The SpaceIn the majestic high country of northern New Mexico, at the southernmost abutment of the San Juan Mountains, is the small 18th Century Spanish village of El Rito, named after the "little creek" that flows through it. Alongside El Rito Creek at the mouth of the narrow canyon from which it flows down from the mountains is my home, the El Rito Retreat, a beautiful two-story adobe. It has three bedrooms, two upstairs with views of the surrounding countryside. The kitchen is the heart of the house, large and welcoming, well stocked with everything to make cooking a delight, each of the three bedrooms is unique and lovely, the house has a satisfying rustic character, with genuine mud and gypsum plaster, wood trim and viga (log) ceilings. The sunroom is a warm place to bask and generates warmth for the entire house through passive solar gain. The views are panoramic through large windows looking out into the wooded surroundings and hills. Down along the bank of the creek is a small grassy area among cottonwoods and wild plums, perfect for sunbathing, picnics, birdwatching, nighttime campfires and dips in the water on hot days. The house is at the mouth of El Rito Canyon which contains the river for ten miles into the high country, where aspens and tall ponderosa pines and elk and mountain wildflowers abound. Hiking, mountain climbing, fishing and biking are a few of the outdoor activities available just out the door. In the other direction is the town of El Rito with one of the most famous restaurants in all of northern New Mexico, El Farolito, a hole in the wall with authentic NM food and more rustic charm than you can shake a stick at. The massive Catholic church (and fortress) built in 1832 is downtown, and just 15 miles east are hot springs in Ojo Caliente, fifteen miles west are the home and favorite landscapes of the great painter Georgia O'Keeffe, and the towns of Taos, Dixon, Santa Fe and Los Alamos, are all within an hour's drive. Stay next to the creek at the edge of the wilderness, explore the wonders of northern New Mexico. Stay at the El Rito Retreat. Interaction with Guestswe are available by phone at anytime The Neighborhoodits rustic and peaceful Getting Aroundneed a car and 4 wheel drive is best

The SpaceThis is a wonderful space, bright, clear, and good energy. It was created to be your home away from home, a cozy place from which to create/live your own adventure. It is comfortable and convenient, great to relax, breathe deeper, and enjoy the bright blue day and starry night skies. The guesthouse (400 sq ft) is located on 4 acres of land and contains everything you might need, a wonderful bed and a fully equipped kitchenette. The space is best for 2 or 3 people using 2 beds. When there is a long-term workshop in town or family reunion, the futon couch opens into a full size futon bed for a 4th person. The largest room serves as bedroom with a queen size bed (Serta Perfect Sleeper). It also has a dining area with a round butcher block table & chairs, and a futon couch. The other room is the kitchenette with a twin size couch/bed. The beds are firm with memory foam toppers. The kitchenette comes fully equipped for your cooking pleasure. It makes this place unique and a real find especially for those who like to cook for themselves. There is a 4-burner gas stove and a motel size refrigerator. It is also equipped with a counter top electric oven/toaster, microwave, automatic coffee pot, coffee filters, electric teapot, blender, and crock pot. Some cooking basics, organic instant coffee and herb tea bags are provided. Many windows fill the rooms with lots of beautiful, natural light. Passive solar energy concepts have been used to moderate temperatures. Bamboo shades, thermal curtains and a shaded area on the west side of the guesthouse help keep the temperature inside and out pleasant during the summer heat. There are ceiling fans in case you need more air flow and cooling in the summer. Sunlight infuses and warms the room in the winter, in addition to propane gas and electric heaters. The floors are ceramic tile. The bathroom includes a shower stall and a closet. If relaxing at the Springs is what brings you here, we provide extra towels and a lock for the lockers, because they charge for those services. Even though we pay someone to prepare for and clean after your visit, there are no extra fees for cleaning, or for local (GRT) taxes. We do everything we can to keep you within budget. There are patio tables and chairs outside and a BBQ grill, the kind that needs your briquettes and lighter fluid. Guest AccessIt is easy to find my home with my detailed and correct directions PRINTED out. LIMITED CELL PHONE SERVICE AND BAD DIRECTIONS ON SMART PHONES will make it hard to find without my directions. US 285 is a 2 lane, rural, unlit highway with no commercial businesses within 4 miles. Especially in the winter when it gets dark early, you will have to pay attention to mile markers to leave hwy correctly. You may find the gate to the property closed but not locked. You will slip the chain over the pole and push the gate with wheel to open. Please close when you exit the property. My house, the guesthouse and barn are located on 4 acres of private land with a view of bluffs and mesas that