The Old Rectory is a very fine Georgian grade II*country house. It is set in grounds of about one and a half acres with large lawns and flower gardens to the east and south. Beyond the gardens is a beautiful valley with views to the sea cliffs and downland. The decor of the house is in keeping with its period and we have tried to marry comfort with the atmosphere of a traditional country rectory. The building lends itself to weekend houseparties in a genuine and unspoilt Dorset village. Both William Barnes and Thomas Hardy were regular visitors to Symondsbury and we like to feel that they would be pleased to see how familiar the house has remained. The house has most of its original features including flagstone floors, open fireplaces, oak and pine floorboards, baize door coverings and a fine central staircase ascending through three floors. The beds all have duvets, pillows and linen. Children are of course very welcome. Catering for house parties can be arranged if required, with exceptionally good local catering organisations, one of which was started by a chef from The River Cafe and Moros Restaurant. There are a number of good supermarkets in Bridport and the Tesco's in nearby Dorchester will deliver.

The SpaceThis 17th century farmhouse is in a totally isolated position with views across the Jurassic Coast to the sea. Guest AccessGuests will have access to the entire house with the exception of two locked store rooms. The kitchen is for cooks: well-stocked with state-of-the-art equipment including a 3.4m table, wood-fired built-in brick oven, Lacanche gas/electric oven, and various modern amenities, including a Nespresso coffee machine, juicer, sous vide, K-mix, bread machine, ice maker, and outside barbecue. Interaction with GuestsThe owners are not available during bookings. A housekeeper/ cleaner/ babysitter is, however, available on request at a cost of £13 per hour, paid locally in cash. The NeighborhoodWest Dorset is a popular holiday area for families. Within an hour's walk of the house is the newly renovated Anchor Inn at Seatown, which overlooks a beautiful stony beach popular in summer for barbecues and swimming. Chef Mark Hix presides over one of the best seafood restaurants in the country, at Hix Oyster & Fish House a 10-minute drive away in the Regency Town of Lyme Regis. The Seaside Boarding House is another excellent place to eat, at Burton Bradstock, which is a 20-minute drive away. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage HQ is under 10 minutes away, close to Lyme, making this one of the gourmet capitals of the West Country. Within two miles of the house is an honest local farm shop, Felicity's, on the A35. In the market town of Bridport, you can browse among bric-a-brac and secondhand bookshops. The Saturday market here, with various streetfood stalls, draws people from far afield. There are numerous walks, all accessible without getting into a car, including a dramatic three-hour route over the UNESCO-protected Golden Cap, a 45-minute circle of the ancient hillfort of Hardown behind the house, and a four-hour circuit over Stonebarrow with far-reaching views out over The English Channel. Most people, however, won't want to go far, despite the lures of mackerel fishing, antique shopping in Honiton, or paddleboarding off the beach at Seaton. The point of this well-loved home is the complete seclusion, with not another light in view. Getting Aroundue Other Things to NoteThe farm is down a long muddy track. We would recommend driving slowly, and not bringing a Porsche, Lotus or Maserati.

Other Things to NoteLower Atrim Farm was a working dairy farm until 2004 when Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall rented the outbuildings to test a business venture called River Cottage HQ. After a successful TV series based on setting up a smallholding around a cottage in Dorset he made a follow up series 'Beyond River Cottage' which was filmed in the barn and surrounding land. The business model was successful and a permanent River Cottage HQ was set up between nearby Lyme Regis and Axminster. The land at Lower Atrim Farm is now used to support a small beef herd with different feed crops grown each year. Occasionally some of the fields are also used to graze sheep. It is a tranquil place, far from the noise of city life. This has been the Byrne family home for twenty years and we hope you love it as much as we do.
