The SpaceLocated in bushland on the northeastern outskirts of Melbourne, this peaceful, self-contained, mud-brick studio comprises a large room with adjoining bathroom/ laundry - and simple cooking facilities (microwave oven, kettle, toaster, slow cooker, crockery, glassware, cutlery and a few essential food and beverage items). Outdoor bbq facilities available. French doors open to a private garden. Colourful market nearby every Saturday, local bushwalking trails, art galleries, artists' studios, cafes, wineries and many food outlets are only a ten-minute drive away. The studio is self contained and guests are welcome to enjoy all verandahs and the outdoors. I'm always happy to offer suggestions and tips about local highlights to suit your interests, perhaps even share a bush walk. Equally happy to meet you on arrival and leave you to enjoy the peace and solitude. Enjoy a peaceful location in the bush just 40 km northeast of Melbourne. The mud-brick studio is in a separate, private wing of the house, and located on a private property adjacent to the Dunmoochin Foundation, a renowned artists' bushland community established in the early 1950s, which now hosts artist-studio residencies. A visit to the colourful Saturday market at St Andrews and/or the Hurstbridge farmers market (first Sunday of the month) is highly recommended. The Nillumbik Open Studio Program, held over two weekends in November and one weekend in May, is a must for anyone with an interest in art or architecture. For wine buffs, the Open Cellars Event is held in October of each year. The nearest Yarra Valley winery, Wedgetail Estate, participates in this event and is in easy walking distance while several other boutique wineries are only a ten-to-fifteen-minute drive away. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby; I especially like Heart & Soul and The Little Organic Cafe, both in Hurstbridge, and A Boy Named Sue in St Andrews. Feel like a rest day? Why not picnic at the top of the ridge with 280 degree views? Alternatively, the Kinglake National Park is a good spot for a bush walk and a picnic! Cottles Bridge is a one-hour drive northeast of Melbourne CBD or an easy forty-minute drive from Tullamarine airport. For the bushwalker or cyclist: the nearest public transport is the train to Hurstbridge Station. A lift from Hurstbridge Station may be possible. *Minimum booking: two nights. *Extra person: $20. A comfortable (double) air mattress can be provided on request. *Off-street parking. *Safety policy during high-risk bushfire season (usually in January and February): either party may cancel the reservation at short notice (less than 24 hours) and guests will receive a full refund less AirBnB's service fee. (In addition, in the interests of safety, I'm happy to refund forfeited AirBnB service fee via a private bank transfer.) This safety policy will apply if the predicted bushfire risk is 'Severe', 'Extreme' or 'Code Red'. The studio is self contained and guests are welcome to enjoy all areas outdoors. The SpaceA spacious, light filled contemporary home in the beautiful Yarra Valley. My home has a wonderful ambience, is very comfortable and relaxing for all who come to stay. The birdsong, kangaroos and morning sun will bring a smile to your face after a long and peaceful nights sleep. There is room for an extra person if required and a fold out bed or single mattress can be provided for an extra $30 a night. There is a very cosy fire and many DVD's to enjoy in winter in the main lounge area upstairs at the end of the day. Winter or summer you will find many ways to relax and unwind. The double sized room has its own sitting area with comfy couches, large screen TV/DVD player, many cd's and books and also a beautiful private deck and gorgeous private bathroom. Queen size bed with sublime latex mattress, electric blankets, ceiling fans and reverse cycle/split system AC. This room is a favourite for women who come to stay as a retreat as it large, quiet, restful and cool in summer and cosy in winter....the safe space we all crave to escape to from time to time! Smiths Gully is a delightful alcove well off the main road yet central to many scenic drives and the local Community Market is held on Saturdays and you can enjoy many wonderful stalls and be entertained by the colourful parade of people watching for hours. Just 15 mins from Yarra Glen with its many wineries, boutique breweries and restaurants and 20 from Kinglake where the mountain magic will envelop you at any time of the year. Local organic pizza place "Boy named Sue" is a great place to drop in to and enjoy a funky laid back atmosphere and great coffee and locally sourced food. The St Andrews pub has live music and rustic ambience on weekends too. A well known and long respected venue for Blues musicians in particular. If you are an outdoor enthusiast the walks, running