You can be as private or involved as you like! The NeighborhoodGlen Innes is in the heart of New England. It is known as Celtic Country, after the district's first settlers, and retains a strong Celtic influence today. The Celtic heritage is cherished by today's Glen Innes citizens - so much so that a public-spirited group established the Australian Standing Stones, a megalithic array like those around which the ancient Celts danced. They are unique in the southern hemisphere and officially recognised as the national monument to Australia's Celtic pioneers. The Stones are the venue for the annual Australian Celtic Festival held on the first weekend in May. Glen Innes has a strong agricultural industry, with the local Show taking place in mid February, drawing many visitors from surrounding areas as well as further afield. A mining boom in the mid 1800's brought significant wealth and prosperity to the town, and this is reflected in the quality and style of many buildings still standing in the CBD today. Weekends are filled with parties and visitors are always more than welcome. Turtle Beach is the home of the leather back turtles and their nesting site. A truly magical sight to see them descend on to the beach to lay their eggs. This usually occurs late February early March. Be careful not to get scared as they are the last of the dinosaur species and are rather large.