rise in the distance. It is private, laid back, fairly quiet except for the sounds of coyotes, frogs, insects, the 2 lane highway that gets you here, and occasionally neighbors’ cows and dogs. You can walk to the river, although the fields are overgrown with native plants, bushes & trees presently. Depending on snow and rainfall, and irrigation, the fields can sometimes be muddy, have standing water in the spring. My vegetable and flower gardens around the casita are messy and sometimes productive. Cell phone reception is spotty here, although 4 miles north near the Springs, there is reception. There is an old box TV and a satellite receiver. While we supposedly have high speed internet via wifi, it is not as fast and strong as what can be provided in cities, and not what you may be accustomed to. We make our space available to both those with and without pets. When we have pet guests, we cover couches and beds with sheets that are easy to clean after you depart. Please let me know before you reserve if you are bringing a pet. There will be an extra fee of $10. Please walk dogs on a leash near house and flower and veggie gardens. Please supervise dogs on property and clean up after them. Every effort has been made to provide a healthy and healing environment for you, including all natural, non-toxic cleaning products. We are constantly upgrading to provide better for your needs and comfort. If you attend Bolad's, this house is less than 1/3 mile to workshop. Interaction with GuestsIt is very important to me that you are comfortable and content in my home. I am Italian American with that sense of hospitality & I enjoy meeting new people, and having guests. I would love to be here to welcome you, but my work schedule may not allow that. I am providing acupuncture, etc in a substance abuse program and to local people from Espanola to Taos to Ojo. I will be available to you if you need anything. This is your vacation, your special time. I am sure that you have your own plans to relax and enjoy. For groups and/or those staying a week or longer, I will provide extra towels as needed. Mid-week, depending on my availability, you may do a load of laundry. The NeighborhoodOjo Caliente is the place to stay for a relaxing spa or family holiday, and a quiet healing retreat. This Vacation Rental resides in the village of Ojo Caliente whose name means ‘hot eye’ referring to our natural hot springs. The town of Ojo Caliente has 5 restaurants and cafe/snack bars, a cash machine, a local gas station/grocery store (not open 7/11), and gift shops. Getting AroundThere is public transportation on RTD bus from Espanola to within 1/8 mile of my house. You will encounter bike riders and those preparing for races on the highway. It is 4-5 miles to the Springs. You will need your own transportation to do anything but be on my property. This is an agricultural and rural area. Other Things to NoteFor locals, Ojo is a small, rural, ranching and agricultural village in northern New Mexico. Northern New Mexico is a high desert with very dynamic weather that changes with the time of day and by the minute. In Ojo, we are about 6,500’ above sea level. Generally the skies are clear. In winter the nights are very cold and the days are moderate. Summer is hot, usually not too hot, and nights are cool and fresh. Because of this, it is unusual to have air conditioning except in motels and mobile homes. Those of us who live here have gotten used to the whims of nature and technology. I hope you will too. The SpaceConstructed in part of traditional old adobe and in part of frame and stucco, the River House is cool in summer and warm in winter. Its construction helps to maintain even temperatures. Large south facing windows provide a view that allows emotional escape without ever going outside. You could just sit in the living room and gaze out at the distant mountains. Large windows, solar tubes, and sky lights provide a bright living space. In winter, the Saltillo tile floors are kept warm with in-floor radiant heating. The bedrooms are kept cool, as they are sunken into the earth, for comfortable sleeping Guest AccessArtists, honeymooners, lovers, and philosophers alike will appreciate this recently renovated home whose bedrooms and game room are sunken, earthship-like in the ground. You will be comfy staying inside by the Cast iron wood-burning stove in winter, hiking up the mountain, or strolling down to the river bank and frolicking in the natural swimming hole. Or, you might want to just snooze in the hammock between the oak trees. The River House is perfect for anyone who wants a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of a busy life. If the gentleman or the woman wants to show off cooking skills to her or his sweetheart (or not), all will appreciate the convenient kitchen, which features a full range of cooking utensils and supplies. Interaction with GuestsOwners are not onsite. Assistance is available when necessary. The River House Retreat is designed for self catering and care to give you solitude and quiet. It is recommended that guests arrive before dark on the first night of there stay since this rural area has no exterior lighting. The NeighborhoodNot only is the River House on the El Rito creek, our Retreat borders