The SpaceThe Studio is newly remodeled with a handsome central Ohia post and Silver Oak trim throughout. All the trim wood came from the property. The main sleeping space is a 10' X 10' loft space with sloping limited height ceiling. Downstair we have two couches, one opens into a comfortable queen size bed as need. There is a spacious, custom tiled bathroom and a covered deck to enjoy a sunny breakfast outdoors with views of the pasture, Ohia trees and the distant ocean. For entertainment we have a medium size TV and a good supply of DVD's. The sound system is bluetooth accessible for a wireless connection to the music on your phone, lap top or pad. A cell phone booster in the Studio allows connection to the outside world, as needed. Guest AccessGuests have access to Honokaa town filled with Hawaiian artifacts, the famous Waipio Valley, Hilo Town and the famous Waimea town with its two Saturday markets and the best Island restaurants. The road to the top of Mauna Kea is not far. World class beaches of the Kohala coast are 45 minutes away and America's most visited attraction, the Volcano National Park, is a one hour drive, that's if you don't spend an hour first, in old Hilo town. Interaction with GuestsOnly on an "as needed" basis. Baki lives in the yurt on the same property but is often at work or staying with Bailey in Puako. We will make contact with you before your arrival to give you directions and hopefully we will get a chance to meet you at the property at some point during your stay. Other important information for your stay is in the studio in a binder. Off grid living is the best!! We are always available by text or phone should you have any questions or problems. The NeighborhoodAs quoted from the recently published: "My Year in A Yurt: It was this studio we stayed in. We absolutely loved the place, the lush grass-coverd rolling hills, the stately Ohia trees dotting the land, the ocean in the distance. It was so peaceful, so quiet, so healing." Yes, you are far from the urban madding crowd in a peaceful, quiet and rural location. We are surrounded by green; green grass, green trees, and green plants everywhere with wild turkeys and the occasional wild pig running madly across the pasture. Nights are clear and stars are blinding. Rain is possible but more likely are 15 knot trade winds which keep the air clear and fresh at a cool 1800' elevation. Our place is an ideal location from which to explore all parts of the Big Island. However, it is a minimum 20 minute drive to the nearest town of any size, (Honokaa town) and 45 minutes to the best gold coast white sand beaches. Getting AroundYou will need your own car. Some limited public transportation, Heleon Bus service, is available at the bottom of the road to Hilo and Kona towns. Bike rentals are available in Honokaa. Other Things to NoteYou may find that on occasion a local rancher will drive down the road to water his cows in the acreage below our place. Also the neighbor dogs love to come visit our guests and you may see wild turkeys perched in the trees. General Excise Tax number available if requested

The SpaceWe provide an apartment in the main house for a farm stay vacation or short term rental, and have welcomed guests come from all over the world. Our typical visitors have been those looking for a more homegrown experience of Hawaii, who are excited about the range of activities around us. Our favorite suggestions include hiking in the nearby Waipio Valley and Kalopa State Park, going to First Friday in Honokaa Town or taking in a movie at our historic Honokaa Peoples Theatre. We especially recommend eating at the amazing Grandmas Kitchen, taking a day trip to Kohala, Kona, Hilo or Volcano…or just enjoying the quiet of the homestead, a relaxing hot tub, and a walk in the Paauilo countryside. This is a great place to visit and we are happy to be able to share it. Keolamauloa provides an apartment in the main house for a homestead stay – as a vacation or short term rental. The restful accomodation features a private entrance, fully equipped kitchen, living room, bathroom and two bedrooms (each with a double bed). Additional ammenities include laundry, wifi, foosball, tv/dvd, and the soothing sound of small waterfalls. Native banana, koa, kukui, and ohia trees provide the shade for hapu ferns, taro, awa and noni. On a stroll in the gardens and forest, you’ll visit the chickens hard at work, the pet pig, eating and resting, and the ocean beyond. The forest is filled with the sound of birds and the frequent view of a circling I’o (the endangered, native Hawaiian Hawk). These rates are for a minimum stay of 3 nights. There is a 20% surcharge for a stay of 2 nights. This is a smoke-free property / please