Our vacation house, BLACK SAND COVE, has the FlipKey "Rated Excellent" badge, and won the "Top Vacation Rental" badge in 2012 and again in 2013. It's located is in a secluded part of the out-of-the-way island of Nevis. The house, just yards from the Caribbean sea, is set in an unique and extensive garden, which some guests insist is the most beautiful garden in the Caribbean. We emphasize on local plants and native species, and the uniqueness lies in great design, thanks to Julie Toll, the multi-award winner of many British garden shows. A broad wooden staircase takes you from the garden down to a small beach with soft, black sand. On our peaceful corner of the island, you'll hear only the sounds of nature: the wind in the banana trees, the birds, the crickets, and the waves on the shore.
Our West Indies-style house has a great kitchen, convenient for 2 or 3 people to cook together. You'll spend lots of time on the large screened porch facing the sea; you'll want to eat all your meals here, and relax here with a book or game in the evening. Behind the house is a patio with views of the volcano and other hills. The swimming pool has large, broad stairs, designed as a great place for parents and small children to enjoy the water. There are 2 bedrooms, a sleeping porch, and 3 baths - plus a sofabed in the living room. Our favorite place to refresh is the outdoor shower with the views of the gardens and the volcano. The high, vaulted ceilings, traditional wooden awnings, and ceiling fans maximize the cooling Atlantic breezes coming over the mountains behind you. The 2 bedrooms are air-conditioned for the warm summer nights. The built-in computer desk (with WiFi access for your laptop and other devices) offers an expansive view of the sea. Nevis is a small, off-the-beaten-track island, loved by those who enjoy nature, hiking, birding, and beach combing. The laid-back lifestyle on Nevis distinguishes it from our Caribbean islands‌.no stop lights or casinos here! Nevis fosters more tranquil pursuits, like our 360-degree views of sunrises and sunsets. It's hard to capture the scope and feel of the place in photos; I'm working on that with panoramic photos, which I'll post on the Black Sand Cove Facebook page. There you'll find lots more pictures of Nevis and of Black Sand Cove, with comments, recommendations, and photos from guests. You don’t need to be a Facebook participant; go there by putting this in your browser: facebook.com/blacksandcove.
On the same 8-acre property, we have a small cottage with its own entrance gate and parking area, very private and separate from the house. It has a queen-size bed, a sofabed, and well-organized kitchen and dining facilities, all in one room. Like the house, it has a lovely color scheme that complements the local art work on the walls. It also has complete laundry facilities and WiFi internet access. Though the cottage has no pool, there is a hot-tub nestled amid oleanders and bougainvillea, very private. Nevis is a small Caribbean island, rather undeveloped and off-the-beaten-track. Nature, hiking, swimming, birding, enjoying the rainforest and the fabulous views, and just relaxing‌.. these are popular activities. Nevis has lots of nice restaurants, but if you're looking for casinos, nightlife, and shopping, you need a different island. For a delightful natural environment, on a comparatively undeveloped island, we recommend Nevis!
One of our guests, who grew up on a nearby Caribbean island, declared our garden the most beautiful in the Caribbean. What makes it so special? We use simple plants - largely native species, local plants that thrive in the dry, sunny, seaside location, like aloes, agaves, frangipani, and crown flower. Native hardwoods including logwood, mahogany, and wild almond, as well as coconuts and royal palms: these are main features of the landscape. The principle reason for the garden's appeal is the inspired talent of Julie Toll, a well-known landscape designer based in Britain. Plus the setting itself is charming: sea in front, mountain behind. There's plenty to do on Nevis, but some of our guests tell us that once they get here, they often don't feel motivated to leave the premises. They'd rather just hang around and enjoy Black Sand Cove. If you go to the Black Sand Cove website, click on About, and then Beach and Gardens, you’ll find a link to an article about our garden from the British magazine House & Gardens, October 2011 issue.
