The SpaceAloha! The Makanella Room is a unique fabulous unit named after a very special boat we once had. It is cabin style living in an octagon redwood and cedar domed skylight masterpiece. I know you'll have a great adventure in this two bedroom one bathroom unit over looking the rushing river {during the rainy season otherwise it is a running creek] and the ocean. The magnificent views of the cruise ships coming and going about every other day, whales breaching oftentimes from January to March plus the sun rise from this property are pretty amazing. It is a great space for two lovely couples or a family of four. It has a full kitchen that has all you could possibly need for a wonderful vacation on the Big Island. The bathroom has a jacuzzi tub and a separate shower. The fully screened outdoor patio is large and lovely and has space for dining and relaxing. There's a swing and plenty of seating. We are centrally located on the Big Island, you can enjoy all the shopping, restaurants, attractions and art galleries of Hilo and enjoy our many beach parks. Surfing, paddle boarding, and body boarding are only three minutes away! You can also easily access Volcano National Park for hiking or go to Kona for a day trip. Our fantastic views in this unit may have you just wanting to stay home and relax in your home away from home! I am graciously waiting your arrival with an open heart. You will have a vacation with memories that last a life time. Mahalo, Delia Guest AccessI will be in a few weeks landscape the small ponds with cat fish and tilapia and plenty of small fish- these are pets. Once done i will let guests know should they want to spend quiet hours there. Interaction with GuestsI usually do not leave the property except for running errands in town when guests have checked in any of my listings and i have my cell phone available should they need to contact me. After 7pm i am usually home to rest so please call me in my land line [(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) before accessing my cell phone. You are welcome to ask me for suggestions as to places that may be interesting for you to visit, or let me know if there is anything that i can help you with. Other Things to NoteThere are 3 rental units in this property and I try to space my calendars so as not to schedule check ins all at the same day. I found it however important to request guests to make arrangement with me if their check in will be later than 9pm. My driveway is shared with my neighbor who can get alarmed with late activities in the driveway.

The SpaceOno House is perched above Onomea Bay on the beautiful Hamakua coast Scenic Drive, six miles north of Hilo. New to the rental market, Ono House is a secluded hideaway with ocean, garden and rainforest views. Flowering Royal Poinciana trees, monkey pod trees, palms, coffee and tropical flowers festoon two acres, while another acre is anopen lawn for games or sunbathing with a mai tai. The secluded location and surrounding acreage grant a high degree of privacy and the electric-gated entry assures security. A caretaking couple lives in a cottage on the property and can be helpful or invisible, as you wish. The most repeated description by visitors is 'serene'. Within walking distance is the old donkey trail to ocean’s edge at wildly scenic Onomea Bay. The famed Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden (URL HIDDEN) is a short walk, and two cafes and an organic tea farm (URL HIDDEN) are less than 2 miles away. Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, Umauma Botanical Gardens, ziplines and Historic downtown Hilo with its fish and farmer’s markets are all within a 20-minute drive. Kohala Coast beaches are 60 miles away. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (URL HIDDEN) is an hour to the south and Waipio Valley an hour to the north. Current lava eruptions are easily visible flowing into the ocean, a status which can change. The three-level house has 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths and additional rooms for extra sleeping space. The top level master suite views ocean and rain forest. A large bath and an office, suitable for a child’s room, connect to the master bedroom. The easy-access main floor has a kitchen, dining area, living room, laundry, half bath and a charming garden room. The garden room has a Balinese punee bed and can be used as another bedroom, or for relaxing. The lower level opens onto the lower terrace. This level has a full bath, two bedrooms and a large family room with a queen-size sleeper sofa. One bedroom has a queen-sized bed; the second bedroom has a full bed and a twin bed. The house is well-stocked with kitchen equipment, washer and