The SpaceIf you are looking for peace and quiet, this is the place. It's sometimes difficult to get people to move off the back porch, where they tend to park in one of the comfy rocking chairs, gaze at the pond, enjoy the ever-present breeze, breath the incredibly fresh air, and heave a sigh of contentment. It's also convenient to Round Top and associated venues. Guest AccessAll parts of the main house are accessible, including use of the washer-dryer, kitchen appliances (there is a shelf reserved for guest's food), internet access. Limited space is available in each of the bedroom closets. In the rare case that guests have livestock, there are 2 fenced pastures that can be used, one with an overhang shelter. Guest should feel free to wander about and enjoy the tranquility, sample whatever might be growing on trees or in the garden. Interaction with GuestsI'll be generally available and staying in the little cottage (a favorite getaway place for writers). Although I do sometimes have to take day trips, I'm always accessible by phone or email. I respect your privacy, so will not disturb you, but I have very much enjoyed interaction with my amazingly diverse and interesting guests! The NeighborhoodNew Ulm is a wonderful, friendly, very Texas town. If you need help with anything, just ask the first person you see. The town itself is small, but there is a "general store", aka Ace Hardware, where food essentials may be found. There are also a couple of good restaurants: the Texas Star Cafe, which served homey Texas-style food, and has terrific breakfasts. The Star is open for breakfast and lunch every day except Sunday, and is open for dinner on Fridays. Another restaurant, Tin Lizzie, is currently making its debut with a delicious variety of poorboys leaning towards Cajun/Creole, and dream-worthy desserts. It's currently open for extended lunch (11- 6pm) and will be adding dinner hours soon. There are many other restaurants in nearby towns (which tend to be 5-20 miles away). (See list in House Manual.) Getting AroundPark anywhere. There is no taxi service here, nor Uber. However, you can probably catch a ride on a tractor or Gator if the need arises. Other Things to NoteAlthough there isn't television service, there is access to movies, etc. via NetFlix. During certain time of the year, grass stickers and burrs abound. It is best to wear covered shoes if you plan to go wandering around, especially children. Likewise, the "lawn" is more like a pasture, so has the occasional gopher hole or armadillo burrow so care should be taken when zipping around the place.

The Space--The space is tiny, self-contained, and private, though just a short stroll from the main farmhouse. It has essentials for cooking, eating, sleeping and deep contemplation--it's more like ship's quarters than a luxury suite . The "bathroom" is a European-style screened toilet, and the cottage sink serves both kitchen and bath, but there is an outdoor private shower (with hot water). --the mini-kitchen includes a microwave, toaster oven, electric teapot, coffee pot (automatic, French press, or Aeropress, your choice), and an induction single burner cooktop with appropriate cookware. There is also a little grill outside. --The queen bed is comfortable (memory foam). --There is an awesome hammock outside for stargazing. --A firepit (and wood) is available for roasting marshmallow or gazing into the flames EXCEPT during times of drought when a burn ban is in effect. --Coffee, tea, and filtered water are always provided. Snacks and breakfast goodies (homemade granola, fruit, coffee cake) may also show up if scheduling permits (or if there is a special request). Guest Access--Guests have complete and exclusive access to the cottage. As well, guests are invited to wander around the property and pilfer the garden behind the cottage for veggies or herbs in season. --The main house is private, but, as mentioned above, it has a nice tub and shower, which can be made available to guests upon request. Interaction with Guests--The guest cottage will be open when you arrive, and there is a key hanging near the sink. At the end of your stay, just put the key in the same place, and leave the cottage unlocked as you found it or give it directly to me. --I will usually be around if you need assistance with anything. However, depending on your time of arrival, I may be en route. I love visiting with guests, but will completely respect your privacy. I'm also very happy to share my (so far limited, but growing) knowledge of the area--just ask! The Neighborhood--This is seriously TEXAS. Small town, big heart. New Ulm has a couple of restaurants. The most popular local stop is the Texas Star, which offers terrific breakfasts, Texas-style lunch, and dinner on selected evenings. In town is also a new cafe, Tin Lizzie, serving Cajun-style poorboys and amazing desserts, with extended lunch hours (11-6 pm) and (rumor has it) dinner hours will be added soon. --More on restaurants: Down the road in Fayetteville (approx. 