The Bunkhouse offers year-round, rustic lodging with access to the best of central Vermont’s remote wilderness and miles of trails. We welcome all types of outdoor adventurers, or those just looking to relax in the serenity of the Bunkhouse and its remote surroundings. This is idyllic Vermont, adventures to be had right outside the door, there's something for everyone! Ideal for equine trail riding (bring your horse to stay and ride!), with limitless other activities: Hiking, biking, swimming, XC skiing, snowmobiling, sledding, ice-skating... Come relax in our comfortable cabin and get away from it all. We are a mile from our nearest year-round neighbor and the closest power pole. We are “off the grid,” with solar and generator power for all of your (and our) electrical needs. Despite being in a remote location, it is only a short drive to Barre, Montpelier or Bradford where you will find many dining and shopping options The Bunkhouse is an ideal place for you to come and enjoy a four-season Vermont vacation. It consists of four comfortable rooms and sleeps up to ten people. It contains a large living room with a couch and a futon, a fully equipped kitchen for all of your cooking and dining needs, the bunk room with six bunks and a double bed, as well as a full bathroom with a stand-up shower. Enjoy a BBQ meal on the nice deck (where you will find a beautiful VT Casting's BBQ grill and a nice patio table) overlooking the White Mountains and our pond. There's also a fire pit down by the pond which is pristine and perfect for swimming and floating, or skating on in the winter. The Bunkhouse sits on 101 acres surrounded by State Forest land with plenty of trails to explore. The owners live onsite in a separate home and will be sure to provide privacy. This is a place like no other, where many guests return year after year. We are off a sleepy dirt road with our closest year-round neighbor living a mile away. The Bunkhouse is in a remote area of central Vermont with lots of forest and wildlife surrounding. Once you turn up our driveway that is 1/3 mile long, you'll wind your way up through the pines, where things then open up to a meadow, the Bunkhouse, our pond. Our house is also on the property but sits higher up, away from the Bunkhouse.

The SpaceWe have a big house with an open floor plan, with one very large space downstairs that includes kitchen, bathroom and living room area with wood stove heat. Guest rooms are on the second floor, sharing two bathrooms and one shower. The Summer Kitchen is a tiny cabin completely separate from the house, just a short walk through the orchard. Guest AccessYou will have a quiet 2nd floor room, with access to the spacious first floor where there is comfortable furniture, wireless internet, an open kitchen, roaring wood stoves in winter and a sunny back deck overlooking orchard and gardens in the summer. The third floor is off limits unless you are working at Pepperbox Studio. Interaction with GuestsDepending on our schedule we may be totally busy and unavailable for socializing or fully present for networking and joint meals, if desired. The NeighborhoodThe property we own is a 14-acre tract at the top of a hill at 1900 feet, over-looking the Chelsea valley and Green Mountains beyond. We are close to a small village but tucked up in the hills about five miles out of town. This is the proverbial place where in winter the plow turns around. A mile past the power line, we generate our electricity with wind, solar and generators. We have a working family farm next door, and a mile past our house a mostly wild 200 acres owned by the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, which is open to the public. There are quiet, hidden roads to ski in winter and fields to wander in the summer. This is an ideal visit for people who like seclusion and amazing views. Getting AroundThere is virtually no public transit in this area; the closest place to catch a train or bus would be Montpelier, Randolph or White River Junction, all 45-60 minutes drive from here. Other Things to NoteThis house is also the home of Pepperbox Studio and recording may be going on while you are visiting. If you are a musician, you may schedule time in the studio to work with me, if you are interested in working on your music.