dryer, internet, flat screen TVs, DVDs, grill and books, including local guidebooks. An ocean-view hot tub is scheduled for May, 2013, if it doesn’t get delayed by “island time.” Island time is contagious; you may find yourselves relaxing at the estate instead of sightseeing. Ono House, “Ono” means “good” in Hawaiian, can comfortably sleep 8+. For more than 8 people remember there are only two full baths, which may be a problem if you bring teens. “Pack & Play” cribs with bedding are available. The SpaceOne of the best things about our place is that we are at 1,300 foot elevation--temperate--rarely ever hot or cold. This Kalakaua Suite is a tribute to King Kalakaua--the first monarch to travel around the world, noted for returning hula to Hawaii, bringing a variety of immigrants to Hawaii and being on the cutting edge of modern innovations. If you would like to have antiques, Hawaiian history, and a room with a great ocean view--this is your place. This suite is very spacious with approximately 480 square feet including a big bathroom with shower separate toilet room and double pedestal sinks. The bedroom features a comfortable sitting area, an antique secretary desk a Chippendale-like small dining table, and a mini-bar with wine glasses, table settings, and wine available (for an additional fee). We have a mini-kitchen area in the large closet which includes a small refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, hot plate, electric kettle and coffee maker. This little kitchen is stocked with basic spices, condiments, and cookware. This particular room can accommodate a maximum of two people only in one mahagony Empire-style Queen Bed. (If you need accommodation for additional guests in your party--we have another suite that you may want to consider. It can accommodate up to four people. Call Christine directly for more information.) We are off grid with a very quiet, state-of-the-art generator. Soon we will be acquiring deep cell batteries and solar panels, as well. We mostly keep the power off from around 11pm to 6am. Adjustments to that schedule can be made on request. We have filtered catchment water for cooking and bathing and we supply bottled water for drinking. You'll feel really back to nature here on our vast, untamed 13 acres. Our closest neighbor is half a mile away and it can be very quiet here with a spectacular night sky showing off the Milky Way. Yet we are on paved road with an easy twelve to fifteen minute drive into downtown Hilo. Your Kalakaua Suite has it's own entrance on the backside of this big house and it feels very private. Your Kalakaua Suite has both satellite internet and satellite Dish TV with many channels to select from. Please note, on arrival we are required to collect Hawaii Hotel and GE Tax for an addtional charge at the rate of .1341--on top of the total charge for your stay with the $50 USD cleaning fee. Upon confirmation, we will send you directions to our place, with this tax calculation--so that you may come prepared to have it in hand when you arrive. Mahalo, in advance, for understanding. We have one cat and two very friendly medium size shepherd/lab dogs. All of our pets stay outside and love to see new people here, just as much as we do! Guest AccessYou'll have this large suite to yourself. The main house and the laundry is not available; however you will have drying racks for wet clothes. Satellite internet and cable TV come with the unit. Interaction with GuestsThis Kalakaua Suite enjoys it's own private entrance, so you can be pretty independent and private--as you like. But we live onsite (mostly upstairs) and we are easily accessible if you need something or you just want to chat. John and I have travelled all over the world. We own a plumbing business and this vacation rental business "Hamakua HiloHilo Guesthouse." We love to chat with our guests and give adventure and restaurant advice. We live onsite, upstairs--so we are available 24/7 as desired. The NeighborhoodWe are the last house on a long country road, 2 1/2 miles above the highway. On this road live struggling Hawaiians, millionaires from the mainland, elderly Japanese couples who grew up working the cane fields here, cows, horses, chickens, goats, vast rolling vistas and a twisty gulch. We are blessed with one of the best views on the island, overlooking farmland, the ocean and Hilo town. Getting AroundYou really need a car to stay at our place. But the public bus is just $2 that goes on the Belt Highway all around the island! Other Things to Note**Don't worry about additional taxes --when you stay with us. We cover them in your room rate! If you have a rental car, we think you will find that we are one of the best deals in East Hawaii!

