The SpaceWaikawa Beach is just 1 hour 20 minutes drive North of Wellington, New Zealand - and one of the best kept secrets of the coastline. You won't find tourists here - you'll be lucky to bump into locals it's such a jewel. Undisturbed coastline to stroll along. This house sleeps 12 comfortably...has two lounges, seperate dining area, wood burner, 2 indoor bathrooms, 1 external shower box, open air outdoor bath (tap feed but with endless water heated by outdoor fireplace)... Double garage...basketball hoop, pool table, table tennis table. A few bikes for the kids. If you want another aspect of NZ from a tourist perspective, or are a local looking for somewhere different to stay...this is such a great place. Guest AccessYou have access to the entire house and property. Interaction with GuestsWe will send you an information sheet prior to your arrival so you know how everything works etc. The NeighborhoodThere are no shops, cafes or other distractions for the kids. No wifi either or TV. So this is where you really get to strip back and enjoy the area. The walks on the beach are stunning - on a good day you can see both Ruapehu and Taranaki. And lots of bird life from Kapiti Island sanctuary nearby. Getting AroundThere's no public transport out here - which again is part of the charm. This is an old school beach settlement. The kids can ride bikes and run around the neighbourhood just like the old days. Other Things to NoteThe nearest shop is 7km down the road - you pass this on the way in. Or nearest Supermarket is 15km. This is part of the charm of Waikawa Beach. It's just simply beautiful and untouched.

The SpaceMerely a 250 metre stroll to picturesque beach, this is a home-stay, in an unpretentious little New Zealand holiday bach. With 1 guest bedroom at present (the other one has a long term home stay). The cottage is small with not much living space, and it is a little bit dated and rustic, and the garden a wilderness of big trees and rampant daisies. But the locations is at once spectacular and restful. The shining stars of Te Horo by Horseback Beach Retreat, are spectacular on a moonless night - but they cannot compete with my two wonderful horses, Bo and Charlotte. I regularly take many people out riding to explore the beach. But it is not just about horses. A Kayak (soon 2 kayaks), and fishing gear is also available. (Everyone here seems to fish, but I have yet to catch one!) The rooms are cosy and sunny, and all home comforts supplied: Electric blanket, towels, soap and bath robes supplied. Step outside your bedroom into your own snug little space with chairs around a woodburner. This is guest space as my own "feet up" space is upstairs in my bedsit. There is 1 shared bathroom, which is small but adequate. Washing machine in the bathroom is also available for guests to use. Currently no TV but WiFi can be used to access TV channel content, streaming and on demand.(URL HIDDEN) A light breakfast is included in the tariff, and guests have access to the kitchen for tea & coffee-making. (A range of herbal teas, crackers and cheese is freely available). Meals (cooked breakfast, lunch, dinner or picnic basket) are happily prepared to order at an additional cost. A range of dinner options are available. Picnics: The beach is perfect for picnics and I will happily prepare for you a picnic basket - choose and arrange in advance, from a range of sandwiches & pie, cake, scones, juice, and hot thermos with soup/tea/coffee. Morning/afternoon Teas: Scones with cream and jam can be prepared at 45 minutes notice. BBQ Area: Two hammocks and a hooded gas BBQ at the bottom of the garden for all to use. Table and chairs too.(URL HIDDEN) Explore the beach, rivers and wetlands by horseback. Te Horo is a paradise for horse-enthusiasts. I started TE HORO BY HORSEBACK, with 2 beautiful horses and enjoy taking people of all ages, 7+ out to see the beach and wetlands. I take video clips and photos and post for guests to access and view on the f.b. page Te Horo by Horseback. The sound of the sea is a constant - whether a gentle lapping sound or the roar of the surf. A sea kayak & lifejacket is available for hire - delivered to beach or river and pick up as arranged. A wild beach with view of iconic Kapiti Island, and on a clear day you can see Mt Egmont (Mt Taranaki). A range of home cooked meals available. Roasts, rissottos and roulades! Braises and BBQ. Pizza or Pumpkin Soup. Home-bake bread. Big Kiwi Breakfasts. Pre-booking is advisable. Otaki town is great for outlet shopping. Waikanae shops include a state of the art Cinema, offering excellent food, wine and coffee. Otaki Gorge Road is worth a trip up to camp overnight at the end of the road, in DOC camping areas. Tent & gear transportation, camp setup/breakdown can be arranged, weather conditions permitting. Guest AccessWiFi available. Hooded gas BBQ, table and chairs & 2 hammocks at the bottom of the garden, under some shady trees(URL HIDDEN)Fishing rod with spinner lure, (folding chairs, blankets, etc) can be provided free of charge. Picnic basket loan empty, or negotiate to have it filled with goodies. Transport to the river mouth in the truck can be arranged. Access the kitchen any time for tea, coffee, cheese & biscuits free any time. Interaction with GuestsGuests can have their own space (while I retire upstairs to my bed-sit), or if you want I'm delighted to interact. I'm happy to drive you to the river mouth to do a spot of fishing, or for a scenic drive up into the Tararua forest park(URL HIDDEN)have enjoyed working in a range of hospitality operations - Cassimir Lodge, Oak Ridge Lodge (Wanaka) and then my own Red Rabbit Countryrest B&B on a sheep station in the Rangitikei. I enjoy cooking for guests, and taking people to show them some of the off-the-beaten-track places to go and things to do. Meals, mileage, horse-riding and kayak are charged extra. The NeighborhoodThe Te Horo Beach neighbourhood is a wee settlement made up of holiday homes and permanent residents - retirees and young families. Whitebaiters have been coming here for generations to scoop the tiny fish from the rivers and streams every season. At the beach, there are no shops, no McDonalds, no nightclubs, no camping grounds or motels. 4km up at the main road is Hyde Park, with café, hairdresser, art shops, garden centre, and a museum. Our wonderful Red House Restaurant burned down sadly, but the cafe at Hyde Park has begun evening meals. A range of very good restaurants, country bistros and cafe's are in Otaki and Waikanae. There are wineries in the area, but Ohau Wines is famous for their Ohau Gravels single vineyard sauvignon blanc. Cellar door sales and tastings on certain days. 7km north to Otaki is a thriving little town renowned for designer label outlet stores. People with more dash than cash flock there on weekends. And there are the markets on Sundays. 9km south is Waikanae, with a railway station and a great collection of shops and café. Take in a movie at Shoreline Cinema - sumptuous lounge-style seating, take coffee and cake or a glass of wine in to see the movie. Reikorangi Pottery Farm Park, once famous for its pottery, now has a animal farm park and riverside picnic area, and a popular rustic café / memorabilia display offering home-cooked food, including vegetarian. Getting Around75km from Palmerston North airport and 85km from Wellington airport. Buses and trains stop at Otaki and Waikanae. I can pick up and drop off guests by prior arrangement. There is a car rental business in Waikanae, 9kms south. Once you get here, then transportation becomes more leisurely - choose from horseback, or a mountain bike is available for getting around the streets and up to Hyde Park shops. Or my Rodeo can bounce you up to the river mouth for a spot of fishing. Other Things to Note1. A light breakfast included in tariff: Cereal, yogurt & fruit, toast, home-made jams and spreads. Juice, tea & coffee. Bottled water in 6 litre containers kept in fridge for drinking. 2. Access to all-day tea, coffee & biscuits. Cooked breakfasts can be prepared with advance warning, preferably the day before. Cooked breakfasts available $14 - 18 pp: 1) Eggs Benedict (muffin, bacon or salmon, 2 poached eggs and home made Hollandaise) - with or without steamed spinach. 2) Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon OR Bacon on Toast . 3) Fisherman's Breakfast - fish of the day panfried in butter with lemon & buttered toast. 3B) Kayaker's Breakfast: bacon, eggs, sausages, hash browns, tomatoes, mushrooms and lots of buttered toast. 4) Corn fritters & bacon stack on a hash brown, with Hollandaise 5) French toast with, bacon and banana, maple syrup or runny honey 6) Frosty Morning Porridge. A massive bowl of porridge with dark brown sugar, wheat germ, cream.