the mountainous Carson National Forest and you can hike for miles right out the back door. A short drive takes you to a creekside trail leading to Potrero Falls amidst tall Ponderous pines and aspens, or to a dramatic outcropping of volcanic upthrust near a shady stream. Nearby forest roads lead you to high mountain meadows filled with wildflowers and streams and breathtaking views, or off into desert canyonlands, with red cliff walls and towering rock formations. In winter, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are great pastimes. Year round, the very clear night sky is perfect for stargazing amd the area boasts a large variety of birds. The historic village of El Rito has it's own charm, including a well-supplied library, a traditionally-built adobe church, and El Farolito, owned and run by Carmen and Dennis Trujillo for 30 years, world famous for its authentic northern New Mexico cuisine, recommended in the Rand McNally Road Atlas and Gourmet Magazine. Their red and green chili dishes are delicious and very reasonably priced. Getting AroundYour own car is required to access and enjoy the River House Retreat. Other Things to NoteEl Rito is 15 miles north of Abiquiu, with it's stunningly beautiful lake for swimming and boating. In the village of Abiquiu, you can tour the home and studio of world reknowned painter Georgia O'Keefe, and visit the Rising Moon Gallery, bursting with high quality art by local artists. And further north in Chama, you can ride the historic Toltec Railroad through the high mountains, catching the glory of the changing colors of Fall. El Rito is 14 miles west of the beautifully appointed Ojo Caliente Hot Springs Spa and Resort, with a variety of natural mineral pools to soak in, plenty of massage and spa treatments to choose from, and a delicious restaurant to top off an adventurous day. Only one hour to Santa Fe, and about the same to Taos, you can enjoy all kinds of fine dining, live music, museums, galleries, boutique shops, antique stores, films, opera, and much more. Both Santa Fe and Taos have ski basins, and there are several golf courses in the area. There are many national monuments and historic sites in the area, including Bandelier with it's ancient cliff dwellings and petroglyphs. Whether you're seeking cultural activities, ancient history, or natural beauty, there's something for everyone in this compelling heartland of Northern New Mexico.

The SpaceCliff River Springs has seven casitas. Wood House, listed here, has a king bed and a private south-facing deck and is one of the seven. The base rate includes taxes and your cleaning fee. We do have a 2-night minimum stay requirement. // The land is what's so special about this place, and it's yours to explore. It's very private and quiet. You can hike forever in four directions, read in the sun in a forest hammock, and listen to the owls call along the river at night. We call it the "near wilderness," bordered as it is by actual wilderness. And yet we're just a few miles from the wonderful Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Spa and Resort, and only an hour north of Santa Fe. We're new and working hard to provide visitors to Santa Fe, Taos and Ojo Caliente a comfortable, memorable lodging alternative in a stunning, one-of-a-kind setting. Guest AccessYou can go anywhere you like on the land. There are printed handouts describing walks that take you into canyons and up onto ridgelines with spectacular views. We have marked many of the walks with cairns. (It's hard to get lost here.) Our large spring-fed pond attracts birds and wildlife. It's wonderful for summer swimming. Interaction with GuestsWe'll help you get settled in and we're here if you need us, but we respect your privacy above all. Expect to experience the beauty of the place on your terms, at your pace. You'll have your own code for leaving and entering the property so you can head off to explore the Rio Grande Gorge, buy at snack in Abiquiu at Bode's, or take the waters at the Spa in Ojo Caliente, as you wish. There are many suggestions for what to do in the area on our website. The NeighborhoodWhat we treasure about Cliff River Springs' location are the dark star-laden skies here, the fact that in any direction our casitas and ranch buildings are the only structures you can see, and the easy access to the forest, state and federal lands which surround us and make for incredible hiking, birding and photography opportunities. Getting AroundA car is recommended. This is a very rural area. We will provide you with detailed directions and arrival info in the week before you are due to check in. (Please do not rely on mapping or GPS services.) There are a number of local restaurants, but you should plan on stopping and picking up food for your stay on the way in. We'll provide for your first breakfast and stock your fridge with freshly harvested produce from our organic farm. Other Things to NotePlease look at our site cliff river springs online for complete details on everything we can't get into here. We know you'll be wowed by the setting, but rest assured, we take your comfort very seriously. We've opened up our family's 1200-acre ranch so that you can enjoy it just as much as we do. We look forward to meeting you on the land!