leave your pets at home and enjoy ours during your stay. E Komo Mai! Come and enjoy! More about our farm: A work in progress… Laulima – “many hands” contribute to the restoration and care of Keolamauloa. Even the animals have their work and contribution. Our investment in the future is the restoration of the native forest and wildlife habitat. When we arrived at Keolamauloa in 1983 we faced the daunting task of reclaiming a treasure that had been neglected for many years. Guinea grass and scrub guava dominated what had once long ago been a native Ohia forest. Fallen cyprus trees were buried in the head-high weeds. Now 25+ years later we have cleared and planted over 300 native trees and plants. With the guidance and support of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), we are restoring the native forest and creating wildlife habitat to preserve and protect our fragile ecosystem. Our island was once the home of a people who lived on what they could hunt, gather and grow. Today we are challenged to return to a simpler way of life. Fresh, locally grown food for our family is the goal of our large gardens where we grow taro, sweet potato, banana, and a variety of other fruits and vegetables. Guest AccessGuests are invited to walk around the property and enjoy the pets and native trees. The cottage and art studio are private. Interaction with GuestsSally, Keith and Kia'i live in a cottage on the property. Sally will greet guests early in their stay. They can be reached by text as needed and available to provide additional local information. The NeighborhoodKeolamauloa is a 4 acre family homestead located on the Hamakua Coast of Hawaii Island, at a cool elevation of 1800 feet. The mountain neighborhood of Pa’auilo Mauka is dotted with verdant pasturelands and old family homesteads…evidence of the community’s rich agricultural and cattle ranching history. We moved to Keolamauloa in 1983, where we began the restoration of the existing historic buildings and grounds. They raised a large family and over the past 30 years, have worked to nurture and perpetuate a shared vision of sustainable living. Getting AroundVisitors usually find a rental car the best way to travel on the island. Bus transportation is available from Paauilo, 4 miles from Keolamauloa. Other Things to NoteThere are 2 other rentals in the main home, occupied by adults.

The SpaceAloha and welcome to our home! We hope that you find our spacious attached studio to be so much more than pictures will ever show. It is furnished and laid out to take every advantage of the beautiful landscape surrounding our home. There are several seating arrangements including a plush lounger, perfect to read a book or even to prop up an easel and to paint the morning sun rise over the canopy of trees in the horizon. We hope that you don't spend all of your day plopped in the grand queen-sized bed that stares off into the horizon; a morning jog along the nearby cane fields towards the fields of eucalyptus trees is just the perk you need to breathe in the sweet country air. Our kitchenette is well equipped with all the local spices you may need to prepare your treasured local produce found at nearby open markets to a homely meal. A flatscreen TV with local cable channels and a stereo system provide a base for your entertainment needs, as well as a few board games and books within our large walk-in closet. Interaction with GuestsMy family and I are absolutely in love with this home and we would love to share it with your loved ones as well. The Big Island is such an adventurous place, don't hesitate to ask us any questions you may have. The NeighborhoodOur home is located in the once bustling plantation town of Pa'auilo, about 40 minutes north of Hilo, 10 minutes from Honoka'a, 25 minutes south of Waimea, 30 minutes from Waipio Valley, 40 minutes from Waiakoloa and over an hour away from Kona. It is one of many villages along the Hamakua coast line. Where sugar cane was once harvested and plentiful, diversified agriculture and eucalyptus fields remain. Hamakua reaps the benefits of high rainfall providing for the lush landscape but remarkably has the most temperate climate of any region on the Big Island. Due to its rich volcanic soil, the Big Island produces some of the highest quality agriculture in the state. Coffee, macadamia nuts, and papaya are just a handful of its world reknowned crops. The Hamakua region itself is home to numerous waterfalls and specialty produce farms like mushrooms and vanilla. Waimea and its rolling hills houses the largest privately owned ranch in the country Parker Ranch; with access to a collection of locally sourced products it's easy to see that the Big Island has a rich tradition of