Our wee house is perfect for trainspotters, musos and those looking for a charming and creative place to retreat and enjoy life's simple pleasures. We will just be going about our lives, pottering around. Happy to have meals together if you'd like, if you pitch in for ingredients. I'm a good cook (or so hubby says) and cook a lot of vegetarian food. We have a lovely wee girl, who is two. We have a guest cat, but Lola can be shooed away back to her home if you prefer. Not suitable for those with allergies. The NeighborhoodOur village is so charming - everything is quaint and relaxed, and the people are really friendly. A great place to relax and recharge your batteries. We are close to the train so you don't need a vehicle. We recommend treating yourself to Noi's Thai massage and a Happy Go Lucky hairdo from Selena. Also the deli Porkwich and carrot cake are amazing, and the Perching Parrot's coffee is sublime. Getting AroundThe train goes every 30 mins, and takes 45 mins into town. Driving takes about 35 mins (outside of heavy traffic times). Some people cycle, but they're a bit crazy. Other Things to NoteWe can vacate the house if you would like to have the whole house. It will cost around $180 per night, but will need to be arranged well in advance. We have trains nearby, and they run all night so bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper :-)

There is also a fantastic general store which has just about everything , and a small fruit and vege shop. Queen Elizabeth park begins at the northern end of the village with a labyrinth of excellent walking and biking tracks. There is also a new sealed bike track linking Paekakariki to Raumati South. The SpaceThis home offers the proximity of the sea but with the shelter of green bush and garden. Mirabai House is tranquil and beautiful, with an abundance of bird life and plenty of decks to enjoy the all-day sun. The room inside the house has a double bed and a large mirrored wardrobe plus shelf space. Other singe guests can use the large cabin in the garden - it is a lovely simple space made, and smelling of, macrocarpa wood. The beds are simple mattresses on the floor and there are no toilet facilities in the cabin, and so this is for you if you like simplicity and your own space. If you have a child, we can put a mattress in the small room in the house next to the double room, again with a mattress on the floor. There is off-street parking; your car cannot be seen from the road. If you would like a personal retreat, renting the beautiful garden macrocarpa cabin separate from the house is an option and the fee negotiable, depending on your length of stay and what you are wanting in the way of meals and looking after! Guest AccessIf you are a single or couple, as well as your private room, you have sole access to a beautiful reading/writing room with its own sunny deck. You can use the living room, 3 other decks, and the kitchen for cups of tea etc. The kitchen is not available for you to cook your own meals, however you can request delicious home-made breakfasts and/or dinners, for an extra charge, if you wish to stay in. At the moment airbnb has no facility to charge a guest for breakfasts, although they are looking into it, so at the moment that is a cash payment of $15 per person for breakfast (home-made muesli, organic yoghurt, fresh fruit, toast, teas and plunger coffee), and $25 per person for a delicious two-course evening meal. Interaction with GuestsYour host (usually me, Rachel) will be around to make sure you have everything you need, and to make any meals you've requested. I'm not someone who will want to talk at you, or do too much small talk, but I'm warm and friendly, and very good company! The NeighborhoodPaekakariki is a beautiful and friendly village. The beach is 350m away, and QEII park about 10-15 minutes walk. The house is situated adjacent to the railway line but otherwise looks out onto a mainly rural view. Guest AccessFull access to house except owners bedroom. Interaction with GuestsI am a socialble type so if you need anything just let me know. I have a good knowledge of the local area - especially the local walking tracks that are less than 5 minutes away. I also love fishing and outdoor activities so am well versed in that area too. As an ex cafe owner I know where is good to eat out too. The NeighborhoodClose to beach but not on it - 7 minute walk or 2 minutes by car. The SpaceThis is a unique 110 year old cedar house with many interesting features, including 24 panes of ocean-facing glass set in original mariner's steel. It's perched on a sand dune overlooking Kapiti Island and the South Island. The front area is airy and spacious, the back rooms are smaller, cozy and warm. The house has a long history of artists and musicians and quite a bohemian vibe. Guest AccessThere's street or garage parking, both free. The access is up 57 steep steps, not advisable for anyone with mobility issues. It's worth it once you get here! And I'm happy to help with luggage carting :-) Interaction with GuestsWe like to let guests decide their level of interaction. If you'd like a quiet, private time, let us know. Otherwise we quite enjoy chatting and sharing meals, music and common spaces. The NeighborhoodPaekakariki is a real village, cut off by the escarpment and the ocean to the south, and the lovely Queen Elizabeth Park to the north. The beach is stunning and often empty except for a few walkers. Inland the vegetation is exotic looking with pohutukawa, puka, flax, native grasses, kohekohe trees and ti kouka. Bird life is thriving with the tui and fantails being regular and vocal visitors. The small town hall regularly hosts bands - and generally people bring their own drinks and sit around card tables and almost always have a bit of a dance. The pub also has open mic nights which are invariably entertaining and attract performers from surprisingly far afield. There are two lovely cafes, a pub with a tiny cinema, and several shops. The many opportunities for outdoor adventures nearby are also an enticement, including a new cycleway and an escarpment walk, many tramping and river activities within half an hour's drive... And the ocean! Swimming, surfing, body boarding, kayaking, kite surfing, snorkeling nearby. Getting AroundOur place is 4 minutes walk from the train station and the State Highway bus stop, which most major busses will stop at. Paekakariki has 1600 people - so you can walk anywhere you want to go. Major grocery stores are one train stop away, but our lovely shop and two veggie places sell just about everything one could want. Other Things to NoteBreakfast supplies are included - just let us know what you like and we'll do our best to leave it out for you in the morning. This - and coffee, tea, and other amenities are included. If you'd like us to prepare other meals, picnics etc, there will me a small additional cost. Wifi is free. International guests may want to note that New Zealand buildings are on the whole not as well insulated and warm as places in the northern hemisphere. Central heating is uncommon. Pioneering spirit aside - if you find yourself chilly, we have individual heaters for the rooms and heat the main area with a cozy wood fire on cold days.

The SpaceThis is just a nice little cottage, wooden throughout, with a happy vibe. Guest AccessI will meet you on arrival. Interaction with GuestsCan always get me on the phone. The NeighborhoodPaekakariki is a small village 50 mins by train from Wellington. Drive? Allow an hour too since things seem to be busier these days. But yeh, 45mins is still safe. Getting AroundParking on the property for one vehicle plus on the roadside all good. The driveway is a bit sloped and so is the road so not so good for campervans. Other Things to NoteThis place is very cute but it isn't cute and neat, it is cute and lived-in. As in it needs some work like some re-grouting here and a bit of tidying up there. But it is fully safe :) Note I do have a small fridge with a tiny freezer, so I tend to buy fresh organic fruit and veges at the local shops almost daily. And please note I do not have a dishwasher either!
