It takes an average of 1-1.5 hours from Hilo Airport and 1.5-2 hours to Kona Airport, depending on your speed (we have a minimum, 40, and a maximum speed limit, 55, on the highway). Please make sure to pick up main food items, specialty/dietary foods, and favorite brands in Hilo or Kona as the local convenience store has limited supplies.

The best of Old Hawaii and a tropical resort setting in a bright, comfortable one bedroom studio condo with an ocean view. Colony One at the Sea Mountain offers essential visitor vacation amenities - a comfortable and well equipped condo, pool, hot tub, gas grills and more - combined with being within easy walking distance of one of Hawaii's most famous beaches - the black sand beach at Punalu'u Beach Park. The beaches on the Big Island are as diverse as the Hawaii itself - green, black and white sands greet the visitor as you explore the island. The Punalu'u black sand beach is about as famous as they come - visitors come from around the world to see the wide beach frequented by honu - Hawaiian green sea turtles - who will be your daily beach and swimming companions. The beach is life-guarded and features several locations for swimming, snorkeling, floating or just relaxing in the sun. Being able to walk to the beach from the condo - in just a few minutes - is one of the best features you could find and a bit of a rarity on much of the Big Island. Our condo was completely refreshed with new paint, appliances, fixtures and furniture in May 2015. We hope you'll find it to be a great base for your stay on the Big Island. As the only condo complex in the Ka'u District, these 75 units in a Polynesian style offer privacy with a tropical landscape in the middle of the longest stretch of undeveloped coast in all Hawaii - 90 miles of nothing but ocean and the most beautiful and varied coast line in the state. Two small towns are within 10 minutes in each direction (Naalehu, south, Pahala to the north) and offer visitor amenities - Naalehu has several restaurants (one of our favorites is Hana Hou) and the famous Punaluu Bakery (a must stop for every visitor), a hardware store, Shaka's bar, post office and twice-weekly farmer's market. Pahala has an incredibly efficient grocery store - the Mizuno Superette, a bank, churches, post office, hospital and a Long's Drug Store. Both locations have gas stations and a few other local businesses to explore. Every visitor to Hawaii Island will want to see Kilauea in Volcanos National Park. The condo is located 30 minutes from the park and is the only location near to the park that offers a resort vacation amenities. Before buying a place in Hawaii, we also stayed in Kailua-Kona and Hilo. And after checking out other areas multiple times, we decided that the rural life in Ka'u District was the best fit for us. On each of our many trips, we found that our adventurous vacation style took us all over the island - Hilo, Volcanoes, Hamakua Coast, Waimea, Hawi, Ka Lae (South Point) - and that this one of a kind (really - there are not any others in Ka'u) complex had the location and lifestyle that fit us best. If you are looking for a riotous night-life...well, you will not find it here. In fact, you might be on the wrong island for the party experience; even Kailua-Kona rolls up the streets fairly early most nights (Try Oahu & Wakiki for big city bustle and hustle). We're not located in a city and the nearby towns are just as quiet at night . The pace of life here is slow, quiet - and for us, perfect...perfect for relaxation, exploration and the personal recharge you are looking for. Everyone has a chance to sit and watch the sea breeze blow the palm trees in the tradewinds or be awed by the millions of stars in the blackness of Ka'u's night sky. Kailua-Kona is an hour and thirty minute drive; Hilo is an hour away - that's each way. We suggest stocking up on your groceries when you arrive. None of the units at Sea Mountain have air conditioning, with the ocean trade winds, it's just not necessary. Our condo has three ceiling fans (two inside - living room and bedroom, one on the lanai) and generous natural ventilation with Hawaiian louvered windows throughout. We have found that often, with the fan on at night, you may need a blanket for sleeping...and of course a blanket is provided, along with some extra pillows, should you want or need either. Colony One offers public Wi-Fi...and it's OK for light web use in the general areas or at the pool and so forth. However, we have found that private high-speed internet is a requirement for us for personal travel and, as such, have it available for your private use in the condominium. No sharing, not public. The condo has a nice cable TV package and we added a web enabled Blu-ray player for you to use your Netflix, Amazon or Hulu accounts - or any of the more than 200 entertainment apps on the device. Enjoy a well equipped and efficient kitchen, relax and enjoy a movie or your favorite book and enjoy ocean view meals on the lanai. As a ground floor end unit, the location is private with extra end garden tropical plantings. On the rare days when you would want to eat inside (we have only eaten inside a couple of times) there is a built in island with two stools. The separate bedroom has louvered