The SpaceBudget accommodation in a cute, older 3 bedroom house just outside of Hilo. The house does show its age a bit, so we priced it between a Hostel and a regular Hotel. I am gradually renovating it to get rid of the bits and pieces that look worn. She will shine one day, but right now she is just a nice little granny who is welcoming and frugal. The house is not luxurious, but has all the basics and we are working constantly to make it better. It is ideally located for people visiting the Hamakua Coast (Akaka Falls, the Botanical Garden and even Waipio Valley further afield. The house is also very close to Hilo (7 miles- just 4 miles to edge of downtown) and very easy to find on the main road. It is a nice, comfortable and simple setting for those who want to visit the island, have an easy jump off point to all it has to offer, but do not want to spend a lot of money with lodging and don't need luxury. The room is complete with queen bed, dresser and closet. Guest AccessGuests have access to a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with towels, laundry room and all other facilities in the house. We have reliable wi-fi and movies on demand on the TV (though most people are too much into enjoying the island to want to watch TV). We do not have cable (on purpose). Interaction with GuestsI typically rent the whole house. However, this room is available it means that I am in one of the other rooms because I am staying in the area. The NeighborhoodPapaikou is just far enough from Hilo to give you a feeling that you are not in the bustle of the city, but only 7 miles away from it. It is a residential neighborhood with farms interspersed here and there. For the plant lovers out there, the house is really close to the Botanical Garden. Getting AroundWe recommend renting a car. Technically, it is possible to get to the house on the Hale On bus, but service is infrequent. Other Things to NoteThe house is very conveniently located on the Hawaii Belt Highway. It makes getting places very easy but the convenience does come with the added noise of traffic (cars going by, not car horns) and it can be heard in the bedrooms. With that being said, you can also hear the stream flowing below the window, the wind rustling through the banana trees, the neighbor's goats frolicking in their expansive yard to the south of us and yes, the coqui frogs singing their symphony every evening. Green geckos hang around and eat mosquitoes, so we have an understanding that they can stay as long as they keep up with that job.

The SpaceBudget accommodation in a cute, older 3 bedroom house just outside of Hilo. This listing used to be for just one room, but looking back but that model did not work well because I could not offer the value that my other listings do, it is now re-vamped (as of September 2015). The house does show its age a bit, so we priced it between a Hostel and a regular Hotel. What you get now is a full house instead of just a room. I did this because it allows us to come and clean the whole place in between stays. While this little old lady of a house will always show its age, we now have more time to give her wrinkles a good scrub after someone leaves. I am gradually renovating it to get rid of the bits and pieces that look worn. She will shine one day, but right now she is just a nice little granny who is welcoming and frugal. This is a great accommodation for a family or group of friends who are travelling on a budget and do not want to stay in a hostel or pay hotel prices to have private rooms. It is not luxurious, but has all the basics and we are working constantly to make it better. It is ideally located for people visiting the Hamakua Coast (Akaka Falls, the Botanical Garden and even Waipio Valley further afield. We have reliable wi-fi and movies on demand on the TV (though most people are too much into enjoying the island to want to watch TV). We do not have cable (on purpose). Interaction with GuestsThere is a lockbox for check in, and Brandy, manager and caretaker extraordinaire is only a phone call away. I (Alex) sometimes access or stay in the basement overnight (I am making it into a little apartment for myself), but I stay out of the way unless people want to have a chat (or a beer). The NeighborhoodPapaikou is just far enough from Hilo to give you a feeling that you are not in the bustle of the city, but only 7 miles away from it. Richard Tillinghast Our house on Puumoi Hill above the Hamakua Coast on Hawaii's Big Island We live in a serene and secluded spot a few miles north of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii, at the end of a rough gravel road into the hills, with beautiful views of the ocean to the east and the mountains to the west. There is nothing fancy about the place; it is certainly not your typical impersonal vacation rental. This is our home. We are a working writer and a working painter, and the place is filled with art, books, carvings, surfboards, musical instruments and Polynesian artifacts that Suzy has collected on her travels in Asia and the South Pacific. Though the house, 'ohana, and other outbuildings are only eight years old, we built them in traditional style, with broad porches, wide eaves and many windows. We wanted the house to be part of its surroundings rather than to impose itself on them. The main house