and mountain bike trails are fantastic here. I am an endurance athlete (Trail running/Adventure Racing) and can show or direct you to many trails. I am also a qualified gym instructor and completing a personal trainers qualification. If you wish to book a training session, this is also possible depending on my prior commitments. Your stay here with us can be as relaxing or as energetic as you wish! There are horses and three cats on the property. The house is not suitable for those with mobility issues and I apologise in advance. I also apologise that infants and children are not catered for here for safety reasons as there are animals, wildlife, high balconies stairs etc and it is generally marketing to a tranquil retreat for adults only. As mentioned previously, while you certainly don't need to be vegan or even vegetarian, I am an Ethical Vegan (animals are friends not ingredients ;-) and I would ask that you respect and commit to that for the duration of your stay by not bringing any animal produce like dairy, eggs, fish or meats or anything containing those things here and consider that before making your booking. Consider it a challenge, a health weekend or an perfect introduction to a more conscious way of consuming and living :) Many non vegan guests have asked about and enjoyed learning about the joys and health benefits of eating fresh, whole foods from the earth. A bonus really :) I am also delighted to create beautiful dishes for you by prior arrangement, at a very reasonable price and also, for those wishing to learn more about plant based nutrition or broaden their current repertoire of such dishes, I offer fun and informal cooking classes. A great way to learn is to DO! :-) The Beet Retreat is really something quiet unique in the B&B landscape and I'm proud of that. I hope you too will embrace what I strive to offer guests here, whether it's just a chance for guests to unwind and eat healthy food or something more profound... The choice is entirely yours. My Veganism is my way of life and I share it wholeheartedly with those who are curious but aside from my request for guests to refrain from bringing non-vegan produce here my focus is on making everyone happy and relaxed as any good host would. If you seek more by way of asking questions or reading my many books on Animal Rights and Plant Based foods maybe you can take something special away with you rather than just another relaxed weekend away in the country... Who knows :) Guest AccessYou are welcome to wander the 20 acres but remain outside of the paddocks that have horses in them unless I am with you. You can share the spacious lounge and main deck while respecting the privacy of the guests in that end of the house. The use of the kitchen is NOT available but I will personally provide exceptional quality meals at a reasonable cost. IF YOU SEEK A SELF CATERING OPTION PLEASE CHECK THE OTHER ROOM I HAVE ON OFFER THAT HAS A KITCHENETTE Interaction with GuestsIt will depend on my other commitments and your wishes/requirements. You may choose to be as private or social as you feel at the time :-) I also run retreats for individuals or couples here so for those who wish to learn more about plant based health and/or getting fit I can conduct some coaching/cooking sessions for you by prior arrangement. The NeighborhoodIts a very quiet community...very scenic with lovely walks. I know you'll love the serenity of this pocket of paradise. Its hard to believe you are just 45km from the CBD! Getting AroundI can be your "taxi" in your own car to and from any social engagements you may be in the area for such as weddings (a fee will most often apply) but other than that no other public transport. I can likewise pick you up from rail or airport. A car or bike (if you're fit enough!) will suit you best and a car is mandatory during the months of January and February. Other Things to NotePlease note this a vegan B&B and ensure that no consumable animal produce is brought into the property. Many thanks!!! This property is on tank water which is perfectly safe to drink ( I love it) but bring bottled if you'd prefer not. There is no Wi Fi in this area but it is available for free at the Smiths Gully Store. Telstra works outside but Optus works better all over the area. NOTE: During the declared extreme fire danger period especially during January/February either party may cancel the booking at short notice (under 24 hours) LESS both parties admin fees from Air BnB. I will return your booking fee via private transfer within 7 days as Air BnB doesn't cater for such events to my knowledge. For me its just a safety issue and the right thing to do. PLEASE NOTE: This cancellation/refund policy will apply ONLY to a declared Total Fire Ban day. As of late January 2016 there will be an accredited Fire Bunker for 6 people installed for use in emergencies.

