The SpaceA view of bushy Stewart island and sandhills graces the kitchen and the sound of the surf will whoosh you off to sleep at night. Our beach house is a special little retreat tucked away on the forgotten edge of nowhere - in the tradition of the NZ bach, everything is a little bit simpler than what you might have at home but still comfortable so you can enjoy a quiet, relaxed time by the sea. You can't see the sea from inside the house as it is sheltered by the sandhills, it is a short walk to the beach or you can go up to our simple plank seat at the edge of the garden and watch it from there.
Cottage accommodates four - (queen, single and roll-out trundle bed) but you may alternatively choose to sleep on fold-out queen sofa bed or fold out single armchair bed in the living room.
Kitchen well equipped for cooking meals
Laundry with tub and washing machine and an outdoor clothes line where you can dry your gear in the fresh country air! Guest AccessGuests are free to enjoy the whole house and our 1/4 acre of garden. The sandhills surrounding our property are public reserve, it is lovely wandering about them.
A short walk (or drive!)over a lane through the sand hills takes you right on to the beach, which broadens to a huge expanse of flat sand at low tide, stretching for miles around to Riverton. It’s great mountain biking, just walking, beachcombing or even driving your car. The surf is enjoyed by surfers, swimmers, paddlers, kite surfers and windsurfers. Good Otatara cafes and bars (Ziffs and The Cabbage Tree) are handy, as is Otatara Golf Course and particularly close, a golfer's gem; Oreti Sands 18-hole golf links (southernmost links course on the planet!). The Bluff Oyster festival in May offers great food and music, or try the Burt Munro Challenge (November) for unique motorbike races . If you're in travel mode, the Coronet Peak and Remarkables skifields, lakes, adventure activities and stunning scenery of Fiordland National Park, Te Anau and Queenstown are only 2 hours drive away, flights to beautiful Rakiura / Stewart Island leave from the local airport and you are right on the "Southern Scenic Route" if touring the lovely South Coast and Catlins. Less energetically, you might just prefer to watch the sun set into the ocean from the sandhill seat or relax by the woodburner with a hot cuppa and a good book! Interaction with GuestsWe live about two hours drive away in Te Anau, beside Fiordland National Park, so we won't be actually meeting our guests unless they pass through our way. You need to let yourselves in, look after yourselves and leave our house secure again on departure. However I am happy to pass on advice or book you for things to do in our lovely region, via email or phone. The NeighborhoodOreti Beach is a wild place; the weather changes with the seasons from summer's sun and pleasant heat to winter sleet and sometimes even snow, carried on blistering winds. Either way the place is spectacular for its huge bright sky, wide open space and and ocean views. On a full moon night you can see the sun sink into the sea as the moon rises over the sandhills. A Treat to Enjoy. Getting AroundInvercargill airport is 5 minutes drive away. (Domestic flights to and from destinations all around NZ). Other Things to NoteI have other Airbnb listings in the Southland region... (Please see Mountaineer Chalet, Fiordland and Little Zephyr on the Lake - both in Te Anau, 2 hours drive away ).