The SpaceThis is a perfect writer's cabin, or romantic getaway, for one or two people who don't mind roughing it in a beautiful setting. There is no running water, no electricity and no bathroom or outhouse at the cabin itself. We can run an extension cord from the house if you would like to utilize one outlet for a lamp or computer. The internet does not extend to this space. There is only a wood stove for heat - plenty warm once it's going. That's part of the fun, at least we think so. The sunshine and rain are always close at hand, and you'll walk through a small apple orchard to get here. Flashlights are essential. The wind will be your companion, singing through a grove of young poplar trees at night, along with crickets in the summer and peepers in the spring. It is the biggest, darkest sky at night, with no lights visible on surrounding hills. Guest AccessIt's a short walk from the Summer Kitchen to the main house, and this is where you'll be able to wash up, use the facilities and cook in our vegetarian kitchen, if you want to. You can hang out on the first floor, if you want to use wi-fi, visit quietly, read, play board games or enjoy the large wood stove fires in the colder months. There is a toilet on the first floor and/or we can show you to a bathtub or shower on the 2nd floor. We keep a quiet house, and there are arts and media-based businesses operating in some of the rooms on the upper floors. Interaction with GuestsWe enjoy meeting new people, and would love to get to know you a little if we are not busy. Good boundaries are important so that we can all enjoy sharing these spaces. Good will is equally important, so that we can be open to new experiences. Cooking a meal together is optional and we welcome you to bring your own non-meat food. Our kitchen is friendly and spacious and a equipped with a coffee grinder and simple cooking utensils. The NeighborhoodWe are at the end of the well traveled portion of the road. In bad weather or mud season, you'll need four wheel drive to get here. But it's only a short 7 minute drive to the village of Chelsea, which has a good pizza place, gas station, convenience store, ATM and park-like commons. So you can get simple supplies in town if you need them. Once you're up at our place, you can walk further down the road or ski in the winter. There are woods trails and a protected wildlife sanctuary about a mile past us. Our immediate neighbors below operate a sometimes noisy working farm, full of pigs, chainsaws and ATVs. That is also part of the flavor of our neighborhood. Getting AroundThere is very limited public transit to our town.

The SpaceThe Bunkhouse is a great place for you to come and enjoy a Vermont vacation. The cozy, western-themed cabin consists of four comfortable rooms and sleeps up to ten people. It contains a large living room with a couch and a futon, a fully equipped kitchen for all of your cooking and dining needs, the bunk room with six bunks and a double bed, as well as a full bathroom with a stand-up shower. There is a large deck overlooking the pond with a BBQ grill and table and chairs. A nice fire pit awaits you down by the pond. Guest AccessGuests can explore the miles of wilderness trails right from the Bunkhouse doors. We have a large deck to enjoy the view of the pristine pond and cook a BBQ meal on the grill. There's a fire pit down by the pond as well. There are safe accommodations for guests to bring their own horses, up to 10 at a time. Also have a large outdoor riding ring. Ideal for camping with your horse! The pond is a perfect place to play and have fun in and around! We have Floaties, a floating dock and comfy chairs to relax in and soak up some rays. In the winter there's plenty of fun to be had, like sledding down the driveway or in our fields. Ice skating on the pond is also a blast. Located minutes from VAST (public snowmobile trails), bring your snowmobile and ride the beautiful trails of Vermont. Interaction with GuestsOur home and the Bunkhouse are located on the same property that consists of 100 acres. Both dwellings are off the grid, solar powered with a generator for back up on cloudy days. We will be present during your stay and will be sure to give you privacy. Wi-Fi can be used in our driveway or on our closed in porch, as well as the home phone. Sorry there's no cell service or wi-fi- come get away from it all! We have four dogs that live on the property, they usually like to visit the Bunkhouse guests from time to time. The NeighborhoodWe are off-the-grid with Solar power and a mile from the nearest year-round neighbor. The Bunkhouse is located in a sparsely populated, mountainous area of Central Vermont. Except for far northeastern Vermont or northern Maine, it doesn't get much more remote than this. This is one of the largest remaining tracts of land in the state with the least number of traveled public roads. This empty land is crisscrossed by endless miles of unmaintained Class 4 town roads and old logging trails, which are perfectly useable for horseback riding, hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. These roads and lands consist of thousands of acres of uninhabited Vermont forest land, all accessible from the Bunkhouse. Getting AroundI'm the winter months, it's is highly recommended that guests have a vehicle with good snow tires and/or four wheel drive. Please inquire further about this. Despite being in a remote location, the towns of Barre, Montpelier and Bradford are a short drive away where you will find many dining and shopping options. We are about one hour from Burlington, VT International Airport and we can arrange transportation. Other Things to Note-Do NOT trust car GPS like Tom-tom's etc., they do not work and send people way out of the way. We recommend printing directions ahead of time and using cell phone GPS'. Because of our remote location, cell phones should not be relied upon for directions as service is often unavailable. Please inquire about proper directions ahead of time. If you have your phone gps navigating BRFORE you lose service, that usually works. - Vermont Rooms and Meals Tax of 9% is included in the price. - There is no Wi-Fi, TV or cell service in the Bunkhouse. We want you to come unplug, relax and enjoy your friend and surroundings! These things can be used from our house however if need be. - We have four friendly dogs, two horses and a cat who live on the property. - In the winter, we strongly recommend your vehicle to have 4 wheel drive and/or good tires. We are located in a remote area of Vermont, and winter can be unpredictable. - Firewood for outside fire pit is provided by us.