bi-fold doors for privacy. The queen bed has a memory foam topper and we think you'll find it to be very comfortable. There's under bed storage for luggage, two three drawer nightstand dressers and a large double closet. The spacious, well lit bathroom has a marble and glass block walk in shower, a ton of counter space and large mirror. Hairdryer under the sink. We have added extra towel rods for your bath and beach towels to dry, hooks in the shower for wet swim suits...and hopefully just about everything you'll need while you are there. White towel sets are provided for your use in the condo and over-sized red and white beach towels are provided for pool and beach use. Until we bought Tommy Bahamas beach chairs, we didn't know what we were missing! They are great...really! So, you'll find two beach chairs, beach mats, some snorkel gear and a cooler in the upstairs closet. We include starter paper products, trash bags, dish soap, hand soap and similar basic items for your stay. Our Hawaii condo is our piece of paradise and we have worked to make it a place we enjoy staying. We're proud to share it with new friends as it becomes your Aloha place and you let Hawaii happen in your life. Rates are plus Hawaii general excise tax and transient accommodation tax (total of 13.42%). Your only additional fee is a once per stay cleaning charge. The monthly rate (30 nights) is $2249 plus tax; please contact us for a stay of 28 nights or more. Flipkey adds an additional fee for their service, we have no control over this. Thanks for looking and we hope to hear from you! Our Hawaii Tax License number is W(phone: hidden)

Welcome to your home away from home, Hale Ke Kai, “where the land and sea meet.” You will come to find out why so many local residents and visitors call it one of the best units at Colony I. We feel honored to have the opportunity to show you the reasons so many have fallen in love with the islands. Those reasons are here to be found in abundance. The Big Island is our home and we go to great lengths to help you feel at home too. This spacious and beautifully furnished one bedroom condo is single level with absolutely no steps. Although it is considered a condo, there are no upstairs or downstairs neighbors, only the back wall of the closet is shared. Hale Kekai is unit #23 in the Sea Mountain Resort. The lanai (patio) is very private. Speaking of the lanai, “Wow!” is the usual response. Sweeping unobstructed ocean views that blend gently without interruption into an incredible mountain view. This is Hawaii, your Hawaii. A high quality king size bed in the master bedroom will combine with the soft breezes and gentle lull of the waves to bring calm wondrous dreams of the beauty of the real Hawaii. The living and dining areas also have sweeping ocean views and are outfitted tastefully yet comfortably as this is as much our home as yours. The living area also boasts a fold out sofa bed that we have slept on ourselves and is very comfortable. The kitchen with range, oven, microwave, full size fridge, coffee/espresso maker, dishwasher, and small appliances is well stocked with quality flat ware, a variety of teas, and condiments and spices to get you started on the meal of your choice. The bathroom has a cavernous granite tiled shower that is an easy step inside. We love every corner of this place and believe you will too. Enjoy some world famous Ka’u Coffee on the lanai or hang out at the pool or hot tub with new found friends, either way you will be glad to have found one of the world’s hidden gems. Punaluu Black Sand Beach, consistently voted one of the Top Ten Black Sand Beaches in the World, is only a few minutes’ walk away. Sunbathe beneath the palms, snorkel with turtles, or watch them haul up on the beach. Enjoy some golf or tennis right next door or for the more adventuresome, hike out either direction and re-discover Hawaiian historical sites (please show due respect to all archaeological sites and observe proper viewing distance and rules regarding all marine creatures). Hale Ke Kai is perfect for any family or couple seeking the trip of a lifetime. A secluded, yet accessible wonder that will be remembered. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is only 30 minutes away, making Punaluu the closest ocean front lodging. Hike the volcano by day and relax in the hot tub under the stars by night. The pool and hot tub have wonderful ocean views and you can barbeque fresh island fish or local grass fed beef on one of the quality barbeques next to the pool. Our special vision for Hale Ke Kai is for people who may be less able to travel to have the chance to visit one of the best kept secrets in the world…and be comfortable. Hale Ke Kai has no steps, no stairs, just a little bump at the front and sliding doors. This means couples where one partner is movement impaired or a family with aging parents can still share moments of beauty and peace. Our goal is for every family member, including children, to feel safe and at home. Should you or your loved one have special needs, please contact us, we will make every attempt to accommodate your needs. standard cleaning and restocking fee Hawaii Tax 13.25 % Hale Ke Kai is located in the Colony One condominiums at Sea