The SpaceThe house was originally built in 1804, rebuilt in 1854, and constantly under renovation from 1966 (when I acquired it) until the present day. It was a one-room schoolhouse for over a hundred years. It sits on the corner of Bennett Street and another dead end road which goes into Whiteface Intervale, which was once described by Robert Frost as the most beautiful spot in New Hampshire. Guest AccessThe apartment does not have a kitchen of its own, but guests have privileges to the host's kitchen, which adjoins the quest quarters. Interaction with GuestsI have lived off and on in the area for many years and will be able to direct guests to quite a few spots off the main tourist track. For guests staying only a day or two, I am happy to make breakfast from my own stores. Longer term guests must fend for themselves (I will provide shelf and frig space). The NeighborhoodThe neighborhood is very rural New England. The main activity in the Whiteface Intervale area is hiking up the several trails that go to the top of Mt. Whiteface. There is a well known swimming hole nearby (The Pothole, one of Life Magazine's 10 best swimming holes in America awhile back) on the aptly named Cold River. Rte 113A makes for some very scenic biking, passing another picturesque intervale (Wonalancet) on its way to Tamworth Village, home of the Barnstormers, the oldest summer theater in America (1931). A little further away in another direction is Squam Lake, where "On Golden Pond" was filmed. Other Things to NoteGuests may park an RV or pitch a tent on other property I own, right in the Intervale itself ($25/night). Guaranteed bear/moose/deer sightings not included.

This is a very special, peaceful place to spend a week--unlike the crowded, noisy waterfront properties listed at most real estate agents. The cabin has a 270 degree pond view with two docks, a canoe and sailfish. And it is among the most affordable on the pond. It offers vacationers the best of both worlds: privacy and gorgeous views, a pond with no motorboats, with a real wilderness feel to it and abundant wildlife--yet a short drive from Boston and close to major tourist attractions and outlet shopping as well as some of the best hiking, biking, fishing and outdoor recreation in New England. It's been in our family for decades, and we try to maintain a family feel to our rental of it. The ideal tenant is not looking for the typical 'DVR in every room' rental, but something that is a throwback to a simpler time. People return year after year. One third of rent is required upon signing of contract. Balance due on first day. Nearest Airport : Manchester, NH airport at 75 Miles Nearest Motorway : Rte. 25 and Rte. 16 at 8 Miles Nearest Beach : small public beach on pond at 1 Miles Nearest Golf : Public courses: Indian Mound Golf Course, Ossipee, at 7 Miles Area boasts everything from Barnstormers Theater to trout fishing, with many nearby AMC hiking trails in the surrounding White Mountains. Great biking trails as well. Sandwich itself has Bearcamp River Trail, Sandwich Notch waterfall, classic New England village charm, antique, artisan, and craft stores. Bear Camp Pond is secluded and quiet, with motorboats forbidden, protected loon nesting site, beaver, otter, moose and other birds and wildlife. Fishing for pickerel, perch, sunfish, bluegills. Perfect for kayak, canoe and sailfish. Small sandy public beach. Most tenants like the seclusion and privacy of Bearcamp, but for those inclined to explore, there is world class shopping in outlet stores in North Conway, restaurants, golf, tennis, water sports, and other traditional tourist attractions in nearby Squam Lake and Winnipisaukee area.
