The SpaceOur home has been described as "airy", "magical + modern" and having a "cabin-like feel" :)
As you enter and pass through the warming room, a fireplace is there to greet you when you walk in the door. Put on a record or pull out a book and read on the couch. Or take a nap, it is a very magical couch for napping.
A spacious kitchen provides plenty of room for cooking, and the downstairs bedroom has plenty of privacy. The entire house is full of skylights, so you'll get plenty of light in all seasons.
Upstairs is an incredibly spacious, lofted "studio" full of windows. A desk looks out over the Mill should you choose to get some work done, or head up the stairs to the loft bedroom.
There's a full (but compact) bathroom on this floor, and out the back there's a deck that looks over a beautiful, shaded yard with a bench swing for you and a tire swing for the kids (or you).
The downstairs bathroom is plenty roomy, and the water pressure here is amazing. There is a washer and dryer, along with a driveway for one car.
One of the beds listed is in the very private and breezy tiny guest barn in the back yard. It's a private little escape that overlooks the lake, if anyone in your party wants to glamp it. It has power, a fan, and a space heater in the colder months. There is a full bed in the loft, but be aware that the ceiling is low. Also, there is no bathroom, so guests in the shed will need to return to the main house for that.
In season, feel free to pick anything that's ripe from the garden. If you decide to go to the lake, take the fishing pole and see if you can catch one of the reservoir's many fish. Or let us know ahead of time and you can take the two-person kayak for a paddle. Guest AccessLaundry, food, all utensils, garden, closets, washer and dryer, kayak, fishing pole, iron, plenty of blankets and pillows and towels and fresh linens - soap and shampoo in the bathroom, nearly everything the home has to offer (save for the tools, bikes, and camping gear, which we're a bit particular about :).
There is parking for two cars. Extra parking is available on Main Street, 2 blocks away. Interaction with GuestsThe house is all yours, as we only rent it when we're away traveling. We'll be available online and by phone, and for check in we leave the keys to the house in a secure location with clear instructions so you can check-in late or early as needed. The NeighborhoodThe property sits across from an old, historic mill, with its back to a lake and the sounds of a waterfall right next door. It's just down the block from Main Street's restaurants (check out Local 111) and farmer's market, so groceries and food are easy to come by without the need to hop in the car.
Just five minutes away and a ten minute hike in, is High Falls Park - it's an easy hike to a gorgeous waterfall - you can swim there in the summer but any time's a good time to go.
Should you choose to do so, it's twenty minutes to Hudson or Chatham, and forty to Great Barrington, Millerton, Rhinebeck, or Albany.
We know both our neighbors, as well as many folks in this small community, and are certain you'll find them friendly and respectful.
If there's a fair bit of snow, it's really magical to go visit OMI - you can cross-country ski or take the sleds and go sledding in their sculpture gardens.
If you prefer downhill skiing, Catamount is the closest - 25 minutes away.
Olana can be a great place to take in a view of the Catskills and the Hudson River (the house is also really beautiful).
The waterfalls around here are pretty magical - High Falls is just at the base of the hill, worth the short hike, and should be pretty raging right about now. Or take a ride to Bash Bish.
There are a ton of historic movie theaters in the area if you feel like staying indoors (try the Catskill and Chatham ones for both popular and independent movies).
For breakfast spots, we recommend Crossroads in Hillsdale or Ben Gables in Chatham. Delicious, comfy, feels like home! Or go just down the road to Hawthorne Valley, the Waldorf School / Biodynamic Farm / Grocery Store and grab a fresh Cinnamon Bun and some coffee in the morning. They're addictive.
For local restaurants, Local111 is a favorite, though our preference is Philmont Pub, and the Vanderbilt House is pretty cozy as well.
Hudson (17 min away) has tons of restaurants too. Art and shows: Try Basilica in Hudson. Getting AroundEasy 5 min walk down two blocks into Main street, and right near the Taconic for travel up or down state. Hudson is 15 minutes away (if you drive or take the $15 cab ride) should you choose to take Amtrak to or from the city, and the nearest Metro North is 40 minutes (Wassaic). Other Things to NoteThis is our home, we rent it out only when we are traveling. As such, it differs from some AirBnB listings which are only used as guest houses. All of our things are in the house, so expect to find clothes in the closets, food in the refrigerator, etc.
We hire a cleaner to prep the house before guest arrivals, which covers 2 hours of cleaning (hence cleaning fee). However because it's our home (vs a hotel), if you prefer white-glove-test level of cleaning this may not be the right spot for you. If however you love getting to stay in a lovely, tidy, normal-clean cozy home, this will be perfect :)
Also may be helpful to know, we don't have: Toaster, television, microwave.
Please note that one of the beds listed is a sofa bed, two are firm futon-type mattresses, and one is a regular new mattress All are lovely for sleeping :)
