It is one of three cottages on the property and sits behind The Steinbeck Cottage and next to The Traveler's Cottage. This studio has a unique and rich literary history, having belonged to John Steinbeck in the early 1940's. He used it as his writing studio and worked on novels including The Sea of Cortez while living here. It has been renovated to pay homage to the period and history of the property. It has a masculine and sophisticated, yet romantic feel. Guest AccessGuests will enjoy a dedicated outdoor sitting area, beautiful views of the garden, and peeks of the ocean. Interaction with GuestsWhile The Writer's Studio is one of the three cottages on the property, it offers plenty of privacy and has its own dedicated outdoor area. For larger groups, The Writer's Studio can be rented with The Traveler's Cottage which is next door on the same property (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1003412), and/or with The Steinbeck Cottage (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1909416). The NeighborhoodThe property is in a quiet residential neighborhood in Pacific Grove. It offers plenty of street parking. As for the city, Pacific Grove has been called “Butterfly Town U.S.A.,” “The Most Romantic City in the U.S.,” “A Dreamy California Destination, ” as well as an idyllic place to get married, to honeymoon or to just hang out. Some of it is self-proclaimed, some the acclaim of people who have actually visited Pacific Grove. You will find Pacific Grove on the very tip of the scenic, tree-shrouded Monterey Peninsula with a rocky coastline and an ambiance of charm, grace and beauty. Founded in the 1870s as a Methodist summer retreat, Pacific Grove still bears the look and feel of yesteryear. As you stroll the residential streets admiring the charm of home after home, you will notice little plaques on many of the homes that bear the name of the original owner and the year in which it was built. To qualify for a plaque from the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, a structure must look like it did when it was originally built. Among its visitors are brightly colored orange-and-black Monarch butterflies, who overwinter in Pacific Grove after traveling up to 2,000 miles, arriving by the thousands starting in October, peaking around Christmas and departing by March. Besides its scenic beauty and idyllic neighborhoods, Pacific Grove offers an eclectic downtown experience, with small boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, antique stores and more. Other vibrant shopping areas are along Central Avenue at the entrance to Pacific Grove from Cannery Row and at the top of Forest Avenue on Forest Hill. Getting AroundThe Writer's Studio is centrally located and a short walk from many scenic destinations. It is located a half mile from The Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, as well as downtown Pacific Grove. Lover's Point beach is just one mile away and downtown Monterey is two miles away. There are many fantastic restaurants, activities and shops in the area. Other Things to NoteThe city of Pacific Grove requires a 10% city occupancy tax for all reservations. This will be an additional charge above the listed daily rate and the payment request will be added to your reservation, once the reservation is made. The cottage is licensed with the city of Pacific Grove.

The SpaceOur light-filled cottage in P.G.'s historic retreat area is just steps from shops, cafes and restaurants and a five-minute walk from Lover’s Point and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, 2 tickets to which we provide! We fell in love with this charming cottage when we first laid eyes on it and we hope you’ll call it home for a short time. Built in 1905 and fully remodeled in 2000, the cottage has hardwood and tile floors, maple cabinets, a modern kitchen, skylights, and an updated bathroom with the original, claw-foot maid’s tub. The wrap-around garden features hydrangea, alstroemeria and poppies. The quiet of this one-way street is broken only by the sound of seagulls and, on occasion, the distant barks of harbor seals and sea lions at the beach. Our city license limits us to no more than three adult occupants (anyone age 18 or over) at any one time; guests may park no more than two vehicles on our street. The Queen-sized bed in the bedroom, which has an ensuite bathroom, sleeps two adults and a baby or sm all child. The deep sofas in the living room can accommodate two people. The loft is for owner's use only. Our PG Short-term Rental License (so we can pay appropriate taxes to the city) is #0193. We charge extra for more than 2 guests. We provide guests with a password for our WiFi network. There is no television but there are plenty of books, beaches, tide pools, otters, whales, and the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium to entertain you. We're eager to make sure you're comfortable and settled in. We are happy to answer questions about the little house, the friendly neighborhood, parking and public transportation. We provide a guide book with recommendations for restaurants, cafes, shops, golf courses, and museums, and how to reach them. Here's a preview: The Red House (great breakfast, brunch and desserts) Pacific Grove Market (fresh fish and groceries) Passionfish Restaurant (terrific seafood) Pavel’s Bakery (try the chocolate chip cookies!) The Bookstore/Cafe (for your morning lattes and pastries) The Habitat (cool vintage finds, furniture, and knick-knacks) The City of Pacific Grove was founded as a Methodist retreat and gradually grew into a town with full-time residents, rich in history. In contrast to Monterey, which grew up around the fishing industry, PG was a retreat for city folks looking to escape the cold summers of San Francisco. It's a small town full of quaint Victorian architecture and cottages like ours built on lots originally sold as sites for camping tents. Next door, Asilomar Park and Conference Center, designed by famed architect Julia Morgan, began as a retreat for the YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association). The Point Pinos Lighthouse is the oldest continually operating lighthouse on the west coast. The sheltered white sand beach at Lovers Point is idea for families with small children, a jumping off point for scuba divers and a favorite photo spot for vacationing newlyweds. Each September a popular Triathalon attracts swimmers, runners, bicyclists, and enthusiastic spectators. Close by, there's the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Concours d'Elegance, the Pebble Beach Golf Courses, and so much more. Our cottage is surrounded by natural beauty. You can walk, run, or bike along the beach. There’s