The Ma’ukele Lodge consists of three unique bedrooms with private baths and King and Queen sized beds, in a late 1960’s Hawaiian and Bohemian styled beach house. Kaimu literally means gathering (at the) sea (to watch surfing) or silent sea. It was a small town in the Puna district that is still designated as the most famous and photographed black sand beach in Hawaii. The beach, several great surf sites, and park were completely destroyed by an eruptive flow of the Kupaianaha vent of the Kilauea Volcano in 1990. It is fascinating to view the Lava flowing into the sea from the black sand beach that fronts the Lodge, when it is activel above ground. Through storms, Lava flows and high waves, the beach has changed its form, making one realize the dynamics and power of Nature that affects this still pristine coastline..Route 137, off of which Ma'ukele Lodge is located, has the unique feature of many hot springs and crystal clear snorkling spots with a large variety of fish, turtles, dolphins, and coral reefs. E komo mai..The lava viewing is spectacular from my beach!

The neighborhood is right in the middle of my favorite activities and there's a farmers market nearby almost everyday of the week. Getting AroundThe best way to get around is by car. Lots of people will say that you need a four wheel drive but it's not necessary. I do recommend renting a car with a sun roof or that's a convertible because the drives and views are spectacular. Other Things to NoteIf you want to pick any fruit from the yard I'd be happy to provide you with the instructions. You are in the midst of a rainforest with birds and frogs and beautiful flowers. The hosts were very helpful - great tips for Volcano and Puna. Awesome snorkeling in tide pools about 30 mins away. Recommended for:Sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers. A GREAT PLACE! Guest: Paul (Detroit) Date of Stay: 04/07/12 Review Submitted: 04/15/12 My wife and I had a great stay! The description of the home is very accurate - tons of space, private setting, artistically constructed and decorated. We really had everything we needed. The location is perfect home base for sightseeing on this side. David is very friendly and had a lot of good tips for us as newcomers to the Big Island. Highly Recommended! Recommended for:Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, adventure seekers. A RELAXING STAY Guest: Steverino (Honolulu) Date of Stay: 03/17/12 Review Submitted: 04/15/12 My girlfriend and I stayed for a week at this rental. We had a marvelous time. We were far away from the usual day-to-day life in Honolulu and enjoyably so. Our hosts were always there when we needed them but were very circumspect about leaving us our privacy. One of the highlights, though, of the trip was a trip to a series of lava tubes there on the property, led by the owner and his two young sons. Yes, it's a rainy location, but one needs the rain at times for cuddling, watching movies, sleeping deeply, and growing the great green rainforest all around. Highly recommended for those of you, like us, want to escape into a different world for a while. Recommended for:Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway. QUIET, BEAUTIFUL & LUSH Guest: Cindy (Keaau, HI) Date of Stay: 09/01/11 Review Submitted: 02/12/12 I am so blessed that my family and I had the opportunity to stay here. It was exactly what we needed. My favorite room was the master bedroom, waking up to pink hibiscus seen through the huge picture window, and the gentle cooling breeze. The location was perfect for getting around Puna too. It was right in the middle, so we could go up to Volcano National Park, and zip down to Pohoiki, the Hot Pond, Kehena Beach, the cliffs in HPP, and then go into Hilo for whatever we needed. Thank you Dave and Sharon for your hospitality, for showing us around, and for helping us adjust to life in Hawaii! Recommended for:Adventure seekers. KURTISTOWN RENTAL Guest: Old J. C. (San Diego, CA ) Date of Stay: 11/04/11 Review Submitted: 01/23/12 I had the pleasure of staying at this rental for ten days this last November. The unit has a great location almost between Hilo and Volcano in addition to being very near the quaint village of Pahoa. It is also in close proximity to the following magnificent parks: Lava Tree, Isaac Hale and MacKenzie. For the really adventurous, the property actually has on premises access to a vast network of underground lava tubes that seem to go on forever. If you are looking for a cozy, comfortable place in a beautiful rustic and tranquil Hawaiian setting, this is the place for you. I plan to stay there whenever I am on the Hilo Side of the Big Island. You can go snorkeling nearby and to The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We enjoy visiting our Hawaii island home and sharing it with others. It inspires us to create art and hope it does the same for you. The landscape of the garden is developing as we work to call attention to the natural environment around our recently built home. We are located on a dead end street so only people who live there drive by. The neighboring homes are owned and occupied by full time residents. It's a great house. This is a clean and affordable place to stay. We are conveniently located in the tropical district of Puna, on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are a logical gateway from which you can explore the strikingly beautiful, utterly raw, and uncrowded natural surroundings of East Hawaii. We are a 20 minute drive from the Hilo International Airport, a 5 minute drive from the town of Pahoa, a 20 minute drive to the sunny Kapoho beach parks, and an easy 40 minute drive from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Come relax, unwind, and fill your days with fascinating activities. "Paradise