No cars, no noise, just the rustle of a breeze through the pine trees, the song of a chickadee and the occasional call of a loon. You work hard. You deserve a break! This is Jennie Cottage, overlooking lovely Plunkett Pond in Northern Maine, the most forested state in the country. Located just one hour north of Bangor, the cottage is an easy 10 minute drive from I-95. It is close to Baxter State Park and beautiful Mt. Katahdin (the start or end point of the Appalachian Trail). Canada is about 1 hour away and Acadia National Park is a 2.5 hour trip. With virtually no traffic, on a dirt road, the property is very child friendly (although supervision is a must near the lake, of course). Well-behaved dogs are welcome, too!
Inside, you’ll find a knotty pine interior which features a cozy living room with a large TV with satellite service and a DVD player (bring your own DVD’s). There is a spacious dining area, kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The kitchen has everything you might need, including a refrigerator/freezer, electric range, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and even a bread machine! The water is well water and we do have hot water! A limited number of towels are available but you might want to bring some of your own, especially beach towels.
The cottage sleeps six--one bedroom has a full-sized bed with an ultra-comfy memory foam mattress and the other bedroom has two twin beds, both with memory foam mattresses. There are also two twin Aerobeds that can be put on the floor for a sixth person. The beds are dressed with high-quality fleece or flannel sheets and fluffy, goose down comforters are available for each. There is also an adorable bunkhouse on the property with two twin beds. The bunkhouse presently has no electricity or heat but in the summertime, kids with flashlights are welcome to rough it on their own, if they dare!
There is no landline phone and cell service depends on your carrier (Tracfones seem to work the best). There is high-speed satellite Internet.
Outside, you’ll experience the wild beauty of Plunkett Pond, which is a mere 50 feet from the back door. You can practically roll out of bed and into the lake! There is a 2-person, sturdy, inflatable boat and a single-seat kayak, so you can cruise the 435 acres of sparkling clean water, observing a wide variety of wildlife, including red squirrels, chipmunks, woodpeckers, muskrats, raccoons, beaver, moose, deer, eagles and of course, Maine’s famous loons. If you prefer to relax, you can lounge by the water’s edge in your lakeside hammock. In the evening, you can build a crackling fire in the outdoor fireplace while listening to the loons and crickets. Roast some weenies or make s’mores! There is also a charcoal grill available, so you can cook your freshly caught fish on the grill!
(Please keep in mind that some weeks shown as unavailable on the calendar may still be available, so please ask if you have a specific week or weeks in mind).
We would love for you to be our guests at Jennie Cottage. We like to think that our lakeside retreat captures the essence of the Maine state slogan, “Maine: Life as it should be.” Your memories of your time here will last a lifetime.
About 30 minutes away, there is a very well-stocked general store, two gas stations and a post office. In Smyrna, there is a quaint, Amish general store that sells everything from butter and cheeses to drill bits and work boots! It is one of only three Amish settlements in New England. About 30 minutes away is the town of Lincoln, where you'll find a Wal-Mart, Tim Horton's, supermarkets, restaurants, etc. There is an 18-hole golf course in nearby Island Falls and if you want to climb a mountain, Baxter State Park is close by--one entrance is in Patten and the other, in Millinocket. It has lovely picnic areas, plenty of hiking trails (some easy, some not so easy) and be sure to drive the Golden Road, which has an abundance of moose!
