The SpaceBedrooms listed (10 in all) are in what we call The Inn (renovated horse barn, still sporting stall doors!) Each has one double bed, desk, wardrobe, side table and big window. (Price per room/per night = $65 for 1 person/$80 for 2, includes state & local taxes, fees and breakfast!) The Inn has two kitchenettes, two common areas, a wrap-around deck, a patio, and several shared Men's and Ladies bathrooms (6 toilets, 4 showers). We're on 34 acres, with views of meadows and the Blue Ridge Mountains in beautiful Nelson County Virginia. We also have a private Cottage for a higher rate. Just ask. Guest AccessThe Inn's two kitchenettes include microwave ovens and refrigerators. We also provide an outdoor grill---but due to health dept regs, no conventional stove or oven is at the Inn. Interaction with GuestsOne of us is almost always here to greet you and settle you in when you arrive. And if for some reason we can't coordinate this, we'll write you a note. (So be sure to keep us posted on your eta!) Continental breakfast each morning gives us a chance to chat and touch-base. We love meeting and swapping stories with our fascinating visitors! The NeighborhoodNelson County Virginia has been our playground for 26 years---and we feel spoiled with the beautiful nature, mountains, and friendly community. With the recent bubbling-up of prize-winning brew pubs, a cidery, several wineries and restaurants, our guests have so many choices. Getting AroundIt's really rural out here, so there's not much in the way of public transportation, though I've heard there's a new van company nearby that offers wine-tasting tours. Along with recommending you arrive by car, cyclist-Martin suggests that the hard-core pedalers among you bring your bicycles for exhilarating rides in the mountains! Other Things to NoteOur premises are ideal for retreats, small weddings, reunions, and groups of friends---OR just perfect as a get-away for an individual traveler. According to area cyclists, the Inn is especially suited for those who love tackling mountains and back-road adventures on 2-wheels!

The SpaceCozy and full of art, with just enough room to relax and enjoy a break from day-to-day chaos of home! Guest AccessThe Cottage is a separate little house with all the basics. Interaction with GuestsAs longtime innkeepers, we fully understand the fine line between benign-neglect and conversation overload! In our Cottage, you have SWEET privacy, but we restock the home-baked breakfast goodies, replace towels, and empty trash each day, and we're around if you need anything or want to visit. The NeighborhoodHow can I describe Nelson County Virginia without gushing! We love it here. Fantastic scenic views that take your breath away. Nearby ski-golf resort (Wintergreen), Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail, quiet roads (with monster hills) for cyclists who want to strut-their-stuff, wineries and brewpubs (after the exercise!), gorgeous sunsets, shopping for art and artisan handiwork, the list goes on! Getting AroundSorry, I have to say the automobile is your best bet for getting around---though cyclist-Martin would suggest you could always try 2-wheels. (But keep in mind that he's pedaled his way through nearly 100 countries!)

