The SpaceWelcome to our family home on our small working farm not far from Oamaru. We love our peaceful farm location. Here you will find all the aspects of a rural lifestyle, yet the township of Oamaru is only a 5 minute drive away! Our rural farmstay/homestay is located less than a 10 minute drive from the Historic Victorian Precinct and Blue Penguin viewing in Oamaru, so you get the best of both worlds! For a memorable experience why not spend a night or two immersed in the culture of a small working farm and get to know the locals. Guest accommodation is within our spacious family home which is nestled amongst trees and gardens on a hillside. We farm a total of 200 acres, mainly beef cattle as well as a small number of sheep. In Kiwi terms our farm is considered to be on the small side, however a stay with us will give you an insight into the farming lifestyle. We have pet sheep which can be hand fed and patted, as well as 3 friendly farm dogs, alpaca, pigs, house cats Tansy & Prim, Greta the naughty goat, chickens and ducks. From late August to early October we also hand rear calves so guests staying during that time have the opportunity to pitch in and help. In spring and summer we usually have an extensive vegetable garden growing which you are welcome to explore. Bedding Arrangements:- * Ardgowan Room has a king size bed which can also become 2 single beds. A single trundle bed can also be set up in this room for a 3rd person. * Airedale Room has a king size bed which can also become 2 single beds. * If there are a total of 6 people in your group then a third room with a queen bed is available. Electric blankets are on all beds. Linen, towels & locally produced artisan soap provided. Please note - children are NOT free. We charge per person regardless of age. Enquire first about children less than 3 years of age as our home is not suitable for really young children. Large GUEST SHARE bathroom. Heated towel rail, shower, bathtub and hairdryer. Separate GUEST SHARE toilet. INCLUSIONS - * Continental Breakfast daily - assorted cereals, yoghurt, toast, jams (usually homemade), freshly baked scones or similar, fruit. * Afternoon Tea is you arrive between 3 & 4 pm. * Brief tour of farm to feed the animals (dependant on weather and time available). During the busy summer months this tour is only available between 3 & 5pm - make sure you arrive in time so as not to miss out! * Limited Free wifi. OPTIONAL EXTRAS: * Evening meal $30 per person for main & dessert. At least 2 days notice required. This is shared with our family and is a great way of getting to know one another. * Sheep Shearing or Working Dog Demonstration. Please enquire for prices. If interested in either demonstration mention at time of booking as availability is dependant on my husband's work schedule and weather conditions. An outdoor gas BBQ is available for your use should you wish to cook your own evening meal, we provide BBQ utensils. New Zealand weather is very fickle so outdoor cooking is not always suitable. Other kitchen facilities are NOT available, however you can store food in our fridge if you need to. We recommend a 2 night stay so you have plenty of time to visit historic Oamaru - I think you'll be impressed with what there is on offer in this part of the world. The scenery is breathtaking and there is much to see and do. We would love to have you stay at our farmstay and get to know our little part of New Zealand! Guest AccessCertain areas of the house are not available for guest access as this is also our family home. You are however more than welcome to share our lounge room which is especially nice during winter months when the fireplace is roaring. Our kitchen is NOT available for guest's to cook in except for making a cup of tea/coffee. Guests are more than welcome to wander the flower and vegetable gardens. Access to the farm itself is restricted. A member of our family will guide you on the farm tour to feed the animals. You are welcome to go walking but please ask first to find out safe areas - we fatten bulls which can be quite dangerous. Interaction with GuestsWorking from home gives me the freedom to be around however some times life gets really busy and time is precious. We do however really enjoy meeting folks from all parts of the world and have in the past had some interesting and entertaining conversations which are the rewarding part of hosting guests. I'm usually available to answer any questions you may have :) The NeighborhoodWe love the uniqueness of Oamaru, and it is home to wonderful Victorian buildings made from Oamaru stone including the Opera House, Museum and a collection of historic buildings in Harbour Street. They even hold a Victorian Heritage Celebration in November. There's a fabulous Farmers Market held in the Victorian Precinct every Sunday, where you can purchase local produce, visit arts & crafts shops, see local shopkeepers dressed in Victorian style clothes. If you enjoy bird watching then just down the road us you will find Devils Bridge Wetlands. And on the subject of birds - Oamaru is home to Blue Penguins and Yellow Eyed Penguins - its a bit of a bird lovers paradise really! What else can you find around Oamaru? There are coastal walks and mountain bike riding - the Alps2Ocean Bike Trail passes by Oamaru. Steampunk has set up headquarters here so make sure you check out their displays. The local Oamaru Gardens are a sight to behold, especially in springtime. And did I mention there are some amazing cafes & bakerys around town? Just out of town is Riverstone, an award winning restaurant with amazing vegetable gardens and gift shop. Oamaru is the perfect base for daytrips to Elephants Rocks & Vanishing World, Moeraki Boulders, the lakes, Kurow and its winerys. Getting AroundWe are in a rural location so most suitable for self-drive travellers or keen cyclists. For a fee we can provide pick up & drop off for small travel groups (2 to 3 people). Other Things to NoteAccess to the house is via a staircase, so not suitable for wheelchairs or those with restricted mobility. There are also a small number of stairs inside the house. All guests use the same bathroom/toilet facilities (these are not shared with the host family though). Please be considerate of others.