The Space"The Beet Retreat" - A Vegan B&B! A spacious, light filled contemporary home in a rural and tranquil setting just 1 hour from Melbourne. My home has a wonderful ambience, is very comfortable and relaxing for all who come to stay. The birdsong, kangaroos and morning sun will bring a smile to your face after a long and peaceful nights sleep. I have another room listed at the opposite end of the house which is completely separate to your room. If you find this room is booked during the period you wish to stay, check on the availability of the other. This room is now self catering by way of the stylish new kitchenette with microwave, toaster and kettle. Breakfast hamper is supplied or for $10pp extra, the traditional in-house breakfast is still available, as are all the usual options of other meals, PT sessions, the very popular 3 hr vegan cooking classes etc if you are so inclined. If I am home during your stay you are most welcome to avail yourself of these other services and also the wood fire in the main lounge area with its larger TV. Winter or summer you will find many ways to relax and unwind both on the property and in the immediate surrounds or within a short drive. So many options! The Master Bedroom (Treetops) room has the aforementioned kitchenette, direct access to a large deck with wonderful views, a full en-suite including a double shower and huge corner tub plus a TV and DVD player. It has a comfortable Queen size bed, electric blanket, ceiling fan and reverse cycle/split system AC. Your stay here can be as relaxing or as energetic as you wish! There are 4 friendly horses and three cats (inside included) on the property for those who have allergies information!!! The house is not suitable for those with mobility issues and I apologise in advance. I also apologise that generally infants and children are not catered for here. This a tranquil retreat for adults only. PLEASE READ HOUSE RULES AND OTHER THINGS TO NOTE FIELDS BEFORE MAKING YOUR BOOKING. As mentioned previously, while you certainly don't need to be vegan or vegetarian, I am an Ethical Vegan (they are friends not ingredients) and I respectfully ask that you consider that when making your booking and honour it by NOT bringing ANY consumable animal produce on to the premises including when self catering. I am delighted to create beautifully fresh whole food, plant based dishes for you by prior arrangement, at a very reasonable price and also, for those wishing to learn more about plant based nutrition or broaden their current repertoire of such dishes, I offer fun and informal cooking classes. A great way to learn is to DO! :-) A stay here with meals can be a perfect introduction for you to learn about the joys and health benefits of eating fresh, whole foods from the earth. I guarantee you will head home relaxed, recharged and ready to roll again :-) Also pls note that I have just installed a government approved Wildfire Safety Bunker for my guests absolute safety over the summer months. No small financial undertaking I must say but I felt even after 21 years here, without direct incident, by inviting guests to come I must also have their safety in the forefront of my mind. I hope none of us ever have cause to use it though! Guest AccessThe whole outdoor property is yours to wander about on. Pat the horses over the fence and watch the wildlife! I enjoy spending time with my guests if that is your wish but won't intrude at all either. You are welcome to enjoy the fire in the lounge room and use the TV and DVD player in there too if I am home during your visit. Interaction with GuestsAs little or as much as you wish really. I think the beauty of an Air BnB stay is that we, as hosts, are opening up our home and extending our personal hospitality as though you are friends coming to stay. Its lovely to share a meal or a wine and chat at the end of the day or over breakfast but if you seek solitude or I am away for the duration of your stay or out on some crazy long training session that's all good too! My fur family will certainly keep you company :-D The NeighborhoodSmiths Gully is unique! Off the beaten track yet still so convenient to everything you need with just 15 minutes drive and the city is indeed commutable-under 1 hour! Its very pretty and quiet. I think you will love it....everyone who has stayed so far has. From walking to wineries...your options are plenty! The SpaceThe dwelling is surrounded by 16 acres of bush which makes your experience like being on a safari. The bush is brimming with wildlife including being home to a significant diversity of birds, gliders, butterflies, and wildflowers. If you are interested in native and indigenous flora and fauna than you will be pleasantly surprised. I am also an ecologist and only too happy to take you on walks. Equally, though, you can relax on our porches and be left alone to enjoy the sounds of nature. Furthermore due to being away from the city star gazing is amazing on a clear night. Additionally, we also try our best to live a sustainable lifestyle. As a result, we collect rainwater, grow our own veges and have multiple bikes for use. Guest AccessYou can access the bathroom, the bush, our garden, front and pack porches and the kitchen. Interaction with GuestsAfter work or on the weekend we can show you around nearby native reserves, swimming holes and townships close by. Additionally me and my partner like crafting, so if you would like to learn how to make a nest box, insect motel, necklace or other crafts just sing out. The NeighborhoodCottles Bridge is very close to native reserves, Yarra river swimming holes and the Yarra valley. Wineries are also within half an hour of our property. Getting AroundThe closest train station is a 20 minute bike ride away. (we have bikes you can borrow) and a 5 min drive.
