Guest AccessYou'll have full access to the house, except for a locked closet where we store some of our things. Interaction with GuestsYes, we are here to help during your stay via phone. The NeighborhoodSo many things to do (or not do) in the Greater Lake Sunapee Area. Activities in Summer/Spring/Fall: There are some tennis courts where you turn onto our street. Also, there is a little sandy beach with a swimming platform 4 houses past our house (No glass or alcohol allowed at beach). There are plenty of floatation “noodles” you can use in the closet under the stairs. The Chalk Pond water is very clean for swimming. For a quick walk, you can take the one mile loop around the pond or set out on the Audubon trails you can pick up by making a right on Chalk Pond Rd. and finding the trailhead on your left. Feel free to use our 2-man kayak (two adult and one child life vest are hanging up in the closet of the twin bedroom). Bring along your fishing pole if you want to catch sunnies and perch in Chalk Pond. You can buy a container of night crawlers from the gas stations in New London or Newbury. As you look towards the island from the house, there is a good fishing spot to the right of the island. Motor boats can put in on nearby Lake Sunapee's public launches (see: (URL HIDDEN) If you have the time, there are cute little shops to browse (Artisan’s is one of my favorites) in New London. In the summer, be sure to check out what is playing at the New London Barn Playhouse (production changes every two weeks, see: (URL HIDDEN) The kids love it too, and you can meet the cast outside right after the performance. On Wednesday evenings from 7-9 pm on the Lake Sunapee harbor green there are free concerts during the summer. Fireworks at Sunapee Harbor on or around July 4th every year (URL HIDDEN) There are also several public golf courses nearby. (see: (URL HIDDEN) Mount Sunapee (10 minutes away, (URL HIDDEN) has an ever-expanding Adventure Park complete with zip lines, downhill mountain bike trails, aerial challenge course, Frisbee golf, and miniature golf that you might want to check out. You can hike a 20-30 minutes loop thru woods down to Lake Sunapee at "The Fells." Head south from the house on Route 103A (there is a small fee to park at The Fells). A more ambitious but terrific climb would be up Mount Kearsarge (3 hours roundtrip). Mount Sunapee has some shorter hikes, the one to the summit/Lake Solitude is a favorite of ours. Some rainy day activities would include a small Native American Museum (in Warner, NH; (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)) or the Montshire Science Museum (in Norwich, VT; (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)). Other possible day trip destinations include: Dartmouth. NH (40 minutes)---Hood Art Museum, Hopkins Center for the Arts, various athletic events when school is in session (ticket office (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)). It’s just fun to walk around the college town and hit the book and coffee shops. Woodstock, VT (60 minutes)--shopping, raptors museum, gorge St. Gaudens, Cornish, NH (50 minutes)--sculptor’s retreat, beautiful grounds with many of his works; be sure to see the Civil War relief; there is also an artist-in-residence that you can observe. Seasonal. Outlet Shopping, Tilton, NH (30 minutes)--Coach, J. Crew, etc. Activities in Winter: Mount Sunapee (URL HIDDEN) is an excellent resort for skiing/riding and consistently receives Ski Magazine awards for snowmaking and grooming. Be sure to check their website beforehand for lift ticket deals. You can rent equipment either at the mountain or at Bob Skinner’s (sometimes a quicker in-and-out) located right outside the mountain entrance. For a small fee, you can access 10 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails off of Route 11 near the country club (about 10 minutes from the house). There are ice skates available for rent in New London at Village Sports ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)). If the ice on the pond is not good, use the public skating rink in New London, complete with hockey nets, warming hut, as well as lights for night skating. For a some snowshoeing or winter hiking, use the Audubon trails right around the corner. Pick up the trailhead by heading back toward the tennis courts and making a right at the stop sign onto Chalk Pond Rd. Look for a sign soon on your left. Food Shopping and Restaurants In New London (10 minutes away), there is a Hannaford grocery store, pharmacy, and liquor store. There's also Market Basket at exit 9 off I-89 (15 minutes away). The fridge will have basic condiments.  There is a gas grill on the deck, with a spare tank. Newbury has an Italian deli (Marzelli's) that has a case full of frozen dinners if you want to pick a lasagna up on the way home from the mountain. There are restaurants near the Mountain, and in New London (see: (URL HIDDEN) and Newbury. Other Things to NoteSo much to do in the greater Lake Sunapee Area. Here's some info for planning your stay. Autumn, of course, brings us some of the most beautiful scenery in the states. New England foliage in October is a must-see. New this summer, 2012, Sunapee has opened an exciting adventure park with zip lines, ropes course and Segway tours. Call ahead for reservations - they book quickly! 603.763.3500. History Buffs: This stone barn sits on property originally owned by John Hay. Hay was Abraham Lincoln's personal secretary and Secretary of State under Teddy Roosevelt. In the early 1900's Sunapee was a bustling vacation destination and Mr. Hay built a gorgeous home here, complete with spectacular gardens and stunning views. His son took over the property and in 1910 built a gentleman's barn made of stone, which housed sheep, cows and goats. We purchased the property in 2003 and turned this beloved (but unused) barn into a retreat. The remnants of another old barn's stone foundation is now a large sunken courtyard surrounded by birch trees... perfect for playing croquet, snoozing in the hammock, or enjoying a picnic. The kids love to pick flowers in the meadow, swing on the zip line, climb huge boulders, make forts along the stone walls, build fairy houses in the woods, search for wildlife - and we have plenty! Black bears, fox, porcupines, a fisher cat, turkeys, deer and a ground hog! The Latest Updates: Sunapee View Bed & Breakfast is accepting bookings! Just next door to the stone barn is the home formerly occupied by the caretaker of The Hay Estate. This lovely spot has been nursed back to life by my parents, George and Linda West who are enjoying their retirement in great style up on Mount Sunapee. The Pacific Northwest style home is now a modern B&B with spectacular views. This is not your typical chintz-covered Vicotrian inn. Expect bright colors and modern styling. Enjoy breakfast by a cozy fire while watching the morning skiers shoosh down the slopes. Or, in the summer, lounge on the patio under a shady beech tree overlooking the apple orchard. My Mom is a gourmet cook who is famous for her pies, sauces, hearty stews and casseroles made from fruits and veggies grown in her backyard gardens. George is a born entertainer - full of jokes and beautiful songs. He is a Doo-Wap singer and performs a fantastic version of 'Still of the Night'. VIP, linens are the responsibility of the guests.