The SpaceThe Retreat is a self-contained space on the ground floor of our family home on Avon Street. Our home is not the Ritz as it is an older style property, but the location is! Nesting on the hill overlooking the Oamaru Harbour taking in stunning sea views, Avon View is conveniently located between the Yellow Eyed and Blue Penguin Colonies and only a short walk to the Historic Precinct, Steampunk HQ, I-Site, Cafés and Restaurants. The Retreat has its own private entrance off a secluded BBQ area and a beautiful fairy tale garden with big native trees, tucked away reading nooks and quiet places to collect yourself and be at peace. This listing is for both our Sea View and Sunset Room - two lovingly refurbished guest rooms with supremely comfortable queen size beds. For bookings with 5 or 6 guests we can prepare an additional single bed in the Sunset room and/or a double sized sofa bed in the living room. Guests will have their own private bathroom, a separate toilet and a simple yet functional kitchenette (mini-fridge, microwave, oven, toaster, kettle, cooking utensils, spice rack, free coffee/tea). Relax in our recently extended and renovated TV lounge with comfy couch and a big wooden dining table. We offer Sky TV (Satellite) with 5+ Sports Channels and have a selection of music and movies for you to choose from. We have recently upgraded our heating system to include a heatpump, panel heaters and electric blankets (winter) so your stay will be as cosy as possible. Please refer to our other two listings “Avon View Retreat Sea View Room” https://www.airbnb.co.nz/rooms/12892653 and “Avon View Retreat Sunset Room” https://www.airbnb.co.nz/rooms/14641454 if you only need one bedroom. These listings are suitable for small groups consisting of 1 to 3 travelers. Guest AccessGuests will have access to secure off-street parking, a shared clothesline and the laundry room. The Retreat has its own private entrance via an external stairway. Guests will have access to a private sunny courtyard & garden shared by the friendly house owners. Guests have sole access to Avon View Retreat. The place is for the exclusive use of YOU and rented ONLY to one party at a time. The upper level of the house is not accessible to guests. Interaction with GuestsWhile we like to meet our guests in passing, Avon View Retreat is very private and frequently guests come and go without seeing us. We want our guests to feel welcome and comfortable in our home and are happy to share our local knowledge with you whether it is on Oamaru events, attractions or restaurants. While the owners, Sue & Frank, work full time, Kristin can be reached on her phone at any time and is happy to assist you if you need her help. The NeighborhoodOur house on Avon Street is situated in a very tranquil and secure neighborhood. It's only a stone's throw away from the beginning of a walk that takes you up to the Oamaru Lookout Point where you can enjoy the most stunning sunrises and sunsets. King George Park, the Public Gardens with their bird aviaries, the Aquatic Centre and moreover the unique Steampunk playground – all at a very small distance - make our Retreat the perfect place for families. Only a 10min drive south is Kakanui, a lovely place to go for walks, swim or surf. Another 25min further and you’ll arrive at the famous Moeraki Boulders and the Moeraki Lighthouse - most significant breeding site for yellow-eyed penguins. Or drive an hour inland through the beautiful Waitaki Valley with its numerous lakes and walks... Other Things to NoteThis isn’t a hotel. It’s a cozy self-contained apartment for friendly people to enjoy a private but home-like experience. While tea & coffee making facilities are provided, we are not a traditional 'B&B' with a breakfast offering but we can recommend that you head to Tees St. Cafe (10min walk) for all of your breakfast needs. CHILDREN: Our place is suited for children of all ages. They may share one of the existing beds or use the single bed in our Sunset room. We can also provide a cot bed for our youngest guests. A surcharge may apply so please contact us BEFORE you make a booking. Our old cat “Sparky” knows all our neighbours. In between chasing other cats and sea gulls he takes regular catnaps in the sunniest spots in our garden. He only comes home for a pat, a meal and the occasional sleepover by the fire in winter and only has access to the upstairs floor and not the Retreat. Please note that bookings during the summer season (December-April) may require a 2 night minimum.