The SpaceCliff River Springs has seven casitas in all and Upper Stream House, listed here, is one of our most spacious. It is one of three casitas with a gas fireplace and is our only casita with air conditioning. (AC -- at 6500 feet altitude -- is really just not that necessary.) Situated on the second floor of a pitched roofed house, Upper Stream can connect to Lower Stream (a casita downstairs that has two bedrooms) via an internal staircase if you are traveling with family or friends. Or, with the staircase locked off you can enjoy complete privacy upstairs on your own. Upper Stream gets its name from the nearby acequia (flowing ditch) which carries water from our warm spring to a large swimming pond. The master bedroom w/ king bed and writing desk is roomy and beautiful. Take the cool out of the evening air with a cheery gas fireplace in the living room. A very comfortable queen fold-out couch can be used to accommodate another two people, making Upper Stream comfortable for one to four people. The base rate includes taxes and your cleaning fee. The SpaceThe short driveway is lined in plum trees, white with blossoms in April, and hopefully full of plums in August. This is a welcoming home set up to accommodate families and groups of friends, a warm wood burning stove provides a rich hearth and there are board games and many movies to enjoy. I have a tiny DVD player or you may use your own device to watch them. This space is comfortable and private with lots of windows full of New Mexico's blue skies. The kitchen is stocked with cooking utensils, pots and pans. But no microwave. The back porch is lovely and faces a quiet garden and yard which are shaded by giant cottonwood trees, full of wild birds, and a poultry run with turkeys and chickens. The main house is across the garden from the casita, where the host resides. Ojo Caliente Hot Springs is 10 miles north, there are 4 retaurants, 1 bakery/pizza place, 1 local store and 1 gas station. 1 hr driving to either Taos or Santa Fe. It is 40 minutes to Abiquiu, 1 hr to Ghost Ranch or Bandalier National Park. The Santa Fe Opera House is 45 minutes from here. This is 15 minutes from Ohkay Owhinge Pueblo and Casino. Espanola, NM is 20 minutes away with the Santa Claran Casino and Buffalo Thunder is 40 minutes away on the road to Santa Fe. There are many other historic and interesting places easily traveled to from here. I have been living and working here 9 years, and have lots of knowledge and information that may help you while visiting Ojo Caliente. I will be here to check you in and help with questions etc, I live in the Casita just across the yard. I work at home and in the community. My schedule is flexible so just call and we can work your special details. We are at a place called "Shadow Mountain", it is a straight away that used to be the watering hole on this road, you can still see the cut in the Mesa behind my house that was the old stage coach road. We are shadowed by the Mesa to the east and the Ojo Caliente river is across the road to the west. I love the river, I go walking with my dog daily down by the hots springs, I love to hike up the arroyos. I love the endless blue skys, the rainy season, the snow and the sandhill cranes who migrate along the river in October and February. They call loudly to each other the entire time they fly and it always amazes me to hear them. The road is well maintained in all types of weather. We are shadowed by the Mesa to the east and the Ojo Caliente river is across the road to the west. I love the river, I go walking with my dog daily down by the hotsprings, I love to hike up the arroyos. I love the endless blue skys, the rainy season, the snow and the sandhill cranes who migrate along the river in October and February. Getting AroundThe road is well maintained. The SpaceThe Big Sky Lodge is a peaceful retreat from the noise and stress of everyday life. You can get away from it all without being too far away - we've got wifi, cable and reliable phone service. Sit by the clear mountain streams burbling in the front yard, walk among the Pinon, juniper and sagebrush, let the bright blue skies, and starry nights soothe your overloaded senses. Guest AccessGuests can go anywhere in the house they please. We have our stuff in the stables/storage area, but otherwise, the grounds are also free for wandering. Nature also runs free here - deer, raccoons, bunnies and the occasional black bear stop by to nibble on the many edible plants in our backyard. There's cholla, prickly pear, yucca, and piñon. The creek that runs along the front yard also provides a haven for the local wildlife. The roll-off roof observatory is also available. There is a pier-mounted Celestron CGEM 1100 with - a Canon-camera mount, - a Telrad, - a finder scope - a fcusb from shoestring astronomy - a motofocus, - a Celestron off-axis guider with various adapters - an SBIG st-i as an autoguider - a selection of 2 inch eye pieces (40, 32, 26 and 18mm) and filters (including variable-polarizing and narrowband o-iii filters.) It is powered by a small solar array with DC and AC outputs (12-volt). There is also an 