Interaction with GuestsWe have been providing guests with memorable summer lakeshore vacations for 12 years at the Truman Lake House. We welcome e- mail and phone questions and have made friends with many of our families that return year after year; in fact, our very first guest family is returning again this summer for their 12th visit in a row! We provide a guest journal on site for guests to record the fun places they visited and their favorite lake activities. We have personal check- in and orientation services available from our hostess. The NeighborhoodWe are located on a private beach in an enclave of 16 homes, about a mile in from the County Highway so the traffic noise is much less than at lake homes right next to the highway (and safer). The local area is rich in art, activities and wonderful places to eat. The Cornfield Cafe in nearby Dunvilla has the BEST hash browns, soup and broasted chicken. Zorbaz is a Minnesota icon known for its pizza and good times atmosphere since 1969-- folks meet year after year there to party and renew summer friendships. Nearby Vergas has lots of cute gift shops, great burgers at Billy's bar and the homemade pie down the block at the local cafe is cheap but excellent. There's the Forest Edge Gallery near Vergas, literally on the Forest's edge, showcasing talented artists in a delightful country setting. The Central Market in downtown Detroit Lakes is a wonderful grocery store and had good coffee bar and hot, prepared meals to take home to the lake. Getting AroundYou will want a vehicle to get to the Truman Lake House but after that, there's plenty of hiking and biking trails, not to mention you can take your boat to Zorbaz and tie up on their dock for lunch and dinner. Guests bring their own motor boats or pontoons (or rent them locally) to tie up at our dock, weather permitting. (During high winds or severe storms boats may need to be removed from the lake to save the docks and boats.) Launch sites are on east and west ends of big Pelican Lake. We provide two kayaks for our guests use which are stored in lakeside boathouse for easy launch access.