Mountain Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. Punaluu Black Sand Beach is a few minutes walk away. Punaluu offers swimming and snorkeling at one of the "Top Ten Black Sand Beaches in the World." Colony One is surrounded by the southernmost golf course in the United States and also has tennis courts minutes away. There are day hikes along the coast where you can see the beautiful coastline of Ka'u with a mountain backdrop provided by Mauna Loa. There are many archaeological sites and petroglyphs (Pre-contact drawings carved in the lava) along the coastal trail. The nearby town of Pahala is about 10 minutes (East or "Hilo side" as the locals say) away and has a small convenience store, bank, Post Office, and Pharmacy. Pahala is an old sugar plantation town and still has the local flair that other towns can only imitate. A short drive from Pahala is the Ka'u Coffee Mill recognized as one of the best roasteries in the world. The Mill is a must visit for every lover of coffee, macadamia nuts, or beautiful artwork. Kathleen Kam's wonderful scenes of Ka'u adorn the Guest Shop and the staff provide free tours of the Coffee Mill, Roastery, Drying Area, and the Coffee Fields. Free samples are available. Continuing up the road a few minutes leads you to the splendor of Wood Valley and the Tibetan Buddhist Temple, Nechung Dorje Draying Ling. Walk the temple grounds and feel the peace of this special place. Volcanoes National Park is only 30 minutes away with lava viewing and excellent hiking or walking trails for all levels. Next to the National Park is the town of Volcano. Volcano has a great local art center and has a number of restaurants to choose from, all the way from sandwiches at Lehua Cafe to the posh evening meal Kilauea Lodge. Because the Big Island is...well, an island, you can also go the other way (West or as the locals say "Kona side") about 15 minutes from Hale Ke Kai. Along the way you will pass Honuapo Beach Park with it's Hawaiian Fish Ponds used to catch fish with the tide in days gone by. As you go up the hill to Naalehu (or when you return to Punaluu) be certain to stop at the Scenic Point. The view is one of a kind...the longest undeveloped coastline in Hawaii and probably the world. Naalehu has a large grocery store, the Punaluu Bakery (great Malasadas), and restaurants to choose from. Head further "Kona side" and visit South Point, the southernmost point in the U.S.. Green Sands Beach is a hike, or 4wd trip away from South Point (you can also hire local people to drive you out). Green Sands is famous for its olivine cliffs and sand and is a unique spot to swim in the shore break or dig your feet into the warm sand. The Big Island and Ka'u abound with activities that will keep everyone in your group wanting to stay longer, and we hope that Hale Ke Kai plays an integral part of a truly memorable visit.

We think you'll find it to be a just right base of operations for your exploration of the Big Island. Situated among 75 Polynesian style units that offer a private setting with great aesthetics and beautifully landscaped settings in the middle of the longest stretch of undeveloped coast in all Hawaii - 90 miles of nothing but ocean and the most beautiful and varied coast line in the state. Guest AccessEntry is via a coded lock box. We'll email the code to you approximately two weeks prior to your arrival. Interaction with GuestsWe are available to our guests by phone, text or email at any time. If there is something urgent, and you can't reach us, we have a local contact on the Island. We have been part of the Airbnb community for several years and believe that good communication before, during and after your trip is essential to a good experience. Don't hesitate to contact us. The NeighborhoodTwo small towns are within 10 minutes in each direction (Naalehu, south, Pahala to the north) and offer visitor amenities - Naalehu has several restaurants (one of our favorites is Hana Hou) and the famous Punaluu Bakery (a must stop for every tourist!), a hardware store, Shaka's bar (southernmost bar in the USA), post office and twice-weekly farmer's market. Pahala has an incredibly efficient grocery store - the Superette and a Long's drugstore. There's a hospital in Pahala and both locations have gas stations and a few other local businesses to explore. The big agricultural attractions in the area are coffee and macadamia nuts; you'll see the farm lands all around. There are some local farms who offer tours and several coffee growers who offer tastings and direct from grower sales. South Point (Ka Lae) and the Green Sand Beach (it really is green!) are located within about a half hour drive. Every visitor to Hawaii Island will want to see the world's most active volcano - Kilauea - in Volcano National Park. This condo is located 30 minutes from the park entrance and is the only location so close to the park that offers our resort-setting and guest amenities. Your park admission is good for 7 days and we find that we'll return more than once to either hike or see the caldera glowing at night. Volcanoes has some good dining options and the Big Island's only vineyards and winery are surrounded by the National Park. There is no city here. It's why we love it. As a boy, I was regaled with stories of Old