The SpaceGorgeous Historic Victorian property with a location where convenience is second to none. You'll be steps from BART, nightlife, restaurants, etc. most downtown living is in a condo or high rise, this is one of very few actual homes left in downtown that has survived earthquakes, fires and major development. You'll be staying in the rear where you'll enjoy private access, a landscaped patio, views of the city hall clock tower which lights up at night, although you are staying in a historic property- it has every modern feature and functionality. The couch is actually a full size futon which can be used for sleeping. Guest AccessYou have full access to everything in the unit. I do not live in the space so there are no personal effects, everything in the unit is for the enjoyment of my guests. You can use the patio outside, every dish, towel, soap, and eat all the food in pantry if you choose to. Interaction with GuestsWe can interact as much or as little as you like. If you need anything you shouldn't hesitate and I'll do my best to accommodate you. I will respect your privacy and schedule, so I'll never initiate the stop and chat when we cross paths. The NeighborhoodThe location has a big upside. It's right in Downtown Oakland and the price is a good value compared to nearby hotels. 5 minute walk from the BART,10-15 minute walk from Uptown, Old Town, Chinatown, and Jack London Square. There's a ton to do close by.
Walk 5 minutes to BART station and you’ll be a 15 minute ride away from San Francisco. You can actually get BART at the SF airport, and end up 5 minutes walking from our front door. During the day you’ll enjoy the hustle and bustle the working crowd heading into the City, State and Federal buildings. Thanks to these major municipals building there are tons of coffee shops and great lunch spots within 5 minutes walking (Starbucks, Peets Coffee, Jamba Juice, Bagel Street Café to name a few). There is also a corner store on the same street that literally has everything. At night you’re 5 – 10 minutes walking or a $6 UBER/ LYFT away from bars, restaurants, music and art venues of Uptown, Downtown, Oldtown, & Jack London Square.
This is a downtown urban area, lots of noise associated with it, buses, cars, a busy fire station within 2 blocks. Properties are built on zero lot lines so you'll hear the neighbors in the building to the rear on their patio at night and early morning, sometimes all night.
You'll also see bums hanging around as this is downtown, they're harmless but unsightly and often loud as they argue amongst themselves. If you're a light sleeper, this is NOT the place for you. No guest has EVER been mugged, harmed, car broken into etc. The 23-30 year old demographic usually love this building and area. If you're older than that, there is probably just too much excitement around here for you to enjoy your stay.
There are half million dollar condo’s right across the street, and they've paid lots of money despite these bums sitting on their doorsteps and being loud all hours of the day and night. The Downtown Marriott is 5 blocks away, triple the price, and you’ll deal with the same issues. The state building, federal building, and City of Oakland offices and City Hall, are directly across the street, the majority of people with a government jobs in Oakland have adjusted to the everyday occurrences with the neighborhood. This location has a huge upside however there is a trade off, you either want to be close to BART in the heart of the heart of Downtown and are willing to stomach this, or you don’t. Getting AroundThis location is best suited for people who will be using public transportation during their stay. The typical person who lives in this building long term does not have a car, it’s too close to BART and parking costs.
UBER/ LYFT is so cheap from this location, I can’t imagine any trip in the area being more than $7. BART is 5 minutes walking,
The neighborhood has a 24 hour safety patrol which you can use to walk to home, to BART, or to a bar and whatnot at night. It’s really easy to use, you just call them and they’ll meet you in matter of minutes ( I have their pocket cards inside of the unit so you can keep with you). Honestly this service isn’t necessary as no one will bother you, it’s just a service that the downtown business owners decided they wanted to pay for to encourage people to stay out later and patronize their new bars and restaurants. They know that many recent transplants to Oakland aren’t as comfortable and the area takes some getting used to. Other Things to NoteThere are 3rd party parking lots on both sides of the property which are operated by the same company. $11 Monday thru Friday; $3 evenings & weekends (monthly rates also available).
The TV is a SMART TV, we get basic channels and there is Netflix.