has two stories, with the top floor given over to a large master bedroom, bathroom adjacent, porches front and back, one open, one screened. The bedroom has an ocean view. There is also a tub on the screen porch, and it is kind of neat to take a bath out there more or less in the open air. The large room downstairs, , with a half-bath adjacent, also with porches front and back, has a sitting area, music area, and a simple kitchen. There is also a daybed where an extra person can sleep in a pinch. Outside is the carport. We cook over a propane-powered two-burner in the kitchen area, and we often barbecue on the outdoor gas grill. Our dining table is on the back screened-in porch. There is no oven, though we occasionally bake things in a Dutch oven over the outdoor grill, also propane-powered, like the hot water for the house. We are 100 % off the grid. Electricity comes totally from solar, and there is a Honda generator in case more power is needed, which it seldom is. We have a large cachment tank for our water, though we buy drinking water in Hilo in large refillable jugs.   Suzy has had a studio built for herself on the same level as the master bedroom. It has a daybed for napping or extra accommodation, its own front porch with great views, a half-bath, and separate stairs. We have a small fenced-in flower garden in front of the house, and there are several avocado trees around the property, a grapefruit tree, a lemon tree, gardenias, and some banana trees that yield fruit. We have planted other flowering trees and palms near the house. Next to the main house is an 'ohana, or little house, where I have my study. The 'ohana contains a double bed, bathroom and shower, and a large screened-in porch on the lower level, where I do most of my writing and other work. The 'ohana is a self-contained unit which we use as a guest house when we have visitors. Slightly farther from the house is a little meditation hut with a single bed, tub and basin on the deck, no toilet. It can also be used as a guest house. Our land slopes down to a stream, and there is a treehouse halfway down. We charge so little, $1200 a month, because we mainly just want to have someone reliable here while we are away on the mainland. We prefer, whenever possible, to rent to someone we know or know of. Vacation rentals, much, much smaller, charge easily the same or more for a single week. If you would like to use our old but serviceable Toyota pickup truck while you are here, we ask $300 a month for that. It's much cheaper than renting a car. Someone comes in to mow and weed-whack once a month, and you would be expected to pay for that, as well as for wireless and TV if you want to have those services. We would expect you to feed our chickens and lovebirds. The chickens provide fresh eggs daily. What we love about the place is its quietness and remoteness. Hawaiian hawks, or 'Io, an endangered species, nest in our woods and glide over our property. The 'Io is the guardian spirit of the place. There are also saffron finches, nutmeg mannikins, Japanese white-eyes, doves and cardinals, as well as many butterflies that visit our garden. We like to have cocktails or lunch out on the deck in front of Suzy's studio. Due to the lack of ambient light, the stars are brilliant in the night sky, and the moon on the ocean is a romantic and unforgettable sight. Eight miles north of Hilo overlooking the Hamakua Coast

The SpaceNicely furnished large (nearly 800 SF) one bedroom unit with both king and queen beds, so can very comfortably sleep up to 4, on a beautiful river gorge with nearby waterfall and swimming pond. You'll have a full bathroom with tub/shower, kitchenette (no full-size range), private patio, shared sauna, cable TV, DVR and Wi-Fi. Lush quiet surroundings, yet only 5 minutes to downtown Hilo. Windows look out at beautiful large, landscaped yard - like having your own private tropical rain forest. Parking available for one car only. * Nightly, Weekly Rates & Extra Guest fee include Hawaii Taxes For directions and more information, please visit our (EMAIL HIDDEN) or use (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Maps for directions. GPS may not be reliable on the island. Guest AccessThe whole apartment, the laundry area in the garage (dryer is coin-op, washer is not) as well as access to bikes and snorkel gear and boogie boards in the garage, the rear patio with table and chairs and the huge back yard (and even the stairs leading down to the adjacent river gorge with waterfalls and area where one could swim). The river gorge is not on our property, swim at your own risk, of course. There is also a shared dry sauna available upstairs upon request. Electric costs in Hawaii are outrageous, so we may have to charge a small fee of $5 if you'd like to use the sauna. Interaction with GuestsI am only rarely on-site, unfortunately, as we live primarily in San Francisco currently, and our manager Todd, after five years living there, now has his own house elsewhere, but comes frequently to maintain the property, clean between guests, etc. The NeighborhoodVery quiet, peaceful neighborhood of full-time, well-established homes, mostly long-time residents are ethnic Japanese families. Only a mile or so to Scenic Drive where the island's best botanical gardens are located. Walk or bike to "Pinkie's Beach" or