You will have a fantastic experience living and studying here. Over the last 10 years I've hosted students and visitors from around the world, countries like Venezuela, Korea, Brazil, Spain, Africa, Japan, Turkey, and Italy just to name a few. And, I must say it's always nice when my homestay guests return home and refer us to others. Mine is a home away from home, peaceful, comfortable and offers space for individual or group study. Tutoring and counseling is also available. We love to laugh, enjoy movies, live music, theater, games and other activities, and have just included a billiards room on the lower level of our home. We're Organo Gold coffee distributors and also enjoy energy work (reiki). We live in a large 8 bedroom single family Victorian home in historic Oak Park, one of the oldest suburbs of Chicago and once the home of the celebrated architect Frank Lloyd Wright and renowned author Ernest Hemingway. Oak Park is a lovely, warm, and diverse community full of tree-lined streets, small shops, and restaurants, just 15 minutes from Down Town Chicago. Your stay comes with wifi, washer dryer, bicycles, you have the option of requesting a single or shared room, with meals or no meals. Feel free to email us if you have questions or special needs. We look forward to communicating with you and hope to see you soon!

The SpacePlease read each section of the listing. Our home is great for the independent traveler. We have a self check in enabling you to arrive at your convenience anytime after 4 pm on the date of your reservation. Please read the house rules. We are a very environmentally conscious home. This shared room has a mini fridge and is located on the second floor close to the bathroom. There is a shared microwave and cold water cooler located on the first floor. It accommodates 2 comfortably. I can add an air mattress on the floor for the third person but it will require me to move the desk over making it look a bit odd while still being comfortable. It also has a loveseat. It does have a TV with hdmi cord so you can hook it up to your computer. We have dogs and cats. If you have any allergies or sensitivities, or even think you might have some, this is not the house for you. The dogs do live with the hosts in a private area. You will encounter the indoor/outdoor cats Hector and Elizabeth. They are never allowed in the bedrooms. Up to 4 rooms are available (which can be viewed under listings). There are times when the house is full of people and others when there might be only a few. During high season (summer, Lollapalooza for example) the house may be very busy giving you the opportunity to meet a lot of new people. A coin laundromat is about 7 minutes away- Just one train stop over. You can walk it too. Kitchen unavailable due to local laws and regulations. We are just a 3 minute walk to the Blue Line train. Please note that because we are so close to the train, you will hear some noise. This is the price we pay for this amazing convenience. This is the train that takes you directly to O'Hare airport and also into downtown Chicago in about 17 minutes. To come from Midway you would take the Orange Line and switch for the Blue Line at Van Buren and continue on. It's also a 5 minute drive to the 290 on ramp. We are very convenient to all the attractions such as the Sears "Willis" Tower, Millenium Park, Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, Museum of Science and Industry, the Art Institute, Lincoln Park Zoo, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (with the free flying butterflies. Best nature museum and I've been to many) and Navy Pier, just to name a few (and that's really just a few. There are so many more things to do!) We are walking distance to the Sugar Beet, an awesome public co-op. It is a bit further than the Jewel and CVS (which is about 5 blocks) but if you wanted to Uber it, my guess is it would only be a few dollars. It's the only place I shop. Love it. Next door to the Jewel is a Budget/Avis car rental for those times you just want to drive around. I can get you free parking for up to 30 days. We are around the corner from Yoga Trek (has drop in classes), Val's Halla records (if you're into music, this is a must see place) some great restaurants, Italian and The Buzz Cafe (great free range beef burger, gluten free, organic, great coffee) for eclectic fare, and just one train stop away from Brazilian, American, more Mexican food, Hole in the Wall for ice cream (yum) and a Pans, a small family owned grocery store. A laundry is next to the Brazilian restaurant. Don't forget to try the passion fruit mousse - delicious! (I mean really delicious) For the architecture buff, Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio is located here in Oak Park along with many of his buildings. Guided tours are available. It's also the birthplace of Ernest Hemingway All reservations must go through AIRBNB including last minute reservations. No local resident rentals please. Please do not ask for an exception. When corresponding, please offer the password, "Al was a chicken" so I know that you