Hawaii told my great Uncle and grandfather - both of whom lived in Hawaii in the early 1940s and later. As an adult, and finally visiting Oahu, I was surprised to not find the version of Hawaii as explained to me - and firmly planted in my mind's eye - by Uncle Joe and my grandfather. Flash forward to 2008 and our first visit to Ka'u and Sea Mountain. Like many visitors, we decided to rent here for a few days so we could be close to Volcanoes NP for exploration and repeat visits. We were so surprised to find the slice of real Hawaii that still exists. There is not a lot here - unless one counts peace, quiet, dark sky-filled nights, friendly people and their history as "things". Then, in that case, Ka'u is overflowing with Hawaii's real bounty. Getting AroundIt's necessary to have a car. This is a rural area in the heart of Volcano, Coffee and Macadamia Nut country. It is a great location for exploring the rest of the island. You can fly into either Kona or Hilo (Hilo is one hour, Kona about 90 minutes). There is essentially no public transportation (one bus, one time a day...) Other Things to NoteBefore buying this place in Hawaii, we stayed in Kailua-Kona and Hilo. After checking out other areas, we decided the Ka'u District is the best fit for us. On each of our many prior trips, we found that our adventurous vacation style took us all over the island - Hilo, Volcanoes, Hamakua Coast, Waimea, Hawi, South Point (Ka Lae) - and only this one of a kind (really - there are not any other condos in Ka'u) complex had the location and relaxed Hawaiian lifestyle that fit us best. If you are looking for a riotous night-life...you will not find it here. In fact, you might be on the wrong island for the party experience; even Kailua-Kona rolls up the streets fairly early most nights (Try Oahu & Wakiki for big city bustle and hustle). We're not located in a city and the nearby towns are just as quiet at night . The pace of life here is slow, quiet and for us, perfect...perfect for relaxation, exploration and the personal recharge you are looking for. Take time to sit and watch the sea breeze blow the palm trees in the tradewinds and be awed by the millions of stars in the blackness of Ka'u's night sky. Kailua-Kona is an hour and thirty minute drive; Hilo is an hour away - that's each way. So, we suggest stocking up on groceries when you arrive in either airport. None of the units at Sea Mountain have air conditioning - ours has three ceiling fans (two inside - living room and bedroom, one on the lanai) and generous ventilation with Hawaiian louvered windows to take advantage of the Hawaii's famous trade winds. We have found that often with the fan on at night, you may need a blanket for (URL HIDDEN) a blanket is provided, along with some extra pillows, should you want or need them. Private high-speed Wifi is available just for our unit. The condo has a cable TV package and we added a web enabled Blu-ray player for you to use your Netflix, Amazon or Hulu accounts - or any of the more than 200 entertainment apps on the device. We'll provide the WiFi password after you complete your reservation. The kitchen is equipped and efficient for a short or long stay. Relax and enjoy a movie or your favorite book and enjoy ocean view meals on the lanai. As a ground floor end unit, the location is private and has tropical plantings on the end garden. On the rare days when you would want to eat inside (we have only eaten inside a couple of times) there is a built in island with two stools. We spend a lot of time on the lanai and you'll want to as well, I bet. The separate bedroom has louvered bi-fold doors for privacy. The queen bed has a memory foam topper with under bed storage for luggage. There are two three drawer nightstand dressers and a large double closet. Plenty of storage for any length stay. The spacious, well lit bathroom has a marble and glass block walk in shower, a ton of counter space and large mirror. Hairdryer under the sink. Extra towel rods for your bath and beach towels to dry, hooks in the shower for wet swim suits...and hopefully just about everything you'll need while you are there. Rates quoted are total rates after all (13.42%) taxes are included as required by the State of Hawaii. The rate is complete, because of the way Airbnb calculates rates you are seeing the total nightly rate, not nightly rate PLUS tax. The taxes, accommodation and general excise, are visibly added to your nightly rate. If you would like a breakdown of the rate and taxes in line item form, please ask. Your only additional expense is a once per stay cleaning charge and Airbnb's service fees (something we do not control). Until we bought Tommy Bahamas beach chairs, we didn't know what we were missing - they are great, really! So, you'll find two beach chairs, beach mats, some snorkel gear and a cooler in the upstairs closet. I may have mentioned it elsewhere, but, in case I didn't we also have two beach towels for you to use (red and white striped). We provide starter paper products, trash bags, dish soap, hand soap and similar basic items for your stay. Hawaii TAT License #W(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) s our License Number from the state of Hawaii and we are required to include it in our listing.