8 miles from the cottage) there are several more restaurants, included the recommended Joe's Place. Just a jot further down the road, you will find numerous restaurants in Roundtop. In the other direction, Columbus also has quite a few restaurants, including some outstanding German food (Schobels). --If you want to cook, the Hometown Hardware store in New Ulm actually carried food basics, so if you need milk, cheese, eggs, butter, bacon, potatoes and other things (including frozen dinners) this would be your first stop. North on Hwy 109 is a more general general store in Industry, Texas, which carries everything from fantastic BBQ, rubber boots, and guinea hens to milk, eggs, yogurt, and avocados (and everything in between). And they serve it up with a smile. --If you must have a supermarket, there are both HEB and Brookshire Brothers in Columbus (15 miles). --If you find yourself here in April, the New Ulm Art Festival may be in full swing. Some wonderful art by young, local artists. --And of course, there are nearby international venues for antique shopping in Roundtop, Warrenton, and Wynedale. Getting AroundThere is no transportation but your own. Other Things to Note--There is an abundance of wildlife around (if you listen, in the evening you can hear the coyote chorus), and millions of stars in the night sky. Guests should feel free to wander around, even at night. --That said, covered footwear is encouraged--stickers do find their way onto the property, and, as this is the country, various other less-than-welcome inhabitants of the Texas countryside could be present. Oddly (and happily), mosquitoes seemed to have decided to give our place a miss. --There are two cats (nominally) on the premises, one of which you'll probably never see (shy). The other feels it's her duty to greet guests. --It is generally blissfully quiet around here, HOWEVER, there is a train track down the road aways, so the occasional train horn is heard (but quickly goes away). --If you decide to bathe in the big house, please note that there is plenty of hot water, but it takes a little time to find its way from the well-house to the shower.

The SpaceThe space is the entire upstairs of a newly-built farmhouse on a working cattle ranch. There are two light-filled spacious bedrooms, each with queen-sized bed, and one demi-room, which has a twin bed with an additional trundle bed, all with vaulted ceilings and overhead fans. There is also a full bath in the suite for guests' convenience. The house is situated on 100+ acres in the middle of Texas bluebonnet country, with stunning views all around. Guest AccessGuests have full access to the upstairs and the back patio (which has a large gas grill) and are encouraged to wander around the grounds INSIDE the wooden fence. With advance notice, limited use of the kitchen is available. Guests are requested to NOT enter the livestock working area, for safety reasons. Interaction with GuestsI will generally be available to meet guests and answer questions, and will always be available by phone or text. The NeighborhoodThis area was settled by Germans in (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). Many "vintage" people can still speak fluent German; however, the younger generations did not acquire this home-grown knowledge. The country landscape is rolling hills covered with live oaks and cedar trees. This scenic country side brings out on weekends many bicyclist and walkers. The house is on a gravel road removed one mile from the paved road. Most side roads, read short-cuts, are gravel covered ways. Neighbors are spread out. A few are within a short distance, a third of a mile, while others are farther away, a mile and more. Closest grocery stores are five miles from the house: The Lindemann Store (Est. 1884) in Industry and Heinsohn's in Frelsburg. Personally, I buy my groceries at H.E.B. in Columbus or Brenham, 18 and 20 miles away respectively. Columbus population is approximately three thousand while Brenham is ten times larger. Both offer nice selection of restaurants as well as plays, musicals and other art events. The County Court House in Columbus is worth visiting. It was recently restored following original construction plans. Do go to see the Court Room on the third floor with beautiful painted glass tiles covering the ceiling. There is also the town of New Ulm (Population 200). It offers three different eating establishments, Ernie's gas station with a large supply of cold beer and a building material store. It also has a weekly newspaper, The New Ulm Enterprise, which has been published continuously since 1910. Getting AroundUnfortunately, there is no public transportation in this area. Car rentals are available in Brenham and Columbus. In addition to places named above, it is worthwhile to visit La Grange (25 miles). It offers many boutique stores on the Court House square and a first class restaurant. While driving to La Grange, you ought to stop in Round Top, well known for classical music performances, or Winedale known for Shakespeare festival, or, if time is right, at Warrenton for Antiques jamboree. All three places are within a few miles apart. If BBQ is your delight, there is Mikeska's in Columbus, Nathan's in Brenham, Prause's on the square in La Grange, Peter's in Ellinger and J&J Pavilion in New Ulm every Saturday. Other Things to NoteThis is the deep country, and guests should note several things: • The house is on well water, so please be conservative in water use. • Similarly, the waste system is a septic tank, so please be careful not to put foreign materials down the sink or toilets. • Again, this is the country, and there is ample wildlife around, most of which is benign, but please take reasonable precautions when wandering around.