Getaway" is located on a 1/4 acre lot, in Anialoa subdivision. Our house is surrounded by undeveloped lots on 3 sides, increasing your feeling of privacy. Our yard is tropical and ever developing. My husband David designed and built this house himself. Upon entering you will feel at home, with our comfortable and open floor plan. It has vaulted open beam ceilings, and plenty of large windows, allowing for tropical breezes to flow thru. Every room also has ceiling fans, it is easy to adjust the temperature based on air flow. We have a fully equipped kitchen with many cooking and dining conveniences, so relax and cook at home, or grill out on our charcoal grill. Our sleeping area has a new and comfortable queen sized bed. There is a large closet with room for luggage, and drawers to unpack for your stay. We also have a fold out futon where 2 additional people can sleep. Our bathroom is clean, spacious, and has a full sized bathtub / shower which is heated by solar hot water. Most houses in the Puna district rely on rain catchment systems for their water needs. We invested in a 10,000 gallon concrete rain catchment tank, complete with a state of the art UV filter. This ensures ample water supply, and a delicious and safe water source for all your drinking, cooking, and bathing needs. When comparing vacation rentals in this area, keep these quality eco-friendly features in mind. To help you get out and enjoy we provide the following: beach towels, sand mats, basic snorkel gear, boogies board, small ice chest / cooler, kids sand toys, and flash lights for your night time lava viewing. Don't forget, we have on-site laundry! A FRIENDLY NOTE: Our house is on a quiet street, and we request no loud parties. We have a strict NO SMOKING / NO PET POLICY for the comfort of all future guests. THANKS People are always courious what the weather may be like; it is dynamic! A "typical day" might be sunny and warm with some fast moving clouds and a short rain squal. It frequently rains at night and in the early morning, keeping it cool and comfortable for sleeping. The combination of sun, warmth, and rain, is what makes it look so tropical, and beautiful! It is helpful to pack a long sleeve shirt / pants, closed toe walking shoes for the lava, and a light rain coat. The following are all within an easy days drive: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Hwy 130/Kalapana -previous lava flows, snorkeling at tide pools, soaking at warm ponds, surfing /swimming, farmers markets,Lava Trees, tropical gardens, zoo, downtown Pahoa and Hilo (restaurants/museums/shopping) We are conveniently located in the tropical district of Puna, on the Big Island of Hawaii. Guest AccessThis "Little House" is centrally located between Hilo, Volcano National Park, and Pahoa (20 min each way). Just turn into Hawaiian Acres one mile north of Kirtistown onto Kuauli Rd.. We are 5 miles from the Volcano Hwy 11 on a paved Road 8. Interaction with GuestsBruce & Fern live 15 minutes away and are available. Mostly they leave their quests to there privacy. The NeighborhoodThe Puna district is spectacular, with ragged sea cliffs, black sand beaches, overgrown rainforests, flowing lava, and quaint little towns. Wander the Maku'u Market near the little village of Pahoa on Sundays, Hilo's farmers market on Saturday & Wednesday. Take in Volcano Village and the National Park, and don't miss the great snorkeling at the Kapoho tidepools . Hawaii Volcanoes NP is still the states #1 attraction . Stop by the visitor center, walk the trails, trek through Thurston Lava Tube (although the ones at our cottage are more of an adventure). A trip to the park at night is a must see as you can peer into the Halema'uma'u crater from the Jagger Museum along the Crater Rim Drive. Don't worry you get a map when entering the park. The fee is $10/vehicle and they are open 24 hours a day. Seniors bring your National Parks Pass to get into the park free. The Richardson's Beach Park in Hilo is a great beach to snorkel (our personal favorite). The tide pools at Kapoho are great too. Don't miss the waterfalls. Akaka Falls State Park has a self- guided 0.4 mile loop trail that takes you past Kahuna Falls and the 442 ft Akaka Falls. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on Scenic Drive is a special place too.Trails, waterfalls and ocean vistas are a few of the things to see. Rainbow Falls and the Boiling pots in Hilo are on my list (no swimming here as there are dangerous under currents). Hilo also has one of my favorite parks. The Lili'uokalani Gardens on Banyan Drive with views of Hilo Bay and Coconut Island. Also worth seeing is the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens. It is the only tropical rainforest zoo in the United States with over 80 animals. Both these parks are free. Getting AroundMust have a car. Other Things to NoteThe outdoor kitchen area all under cover has a kitchen counter with running hot water and basin to do clean-up. Interaction with GuestsI am happy to share some of the local fun events and wonderful things to see here on the East side of Hawaii The NeighborhoodI live in the middle of an Ohia rainforest and even though it is residential the lots around me are undeveloped so it feels larger. It is a quiet neighborhood on a well paved street and close to the main highway Getting AroundThere is safe street parking and if you don't have a car there is a bus but it is a good 2 miles to the bus stop. Other Things to NotePlease be aware that all of the East side of Hawaii has small frogs called coqui and they can be pretty loud at night. They might take some getting used to but I have earplugs if you find them bothersome. I will say that most people who stay here have not been bothered by them. W(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
