Every group who has been in what is now Nauvoo, has played a part in its history. The land was owned by one of Nauvoo’s first land owners, Joseph B.Teas. He purchased the property in 1827. Those who owned the land through the years include Ethan Kimball (brother of Hiram Kimball and cousin of Heber C. Kimball), Peter Fullmer, and Pulaski Cahoon (son of Reynold Cahoon). A prominent early Nauvoo resident, Adam Swartz soon aquired the property, and it was during his period of ownership that the current building was constructed. The building was constructed prior to 1860 by Michael Baumert (who also constructed the Stone Arch Bridge in Nauvoo). Michael Baumert was an early German immigrant to Nauvoo, and was a master stone mason. Initially constructed as the English Methodist Church building, it was constructed with Nauvoo Temple Stone purchased from the Icarian’s. Joseph Smith III made the following statement in 1860: “The Methodists, who had long worshiped in the old Music Hall, north and east of the temple lot, purchased a lot on Mulholland Street a little more than a quarter of a mile from the temple east, and built them a small chapel, using temple stones for corners, window ledges, and caps…” From this we know that much of the building was constructed with Nauvoo Temple stone. One fragment of a star stone is still visible on the exterior. Emma Smith played organ here, and attended with her children. The church building was sold in 1925 to the American Legion, who held it until 1998 when it was sold to the Nauvoo Faith Heritage Society. In 2001 the building began its next phase, serving as a quilt shop, woodworking shop, and was even used as a costume workshop for the LDS film “Legacy”. It has now been thoroughly renovated, and serves as an elegant vacation home for those visiting Nauvoo, and looking for an historic experience, with all the modern luxuries. Just up Parley Street from the Midwest's largest collection of restored historic preservation sites, nestled behind a canopy of 145-year-old trees, sits an unexpected historic treasure, the Nauvoo Grand. This turn-of-the-century home was built by Cecil J. Baxter whose family had come to Nauvoo with the Icarian movement in 1855. The Baxters planted vineyards and opened their winery, originally living in an old Mormon home until they built the two-story brick home which stands today on the same site. The basement walls display a number of stones salvaged from the original Nauvoo Temple just a few blocks away. Today, the old Baxter home has been transformed by Cassie and Kent Barrett into luxury accommodations, offering the grace and intimacy of Victorian times. Perched on a gentle rise, the Nauvoo Grand is still surrounded by the Baxter family vineyards and sits directly across the street from Illinois' oldest winery, still owned and operated by descendants of the founders.

This historic home is just seven blocks from the temple and sleeps up to ten comfortably. Rufus Abbott started building this home in 1839 and finished it in 1845 just before his family left with Brigham Young to travel to Salt Lake City in February 1846. This home feels and looks like what it may have in the 1840’s thus letting you ‘Sleep Where the Pioneer’s Slept’. The original pioneer brick home has three bedrooms (two upstairs) and an old fashioned parlor with library, collectible curio cabinet, historic fireplace and mantle, and a queen size sofa sleeper. A nice place to visit and converts to a bedroom with the pull-out sofa. The historic kitchen has the original fireplace where meals were cooked, in addition to modern appliances added to the other side of the kitchen. Adjacent to the kitchen is the windowed sun-porch overlooking the expansive yard where guests eat at the dining table. The sun porch also contains a breakfast bar with toaster and microwave for our guests. The master suite is on the main level in a 1903 addition to the original brick home. This large suite has a king size bed, full-size sofa sleeper, armoire, and 32” flat screen TV. Adjacent to it is the downstairs bathroom with shower/tub combination. Up the wide pioneer stairs are two bedrooms, each with queen size beds and fireplaces, plus flat screen TVs for modern comfort. One has an antique dresser and armoire, plus a pioneer stairway to the attic where antique chairs and furnishings are stored away. This bedroom also has a cozy bathroom with tub/shower combination. Recent remodeling included new paint, rugs and furnishings throughout this home. All utensils, dishware, linens, and towels are provided. A washer & dryer are also provided for guest use. High speed internet is available as well. In addition to LDS and Nauvoo themed art, the home has a small library of books about Nauvoo and early LDS history, and antiques and collectibles for the ambience of this pioneer home. In addition, very comfortable modern beds, appliances and electronics provide a comfortable stay for your family while you “Sleep Where the Pioneer’s Slept”! Our onsite innkeeper has a separate apartment and is available if needed while you stay in Nauvoo.

With over 10 years experience in Vacation Rentals, you can be confident in your stay. Known as “The Old Stone Church,” “The Legion Hall,” “The Temple Stone Church,” or “The Old Methodist Church,” this building has a remarkable story to tell.