My wife and I have now completed the four year restoration of a 1890 German Farm House just outside of New Ulm, Texas. It is two miles from New Ulm, 16 miles from Fayetteville, and about 20 miles from Round Top. The country house is nestled in the woods on 19 acres with a pond and walking bridges, walking trails and lots of wildlife. The house, 2000 square feet, has nine rooms and a porch with rocking chairs overlooking a pond, and includes a large master bedroom with King bed, and two additional bed rooms, each with two Twin beds, a complete kitchen and spacious living room. Antique furniture is in each room. The house is quite large. Located just 20 miles from Round Top (and nearby Warrenton and Carmine) and the semi-annual Texas Antique Festival, 30 miles from La Grange and the MS 150 Fair Grounds, 6 miles from Industry (Lindemann General Store and Dollar General) - the MS 150 passes right through Industry, 22 miles from Bellville (the MS 150 stops there for lunch), 8 miles from The Falls Golf Course and restaurant, 2 miles from New Ulm, the Texas Star Cafe, Hometown Hardware, 14 miles from Fayetteville and several restaurants, 18 miles from Columbus and lots of stores and restaurants, 22 miles from Brenham and the home of Blue Bell Ice Cream, 9 miles from Cat Spring and Carol's Kitchen (great fine dining restaurant), 7 miles from Frelsburg and the famous 120 year old Hiensohn's Country Store.

We have owned this little slice of heaven since 2000 and have used it for many different purposes. You will love it, too, as a weekend retreat for you, your family and your friends. Don ‘t forget church groups, bunko groups, cycling teams, PTA groups, college reunions, craft groups …we’ve had them all! Have your Aggies and your Longhorns meet you in the middle – might be the only common ground they have. It’s a great home base for the Round Top Antiques Fair in April and October, training rides for the MS 150, as well as the Saturday night during the MS150 itself. There is year-round antiquing in the surrounding towns. The four bedrooms feature King/Twin, Queen/Twin, three twins, and two twins. The King and Queen rooms have private baths, while the upstairs twin rooms share a bath. The whole house offers charm in its original wooden and beadboard walls, long-leaf pine floors, and old wavy glass windows. But the modern amenities are what you’d expect at a premium vacation home – central air and heat, stainless steel appliances, gas cook-top, upgraded bedding and pillows, satellite TV, DVD player, outdoor kitchen with granite counters and stainless grill and griddle. The professional décor is quaint, with antiques mixed with modern comforts. Inside dining offers seating for 12 at two tables, plus outside dining at the huge farm table in the outdoor kitchen. The best part might be the wraparound porch with ten rocking chairs, 1950s glider, and wicker club chairs. Or the six Adirondacks on the patio beside the outdoor kitchen. Lots of room to work on projects or just sit and soak up the central Texas views. We know you'll love it as much as we do! Keywords:
