The SpaceThis offering at this time is sort of an "indoor camping" experience. If you would be satisfied to just have a roof over your head for a mountain retreat, clean sheets and towels, a hot shower, a fridge, coffee maker, microwave and and a two-burner stove for cooking, this work-in-progress could be a good fit! The property is surrounded by lush state forest, with wildlife and mountain views creating a peaceful, rural experience. We own 48 acres nestled in Green Ridge State Park, an hour from Hagerstown, MD and 30 minutes from Cumberland, MD. A local farmer keeps a few cows in our fields to keep the grass down. The original house is quite old, and we are slo-o-o-wly adding improvements as we can afford, such as a second full bathroom, a wood burning stove, new windows, and more. For now, if you don't mind the unfinished construction areas, you can enjoy the views and quiet of the mountain and have use of a decent bedroom with a full-size bed and a twin mattress if needed for an additional guest. There is a basic bathroom with tub and shower, a kitchen with two burner stove, stocked with plenty of dishes, pots, utensils, and small living room. The existing bathroom is cosmetically unappealing, in need of an upgrade, but it's functional with toilet, sink and shower. Upstairs rooms are still unfinished, in progress at this time. Expect some construction materials stored here and there in upstairs rooms and on the outside grounds. If this can be overlooked, you'll have a lovely, peaceful weekend with a bedroom, kitchen, small living room and bath. Good for visiting hikers or hunters. On the plus side, the kitchen has ample space for cooking meals, beds are comfy with fresh colorful linens, nice hot showers or tub bath, fresh air, and lovely views for a weekend getaway! Guest AccessFarm house, main level, which has two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and full bath. Upstairs and basement have construction debris and are therefore not suited to guests. Interaction with GuestsMy family often stays weekends in a second cabin we have on the property, also listed here on airbnb, which is up the hill by several hundred yards. We may or may not be around the area during your stay, however we give guests privacy so you only interact with us if you have a question or need something. Getting AroundGood to have vehicle with front wheel drive, but not crucial during good weather seasons.

The Space2 BR 1 BA fully furnished cabin built in the 1920's, in Green Ridge State Forest, Oldtown, MD, on 40 private acres backing up to a mountain, located between Hagerstown and Cumberland., off Route 68, Surrounded by trees and beautiful views. Pastoral setting with cows grazing in nearby meadows, restaurant and golf at Rocky Gap State Park, 20 miles away. 25 miles from historic Cumberland, Maryland. Camping, fishing and hiking trails all close by. Kitchen has utensils, dishes, pots and pans. Linens and towels provided. Lots of blankets and pillows and throws for cozy reading or snuggling up to watch old videos. A wood burning stove/fireplace is coming in November to make for even cozier winter nights! There is also an oil furnace that keeps the house toasty. LR has two couches, a rocker and a day bed to accomodate extra guests if desied. NOTE: This is our family's mountain get-away, which we use often, so it's tidy, but not immaculate like a hotel. We have personal belongings on shelves and in dressers, condiments in refrigerator, and food in cabinets (which guest is welcome to use). There is dresser space for guests and some empty cabinet space for guest's food. The cabin is dusted and vaccuumed, bathroom and kitchen wiped down between guests, fresh linens and towels provided. The furniture is lovingly worn, not sparkly new. We steam upholstery and rugs every few months, so it is clean though not spot free - it saves $ and keeps the price low, not to replace every item that gets spots from regular use - which is why the price is lower than some and it is fine to bring children and a dog if desired. T.V. reception is poor, and no internet up there, unless you have a cellular data plan on your phone, computer or tablet devices. There is wifi at Rocky Gap lodge and McDonald's should you want to check emails while out and about. Privacy: Two motor homes are also housed on the property. One belongs to my father who stays a few days per month and does caretaking for us, but lives elsewhere. Unless we are having work done on the grounds or at a second old house down the hill that we're gradually renovating on the property, you will likely not see anyone during your stay. Closest towns for groceries: Paw Paw, WV is 11 miles, Hancock, MD is 28, Cumberland, MD is 22 miles. Potential turn-offs: The water has a high iron content, so toilet and tub tend to get orange-colored film on them. This is not dirt. LimeAway does a pretty good job cleaning off the film, but it can show up again after a few showers. We filter drinking and cooking water with Britta filter pitcher and the filtered mountain water tastes great. No cable or internet up there. Some cell plans may work for internet on phones or tablets. We have AT&T which gets a decent signal. Some others do not. Because we are pet lovers, one dog is allowed with a non-refundable pet fee of $50 cash. (No cats please; many guests are allergic and dander lingers in the air). Walks along Green Ridge Road and nearby trails, covered back deck for pleasant outdoor meals, sipping morning coffee or tea as mist rises in the field below. Access to washer and dryer, fishing pond. We would not be on the property at the same time as guests, other than to check in. We have a second house on the property, several acres down the hill, which we are gradually renovating, so we, or our contractors, may be there some days during your stay, however we will respect your privacy in the upper house and you would not hear any noise from there. We love the mountain views, clear, open skies, wildlife and farmer's cows roaming the fields. We also love to take long walks, and to drive to nearby trails and ponds for picnics. 11 miles away is the Paw Paw Tunnel, an interesting place for an outing. Rocky Gap state park is 12 miles away, and features a large fishing lake with paddle boats, kayaking and canoeing, a sandy beach area, volley ball and a restaurant. Guest AccessGuests especially rave about walks along Green Ridge Road and nearby trails, the covered back deck for pleasant outdoor meals, sipping morning coffee or tea as mist rises in the field below. Access to washer and dryer, which are outside the main house, and access to fishing pond. Interaction with GuestsWe would not usually be on the property at the same time as guests, other than to check in. We have a second house on the property, several acres down the hill, which we are gradually renovating, so we, or our contractors, may be there some days during your stay, however we will respect your privacy in the upper house. As stated above, my father has a motor home in the front lawn area where he stays a few nights per month to check on things and help maintain the grounds. The NeighborhoodWe love the mountain views, clear, open skies, wildlife and farmer's cows roaming the fields. We also love to take long walks, and to drive to nearby trails and ponds for picnics. Mostly, it is delightful to wake up and greet the morning on the back deck, watching mist rise from the fields, seeing deer, birds, butterflies and wild turkeys who pass by from time to time. Getting AroundNo public transpo. Other Things to Note11 miles away is the Paw Paw Tunnel, an interesting place for an outing. Rocky Gap state park is 12 miles away, and features a large fishing lake with paddle boats, kayaking and canoeing, a sandy beach area, volley ball and a restaurant.

The SpaceFully renovated cabin with vintage features. It looks old but everything has been salvaged from somewhere else. Clawfoot tub. Huge screened in porch. Full kitchen. Two bedrooms in main house with queen beds. Futon in living room. Bunkhouse (heated by space heaters in winter) has a double bed, double futon and bunk with queen mattress. Three primary beds have pillows and duvets. Bedding needed for rest. You bring sheets and towels for all. Amazing views. A separate bunkhouse where you can stash the kids. Outdoor shower in summer. Phone service. Wifi. You can learn (EMAIL HIDDEN) Please note there is no TV and no a/c. We are in the mountains where the nights are typically chilly well into June. During the day, breezes come straight off the river and fans will keep you cool on even the hottest days of summer. The cabin is self-catering. We are far away from any major city and unfortunately there is no reliable maid service and no local trash pick-up. If cleaning up after yourself is your cup of tea, then this isn't the spot for you. We operate on the honor system (although my husband I get up there as often as possible to make sure things are okay) so please leave it as you would hope to find it! Please note: A recent guest and his family members became ill during a visit in mid-July and in their review, they said the river was to blame. We have checked with local authorities and there have been no reports of river-related illness. Guest Access15 acres of wilderness. Hiking trails. Fishing. Tubing on the Potomac River. Bonfire pit. Interaction with GuestsOwners not on premises. You'll be on your own, but you can call us as needed. The NeighborhoodGated community but doesn't feel like it. Our property is right on the river first surveyed by George Washington. In summer, we have our own beach. Helpful neighbors who aren't around much. Historic sites close by including Paw Paw Tunnel. 40 minutes from ski resorts and hot springs. This is wild and wonderful West Virginia at its finest. The perfect spot to get away from it all. Spend your day floating lazily down the river and your night counting the stars. Getting AroundYou will need a car. In winter, you will need a vehicle that can handle muddy or snowy roads. The river access is about a 5-8 minute walk away from the house. Other Things to NoteCottage is entirely self-catering. Kitchen is fully equipped. You will need to bring sheets and towels. There is limited cell service but you can forward your mobile to our house phone. Please note that the trampoline in the photo met an untimely demise earlier this year and is no longer with us.

The SpaceThe rental is a historic cabin with the exterior recently renovated to maintain its rustic look. It is suitable for outdoorsman, couples wanting a more rugged romantic getaway in private, or for family camping. Note that some building materials (stacks of lumber and barn boards) are still on premises from the renovations. The cabin has a large screened in porch and an open floor plan on the main floor with a small loft overlooking it. Four people can comfortably camp in the cabin. Guests can throw down a sleep pad and sleeping bag on the floor or in the loft or bring a cot. There are two cots and a small hammock strung between beams inside for your use. There is also a Porta-John serviced weekly outside the cabin. The cabin is completely off grid and does not have running water/plumbing/electricity. It is primitive camping in style, but that means you will see creepy crawly things like spiders and possibly even a mouse. You need to pack like your are camping. Also, it is mandatory you bag out all waste (HUMAN or otherwise). I recommend bringing a camp toilet if you do not want to use the Porta-John. Due to the water table essentially at ground level, we take proper disposal of human waste very seriously because it will rapidly pollute the ground water. On very humid days you may be able to here a distant crackling sound caused by the high tension powerlines that cross the property. Don't worry, that is normal. The wood stover is now operational for the season. If you intend to use, please bring your own firewood, make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the cabin, and do not split wood inside or on the porch. The gas range is not currently operational. Please do not try to use it. If you would like to make a fire outside, there is a camp fire ring in front of the porch with some benches and logs to sit on and a pile for wood in front of it. Do not cut or damage live trees for wood. Feel free to bring a grill, generator, battery operated fan (it's hot and humid in the summer), or other convenience. If you want to just tent camp, that is perfectly fine too and I recommend using the upper campsite for that since it offers an excellent view and privacy. Guest AccessThe cabin is secured via a lock. A key is provided via a lockbox and combo upon confirmation of reservation. A vehicle with Four Wheel Drive or higher clearance such as an SUV or truck is recommended, but not necessary for access. Access is via WV Rt 29. Detailed directions to the property will be emailed upon booking confirmation. In extreme weather such as heavy snow or high water, the cabin can become inaccessible. Please coordinate with me for detailed driving directions in the event of bad weather. The rental provides access to the cabin, pond, shooting range, and river. There is plenty of privately owned land for hiking and walks, but be advised that the property is bordered by other private property that should be respected. You may see one of the adjacent land owners pass through because the farm road provides deeded access to neighboring properties. The neighbors are very friendly and good people so please be respectful. Guests can be provide boundary maps if they want to camp/hike on the back acreage upon request. Interaction with GuestsAll coordination for the cabin must be done in advance. There is no cell service once you enter into the river valley. The NeighborhoodYou are in the mountains of West Virginia. People are friendly and respectful and enjoy their privacy and expect the same courtesy. Although very private, you will occasionally see a neighbor passing the cabin en route to their property at the far end of the access road. If you head to the back 164 acres, you will pass through a small portion of private property owned by a neighbor. You have permission to use the access road, but be respectful of their property and camp site/cabin. Getting AroundThis is a remote location for people that want to get away, have privacy, and enjoy the outdoors. You do not have public transportation or municipal services. The closest towns are Bloomery and Pawpaw. The closest stores are Omps and Stateline along Rt 127, which provide a post office, general store, and gasoline. Other Things to NoteFire safety is critical while camping at the cabin or campsites. You must make sure ALL fires are COMPLETELY extinguished and NEVER leave any fire unattended. This includes lanterns and candles. Renter will be solely responsible for all damages caused by fire. You are camping. We have lots of wildlife to include bald eagles, black bear, whitetail dear, coyotes, fox, grouse, snakes, mice, turtles, fish, bugs, etc. Please enjoy the wildlife, but respect it. The cabin is stocked with some basic items for your convenience to include life vests, paddles, hand tools to include a splitting maul, brooms and dustpan, can opener, matches, eco fan for the stove, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, etc. Please take care of all items in the cabin and make sure they remain there when you leave to avoid replacement fees. In the metal trashcans (critter proof), you will find consumables such as trash bags, paper towels, paper plates, tea, coffee, etc. These have been provided by me and other guests after leaving. Feel free to use what you need. There is also a shelf with non-perishable canned goods. Feel free to donate your leftovers or restock the consumables. There is a large green trash bin outside of the cabin. You can use it to store full trash bags, but please do not leave trash bags in there...take them with you! We have bears and trash left unattended creates problem bears that usually have to be euthanized. Again, please come prepared with a camp toilet and pack out your waste. Improper disposal will pollute the ground water and make a mess for everyone. You may smoke outside of the cabin, but please make sure you put it out properly and don't leave butts on the ground (trash them). Fishing in the river requires a WV fishing license that can be obtained for as little as one day for both resident and non-residents. Hunting is not permitted; however, shooting is permitted, but must be coordinated in advance of your stay for safety. River access for canoeing (put-ins and take outs) are located all along the river. If you intend to canoe or kayak, please coordinate with me for details. It is a great time, but there are important safety issues to know. Swimming is permitted in the pond and river, but precautions should be taken. As with all bodies of water, life jackets should be worn. Be advised that the far end of the pond is over 15 feet deep and has very steep sides so children should be closely supervised. ATVs can be used at and around the cabin, but please do not tear up the roads and fields (fields have young trees planted). ATVs need to stay on trails and should not be operated late due to noise considerations. Renter will be responsible for any damage caused by ATV use. In the event of emergency, the closest hospital with a trauma center is Winchester Medical Center, which is approximately a 40 minute drive. Cell reception and GPS are very poor in the mountains so do not rely on portable communications devices.

You’ll feel as though you’ve entered a whole different world upon your arrival at the property, which is located just 2 hours and 15 minutes from the capital beltway. Your favorite relaxing spot will quickly become the cabin’s huge 12-by-45-foot deck, boasting amazing views of the treetops, mountains and sunset, plus glimpses of the lake beyond, once the leaves fall. Sit back in one of the deck’s reclining chairs and enjoy the sunshine during the day and the twinkling night sky, emblazoned with more stars than you ever dreamed existed. Attached to the deck is a roomy screened-in porch, which seats 6 guests with a patio couch and comfortable chairs. The screened porch is perfect for reading, relaxing and talking. A private 7-person hot tub right outside on the deck completes the picture. In the hot tub, you can soak your cares away and admire the spectacular wooded scenery surrounding the premises. Numerous invigorating jets propel the hot tub’s healing waters to relax and soothe you, as bright multicolored lights, 2 waterfalls and a volcano jet add to the excitement. It’s a fabulous place to watch the stars and morning sunrise. The deck also has a gas grill for barbequing burgers, fish or veggies. Come relax in sunny greenery and have a wonderful time! Cabin in the Woods is cozy enough for a couple, yet large enough for a group of good friends or the entire family. All the amenities you want in your ultimate home-away-from-home are here, including central air conditioning and heat, high speed wireless internet access, and a lovely stone propane fireplace. After preparing a tasty meal in the quaint full kitchen, gather with your companions in the massive dining room that seats 10. The dining room is surrounded by windows on 3 sides with glorious wooded views. The huge oak table is perfect for playing games together - take your pick from the many board games provided in the dining room cabinet, including Scrabble, Scattergories, Life, Jenga, Settlers of Catan, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, as well as playing cards, dice, and ping pong paddles and balls. The cabin’s welcoming master bedroom offers a nice queen-sized bed with cedar cabinets, a delightful stained glass window, 16-foot high ceiling with fan and trapezoid windows, and a private door leading out to the 12-foot square screened-in porch, and to the hot tub. The second bedroom is a snug bunk room with a set of bunk beds for 2, complete with storage drawers under the bunk. Additional sleeping arrangements can be found in the cabin’s 2 roomy loft spaces, which are carpeted. These are true lofts, and though kids can stand up in them, most adults cannot, yet they are very comfortable to sleep and sit in. Loft 1 is well suited for adults or children, featuring a queen-sized futon on the floor, 2 toddler beds, and a safety gate at the top of the stairs with sturdy rails for your peace of mind. This loft also features 8 windows that let in an abundance of natural light and comfortable carpet for playing or lounging. Adults and kids alike will love being able to look down on the living room through the railing from the loft! Loft 2 is a 12-by-12-foot loft over the dining area, offering trapezoid windows looking out to the woods and 2 single beds, with enough spare room to easily sleep 2 extra guests in sleeping bags. Accessible via sturdy pull-down ladder, the second loft is especially fun for teenagers but not suitable for small children, as the opening for the ladder does not close. As a visitor, you will have full access to Lake Ferndale, the pristine 50-acre private community lake. Everyone in your group will love this cabin’s fantastic location - the beach is accessible by either a nice long walk or easy drive from the property. Lake Ferndale is always quiet and peaceful, spring fed from the surrounding mountains so the water is crystal clear and wonderful for swimming. It’s also a great place for sunbathing, picnicking, low-key fishing, kayaking or canoeing. During the summer, the water feels refreshing but never cold. Because Lake Ferndale’s water increases in depth gradually as it moves from sand to rock bottom, it’s terrific for wading and supervised swimming for all ages. Often times, you may have the lake entirely to yourself! Spend leisurely afternoons unwinding at Lake Ferndale’s Sandy Private Beach, a small beach with white sand that the kids are sure to love. The Sandy Private Beach slopes down to the water and serves as an excellent spot to sit in the sun, make sandcastles, or watch the dazzling sunset at the end of the day. Right next to the beach you’ll find picnic tables under the beautiful pine trees, where you can enjoy a meal while gazing at the lake. After a fun picnic dinner, return to Cabin in the Woods to toast some marshmallows by the campfire circle! Lake Ferndale is stocked with fish, including small mouth bass, and is a great place to do a little fishing. Additionally, Lake Ferndale is a perfect spot to bring your kayak or canoe for some easy paddling. There’s a place to launch your boat, and since only electric motors are allowed, everything stays quiet and still - it’s a lovely lake to boat!