The SpaceThe bach was designed by architects Sam Kebbell and John Daish in 2001 – it's a sturdy little block house surrounded by a lawn which slopes down towards the beach. The well-equipped kitchen, dining and living space are combined downstairs with a mezzanine bedroom above. The bathroom is downstairs. A cleverly designed louvre over one window and a light curtain over the opposite window upstairs, allow for generous views of the sea and Kapiti Island. Extra guests are easily accommodated on a fold down sofa in the living room downstairs. One of the luxuries of staying in the bach is the continental breakfast provided for your stay. It includes homemade toasted muesli, fresh and poached organic fruit, yoghurt, tea, freshly ground coffee, homemade jams and a selection of breads, croissants and bagels. High quality bed linen and bathroom towels (but not beach towels) are also provided. To keep you warm in the winter, the woodburner (fire box) is set up ready for your arrival with plenty of firewood available as needed. Guest AccessGuests have the entire bach to themselves. Interaction with GuestsWe greet our guests personally on arrival and can then be reached by phone if needed. The NeighborhoodTe Horo Beach is a low-key, eclectic seaside community with a mixture of permanent and part-time residents. You will often have the sandy beach to yourself for as far as you can see. If you enjoy evening walks, you can watch the sun set behind Kapiti Island. Driftwood is washed down from the nearby Tararua mountains so there are plenty of places to rest and admire the view along the way. Getting AroundThe bach is only a 2 minute walk from the beach but there is no public transport to or from the bach or Te Horo beach so independent transport is essential. Off-street parking is available in the carport. The bach is 4km off SH1 (about 50mins by car from Wellington). Waikanae (10 minutes) and Otaki (10 minutes) are the closest towns for shopping. Other Things to NoteA portable barbecue and outdoor furniture are provided for warm days and nights outside in the summer. The bach is not suitable for young children because of the stairs leading up to the mezzanine bedroom. There are no shops at Te Horo Beach – the closest town for shopping is a 10 minute drive from the bach.

We are happy to share information of the region and give advice regarding sightseeing, excursions etc. The NeighborhoodIt is a quiet and peaceful area. Sleeping with an open window, hearing the sounds of the sea, the moo's of the nearby dairy cows or the birdsong of the birds in the trees around can be amazing. Take a short stroll to and along the beach with views of Kapiti Island, the Tararuas and even Mount Taranaki in the far distance on a clear day if you're lucky. Other Things to NoteOPTIONAL LINEN HIRE & CLEANING : Prices on this site do not include linen. This is OPTIONAL. Linen (towels, sheets, pillowcases and tea towels) are charged at $25 per person per stay (washing machine available during your stay). Message me if you wish to hire linen (includes one pair of King Sheets). The CLEANING FEE is also optional. If you don't wish to book cleaning, then you will be expected to leave the house as clean and tidy as you found it. Otherwise please message me separately for Cleaning costs (from $100-$150 depending on how many guests and how long your stay is).
