The SpaceIt's a roomy red sawmill that's 260 years old. There is wonderful light from windows set high and low. It's located across the garden from the big grist mill where we live, on two acres of beautiful gardens, creek and woods. Guest AccessThe sawmill is all yours; two private lockable entrances, parking space, private back porch that is draped with lilac, willow and dogwood trees, and green lawn privately behind that. Guests of ours can also enjoy a swim in nearby Queechy Lake in the summertime. Interaction with GuestsWe're right in the big grist mill next door and can help with anything; say hello as you go by or we'll leave you entirely private, as you prefer. If you'd like to see the giant beams and artefacts inside the big mill as well, just let us know and we'll try to make the place presentable. The NeighborhoodNew Lebanon, at the top of Columbia County, New York, is a gateway to the Berkshires. It's a funky town, not a Norman Rockwell town. Many people drive right through it to go north for antiquing or skiing, to take the mountain pass into Massachusetts or to pick up the nearby NY thruway. But it's a wonderful point of access. We're a great stop from which to explore the Hudson Valley or Berkshire towns, or stay for experiences right around here. Between June and October, check out Behold! New Lebanon, an innovative chartered museum without walls, that offers tours and discoveries in town every Saturday around topics on local rural life. Stop at Blueberry Hill cafe for coffee and something delicious, or at Mario's for a fancy meal. Go to Meissners on a Saturday at 5 for their antique auctions, where we've found astonishing values. The town is small, with just one stoplight...and that's a blinking one. But it has amazing history, such as the Great Stone Barn at the original headquarters of the Shakers at Mount Lebanon, and astonishingly beautiful viewscapes from the surrounding hills and trails. You'll find a lot of information about local options in our Guidebook. Getting AroundCar is the best way. We're perfectly positioned from every direction at the top of the Taconic parkway. We're a straight shot 3 hours north of NYC and 2 1/2 hours east of Boston. We share a hilly border with West Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Connect with bus in Pittsfield or Lenox, Massachusetts; we're also less than an hour south of Bennington, Vermont. You can also get to us by Amtrak, stopping at Albany, NY, or Pittsfield, MA, and then getting a cab. Albany International Airport is an easy forty minutes away. But please note if you arrive this way that you'll want a rental car for mobility. Other Things to NoteEven in midsummer, this area offers generally comfortable evening temperatures, but for the occasional night when it's hot, you'll find air conditioning available in the bedroom. Breezy high and low windows and overhead fans cool the rest of the house. Someone can sleep well on the comfy rollaway bed, too, or on the sofa bed, which has a soft mattress topper. People tell us that they like to know more about beds and linens, so here is a little detail. We use sheets with high thread counts and wash them in Seventh Generation natural detergent. Pillows and comforters are down-alternative. We use protective anti-allergen covers for pillows, and encase mattresses and boxspring too. The sawmill is a great retreat both for summer and winter, whether you prefer cozy quiet or action. We're perfectly positioned to take advantage of the Berkshires in all the ways you like, including so much fine music, theater, food, art and natural beauty that you can't possibly do it all justice no matter how hard you try. Ski trails at Jiminy Peak or Bousquet are just a half hour away. A summertime treat hidden nearby is Queechy Lake, with lifeguard and sandy shore, one of the cleanest and most delicious lakes in New York state. There are seven fine art museums within an hour's radius. When you're with us you're on a country road with black and white cows, but Albany, NY is just a half-hour away, and either Pittsfield, or Lenox, Massachusetts just 18 minutes away for anything you may need.

