount Barker and Albany (a 25 minute drive to either) there are a range of resturants and cafe choices for you to enjoy. Thai treats, pub-tucker, chinese and italian dishes are all just a short drive away. ************************** A Day at Millers Cottage ************************** Nestled in the shadow of the Porongurup Range lies Millers Cottage and nearby is a wine growing region known for its peppery Shiraz and world-class Riesling. But that’s just the beginning, the heart of WA’s Great-Southern, is one of those rare places where scenic beauty meets genuine friendliness, fantastic food and hospitality. Awake to the early morning sight of Western Gray Kangaroos grazing in the grassy area on the edge of the forest and the raucous chortling of kookaburras, have a leisurely breakfast overlooking the valley all the way to Albany, then dust off your hiking boots and you are on your way.... Scrambling down from Devil’s Slide, you head across the mountain and up again to Nancy’s Peak for more head-in-the-clouds scenery and the purple haze, in spring, of bluebells along the ridge. The descent trails through dense forest, providing a welcome respite from the sun, and emerges at the famous Tree in the Rock, a karri tree growing tenaciously from the crevice of a granite boulder. The round trip takes three hours and by then of course you will have worked up an appetite. The Porongurup Village Tearoom offers a home-cooked menu including toasted focaccia with fresh fillings and a salad from the garden. The food tastes divine, or is it the mountain air? With the clock slipping past noon it won’t take too much to convince you that it is a respectable hour to indulge in a little of what the Porongurups are famous for – wine. Your first stop is Jingalla, a family-run winery which produces whites, reds and the creatively named ‘Pawny Tort’, a moniker embargo. Just up the road is Abbey Creek Vineyard, owned and run by Michael Dilworth. The label has notched up several awards for its cabernet-sauvignon-merlot as well as taking out champion small winery last year. An impressive feat for just 2ha of vineyard. A little off the beaten track is Springview Winery. Drive down tree-lined Woodlands Road, rabbits will dart out into the mottled afternoon sunshine and the cattle dog will greet you as you pull up at the house. Owner Andy Colquhoun will join you for a tipple in the tasting cellar, as he expands on the health benefits of drinking wine. He claims it is a boon for both heart and sanity, and who are we at Tanen to disagree? No tour of the Porongurups would be complete without a visit to Duke’s, where you will be greeted by ducks and donkeys and poured tastings by Ian Ranson (aka Duke). His Riesling is medal-winning, the sparkling shiraz is a gem and, despite your best intentions, you are bound to walk out with a case of each! TIP: make sure to get a “Porongurup Passport”, available at all wineries in the area, and receive a $10 voucher for every five bottles of wine you buy. Come back to Millers Cottage, shower, change and select one of the day’s wine purchases, say a bottle of Jingalla’s Shimmer shiraz merlot, and take off to Maleeya’s Thai Cafe...but before you leave take a few moments to enjoy the glorious reds, oranges, pinks and yellows of the ever-changing and colourful sunsets as the sun dips below the horizon of Albany and King George Sound. Maleeya's will be full of people and the sweet smell of coriander when you arrive. The tom yum soup is the best we have ever had and the jungle curry has just the right amount of bite. It’s easy to see why there’s never a spare seat. In the morning as the sun rises over the mountains in a riotous blaze of pink and the kookaburras are at it again, we think you will be catching on...you would be laughing too, it you lived here at Tanen; and the desire to wake up and explore will overcome even the biggest of sleepyheads!

The guest accommodation is detached from the primary residence and includes: * Queen bed with ensuite * Outdoor heated 8-seat under-cover spa with amazing views to the coast and rainbow lighting system * Fridge, tea, coffee & toast facilities * Microwave * Kitchette with sink and pantry * Outdoor undercover BBQ with Wok burner. * High quality bed linen and towels * Romantic slow-combustion wood fire * Private lounge suite & writing desk * TV, DVD and CD Player * Extensive DVD library * Up to two additional fold-up single bed are available on request * Fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin. * Optus and Telstra Mobile phone coverage. The accommodation is a modern, open plan large room (10m x 10m) with a lounge, dining table, kitchenette (sink and bench top) and wood fire. The room has a separate ensuite with shower and toilet. The spa is located outside on east end of the undercover veranda which is 20m long and 4m wide, with excellent views and an outdoor dining setting (and BBQ). Please note that Tanen Farm is located in an agricultural area. This means that on occasion you will distantly hear farm machinery operating and the sounds of cows, chickens and sheep as they go about their business. It all adds to the charm of your stay. The studio accommodation is adjacent to Tanen Cottage and is separated by a 3m walkway. The facility is studio accommodation and does not have full kitchen facilities. Please no dogs are accepted due to livestock and the studio flooring being wood which is easily water damaged. Local Attractions Tanen is located with the Shire of Plantagenet which is famous for its wines and food. Indeed there are over ten wineries within a ten minute drive of Tanen, so if you like the odd glass of red or white, or perhaps a nice port, then you will be in your element at Tanen. The property also backs onto the spectacular Porongurup Ranges which is a bush-walkers and bird-lovers paradise. There are many walks to choose from all graded for difficulty and easily accessible from Tanen. Being centrally located between Mount Barker and Albany there are a range of resturants and cafe choices for you to enjoy. Thai treats, pub-tucker, chinese and italian dishes are all just a short drive away. A Day at Tanen Nestled in the shadow of the Porongurup Range lies “Tanen” and nearby is a wine growing region known for its peppery Shiraz and world-class Riesling. Come back to Tanen, shower, change and select one of the day’s wine purchases, say a bottle of Jingalla’s Shimmer shiraz merlot, and take off to Maleeya’s Thai Cafe...but before you leave take a few moments to enjoy the glorious reds, oranges, pinks and yellows of the ever-changing and colourful sunsets at Tanen as the sun dips below the horizon of Albany and King George Sound. Maleeyas will be full of people and the sweet smell of coriander when you arrive.

Our cottages offer fully self-contained, self catering accommodation in the form of one double bedroom with a queen bed and a single bed in a separate room in the case of "Carnaby". Our other cottage, "Boobook" has a bunk bed in the single room. We provide continental breakfast supplies for your first morning in the form of home baked bread and a selection of preserves, eggs and cereals. Tea and coffee is also provided. Both cottages have full cooking facilities, a fridge, TV, air conditioning wood heater as well as laundry facilities for those wishing to dwell a little longer in this lovely area or to use the location as a springboard to exploring further afield. The cottages are backed by woodland and to the front offer views of the Porongurup Range from Manyat Peak to Gibraltar Rock. We are located between the awarded Duke's winery to one side and the renowned Maleeya's Thai restaurant to the other.