have fully read this description. Please do ask any questions you can think of. Thanks so much! Interaction with GuestsOur house is great for the independent traveler. We have a great self check in system so you can arrive at your convenience at anytime after 4 pm on the date of your reservation. Our family lives in a separate part of the house. There are times when I will be around all the time and others when you might never see me. If you're looking for a place to rest and not a lot of host contact, this is a great place. If you want heavy host involvement and social gatherings, this home would not meet your expectations. However, I am able to be reached at all times by text. The NeighborhoodWe are located in a very safe area known as the Arts District of Oak Park and just 7 miles to downtown. A wonderful artsy vibe is what you will find in this neck of the woods. We are around the corner from great restaurants, shops, art galleries and a rockin' hairstylist for those who want to try something cutting edge. There is a fantastic beading store, Bead in Hand, for those who'd like to explore this art and drop in yoga classes at Yoga Trek. Val's Halla! A vinyl legend around the corner from me. If you're a music lover than you must visit Val at her shop. Getting AroundWe are located just a 2-3 minute walk to the blue line train. You can actually see the entrance from our front door. The SpaceThis 1920's vintage 3 flat building is a relaxation zone. Located on the first floor, it is comfortable, clean and inviting. Perfect for the guest who likes calm. The room is located off of the kitchen and is very private. It has a twin bed, night stand, dresser/desk and wardrobe. A coin operated washer and dryer, located in the basement, is available for use. The room can accommodate two people with a blow up mattress, but it will be tight. If you are just looking for a place to sleep this will work. We are centrally located in Oak Park. Very close to the Hemingway House and Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. There are numerous parks and restaurants within walking distance to enjoy during your stay. Transportation is about a 15 minute walk to either the Blue Line or Green Line trains (we Chicagoans call it an El or the subway). Both take you directly to downtown Chicago and the Blue Line takes you straight into O'Hare Airport. It takes about 8 minutes by car to the 290 on ramp to downtown Chicago or out to the western suburbs. Downtown Chicago offers a bounty of things to do and visit: museums, Millennium Park, Navy Pier, and the Shedd Aquarium - just to name a few sites, and don't forget the theater. I have two dogs who live in my unit and sometimes they have visitors, so there may be a time when more than one dog is in the unit. Both dogs are friendly and when I am gone they are usually in their respective rooms, so coming and going is no problem. This is a no-smoking environment but smoking is allowed outside. A restaurant recommendation, directions to the nearest bookstore, or just a request to borrow a needle and thread...just ask! We are a text away! The NeighborhoodOak Park is an inclusive community and very proud of its diversity. Ours is a family-friendly area that is quiet and safe. The neighborhood is comfortable, great for walking, with beautiful homes and mature trees. We've lived in Oak Park for 11 years and wouldn't go anywhere else. Getting AroundThe apartment is just three short blocks from the Ridgeland CTA green line station, which takes you to downtown Chicago in just 15-20 minutes. Additionally, if you need the blue line, Metra, or the Eisenhower expressway (290), those are very close as well. We are also just a leisurely walk from downtown Oak Park. Other Things to NoteThis apartment is a beautiful example of the early 20th century Chicago style two-flat. So, though it's been updated several times, there are some quirks you may (or may not) be inclined to love as much as we do. So, I present to you: The charms of an old house. * The hardwood floors are occasionally creaky. * The heat is radiant (and super cozy). * The room sizes are of that era. This means the living areas can entertain 30, but the bathroom---probably only one. * You'll see amazing sunrise light coming through the living room windows. And amazing sunsets from the back. If you are a vampire, you should look elsewhere. ;) This home is representative of Chicago, and more importantly Oak Park, and all its charms. It's beautiful, and we love it here, and though you may only stay a few days, we trust you will be captivated as well. Please note: while we are only ten minutes away from downtown Chicago, we are not in Chicago proper--we are the first suburb on the western border. The city of Chicago is a big place; one that would take two hours to traverse from the far north side to the far south side. If there is somewhere in Chicago you are looking to be near, please first ask us if it is close by. It's a big city! Please note that the security deposit is NOT held from your account prior to or during your stay and is not a charge or authorization.