8" collapsible Dobsonian. For more information on our location, we are at 170 NM-110, El Rito, New Mexico 87530. The right-of-way to the house has a sharp turn, that limits trailers to 20' in length. Interaction with GuestsWe offer the entire house for rent, so we won't be in the immediate area during your stay, but we will be there to greet guests and show them the ropes. Phone numbers/contact info are given upon check-in. The NeighborhoodThe village of El Rito is in the rugged high desert country of northern New Mexico. One of the first Spanish settlements in the area, the oldest church in New Mexico is here. Home to artists, photographers, ranchers and farmers, El Rito has that quirky New Mexico vibe. Carson National Forest - (right in our backyard) Many acres of barely-explored trails and spectacular rock climbing spots. El Faralito Restaurant - (website hidden) called El Faralito a folksy eatery. They recommend the green chili stew and the "excellent Fritos pie". I always go for their chicken enchilada/chili relleno combo with green and red chile (Christmas) Plaza Blanca Ranch - These spectacular white-rock badlands were painted by Georgia O'Keefe. Plaza Blanca was also the location of the alien ship in "Cowboys and Aliens" Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat center - Georgia O'Keefe painted a lot here. You can camp out, meditate, yoga, paint or take classes. Bode's General Store - Groceries and camping supplies. Lunches are also served. Recommended: the green chile burgers. Ojo Caliente Mineral Baths and Spa - A wonderful place to spa and relax. And eat. Getting AroundThe RTD Blue Bus provides service to El Rito (schedules available online) but this area is best accessed by car or truck. Other Things to NoteWe only charge for guests aged 13 and over. Those under 13 stay for free.

The SpaceCliff River Springs has seven casitas in all. Cliff East, listed here, has a queen bed and is one of the three casitas that can connect (or not) in Cliff House -- which can be great if you're traveling with friends or family. Or you can enjoy complete privacy. The base rate includes taxes and your cleaning fee. We do have a 2-night minimum requirement. // The land is what's so special about this place...and it's all yours to explore. It's very private and quiet. You can hike forever in four directions, read in the sun in a forest hammock, and listen to the owls call along the river at night. We call it the "near wilderness," bordered as it is by actual wilderness. And yet, we're just a few miles from the wonderful Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Spa and Resort, an hour from Santa Fe, 40 minutes from Abiquiu and 50 minutes from Taos. We're new and working hard to provide visitors to Santa Fe, Taos and Ojo Caliente a comfortable, memorable lodging alternative in a stunning, one-of-a-kind setting. Guest AccessYou can go anywhere you like on the land. There are printed handouts describing walks that take you into canyons and up onto ridge lines with spectacular views. You'll have your own code for leaving and entering the property so you can head off to explore the Rio Grande Gorge, buy at snack in Abiquiu at Bode's or take the waters at the Spa in Ojo Caliente, as you wish. We will provide you with detailed directions and arrival info about in the week before you are due to check in. This wonderful, comfortable, and serene hideaway accommodates 4-5 people. The uniquely designed passive solar adobe house with high wood ceilings and impressive vigas is spacious and filled with light. There is one bath with tub and shower and two large bedrooms, each with a spectacular view. The softly curved walls of most rooms create a calm and nurturing environment. A fireplace adds to the warmth and comfort of the radiant floor heat. And along with great indoor living and dining spaces, there is a covered patio for outdoor dining and relaxation. A newly added hot tub on the front patio is perfect for relaxation and stargazing year round. Casa Ambrosia borders the mountainous Carson National Forest and you can hike for hundreds of miles right out the back door. Year round, the very clear night sky is perfect for stargazing. The historic village of El Rito has it's own charm, including a well-supplied library, a traditionally-built adobe church, and El Farolito, a small family restaurant, world famous for its authentic northern New Mexico cuisine, recommended in the Rand McNally Road Atlas and Gourmet Magazine. Their red and green chili dishes are delicious and very reasonable. Casa Ambrosia is 15 miles north of Abiquiu, with it's stunningly beautiful lake for swimming and boating. Casa Ambrosia is 14 miles west of the beautifully appointed Ojo Caliente Hot Springs Spa and Resort, with a variety of natural mineral pools to soak in, plenty of massage and spa treatments to choose from, and a delicious restaurant to top off an adventurous day. Both Santa Fe and Taos have ski basins, and there are several golf courses in the area. There are many national monuments and historic sites in the area, including Bandelier with it's ancient cliff dwellings and petroglyphs.