farm to table dining culture. Other Things to NoteOur check in time is at 3pm with checkout at 11am. Please alert us of your travel itinerary so that we can best accommodate you. Although we do not provide laundry facilities, there are laundromats nearby. We do have some sports equipment such as golf clubs, kayaks, and snorkeling gear available for a nominal fee. If you are spending a day at the beach, we do have chairs, mats and cooler packs free for your use. Let us know what you need and we can make recommendations for some great locations to do all. The house has 1 bedroom and a designated sleeping area on an enclosed lanai. It sleeps 2 with extra sleeping arrangements for 2 children or familiar adults. This charming rental is truly a unique way to experience Hawaii with expansive ocean views and wide open spaces. This little house has personality plus with cathedral ceilings, warm lighting and a large wrap around lanai. The lanai on two sides is enclosed with windows from floor to ceiling. Dining is stunning with views of fields and tropical trees to the Pacific. The house sits on eight acres so there is privacy and quiet. Sliding glass doors and many windows offer a sense of being indoor-outdoor. There are no stairs to navigate. All is kept clean. There is 1 bathroom, and as often in Hawaii homes, there is the option of an outdoor shower with a colorful garden to provide privacy. The surrounding area is lush and beautiful. The quiet winding roads are perfect for long walks through farmlands, flowers, coffee, guava trees. In some spots both the mountain Mauna Kea and the ocean can be seen. Wild pheasants and turkeys even a few peacocks scurry along the roads. The location is a central stepping off point to explore the island -- the volcano to the east and world class beaches to west less than an hour away. The historic Honokaa Town and gorgeous Wiapio valley are nearby and Kalopa Park created to protect native species is just 4 miles away. There are beach chairs, snorkel gear, swimming noodles, boogie board, and beach towels provided. A fenced in area adjoining the lanai is available for visiting pets to enjoy. The pond feature has been emptied and now contains potted orchids. This is to minimize mosquitos due to recent related problems on the island.

This little house is small and simple with ceramic tile floors and open beamed ceilings. It's clean, bright and private. One bedroom with a queen bed, a full bath, complete kitchen and living room area provide a comfortable home away from home. There is also a laundry room with full sized washer & dryer. This house is perfect for a couple or a couple with a young child. Wake to the sounds of birds chattering & have your morning coffee outside watching the chickens & wild turkeys. WiFi, outdoor grill, beach chairs, coolers & some snorkel equipment are provided. Paauilo is still truly out of the busy city areas and offers a taste of old Hawaii. We are at about the 2000' level on the slope of Mauna Kea. This is an area of small farms & country roads. You can walk for miles on these back roads. Our daytime temps are generally between 75 & 85 degrees. Though these past couple of years we have begun to experience some days in the 90's. Nighttime temps tend to be in the 60's with some summer nights perhaps edging towards 70. The cooler evenings definitely lend themselves to good sleeping temperatures. (Which we always enjoy after a long day in the sunshine at the beach.) We can get rain but can't really predict when that might be. That's not a problem for us as we like to have things growing around us, but do want you to know it can happen! Paauilo is a great location to stay if you want to explore the Hamakua coast and anywhere on the northern side of the island. Honokaa and Waipio Valley are very close by. A scenic drive on Hwy 19 will take you to Hilo to the east, or Kamuela, Hawi and a choice of beautiful beaches to the west. 10-15 minutes away is the historic town of Honokaa, with restaurants, shopping, a small grocery store and a beautifully renovated movie theater that offers first run movies and live events. Honokaa has also recently started having a monthly 'First Friday'. The first Friday of every month the stores stay open late & there is live music, lots of great food and various other entertainment. It's a fun, local event that's definitely worth checking out if you're here on a First Friday night. We also are lucky enough to have on site professional massages available in the cabin - unwind even more after a long day at the beach. This is a cozy house, a wonderful place to welcome you home after a day at the beach or sightseeing. It's a great place to tuck away and simply enjoy the beauty of rural Hawaii.