also a beautifully manicured 9-hole public golf course for those who seek a quieter workout at considerably lower fees than those of more famous, nearby courses. This is where John Steinbeck lived and earned his reputation as a writer of such novels as Grapes of Wrath, Cannery Row, and East of Eden. We are continually inspired by his creative work (we are both writers) and we hope you'll find the same guidance while you're here. There's a lovely Farmer's Market on Mondays from 4pm to 7pm where you'll find delicious local produce, nuts, and fresh baked bread. We’re on a quiet one-way street. Please be sure not to block our neighbors' driveways. When arriving late into the evening, please note that the houses are very close together so our neighbors appreciate your keeping noise (including car doors) to a minimum. The local shuttle runs along Lighthouse (half block away), and you can take it all the way to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Cannery, the Monterey Hotel (or you can walk the Bay trail, sharing it with bicyclists, families with kids in strollers, and folks walking their dogs). We provide a lock box so you can enter and exit at your convenience. The cottage is free standing, so you share no walls with anyone else. There's also an extra lock box in case you lose your key. We're only a text message or phone call away, so please don't hesitate to contact us! Guest AccessWe provide guests with a password for our WiFi network so you can stream movies on your laptop. There is a small stereo/CD changer in the bedroom closet. There is no television but there are plenty of beaches, tide pools and otters along the shore and jellyfish as the Monterey Bay Aquarium to keep you busy. The loft is for owner's use only; disregarding this rule would jeopardize our STR license with the City of Pacific Grove. Interaction with GuestsWe're eager to make sure you're comfortable and settled in. We are happy to answer questions about the little house, the friendly neighborhood, parking and public transportation. Tell us what you're looking for, and we'll make appropriate recommendations for restaurants, cafes, shops, golf courses, and museums, and how to reach them. We’re on a quiet one-way street. Please close car doors softly at night and be sure not to block our neighbors' driveways. The local shuttle runs along Lighthouse all the way to the Aquarium. Getting AroundThe Traveler's Cottage is centrally located and a short walk from many scenic destinations. The beautiful bathroom features white subway tiles in the shower and blue Moroccan lantern tiles on the floor. The cottage has cable TV, DVD player and wireless internet. The cottage is approximately 900 square feet. It is original architecture from the 1920’s and has short doorways throughout the cottage. Taller guests will need to mind their heads. It is one of three cottages on the property and next to The Writer's Studio and in front of The Traveler's Cottage. This cottage has a unique and rich literary history, having belonged to John Steinbeck in the early 1940's. It has been renovated to pay homage to the period and history of the property. Guest AccessThe front yard offers a dedicated outdoor sitting area with a fire pit for conversation and warmth. Interaction with GuestsWhile The Steinbeck Cottage is one of the three cottages on the property, it offers plenty of privacy and has its own dedicated outdoor area. For larger groups, The Steinbeck Cottage can be rented with the other two cottages on the historic Steinbeck property, The Writer's Studio (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1325979), and The Traveler's Cottage (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1003412). You will see the plaque in the front of The Steinbeck Cottage. The SpaceNo need to fight over who gets the ocean view in this fabulous 6-bedroom, 4-bath home! With 270 degrees of blue-water views, four of the bedrooms have full views of the Pacific and Monterey Bay. The fifth and sixth bedrooms have a quiet, courtyard view just in case somebody doesn't like to go to sleep to the sound of the waves, or watch the moon sinking into the sea at night. We are minutes from Carmel and Cannery Row in Monterey, and Pebble Beach is our neighbor. We have a fully stocked gourmet kitchen - and the cook gets an ocean view, too. Dining table seats 10, 14 with extension. Foosball, pinball, Legos, ping pong and lots of other toys for the kids. Steinway grand piano for the musically inclined. Off-street parking for six cars is available. The Spanish Bay Club is a lovely 20-minute walk away, along the world-famous Pacific Grove recreation trail. Guest club privileges for up to four people for tennis, exercise and weight room, heated pool, spa, sauna, steam, poolside dining, massage and beauty treatments are available. Surf, snorkle, or stroll the beautiful beaches and coves. Make S'mores at a bonfire on our secluded beach. Nice restaurant just two blocks away. Fabulous Pacific Grove golf course is across the street. Downtown Pacific Grove is 1.5 miles away, with movie theater, farmers' market, restaurants, coffee houses, antiques, shops, bakeries, natural history museum. The world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium and American Tin Cannery outlets are about 2 miles away. This remarkable property is perfect for family reunions, corporate retreats, seminars or, of course, a romantic hideaway! Pricing varies according to length of stay: $1100 per night for 2 or 3 nights; $1000 per night for 4 or 5 nights, $900 per night for 6 or 7 nights. Guests in excess of 8 will be charged $100 per person per night. Special event pricing and mid-week discounts may apply. Guest AccessEverything except the caretaker's quarters, which has its own entrance and parking area. Interaction with GuestsI meet every group of guests personally to give them a tour of the house, the garage-door opener, the combination to the locks, the guest passes to the Monterey Aquarium, and show them how to work everything. It is so much more relaxing than spending your vacation trying to figure out how to work the TV components, the hot tub, or the pinball machine. The NeighborhoodI call Pacific Grove "Iowa with a Beach". It is a really friendly small town with everything you need within 1 mile of the house. We have a lovely Farmers Market, Natural History Museum, Movie Theater, shops, restaurants, wildlife and butterflies! In May 2015, Trip Advisor chose Pacific Grove as one of the top 12 Scenic Destinations in all of the United States. You will love it here! Getting AroundThe Monterey Salinas Transit bus stop is one block away. In the summer, the MST trolley operates out of the same stop, and is free.