The SpaceThe house sits on the ridge on Rainbow Ridge Road, with amazing views of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the front and side of the house. The backyard is about 500 feet wooded downhill, with a creek at the bottom. The house is a three-story comfortable family home built in 2008 on three acres of land. On the main floor you will find a well equipped eat-in kitchen, a dining, a living and a bedroom; also a full bath and a laundry room. All of the main floor is lovely bamboo floor. You can enjoy the amazing views while enjoying your meal in the dining room or hanging out in the living room. The top floor has the second bedroom, another full bath and a spacious loft, with TV (with basic dish channels), DVD player and children toys. A futon sofa in the loft opens up to a queens size mattress. Views are most spectacular from the loft. The basement apartment has separate access and is where I might stay (if I am not away) when guests occupy the upper two floors. Guest AccessAs guests, you will have free run of the first and second floors of the house and 3 acres of land. There will be no access to the basement. The kitchen is stocked with spices and condiments for your use, as well as a coffee maker, regular and decaf coffee, tea bags and instant coffee. A grocery stop before getting to the house is a good idea to cover the essentials for your first few meals. You are welcome to use the washer and dryer. There is no internet connection; why not try unhooking from that world during your stay so you can tune into the beauty of the place? However, the connection is good to the services of all of the major internet providers in case you bring your mobile device or cell phone. Interaction with GuestsBefore you arrive I am happy to answer all your questions, normally within a few hours or quicker. Once you arrive you will have access to me via e-mail and phone, and , of course, in person if I am there. The NeighborhoodYou will be within half an hour from many beautiful "back to nature" opportunities, historic places, and various entertainment options. Access to the Appalachian trail is only 20 minutes from the house, as is the Blue Ridge Parkway offering many access points to scenic lookouts and hiking trails. Biking on the Blue Ridge Parkway is also a great experience. In the living room table you can find a great Blue Ridge Parkway hiking book which you can use to get ready for next day's hike. Wintergreen, a nearby mountain resort, with its spectacular golf course and ski resort, is also just 20 minutes from the house. I have been skiing at Wintergreen ever since I built the house in 2008, getting there is a lovely, enjoyable drive. Charlottesville and the University of Virginia are 30 minutes away (I work there and my travel time is 28 minutes) as is Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. The region offers a great variety of winery, brewery and distillery choices. You can find a grocery store, basic services, and a few small restaurants about four miles away in Nellysford. On Saturday mornings from May - October there is a farmers' market, with live country music, where you can buy fresh local produce, baked goods, various food items and local art. The house is secluded, but not totally isolated. It is is part of a 500 acre mountain community with about 50 houses nestled in the woods on hill sides, most of them far away from Rainbow Ridge Road (so you can hardly see any houses). Walking along the gravel roads, enjoying the spectacular views you might occasionally see a friendly walker saying hi as we all do there.

The NeighborhoodNelson County Virginia has been our playground for nearly three decades---and we feel almost spoiled with the beautiful nature, mountains, and friendly community. With the recent bubbling-up of three prize-winning brew pubs, two cideries, several wineries, two distilleries, and numerous restaurants---all within a 20 minute drive---our guests have so many choices. Getting AroundIt's really rural out here, so there's not much in the way of public transportation, though I'm hearing good reports about some new "driver services" that will get you SAFELY to-and-from the breweries, wineries, ciders and distilleries. Along with recommending folks arrive by car, cyclist-Martin suggests that the hard-core pedalers among you bring your bicycles for exhilarating rides in the mountains! Other Things to NoteOur premises are ideal for retreats, small weddings, reunions of all sorts, and groups of friends---OR just perfect as a get-away for an individual traveler. According to cyclists (from near and far), the Inn is especially suited for those who love tackling mountains and back-road adventures on 2-wheels!

There are some fantastic views and sunset spots that are only 2 miles from the trail head. In summer, hike to the slippery rocks in Stony Creek - only a 15 minute drive and 20 minute walk. Slip and slide on the natural water slide and splash into the tub. During the music festival season LOCK'N and the Festy are 30 minutes away in Arrington. We can arrange for a private yoga lesson or massages at the Yurt if you're interested. And so much more! We're working on a detailed book of what to do and see in the area that we'll leave in the yurt. In the meantime, we're happy to offer suggestions on what to do and see in the area. Getting AroundThere is no public transit, but there are services that will shuttle you around to wineries, breweries, and cideries. Other Things to NoteThe main road to the yurt is gravel and pretty bumpy. A high clearance vehicle is recommended but not necessary. Just take it slow and you should be fine. The yurt currently has no internet service but there is internet at a great coffee shop (Traeger Brothers) a short drive away. Or just unplug, it's good for the soul! The yurt has all the creature comforts you might want but keep in mind, it's still a tent. You will hear birds chirping, frogs and crickets in the summer, the sound of rain on the roof, the wind blowing, owls hooting at night, coyotes howling, and the occasional dog barking. For light sleepers (raises hand) we have provided a fan and a white noise machine. The weather can get pretty intense in our neck of the woods at times. The wind comes down off the Blue Ridge like a freight train during a storm. If you happen to be in the yurt during a storm, try to relax. It sounds worse than it actually is.