even to famous Honoli'i surf beach. Easy access to downtown Hilo only 5 minute, beautiful drive down the coastal highway. Getting AroundNo real decent public transit anywhere on the island, so a car is really required to see the many, varied sights of the Big Island. Biking, walking or hitchhiking may be possible for longer stays when not touring the island, I suppose. Harper's Car Rental is a local company that rents cars of various types and ages for much less than the national companies at the airport, especially good for those staying longer periods. Other Things to NoteThe property actually consists of two lovely homes, connected by a covered lanai. A wonderful, older couple live in the original home and the newer, three level home is primarily for occasional vacation rental so that we can come visit when able to do so. Please never park off the concrete. The gravel/paved roads out front are actually an easement for our neighbors up the hill and can never be blocked. Like most of the Big Island, there are tiny, vociferous Coqui frogs that you will hear at night. It's the tropics, relax and enjoy their song! ;-)

The SpaceFifty-plus years ago, this building was part of the Buddhist church that once stood across the street. The altar still stands on the lānai. In its new life as a one bedroom cottage, the shrine is perfect for the single professional, couple, or small family. It is quaint, rustic, clean, and cozy, but NOT luxurious. Roosters are loud in the morning. Coquis (frogs) are loud at night, and when conditions are right (often) you can hear the waves smashing and peeling along the sea cliffs makai. As an OLD building, the floors creak and slant here and there (a marble would roll if placed just about anywhere), and every now and then an unwanted critter manages to get in. We designed the layout with older, possibly wheelchair bound elders in mind, so all rooms are open to each other. That openness can be disconcerting for those who need a lot of privacy within their home, and even tho there is a double/bed, and large couch, the layout makes it uncomfortable for extra guests. The shrine is furnished in a mixture of old and new plantation-style furniture (grandpa-made table, old rattan chairs, and retro dressers). There is a fully furnished kitchen for you to use, sheets, towels, and bedding. The water heater is small, so short showers are recommended, and there are currently no guest laundry facilities on the property, but there's a wonderful 24 hour laundry mat close by that has a great drop off service. Finally, I apologize; I do NOT have cable TV service--that has never been a part of my lifestyle and I really donʻt want to change that now. As I accommodate you in my home, please accommodate me in that small eccentricity. Donʻt be surprised by no TV. Thank you! The cottage comes with one covered parking space, but parking is severely restricted in our driveway, so if you have any guests over during your stay, they will need to park across or down the street. My son and I live in the big house across the yard, and we value peace, health, organic gardening practices, and respectful, kind interaction. I raise chickens for meat and eggs, and have had gardens and jungle all around. You are welcome to share in all of the fruit and produce of our ʻāina . . . which is plentiful! Deep soil, abundant rain, plenty sun, no commercial sugar cane ever grown on this land---so everything grows! Guest AccessGuests are welcome to meander the yard, pick any fruit or flowers, enjoy the chickens, and cross the yard to visit in the "big" house if weʻre around. Make yourself at home please. Interaction with GuestsI live in the bright green house across the yard. I will do everything in my power to make your visit comfortable and filled with aloha. Please donʻt hesitate to ask if you have any needs or questions. I love sharing my home and lifestyle with guests. The NeighborhoodOur home is on the Onomea Scenic Route, a 4 mile stretch of meandering waterfall jungle heaven. Homes are a mixture of century old plantation structures, new gated mansions, and everything in between. I love to walk to the Botanical Garden which was required by the state "access laws" to keep the ancient trails public and open to the beach. Itʻs a great place to pick smooth glass. Ask me why when you get here! There is also a drop-dead amazing sunrise spot a stoneʻs throw away. And donʻt forget the awesome swimming holes--I can think of three--within walking distance. Waterfalls included! Again. . . just ask and Iʻll give you directions. We are close enough to Hilo to make "go-comes" no trouble (if youʻve forgotten a critical recipe ingredient), but far enough away from the fray to feel as tho youʻve really landed in the country. I love my little town/coast/island! Getting AroundWe are 1/2 mile from the nearest bus stop. I recommend renting a vehicle. Other Things to NoteAgain. . . I want you to be completely forewarned: THERE IS NO TV OR CABLE TV SERVICE HERE! Also. . . . I've been looking for a place to put up info about local taxes, and this seems to be the only place possible. Sorry for the inconvenience, but following the advice of my accountant, I just raised the rate in order to include the state GET and TAT taxes which are a steep 13.416%. W (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