Home is close to Hancock Shaker Village and NYS border on 5+ acres, apple trees, meadow, woods, trail to year-around flowing stream, and gardens with Leutens bench for relaxing and meditating. Nearby Lenox, Great Barrington, and Pittsfield are teaming with year-around venue, theaters, playhouses, theater, botanical garden, and night life. Getting AroundMetro North train from Grand Central Station in NYC arrives every other hour from 6 AM to 10 PM into 55-minute-away Waissaic, New York. Busses from NYC, Boston and Albany arrive into nearby Pittsfield, with local bus service to final stop at Hancock Shaker Village--one mile north of our house. Car necessary otherwise. We are in a rural area 10-15 minutes from neighbouring towns, so taxis and Ubers are pricier. Let us know how we can help. It has also been a gambling house, roadhouse and in 1939 was raided by the Feds and seized $10,000 worth of gambling equipment. Rumor has it that it was possibly a stop for the Underground Railroad. In more recent years it was known as the Pillars Restaurant. The restaurant is now closed and We have turned it into our home. Large enough for weddings and gatherings. The SpaceFor its small size, the cottage has several discrete spaces. Downstairs is a bedroom with a queen size bed and two cozy chairs. A well-equipped kitchenette has a shiplap vaulted ceiling and a round table that seats four, plus an ample mudroom for jackets, skis, boots and fishing poles. An extra room is just big enough for a writing desk with a view of the orchard, and even to open up a rollaway bed, with a narrow bathroom next door. Up an amazing tiny enclosed staircase is an open loft space perfect for meditation, music, reading, privacy, or painting. This is an ideal spot for a weekend respite from the city, or as a base to explore the area. It calls to people working on creative projects, or those looking for a longer hiatus. It has all the important amenities, like good cell service, light, and wireless internet. It also offers quality linens and pillows, shampoos and soaps, nice china and good coffee, but no dishwasher and no tv. The doorways are narrow, the shower does a valiant job, and the upper loft space is only six feet tall. But there's lots of old wood and so much charm. Relax on the porch out front, or set up lunch at the bistro table and chairs on the grassy acre outside the back door. Some more features: even in midsummer, this area offers generally comfortable evening temperatures, but for the occasional night when it's hot, you'll find air conditioning available in the bedroom. People tell us that they like to know more about how we care for the beds and linens, so here is a little detail. We use sheets with high thread counts and wash them in Seventh Generation natural detergent. Pillows and comforters are down-alternative. We use protective anti-allergen covers for pillows, and encase mattresses and boxspring too. There's a chest of drawers downstairs, and a place for hangers on the back of the bedroom door. For longer stays, there's a full-size closet up in the loft. Guest AccessOur neighborhood used to be the center of town back when the old grist mill was in operation; now the modern town center with bank, post office and restaurants, is about 2 miles away. There are a handful of historic houses on our road. We live right across the way and can greet you, hand over your keys, and show you around when you arrive. You'll have front and back lockable doors and two parking spaces. We can also provide good local recommendations and are available in the event of any problem. Interaction with GuestsThe entire space is yours and you can exist in it perfectly privately. However, we're always happy to chat or wave when you pass by. The NeighborhoodThe Writer's Cottage is a great retreat both in summer and winter, whether you prefer a cozy break or search for culture and action. It's perfectly positioned for taking advantage of the Berkshires, including so much fine music, theater, food, art and natural beauty that you can't possibly do it all justice no matter how hard you try. In the winter, ski trails at Jiminy Peak or Bousquet are less than a half hour away, and Butternut is just a little farther. Hiking trails and conservancies abound. In the springtime, there's a wonderful range of gardens and emerging woodsy foliage. It's locavore heaven in the summer and fall. Another summertime treat hidden nearby is Queechy Lake, with lifeguard and sandy shore, one of the cleanest and most delicious lakes in New York state. Check out our online guidebook for a full listing of the places we love most around here for visit or a meal. There are seven fine art museums, eight theater companies, three Shaker villages and two orchestral venues within an hour's radius. We're a good base for visiting the Berkshire towns-- it takes about 20 minutes to get to Lenox, Pittsfield and West Stockbridge in Massachusetts, and it's the same quick trip over to the historic towns of Chatham, Austerlitz and Spencertown, New York. Getting AroundThis is a pretty rural area, so a car is key. We're on a country road with heritage cows grazing up the hill, but Albany, the capital of New York state, is just a half-hour away. We are 3 hours due north of New York City by car, 2 1/2 hours west of Boston, and less than an hour south of Bennington, Vermont. The Albany International Airport is an easy trip at 40 minutes away and the Amtrak station about 35 minutes. Car rental at either the airport or the train station is thankfully easy to arrange. Other Things to NoteNew Lebanon is a pretty funky town; it's not a Norman Rockwell town. There's only one stoplight, and that's a blinking one. There's no night life to speak of, and we lack a big grocery store. But the town has some great places to eat and a couple of good stores and a remarkable allotment of history, along with gorgeous hillside viewscapes. It's perfectly located for all kinds of travel and exploration-- or just a rural escape-- as so many of our airbnb guests have told us.

This beautiful, bright & sunny 3 bedroom home was built in 1997 and was completely refurbished in 2004 when my wife and I purchased it. This is not a 'rental' house (we use it as our family ski house all winter). It sits on 10 acres and is very private. Has outstanding views, an enormous yard (great for kids), and tastefully landscaped. The furnished screened in porch sits upon a very large wrap around deck to enjoy the views and beautiful summer nights in the Berkshires. There is a stream running along the entire property that is very relaxing to listen to at night. The proximity to the stream and woods also offers great exploring. Large open floor plan with living room and kitchen on first floor with an oversized stone floor-to-ceiling fireplace in the living room. All three bedrooms are on the second floor. The master bedroom has vaulted ceilings, master bath and a private deck overlooking the mountains. Master Bedroom; king bed (2nd floor) Guestroom #1; queen bed (2nd floor) Guestroom #2; full and twin beds (2nd floor) Whether you stay for the entire season or just a week you will find that the house is relaxing, clean and comfortable. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for considering our Berkshire home for your vacation. Keywords: House, mountain views, private setting, berkshires, tanglewood, hudson valley
